5 comments about Father Fox's Pennyrhymes.
  1. I am so pleased to see that Amazon is offering this book. I grew up reading it and the rhymes are still so vivid. The illustrations by Wendy Watson are splendid and offer a wonderful glimpse into family life and life in small communities--quaint and old fashioned. It's a Garrison Keillor or Dylan Thomas type of world. The sweet and humorous pictures often contain little snippets of conversation (between the foxes) that illuminate the rhymes and make it that much more interesting a read, and there's always something happening in the background that makes it fun to pore over. I would highly recommend this for children 3-7. It's a warm book and perfect for a Fall day when the leaves are turning or Winter evening with a cup of cocoa.

  2. One of my favorite books as a kid; really made me want to visit New England. One of these days I have to buy myself a copy, but I really wish it was in print for new kids to enjoy.

  3. I loved being read and reading this as a child, the funny poems and pictures are a delight. I still have the copy I had as a child and now enjoy reading it with my two daugthers, my older daughter loves the humor too. It is wonderful it is available in print again for families to love.

  4. My kids', and now my grandkids' favorite favorite favorite book.
I wish I could buy fresh new editions for all the children in my life...

  5. I have to get mine rebound. My sister and I have the one we used to read as kids and her kids and now mine beg for it everynight. Needless-to-say, it's in tatters!

3 comments about Night Before Christmas In Seattle, The.
  1. A cute book (literally as it is about 3 1/2 inches by 5 inches), great for a stocking stuffer! The author throws various Seattle bits into the tale--the Needle, Pacific Science Center, Boeing and even the Sonics, Seahawks and Mariners. Know someone moving to Seattle? Here's your gift for them! Are you from Seattle? Give this to your friends and relatives! This would also be a nice souvenier.

  2. Recently, while looking through my childhood pictures, I found a picture of our family trip to the Space Needle in December of 1974. There I am sitting next to the big windows with a huge red ribbon in my hair and a red, white and blue dessert topped with chocolate, which looks most delicious and magical.

It was a day I never forgot because the restaurant rotates and I'd never seen anything like that in my life. Since then we have made many trips back to the Space Needle and I took my nieces up to the restaurant for a special treat when we visited a few years ago.

I had to laugh while reading this tiny book because it seems I remember something about a Santa ornament or Christmas ornament being stuck out side the window and we kept seeing it as we spun slowly around in the restaurant. In this story, Santa gets stuck on the top of the Space Needle.

    "The last thing he remembered,
    he'd flown by a Seagull
    And now here he was,
    Stuck atop the Space Needle!"

There are references to shopping in Pioneer Square, working at Boeing, watching the Christmas Parade of the Ships and visits to Pike Place Market. The restaurant at the top of the Space Needle spins out of control and a cry for help is sent out from Lake Washington to the Puget Sound. Can Boeing help or will it take the Seahawks and the Mariners to get Santa down off the Space Needle?

An enjoyable treat that will be loved by anyone who loves Seattle, Washington.

    ~The Rebecca Review

1 comments about Red Eggs and Dragon Boats: Celebrating Chinese Festivals.
  1. This is a good book for younger readers as an introduction to Chinese festivals. As a parent of a child adopted from China, I feel it is important to give her as much knowledge about her birth country as possible, and this volume is colorful and easy to read.

4 comments about Czech Republic (Festivals of the World).
  1. I loved this book but it needs much more czech to english phrasing to help you get by while in Czech.

  2. As Czech living in Canada I really enjoyed this book. I was amused and often surprised how exactly our manners and traditions were described. I would recommend this book to anybody who are visiting Czech republic and wants to understand czech people.

  3. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I had a good laugh, I learned something
about myself (after twenty five years out of Prague, in Africa) and I
also realised how difficult it is for a non-European to appreciate
complexities of a small nation which lived for more than forty years
under communism. The book is amusing, open-mined, tolerant and
kind. It generally assesses well the character of the Czech
nation. Where it hits shallow ground are the issues related to life
under communism: incorect or insignificant problems like limited
shopping opprotunities, non-availaibility of goods, banning of western
music overshadow the real issues of the evil of communism: its grip on
people's life, its control of persons' destiny. And what really jabbed
me was a very ethnic view of the author on what is a polished
culture. Athough numerous habits and customs encoutered in the Czech
culture are rather ethnic, American mannerism is equally culturally
challenged....The notion of crasness is indeed
different in different cultures. Overall, a great book to buy so that
you can return to it and enjoy its wits and successful attempt to search for ethnic diversity.

  4. I bought this book for my 18-year-old daughter who is going to the Czech Republic to teach English. She said it was simple and clear to read and entertaining. It is very informative regarding habits and beliefs of the local residents, very down to earth.
