  1. I am so pleased to see that Amazon is offering this book. I grew up reading it and the rhymes are still so vivid. The illustrations by Wendy Watson are splendid and offer a wonderful glimpse into family life and life in small communities--quaint and old fashioned. It's a Garrison Keillor or Dylan Thomas type of world. The sweet and humorous pictures often contain little snippets of conversation (between the foxes) that illuminate the rhymes and make it that much more interesting a read, and there's always something happening in the background that makes it fun to pore over. I would highly recommend this for children 3-7. It's a warm book and perfect for a Fall day when the leaves are turning or Winter evening with a cup of cocoa.

  2. One of my favorite books as a kid; really made me want to visit New England. One of these days I have to buy myself a copy, but I really wish it was in print for new kids to enjoy.

  3. I loved being read and reading this as a child, the funny poems and pictures are a delight. I still have the copy I had as a child and now enjoy reading it with my two daugthers, my older daughter loves the humor too. It is wonderful it is available in print again for families to love.

  4. My kids', and now my grandkids' favorite favorite favorite book.
I wish I could buy fresh new editions for all the children in my life...

  5. I have to get mine rebound. My sister and I have the one we used to read as kids and her kids and now mine beg for it everynight. Needless-to-say, it's in tatters!

  1. Ages 3-6 will not want to miss Rebecca Emberly's Pinata!, a highly recommended bilingual Spanish/English survey of the items which traditionally stuff piñatas, and how piñatas are enjoyed at a party. Very simple drawings accompany a fine survey of the pinata in all its glory and appeal.

  1. I have read this book many times to all of my Grandchildren. They love it! The photography is wonderful as well as the story. I think it is something that children relate to well and the "fun" of a family outing in the fall has an enchantment for all young readers as well as smaller children that do not read yet. Fall presents such a warm glow of color and the onset of holidays..........it is a magical time of year filled with fun, tantilizing aromas from recently harvested fruits and excitement in anticipation of carving pumpkins for Halloween. This book definately gets a five star rating from me!

  2. This book is a great book to use with a unit on fall. You can teach the 1st part of the book in the 1st two weeks of a 4 week unit and then teach the 2nd part of the book for the last two weeks of the unit. I have used this book to teach about apples and pumpkins to a two year old class and I will using it again to teach a 4 year old class. Be creative. The children can learn the names of the characters. You can have a picnic lunch in your classroom, just like the characters in the book, do.

You can make applesauce, learn the difference between colors of apples. Have an "apple toss" game or go on a apple hunt, make jack o lanterns. It's a great book to use for fall that doesn't use pumpkins strictly for halloween.

  3. This is a very simple book about a caucasion family consisting of a daughter and mother and father who goes on an outing to pick apples and pumpkins in the fall. After the family picks out their pumpkin and apples they go home to make a jack-o-lantern. In the end the girl goes trick or treating with other children. Trick or treaters are dressed as a witch, devil, pirate, ghost, queen, and a monster.

The illustrations are softly done in muted colors of autumn tones. The text is very simple and short, perhaps this would be suitable for beginning readers as well...

  4. I'm confused by the July 17th 2002 review (Christinemm). There are no Trick or Treaters in our book, just pictures of a family and young friends on an outing to the orchard where they pick apples and pumpkins and have a picnic. After arriving home, the children bake a pie with Grandma's help and make jack-o-lanterns with dad. [There is another book with a similar title, perhaps Amazon has accidentally confused the two.]

In any case... the pictures are very nice and as another reviewer noted, much better than any drawings could be.

That said, if you are purchasing this book as any sort of `Reader', you should know that the text is not suitable for any but experienced readers (imho). Despite the "Read with Me" label on the cover, the average page in this book has 50 or more words on it. In addition, the text contains words like: old-fashioned, Battleview, pretended, collapsed, and caramel. Hardly suitable for younger students. A paragraph (as it appears in the book) follows so you can determine the level for yourself.

    This time, Scott's hay
    wagon brought everyone
    to the farm store. While
    Kristy's mother paid for
    the apples and pumpkins,
    Kristy and her friends
    looked around. They were
    amazed by all the delicious
    things that could be made
    from apples. There were
    caramel apples, candy
    apples, apple jam, apple
    cake, and apple butter.
    There were pumpkin pies
    and breads, too. But Kristy
    knew that when they got
    home, Grandma would
make the best treat of all-
    apple pie!

Three Stars. The pictures are nice and more interesting than drawings. They elicit the warm glow of autumn days and bring a sense of fun as the children romp and climb trees. It is nice that not everyone is white, and that people of all ages are shown. Despite the "Read With Me" label, you won't find a `Reader' here for young children. The only real down note that I have, is that despite the enthusiasm expressed by others, my children (boy and girl; almost 4 and 6) were not particularly interested in this book.

  5. It may have been written, but I did not realize this book would not include both English and Spanish text (as the title does). The text of the book is in Spanish only. The photos are very nice.

  1. If you have younger or older children, this is the book for you! If you have no ideas where to start or need great ideas. This book is wonderful! I needed some different and neat ideas and I found them in this book. I just can't say enough about this book.

  2. The Kid's Pick-a-Party Book has loads of ideas for children's parties. The party age ranges are from toddler to teenager, and are identified in the table of contents for easy reference. We have used a number of ideas for different theme parties. The book focuses on a wide variety of party ideas, but doesn't address the typical party themes, like Valentine's Day, holidays, etc. It does have a ghosts and goblins party and we used some of those ideas for a Halloween party. It is well organized and has ideas for invitations, costumes, decorations, games, food, favors and more.

  3. This book contains good ideas for all ages. You can use ideas from one type of party and just change the theme. Also good ideas for school parties, etc.

  1. this book rules !I am known as the "origami freak" at my school I'm really good at origami. By:Paul Bechthold

  2. This fun little book has seventeen origami projects that can be used for holidays and other fun occasions. It begins with several basic folds and forms, and then immediately launches into the projects. The project include: 1) Nifty New Year's Confetti Container, 2) Hatful of Fun (this hat's nice for birthdays and other celebrations), 3) Fluttering Butterfly, 4) Secret Pocket Valentine, 5) Lucky Four-Leaf Clover, 6) Bring on the Bunny, 7) Egg-o-Rama, 8) Patriotic Pinwheel (nice for any summer day), 9) Smilin' Jack (a very nice little jack o' lantern), 10) Going Batty, 11) Home Haunted Home (with a little imagination, you can use this house pattern for a number of uses), 12) Thanksgiving Turkey Basket, 13) Rock-A-Bye Papoose (you need to see this one, it's very cute!), 14) Classic Holiday Candle (Christmas, Hanukkah, birthday, any day!), 15) 3-D Christmas Tree, 16) Little Hanukkah Driedel (this top actually works!), and 17) Angelic Origami.

If the above description doesn't tell you just how wonderful this book is, I don't know what will. It's a great book, complete with lots of colorful pictures and illustrations, step-by-step instructions, and holiday hints. This is a book that I highly recommend to anybody who likes to make fun-filled decorations for around the house. I love it!

1 comments about Pakistan the Culture (Lands, Peoples, and Cultures).
  1. This is only a picture book; I gave it one star because the pictures are very good. The content does not live up to the photography. The book only reflects the glories of the past. There no pictures of the capital of Pakistan, no pictures of tribal groups, no pictures of the picturesque painted buses, no pictures of protesting crowds, no picture of contemporary textiles, buildings, life styles. It reveals nothing about tribal structure, religious sects, political and governmental organizatiions. The book is much-glorified history, not culture. It shows off the cruel art of ancient regimes, not the culture of the people today. I have rarely been so disappointed in a book.
