- This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas CDs -- extremely mellow, perfect for background music or for active listening. While I'm sure there are more talented harpists out there, Christi and Holli Banks are quite lovely and, to my ear, sound very talented. If you love the sound of harps, and are proud of your Christmas Music collection, this CD would make an excellent addition.

5 comments about Christmas with Maureen McGovern.
- It is hard to say enough good things about this CD. About the only drawback is it's scarcity. In a day and age where Holiday music has become so ordinary and so repetitive, people often search for something new and unusual in the holiday music realm. This CD is one to own. Through a variety of Holiday selections, Maureen McGovern sets the mood for a holiday selection certain to please everyone. What makes this CD unique among Christmas albums, however, is not just her angelic voice or impressive range, but her selections which range from traditional to contemporary. For this, the CD will appeal to anyone who likes their Christmas music well done. Each track is pleasing, but my personal favorite is "Our First Christmas" a cheerful, upbeat holiday love song which could only be performed by her. This contemporary song captures the spirit of the holidays, as does her rendition of cassics such as "I Wonder as I Wonder" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".These timeless classics are taken to new heights through the beauty of her singing. Her Broadway-twist on "Santa Clause is Coming to Town", on the other hand, takes another traditional favorite and makes us feel as though we have been placed in Times Square in December. The casual, upbeat mood we hear on songs such as "Winter Wonderland" contrasts perfectly with the beauty of "White Christmas". And as for the song titled "Do you know it's Christmas?", well, just playing this music lets you know that it is. So few artists of our time could successfully offer us a Christmas CD that blends traditional with contemporary as Maureen McGovern has. This is a CD that lives up to and exceeds the expectations of McGoverns fans, and probably, will gather her many more. Her voice is nothing short of angelic, her range is impressive, and the selections here are perfect. It would be hard to top this CD. Well Done, Ms McGovern!!
- This is one of the few cases of a Christmas album by one artist that I can listen to over and over. The arrangements are excellent, and the singing is lovely and thoughtful throughout. "I Wonder as I Wander" "Coventry Carol" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" stand out.
Two other songs highlight the disc for me. One is a whimsical, rather silly version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," that I didn't like upon first hearing it. I've changed my mind - it's amusing and Jay Leonhart provides excellent counterpoint to Maureen. The other highlight - worth the price of the album by itself - is a positively gorgeous song called "The Christmas Tree" that I've never heard before, and will probably never hear sung so well again. By all means, make this CD a part of your Christmas music collection!
- I see that this CD is out of stock on Amazon, and that is a shame. This ties with Nancy LaMott's yuletide CD as my most favorite - and I probably have evry Christmas CD ever recorded! Maureen McGovern's singing here is lovely; she has never sounded better or more relaxed. The songs range from familiar ("Have Yourself a Merry...") to unusual ("A Child is Born"). Two unfamiliar songs, "The Christmas Tree" and a lovely ballad, "Christmas Eve," with music set to a poem by Robert Frost, are my favorites - gorgeously and simply sung.
The familiar songs get original treatments, too. Maureen duets amusingly with Jay Leonhart (as Santa) on "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town," and Maureen shows off her scatting (and high soprano) on a medley of favorites. "Lullay Thou Tiny Child" is combined with "I Wonder as I Wander" for a ravishing rendition. If you like Christmas music, beautifully sung, do what you can do find this gem of a CD. It's something everyone should find in their stocking on Christmas Day.
- Everyone seems to get around to recording a holiday album at some point in their career. We can all be thankful that Ms. McGovern got around to it because her entry into the field is excellent. I, too, have many Christmas CDs and this one is among the best. Maureen's vocals are warm and inviting; her song selection is superb. It's fun, it's lighthearted, it's serious. Find this one new or used and pick it up...you won't be disappointed!
- Maureen just has an incredible instrument period!...And her voice was just made for these Christmas songs. If you have this album and Kathleen Battle's Christmas album with the Harlem Boy's Choir...You're covered!...No need for any other Christmas albums as Maureen covers the jazzy/pop songs and Kathleen the classical...you will be sneaking a listen in the middle of July with this album...Terrific!

2 comments about Women of Christmas: In the Garden of Lilith.
- I saw this CD in the store today, and was outraged. Apparently, I'm a bit out of date. "Lilith Fair" was bad enough, but to associate Christmas music with a demon? There are no words for how truly offensive to Christians this is.
- I am ordering this CD particularly for the Karla Bonoff track. I've heard her version of First Noel and there is none that come close to the beauty that she brings to this standard. Her voice is heavenly. Whenever you hear Karla sing First Noel, it will calm you, relax you, and wash away anything negative and put you in a peaceful state. I'm sure the others are good too, however, Karla Bonoff's track is in my opinion worth the purchase.

- Its great for halloween or anytime! The songs are great for dance parties! I like the monster mash best. Its a classic. Have fun!
- Several of the songs on this CD are NOT the original releases. These are:
Monster Mash, Haunted House, The Purple People Eater, Spooky If you want the originals, this is not the CD for you.
- "Music for Your Halloween Party" does indeed include the original versions of the dozen songs K-Tel put together for this 1996 collection. The album starts with the official song of Halloween, "Monter Mash" as performed by Bobby "Boris" Pickett and then goes for anything that talks about monsters (Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London," Sheb Wooley's "Purple People Eater," and Ray Parker's "Ghostbusters) or has a Halloween theme, such as "Spooky." There is even "The Time War" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and the theme for "The Addams Family" (television show vocal version, not the theatrical film). But well before they got to ten tracks the producers just went for some classic party tracks, which explains the presence of Buster Poindexter's "Hot Hot Hot," "Tequila" by the Champs, and "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang. You can have fun trying to come up with reasons why any one of those particular songs is perfect for Halloween. I have yet to come across the perfect Halloween music collection, which would specifically require double figures of tracks that deal explicitly with the idea of horror either explicitly (e.g., "Don't Fear the Reaper") or through a pop culture connection (e.g., "Tubular Bells"), but there are probably all sorts of licensing reasons that we have not gotten to that apex yet. So, given what is out there at this time "Music for Your Halloween Party" is an above average effort and if you are looking for some Halloween tunes you could easily do a lot worse than these dozen tracks.
