  1. This is a classic 1960's Christmas album. Combine Diana Ross, Motown, and great songs, and this CD will fill your home with the warmth and love that Christmas symbolizes. Diana Ross shines bright on these holiday gems. This CD has transported me back to the heyday of pop music. It has been beautifully remastered. Buy it and you will play it from Thanksgiving to New Years Eve year after year.

  2. how nice it would have been for Universal to add the one missing track from the original sessions, "O Litttle Town of Bethlehem" and to dig up a lost track, "Jingle Bell Rock." Also added could have been "Won't Be Long Till Christmas" and the other Diana Ross solo Supremes Christmas recordings released on other Motown collections. This is just a reissue of an album already available, when it could have been made an even better package. For Motown fans: "Little Bright Star" is the same song as Tammi Terrell's "I Can't Go On Without You," just different lyrics.

  3. This disc is just okay. The sound is fine but it's missing the detailed booklet that was included in the 1999 issue. Of course the highlight of the disc is Florence Ballard's poignant "Silent Night which by far exceeds the sometimes childlike delivery of the other songs on this disc. Hopefully one day in the near future we will get the Complete Christmas sessions featuring the far superior mono versions of all these songs, plus "O'Holy Night also led by Florence and O'Little Town of Bethlehem.

  4. First, this collection is phenomenal! What a great collection of fabulous Supremes Christmas music. The remastering is first rate. The booklet, photos, essay by historian Andrew Skurow and annotations are wonderful.

This collection is exactly the same as the 1999 reissue, same bonus tracks, same booklet, etc. The ONLY difference is the cover, which I understand is because Universal Music wanted to make all their Christmas releases uniform, and thus the banner across the top and enlarged photo on the front.

Others have complained that there are other Supremes songs that should be here. I agree, but it's just a few songs found in the vaults, but that are available on other collections. I've also read taht some fans would rather have the mono version of the original album, but I disagree. This CD is in full glorious stereo. The mono LP had no backgrounds, and most of the mixes were inferior. Motown did a perfect job on this one! Treat yourself to a great Christmas CD!!!

  5. I picked up this Christmas CD this year because I have always liked the Supremes and thought it would be a nice addition to the Christmas repertoire. And it mostly is, even though the CD overall is hit-or-miss.

My biggest reservation is the sound quality with this "remastered" version. While the instrumental tracks sound fine the vocal tracks are hissy and do not showcase Diana Ross's, uh, "penetrating" voice to very good effect. I know part of this is her nasal vocal quality but other CDs don't have nearly the same snowy background noise (I guess maybe because this is a Christmas CD it's snowy?), which is especially noticeable on the slower numbers. Consequently Diana's tendency to sound shrill in modern sound systems rather than AM radio commercial is really apparent.

That aside, some of the tracks are really fun. Although the often heard tunes like "Silver Bells" and "My Favorite Things" still sound polished and professional, the lesser-known tunes are my favorites. "Born of Mary" is a great traditional tune, "My Christmas Tree" is charming, ditto "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Me," and they do a rocking "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." My favorite is "Little Bright Star" where you can hear Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard grooving away as well. (Now that I know about the Tammi Terrell tune from "A music fan's" review I will have to find it.) Florence Ballard's "Silent Night" sounds fine (although a couple of the notes were a little sketchy) but it also sounds like it was sung into a big void because of the reverb and spare arrangement. Perhaps because of the back-story involving Ballard the overall effect was a little empty and depressing rather than inspiring.

However, the biggest drawbacks are numbers that showcase Diana Ross. Although a "bonus" track not included on the album version, "Noel" adds nothing to the disc - it only demonstrates Diana's limited vocal range and has this creepy portion where she talks over what sounds like herself singing ('cause Mary and Florence were busy?) And although a group effort, "Joy to the World" is overwrought and frenetically paced. But the strangest number is the "Children's Christmas Song" where Diana talks to a bunch of Berry Gordy's kids and her brother(?) while marshalling them into singing woefully out of tune with her. Diana's weird vocal inflections, annoying over-annunciations (which also especially mar the "Christmas Song") and bizarre, "mid-Atlantic" accent give the impression that she is a spinsterish, play-by-the rules governess rather than a young, sassy woman barely out of her teens. She doesn't seem like much fun on this number.

  1. I ordered this Christmas music set 2 years ago after I couldn't decide which of the O'Neill Brothers four holiday CDs to buy. It was a gift for myself, something relaxing to listen to while I wrapped gifts. I took it along on Chritmas Day to our Grandparents house and it immediately turned into a family tradition. We listen to these CDs throughout the day on Christmas every year. This is a beautiful collection of all the holiday favorites.

  1. I have always enjoyed the Windham Hill label. I was at a bass seminar and Micheal Manring was one of the instructors. He mentioned doing Christmas Carols for Windham Hill that sent me searching for the releases. I was very happy when I got to hear this collection of wonderfully crafted Christmas favorites. If you have an ear for GOOD music, don't hesitate to add this gem to your collection !

  2. I never write reviews or anything remotely close, but I have to throw in my two cents here...and rather than gush, I'll just say that I have now purchased this CD 4 times since it came out - and they've all been for me (I tend to lose all my good CD's). There isn't another album out there that would make me consider doing the same. The holidays, simply put, are not complete without "The Carols of Christmas."

  3. I DON'T CARE FOR ALOT OF PIANO AND GUTIAR SOLOS. IT SEEMS ALL THE WINDHAM HILL CD I HAVE JUST PURCHASED ARE LIKE THAT AND I JUST BOUGHT ABOUT FOUR OF THEM, I AM QUITE DISAPPOINTED. I WILL PROBABLY JUST PUT THEM AWAY IN CASE SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT LIKE TO LISTEN TO THEM.

  4. The Windham Hill label has been around since the early 80s, providing some of the best of what was once called "New Age" music. If you purchase a WH disc, or an artist on the WH label, you generally know what you're getting. If you purchase a disc without knowing anything whatsoever about the label or the performers, than that's on you.

I've noticed a disturbing trend in the past two years where some people are posting significantly negative reviews of a book or CD, which are exceedingly contrary to all other reviews. Ten reviewers may give a product 5 out of 5 stars, and then there will be a reviewer who gives it 1, along with some inane comments that really don't tell you about the product. I'm starting to think these reviewers are just trying to sabotage products that are otherwise well received.

There is nothing patently offensive about this CD. In fact, it contains some very interesting instrumental arrangements of songs we've all heard thousands of times. Some are classic WH "New Age" interpretations, while others have a "Lite Jazz" feel. This CD will work well in many settings, such as dinner party or holiday gathering music, or as a de-stressing agent in your car while shopping and facing holiday traffic.

It really deserves nothing less than 3 stars. Christmas music is not offensive, the performers haven't done anything with the presentation or arrangements that render the songs unlistenable, and the sound quality is up to the usual WH high standards.

  5. These are traditional carols in the Windham Hill manner. They are not intrusive, but tasteful and beautiful in themselves.

This is the music I play while we decorate our Christmas tree. Another favorite at that time is "Winter Solstice on Ice" (2discs).

  1. Add comedy christmas to traditional songs during the season.

This on has some real funny ones!

  2. I have all the Bob River's Xmas CD's and they are great. I think what impresses me the most is that he duplicates the original musical arrangements of the songs he spoofs. I have a huge collection of Christmas CD's and I have original recordings of every song he sings and Mr. River's is right on with his spoofs.

  3. Bob Rivers is a parodist par excellence. I doubt there's any style he hasn't attempted and he's done both holiday and regular songs. His CDs are so well done if you mix them in with the regular music, only people who're listening will know the difference.

This particular CD is for the trailer park and pink flamingo crowd. One caveat, there really is nothing sacred on this CD.

It's hard to pick a favorite--what I have found with the other Bob Rivers' CD is that I tend to like different songs through the season depending on my mood. Here are a few standouts:

"Me and Mrs. Claus" is a hilarious take on a man playing 'Backdoor Santa' to Mrs. Claus while Santa's slippin' presents in people's stockings.

"Merry Christmas, Allah" is an irreverent take on the Carpenter's schmalty standard--and if like me, you think the original has been overplayed since the first year, you're going to really enjoy this one.

"Aquaclaus" takes Aqualung to the Department Store at Christmastime.

  4. If you want to relieve the boredom of listening to the same old christmass stuff this is it.

  5. All of Bob Rivers Christmas albums are a must for any family gathering. The look on peoples faces when they realize the words are changed is priceless. Of course some songs are better than others but it sure makes gift wrapping so much easier to do.

  1. Any initial disappointment I felt when I discovered that this album was filled was standards didn't last long. The songs have all been covered many times before - some more than others, though Dolly was careful not to repeat any of the songs that appeared on her first Christmas offering, Once upon a Christmas, which she recorded with Kenny Rogers.

Dolly's exuberant personality makes itself evident on such joyous songs as Jingle bells, which never sounded so much fun. I really want to jingle thos bells when I hear Dolly sing that song. With a country church congregation on First Noel and Joy to the world, and a children's chorus on Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer and Santa Claus is coming to town, Dolly brings many elements to this Christmas album. We three kings is another stand-out track here and (along with Jingle bells) is my favorite.

Dolly clearly loves Christmas and enjoyed making this very upbeat album. With so many familiar songs full of Christmas cheer, this is a great party album.

  2. Congratulations on coming across one of the best Christmas albums ever made. Dolly's voice appeals to all and her choice of songs is great. This is one of the 1st Christmas CD's I purchased, and it is the one I listen to most. And when I play it for others, they comment on how much they like it and many of them go purchase it.

  3. This Christmas album by Dolly Parton was originally released in 1990. There are no original songs on it, it only features well known Christmas songs. But Dolly sings them well, of course. If you're a Dolly fan, you certainly will enjoy it. But with only ten songs, it's kind of on the short side.

  4. I'm not a big Dolly fan, but I love Christmas music, so I rented this from my local library with low expectations. But when I listend to it, I was so surprised. I orderd it next day, and it's been a cherished addition to my Christmas collection since. She has such a wonderful Christmas singing voice, and thats what makes it so special. One of my favorite Christmas albums.

  5. This is a great Christmas CD. A perfect addition to any christmas collection. The songs are a tradional mix with an up beat festive sound. Dolly rings in Holiday Cheer

  1. Awsome holiday record. Super relaxing and interesting arrangments. This recording makes me feel like I'm on vacation. It gives a feeling of romanticism that captures the true spirit of what Christmas should be about.

  2. if you're like me you love the Vince Guaraldi Peanuts xmas and you're looking for more music like that for the holidays . . . this is it right here - makes a perfect gift as you get to look cool by turning peeps on to a new thing they likely never heard of. HIGHLY reccomended and very tasty..... jazz purists will love it as will your Uncle Fred who knows nothing about jazz. . . .

  3. This has become my favorite holiday CD ever, winning its place next to Nat King Cole's on my shelf. If you're tired of all the hokey, overproduced holiday music you have to suffer through during December, put on Trio West and let it permeate the room: a mixture of nostalgia, sophistication, joy and warmth. Thank you, Trio West, for recapturing the holiday spirit!

  4. What I love about this CD the most is that it's not the same old holiday songs that are played ad naseum in stores, on the radio, or on television. Instead, you'll find new jazz-inspired takes on classic tunes that are not only delightful but which also foster a warm and inviting atmosphere. A standout in the category and one you'll likely listen to all year round.

  1. At long last, I FINALLY have one of the BEST R&B Christmas CD"s ever made. I have been searching high and low for this one and even saw it on ebay for a very high price. An excellent purchase for BIIM lovers, Christmas song affectionado's and just general music lovers! I've been trying to purchase this CD for 3 years and most stores I've look in don't carry it anymore :-(

  2. if your looking for the very best of christmas album
without all the "cliche'" harmonies? this is the album for you!
and belive me you will play it year after year! some artist like to
( OVER DO IT ) like christina agiulara and others but you know exactly
what im talking about boys II MEN do it so diffrently and think outside
the box and come with their own unique style and harmonies to blend mix
of oh how do i say it "ahhhhhh" just a refreshing twist on christmas
tunes insted of the "same ol',same ol' which is why we all hated they broke up in the first place.but the memories are a lifetime!
THANK YOU SO MUCH BOYS II MEN we will definatley miss you!

  3. If you are an R&B fan, you don't need me to tell you that this Christmas Album is only second to the Temptation Christmas Album as the best R&B Christmas album of all time. Now it does have all original songs besides Silent Night and Let it Snow... but I personally like that. Do They Know, Let it Snow, This Christmas ... are so good! Basically put the CD in and let it play .. you won't skip a song...and definitely gets you in the Christmas mood.

  4. As a traditional Christmas album, it's a disappointment. No "Jingle Bells" or "Holly Jolly Christmas" here. As a romantic Christmas album, listeners will be Merry all season long. A Season for Seduction is what I call it. I love this album!

  5. This album came out in 1993 and still sounds fresh and original as ever. My favorite song on here is "Let It Snow" but I enjoy listening to all the songs around Xmas time and even in between the year it's so great! Much love to Boyz II Men and everyone this holiday season, this would make a great stocking stuffer for any music lover.

  1. I bought this CD -Harry Connick Jr. - Harry for the Holidays and I love it. The music is to die for and makes you feel warm, loved and special for the upcoming Holiday Season. A remake of "This Christmas" originally sung by the late Donnie Hathaway made tears well-up in my eyes. It's jazzy, soft and unique as Harry takes this song to a new level. The first song "Frosty the Snowman" is a big-band song, with a big-bang sound. It's a fun rendition of all Frosty songs. Harry has the charisma and knows just how to do it when he sings, "I'll Be Home For Christmas." Get this for the Holidays and buy it for the special people in your life they will thank you for seasons and seasons to come.

  2. I'm a Connick fan, and think his Christmas CD's are great. But this was disappointing. Very short for the money, but I guess it was a TV show.

  3. This DVD may be shorter than any true Harry fan would like, but is still Harry and the Band at their best, as always. Anyone who loves Harry's music will love this DVD. If you have seen Harry in concert, you will miss his great banter with the crowd, as they've cut it out. This is absolutely worth the money, and a must-have for fans of Harry and the Holidays!

  4. As a Harry Connick, Jr. fan, I already had good expectations for the DVD before buying it. Having purchased the "Harry for the Holidays" CD quite some time ago, I had put in that corner of my mind where I keep the memory for good records. I really love the choice of standards and the renditions, not to mention the original compositions from Harry's musical vault. However, I have also experienced some let-downs along the way, given the unconventional musical path Harry has trodden in the last ten years or so (Star Turtle would be, in my opinion, a remarkable flop).
With that scenario in mind, I harbored some misgivings about the consistency of the performances, because sometimes Christmas specials are anything but special. Yet, as I went through the songs, my doubts vanished and I just got carried away by quality of the arrangements, specially those of Auld Lang Syne, in which both Harry and Marc Anthony prove how a very traditional, melancholic song can be transformed into an upbeat work of art. Way to go, guys.
    I definitely recommned this DVD.

  5. I love Harry, I love this DVD, was disappointed the Xmas CD wasn't the actual songs on the Christmas DVD with guests and all, but it is awesome anyway. His version of Blue Christmas is better on the DVD than on the CD. That Trio needs to release "Silent Night" from the DVD and record more together! The harmony is so fabulous it makes you cry!
Of Course, I would like Row, Row, Row Your Boat if Harry sang it!

  1. I heard this CD on NPR. I prefer the more obscure Christmas songs because I kinda get tired of traditional songs by the end of Christmas.
These are traditional songs made fresh by the instruments and arrangements. Love the mandolin and in this CD it does not sound...plinky (?) This CD sounds folksy or Appalachian-thats ok with me too. If you like really unusual songs- folk singing. Try Winter's Grace.Winter's Grace I think it goes well with this CD.
