1. What a series! I have the Arabic and Chinese versions of the this book. What a great way to develop literacy skills in English and a student's native language! Biliteracy helps develop literacy skills better and faster than just teaching English alone. These books are a great help and hope for ESOL Teachers and the students they serve.

1. This is a nice book to read to a young child who cannot read yet. It features some simple poetry that is short but sweet. The poetry is complimented by some very nice illustrations which are the highlight of this book. The colorful creations will delight a young persons mind. Sixteen celebrations are featured beginning with New Years Eve and concluding with a Birthday. Martin Luther King Day features a nice tribute in poetry and Halloween is bound to make any youngster giggle with a peering witch and black cat gazing from the book. The book is about the size of a coloring book and a child can handle it with ease. The colorful drawings will entertain while the imaginative parent or teacher prepares for their next activity. A good first lesson in celebrations that most preschoolers are somewhat familiar with. Since it is poetry the teacher or parent will have to fill in the information for the inquisitive minds questions concerning the celebrations. Nice for a childs first collection of books.

1. Jed is half Tsimshian and half white, his best friend Tadashi is Japanese, but what they both are to themselves is Canadian. But the practices and laws of their country don't agree just before the beginning of Wold War II in remote Prince Rupert Sound on the British Columbia coast. Meanwhile they're working at an army base and nursing a wounded bald eagle back to health. It's an understated, perfect little book, particularly for boys who are interested in action-- and who would appreciate the issues of identity of boys go through.



2. Well-intentioned with some engaging characters, but the level of research in an historical novel exploring different cultures is very poor. The most significant errors are in the author's understanding of First Nations cultures. He seems confused between Haida and Tsimshian (they are very distinct) and puts forward some absurd notions. eg. "Both the Tsimshian and Haida believe in many things. [well, who doesn't] When a Tsimshian dies, if he's led a good life, he comes back to earth as an eagle or a raven or another one of the creatures of the forest or ocean." This is simply preposterous and an insult to Tsimshian people by its ignorance. One more laughable example: Quite a bit is made of the main character hunting rabbits. Well, if the author had done a modicum of research he would have found that rabbits do not exist on the north coast, and that the hunting scenes in the book would have been impossible.

1. This is a great interactive book filled with bright, colorful, cute illustrations and easy-to-read/easy-to-understand completion sentences. My kids enjoyed completing the book with photos and drawings of their own. This scrapbook is a fantastic keepsake!
