5 comments about Hanukkah Rocks.
  1. Just how do you spell Hanukkah? And is it apple sauce or sour cream for your latkes? These are the question posed by The LeeVees in their holiday album: Hanukkah Rocks. Adam Gardner and Dave Schneider combine for this fun, contemporary, and entertaining album of new Hanukkah songs. Released in October 2005, Hanukkah Rocks seeks to fill a gap in Hanukkah music. Outside of the ubiquitous "Driedel Song", there aren't too many songs out there for Hanukkah. Gardner and Schneider, both established musicians with their respective bands (Guster and The Zambonis), successfully fill this void with sure to be classics like "Latke Clan": "We'll put the oil into the pan/So come and join our Latke Clan/'Cause we are latke fans" and the hilarious "How Do You Spell Channukkahh?": "I remember when I was/In Elementary School/A Spanish kid told me/that it starts with a silent J/But Julio was wrong". These songs capture the secular sense of Hanukkah that connects most Jews to the holiday, but they are also good enough to listen to year round. Other songs are about the love for kugel, the adventure of the Jewish Matzoh Ball, and the unofficial Jewish tradition of going for Chinese food on Christmas day. The album is often amusing and always fun; and furthermore, full of the joy of being Jewish.

  2. Tight, solid riffs. Subversive and hilarious lyrics on par (no, better!) than the best of Barenaked Ladies or They Might Be Giants. And, of course, terrific tongue-in-cheek Jewish humor, just in time for most bittersweet time of the year for the Diasporized.

Please, don't buy this album if you are content to sing "I Have a Little Dreidel" all December. It'll be wasted on you--buy it for your hip nephew instead.

  3. THis is the greatest CD! My family and I laugh to this and the songs are so easy to learn - we LOVE it!!!!

  4. I am constantly amazed how enjoyable this entire CD is from beginning to end. I was first introduced to The Leevees in December '05 at a Barenaked Ladies concert. The Leevees opened the show and they were awesome and funny! I am not Jewish but I was smitten with the music from the moment I heard it. I definately recommend this CD, especially for road trips! I wish a few of the songs they performed Live were included on this CD but maybe there will be another one down the road!

  5. What a gem! The songs are funny and catchy, and they do a great job reflecting modern Jewish life in America. It's only November, and already I find myself singing "Goyim Friends" (my favorite track) and "Latke Klan." Both the kids and adults in my family love it, and we play it over and over. It's my favorite Hanukkah gift (except for families with young children -- I give them the fabulous Golden Dreydl: Klezmer Nutcracker for Chanukah). There are plenty of good klezmer Hanukkah albums, and some that are jazzy or swing, but this is the only one that truly rocks.

4 comments about A Christmas to Remember.
  1. Great Christmas music evokes the spirit of the holiday through both sound and lyric. Grant's first two Christmas albums accomplished this in spades. I loved them, and play them every season. That said, I purchased this one without so much as a listen, confident that it would be chock full of more gems. First came the title track, which lists the playing of some other artist's music as being integral to having a memorable Christmas. Then came the jazzy Jingle Bell Rock, which sounded less like a Christmas tune and more like something they rushed through in order to flesh out the album. Then came the cutesy Mr. Santa, which was a nifty idea but once again had none of the magical stuff that made her earlier albums such perennial favorites. Then came the cash I got by trading the CD in at a second-hand shop.

There may very well have been some genuinely sweet moments hidden in there, but the intro left a sour taste, as did the knowledge that I would no longer be reading Gary Chapman's name among Ms. Grant's album credits. Seems he didn't love Vince Gill as much as she did.

Amy's a gifted musician, with plenty of worthwhile music. Check out Unguarded, The Collection, Lead Me On, or Behind the Eyes if you want to see what she's really capable of. Check out A Christmas Album or Home for Christmas. Avoid this one.

  2. I must strongly disagree with the first reviewer about this CD! I do agree that the CD would have been better without "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Mister Santa." They are cute, but they don't seem to fit in very well with the other songs. That said, this CD is full of gems like the hauntingly beautiful "Christmas Lullaby" and "Welcome to Our World." There are two beautiful instrumentals, "Highland Cathedral" and "Gabriel's Oboe." "Til' The Season Comes Round Again" is tenderly sung, and "Christmas Can't Be Very Far Away" sets the right note at the beginning of the CD. I don't have a problem with the fact that these songs weren't written by Amy herself (Michael W. Smith, Chris Rice and others wrote many of them). Also, I don't think the fact that Amy is divorced should affect one's decision to buy this CD! While sad, her divorce in no way diminishes her talent and beautiful voice. I love this Christmas CD as much as the first two. Please do yourself a favor and give it a chance -- I don't think you'll be disappointed.

  3. While I am not a big Amy Grant fan, I heard Welcome to Our World on the radio,
and just fell in love with it. The clarity of her voice never ceases to amaze me,
and this one song is worth the price of the CD. There are many other tracks that make this
one of my favortite Christmas CD's. I agree that Mr. Santa and Jingle Bell Rock breaks
the continuity of this soft and amazing album, it is worth adding to your
    Christmas music collection.

  4. To me, Christmas isn't Christmas without an Amy Grant CD being played. I wait impatiently for the holiday season to roll around so I can dig her holidays CDs out and play them incessantly. My favorite of hers is the now classic "Home For Christmas" which should be in every Christmas lover's CD collection. I place this offering, her third, right behind that one and before her first one, "The Christmas Album."(Which hasn't aged well). Heresy, you say? Not really. Granted, she doesn't really offer much here as a songwriter, but she still has an amazing gift for making a song her own. Her voice and delivery bring out so much emotion and is well suited to this, for the most part, well-chosen collection. There really isn't a bad track here, though as a few people have noted, the addition of "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Mr. Santa" stand out in a less than flattering way. They're not terrible, but they don't really belong here among such serious and thematic songs; they're more suited to a children's album. The best songs on the album are surprisingly the more melancoly and reflective ones, such as "Till The Season Comes Round Again" and "Christmas Lullaby (I Will Lead You Home)", which is my favorite off the album and never fails to tear me up! Her use of choir and strings on "Silent Night" give it an almost ethereal feeling and "Welcome To Our World" is simply stunning. If there's a downside to this album, it's simply that it's too short, clocking in just shy of 40 minutes. I highly recommend this often overlooked album by one of the best vocalists around. Merry Christmas!!

Even though I don't own the CD yet, I have heard the songs and clips of them. They are awesome! Perfect Holiday album! Disney always puts out the best Christmas Albums hands down! Make sure to pick ur copy up today!

  3. Worth it for the Aly & AJ and Circle Of Stars tracks. But some things, such as the not so nice Hilary Duff remix, would have been better off replaced with other tracks from last year's version of this cd.

  4. I did enjoy this album for what it was. Everyone has pointed out the best Aly&AJ, Jesse, Raven, and Everlife..
But, I keep reading that 'Toy Town' by Christy is the weakest.

I slightly agree, only because, It is not dance-pop or pop/rock like the other tracks and gets lost, and the voice is SLIGHTLY whiney. [hoever] Christy's version of 'Toy Town' reminds me ALOT of an updated version of Brenda Lee. Basicly meaning it's current pop meets classic pop. Which isn't a bad thing but, simply doesn't fit this album.

Overall a nice little Disney Channel album.

  5. I've seen this happen with the Hilary Duff Santa Claus Lane CD. They release a 2nd CD or special edition later after the first release so you can buy the CD at the same price with 2-3 new songs on it. But with Radio Disney Jingle Jams, they replace some songs with new ones, making you buy both the 2004 (First Edition) & 2005 (Second Edition) Jingle Jams CD's so you have the old songs, (From 2004) the new songs, (From 2005) and the same 13 original songs. 3 comments about Big Band Christmas.
  1. Carmichael arranged the carols for Stan Kenton's Christmas LP 'way back in the early sixties, and re-records some of them here. He's added a female vocalist and a chorus for some pieces. Topnotch musicians, well recorded, great arrangements. I do think the Kenton recordings sounded better, to my ears, because of the use of mellophoniums and 5th trumpet and tuba, but Carmicheal's use of French horns is quite listenable. Kenton fans may hear the ghostly presence of Stan in there.

  2. The Carmichael group is one of those fine working bands still around. The musicians are, without exception, excellent. These folks play straight ahead big band music with great precision and clarity. It is a very "clean" band. All the fundamentals are there....tone quality, intonation, phrasing, dynamics, rhythm, articulation, attacks, releases, improvisation.....everything. This is a vibrant, sensitive, happy big band (if there is such a thing) that plays with passion and fire, has fun and swings like mad.

All of the techniques of great writing are evident thruout. There is all kinds of "stuff" going on....all the time. Carmichael is a great arranger who did lots of charts for Kenton and others from the 50's to the present. If you have Kenton's Christmas album (the band with 5 trpts, 4 trbs, and the mellophoniums) you will recognize many of these arrangements with a few modifications. Like the big, fat, "perverted 27th" chord (read 9th) at the end of God Rest Ye Merry.

This program reflects Carmichael's consummate skill. He is a master at writing counter lines, riffs and little "doo-dads". You hear them everywhere. His harmonies and chord structures are at once basic, sometimes complex, full, modern and fresh. Dissonance is used, but sooooo appropriately and tastefully. He's not afraid to "sit on the keyboard". Keep your ear open for the riffs, licks, slides, glisses, glides, counter lines and motifs, assorted beeps, bops, rips, pops, lifts, dips, flips, drops, fills, ka-chings, ba-dupes, ka-pows, duuu-dops, time shifts, beat shifts, and even (excuse me, Emmeril) some BAMS!

The section work is superb. They blend. They bite. They flow. They schoomze. They scream. The quality of the musicianship is also reflected in the interpretation. From tender, lovely, flowing, sensitive, smooth lines to powerful, biting, stinging, screaming punctuation...all driven by a superb rhythm section. It's all there. Don't think there is a weak link in the group.

I did have a problem with that funky little melodica synthesizer thingie (it's called a breath box) that the piano player uses on occasion, but got used to it. It does offer a whimsical contrast to the precision playing of the band. You will also be made delightfully aware of the presence of the bari sax and bs trb. Carmichael uses them precisely the way they were meant to be used.

Finally, you can actually hear ALL the music. For best listening get the CDs. The TV production is OK, but the CDs are outstanding. The mic placement, mixing, and engineering in general are superior. Unless you have one of those theater set ups, TVs have notoriously bad sound compared to a good stereo.

He has two albums, in addition to this Christmas album, currently available on Amazon.com.

One is "Big Band Classics", or something like that, on which they play those old chestnuts we have all played over the years. However, the sound on all the tunes, is much better than the originals...because you can hear stuff....because the finest, up to date equipment is used to record the band. The other album is a collection of "gospel" tunes. It too, is a great album with wonderful sound and interpretations. If you are a fan of big band music you will absolutely love these CDs. Ah garonteee!

  3. IMHO, sax is what takes a brass group and allows it to become a big band, and there's not enough of it on this CD. It's like there's this great brass or concert band arrangement, and once in a while they throw in some jazzy sax and call it big band. Not a bad CD, but I own better big band Christmas CDs, specifically Glenn Miller' 'In The Christmas Mood' (I and II), and the Pete Jacobs Orchestra, if you can find his stuff.

Nice, but not Big Band. Sorry.

5 comments about Christmas with the Brady Bunch.
  1. I like the Brady Bunch it is one of my favorite shows and I a have always admired the actors who played the Brady kids and I have heard them singing songs that I liked, Sun Shine Day among them so I bought the Christmas CD and sorry but I think it's awful! They can and have done much better!

  2. I believe that most people don't like this CD because it is sung by the children. For young children they are very good. I believe that they are very good for young children that have little experiance singing. I believe that if you are a true fan of the brady's and don't like younger children singing this is an amazing CD. I really loved it.

  3. This album is awful. I bought it for nostalgic/ ironic purposes, and it's not even good for those. The arrangements are terrible, and the singing is worse. The decision to use the character names instead of those of the real actors is strange. Even still, they misspell Marcia as Marsha. I like the Bradys and will point out that they later became competent vocalists with tuneful arrangements. This Christmas album seems to have been the reason they sought help. Again, I like the Bradys but I can't think of any reason for this to still be in print. (If you like it, don't let me change your mind- I'm just giving one perspective.) The only decent arrangement is Frosty, and you can get it on the Sunshine Day compilation. The only good news is, if you're a completist or a masochist, this collection is always cheap. In all, a really bad album. I don't recommend.

  4. Yes, it's kids singing and it sounds like it. But know what? It's cute. Don't buy it if you are looking for something other than a kids' singalong, but it's fun if you like the Brady Bunch. Also if you're nostalgic like me. It's fun and cute and great for family listening. Better than some newer Christmas CDs I have, in fact, because - face it - we do know all these songs. If you sing along, sing real loud!

  5. When Mahalia Jackson heard Barry William's version, she died of a broken heart.

    True story.

5 comments about Winter in Scotland: A Highland Christmas.
  1. Nothing matches the feeling you get from holding a cup of Hot Cider in hand, sitting by a warm fire on a Cold Winter's Night and listening to beautiful renditions of Christmas Songs you've known since you can remember...

Steven McDonald brings his passion for the Scottish Highlands, in blissful pipes & drums, to such classic Christmas carols as "Angels We Have Heard On High," "The Little Drummer Boy," and "O Come All Ye Faithful." His voice blends perfectly harmonious with Holly Smith's soulful, soothing vocals.

Sixteen-year-old Holly Smith is an absolutely wonderful discovery - her smooth and lovely voice with its ageless depth, can indeed only be a gift from Heaven! My favorite songs from this collection are her solo of "O Holy Night" and a duet with McDonald of "Silent Night." These songs conjure exquisite feelings of peace, tranquility, and glowing warmth.

My only reason for giving this CD 4 stars instead of 5 is a personal one, and therefore may or may not be an actual criticism of the album itself. I felt that two of the songs didn't quite belong here: "Amazing Grace," which, although a wonderful song, didn't quite fit in so well with this particular collection of holiday music, and "Happy Christmas," which, though beautifully rendered seemed too modern to flow very eloquently with the otherwise timeless Christmas classics.

Yet, all wrapped up, I hold this album dear to my heart. I listen to it often, and it warms my Spirit to the Season.

  2. I just reviewed "A Highland Christmas" by Eric Rigler, and saw this and hoped it would be what I expected of the other one; so I screened it. It's the same schlock as the other one. That keyboard is really cheesey and permeates the CD. I have heard that the old Scotland is all but dead, but when I see the pipers at Bethlehem Pennsylvania's Celtic Festival, it is hard to believe. But this music tells me to call the coroner. Some-one please produce a Christmas CD with either solo piper, or pipe and drum corps. Throw in indigenous instruments as needed, and lose that keyboard. You may have to get the Scottish artists from the land of Ellis Island.

  3. I have owned this CD for several years. I find myself singing along constantly, especially in the car, on several tracks. The originality of the arrangements of some classic pieces makes you really listen and appreciate them all over again. Auld Lang Syne is one of those, as is Silent Night, with a haunting descant. "It's Christmastime" is a new song for me and it rings in my head all through December. This is one of my favorite Christmas CD's and I gave several as early gifts this year. Both friends feel the same way as I do about this little known treasure. You won't go wrong in purchasing it.

  4. What a refreshingly different Christmas Holiday edition!!! I had reservations about purchasing another Holiday CD - but these selections (some familiar and some new) are really done in a great Celtic manner!!!

If you like the Celtic sound, you will love this CD.

  5. I love Scotch/Irish music and Steven McDonald's in paticular. Not glitzy -a nice mix of tempo and mood. The man can do no wrong in my book. I'm happy to add it to my Christmas music collection.

5 comments about Feliz Navidad.
  1. This is one of the best Christmas albums ever recorded. The amazing genius of Jose Feliciano shines thru in every song. This album is probably one of Jose's most special albums and for his fans as well. Longtime Feliciano fans (myself included) have long for this LP to be release on CD and after 32 years it finally became a reality. On this record Jose goes back to a style of simplicity which he's always been known for. All of the songs were recorded with very little instrumentation. In fact the only other instrument that appears on the album besides Jose's guitar is a little of percussion and very little drums too little to really notice. Jose's voice is smooth and clear as a bell and the emotion that he puts into everyone of these holiday standards is evident when you hear the album. I love the guitar instrumentals like "Jingle Bells" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" which has Jose really rocking with the acoustic guitar really excellent. "Las Posadas" is a beautiful song like "Santa Claus" that was not included in the original LP released in 1970. Felciano's mellow and easy going style is pure and honest and you can't help but to be deeply moved by this beautiful song sung in his native tongue. This is a beautiful album that is a timeless classic and will be enjoyed from generation to generation. Now that RCA has finally made it available on CD it should reach a wider audience and makes a perfect gift during the holidays or just listening to Jose's beautiful voice and crisp and mellow guitar drinking a glass of Eggnog by the fire.

  2. What a pleasure it was to disover this album finally back in print after all these years. Thirty years ago, Jose Feliciano made "Feliz Navidad" a modern-day Christmas classic and it is, of course, the title song on this CD. But wait, there's more. Jose's mellow voice and expert classical guitar playing make every song a treat to listen to. And nearly every song is, to say the least, non-traditional.

A good example is Jingle Bells. Played as an instrumental with latin tempo, it becomes a real toe-tapper. Then there are the less common carols such as the "Cherry Tree Carol." Well sung, well played.

This is very simply a great Christmas album, ranking right up there with the holiday albums of Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole. At $11, what a bargain!

  3. Okay,so I must have a later CD release of this album, as I have only the 12 original tracks and not the three bonus tracks apparent here (and I bought mine just last year right here on Amazon--dang--I would love to have those extras). Nonetheless, like nearly each review here has cited, I was thrilled to find this wonderful holiday album finally available (it is almost impossible to find on vinyl, being long out of print). Jose Feliciano covers traditional Christmas tunes like "Jingle Bells" and "White Christmas" with a subtlety that is both hip and refreshing, dusts off a few war horses like "Silent Night" and "The First Noel" to infuse them with a surprising poignancy, and discovers more obscure material like "The Cherry Tree Carol" and "Mary's Little Boy Child" to place them at the center of this intelligent and gentle offering. I did buy three copies, two as gifts, as this one ranks as one of the best Christmas albums ever produced, and I love sharing my loves with my loves. Do not hesitate; find a copy of this treasure.

  4. From the first time I heard this album in 1979, it has been my favorite Christmas album. I was never able to find the record, as it was already out of print, but my neighbor graciously made a tape of it from his very carefully taken-care-of record. I long ago wore out that tape. About three years ago I began searching for the record online, and though I saw a few on ebay, they nearly always sold for over $75, so I never bought one.

I am so thrilled that this album is again in print, and I hope that many more people find it as wonderful as I do. The extra cuts are fabulous.

    Thank you, Jose!

  5. I bought the CD for a Christmas gift as my boyfriend loves his version of Feliz Navidad. We have played that song over and over again but the rest of the CD is just OK.

  1. You can tell that the musicians had a fun time making this album and love Christmas.

  2. Fun stuff, but don't let this be your introduction to Marah. It is fun though

  3. Some of this happy album sounds recorded live, but I would have loved to have seen Marah actually doing it up, maybe in a beery little dive bar, because it's got a great concept and good, cheery Christmasy stuff. But, I'm afraid, something, as so often happens, gets a little lost in the studio. It's a little dry, a little forced, plenty of good will, but could have used just a wee bit more. I like Marah, and I'm digging this as I clean off a table I haven't cleaned off in years so I can put down some food for my girlfriend, who wouldn't know my house straightened up if it dropped on her head. Marah is carrying me along here and I'm getting into the feel a little bit more for the holiday. I got some good booze and some cheese and salami and some more booze and some sweet treats and we should have a pretty good time. Merry Christmas to these guys and thanks for the fun album. Just wish you had recorded it live at Lauterbachs, an old Brooklyn hole back in the 80s that is the true ghost of rock n' roll christmas' past.

  4. I love Marah, so when I heard a Christmas album was coming out I was stoked. To begin, there are a lot of great songs on this album. "Baby Its Cold Outside" is always a great song. "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is produced well. However, I wish Marah had just made an album without attempting to put all the extra dialogue and cheesy additions into the album. Some of the talking sections seem very forced almost as if the people involved weren't even really talking to each other when they recorded it. The strange voices on some of the songs can be annoying. Overall, its still a must have Christmas album, but if there is a next time, just record some songs and leave voice acting alone.

  1. I was so disappointed. I didn't think Vince gill could do anything bad but this thing was practically Christmas Muzak. We played it ONE time and threw it in the trash.

  2. This 2006 release of two of Vince Gill's Christmas collections from
1993 and 1998 are classic recordings, enhanced for better sound reproduction. Can't imagine giving this one star as the previous
reviewer has, just read the reviews from the 1993 "Let there be peace
on earth" and the 1998 "Breathe of Heaven" collections. Timeless, beautiful music(even if its not your style, its Christmas music sung by
one of the most respected vocalist out there country, pop whatever) almost
everyone can relate to this noncommerical side of the holiday season with
the music (standards to personal to religious) and rich arrangements offered on both collections.
Well worth having in anyone's Christmas collection, nostalgic, haunting,
festive, Vince Gill with a touch of his many sides.

  1. This CD by master harpist Rachel Van Voorhees has over 25 tracks of wonderful Jewish music. You'll find favorites such as Zum Gali Gali, Dreydl, Erev Shel Shoshannim, Hatikvah, Kvare Achare Chatzot (my personal favorite) and many, many other selections. Van Voorhees exhibits a wide array of tone colors, tempos, and styles in the music, which she arranged herself. This CD would make a perfect gift, and would serve well as background music to any party, Shabbat dinner, or simply as a relaxer! I highly recommend Rachel Van Voorhees' Jewish Favorites.

  2. This music arranged by Rachel Van Voorhees is simply beautiful and relaxing. There are 35 separate pieces, varied and lovely. There are some klezmer-origin type songs, yet they are lively but soft, and blend well with the rest of the CD. The sound quality is excellent.

Though I haven't been raised with Jewish music and therefore don't know whether the meanings of some of the songs would be appropriate for various formal events (like weddings), I can say that out of the 35 songs, there are surely some that would be suitable regardless of whether the event is a wedding, a nice Shabbat dinner, meditation, or simply relaxation as you're falling asleep.

  3. I find this CD really soothes my road rage in the car and makes me feel that nothing bothers me. Overall, the tracks may sound similar if you are paying attention to your driving, but that's not a bad thing when they're all good. But when I bring it inside and pay attention, I find the subtleties to be enjoyable and charming. Avinu Malkeinu is my favorite, bringing tears to my eyes the first time I heard this version.

This CD was a recommendation to me by friends, and now I am making the same recommendation to others.
