5 comments about Hellbent.
  1. If you like horror films and are gay or simply open minded about different life styles you will love this film. I was surprised to find this movie as good as it is. Great cast and well written "Hellbent" is made in the tradition of your normal horror film. Someone is killing gay guys in West Hollywood and it's only a matter of time before the killer continues to strike. You also care for the characters. The cast is also filled with hot hunks. A must for Halloween movie buffs!

  2. Okay, the first time I watched Hellbent I wasn't totally sold on it but when I saw it again I really liked it a lot. One of the best parts is that it takes a normal Slasher-film formula and gives it the gay theme. I've oftne commented to my friends how gay people never appear in Horror films and now there's an entire movie of them. It was really cool to see how just guys dealt with a psycho slasher as opposed to the iconic top heavy blonde bombshells who always have to run upstairs or out into the woods in heels (who the hell does that?). The other great thing was the killer. (Spoiler alert)-You never find out the killer's motive. How cool is that! It makes him even more terrifying because you can't humanize him. He is really just this psycho out for blood for no other reason than because he likes to do it. That's what horror is all about. The boogie man that comes for you just because he can...and he does.

  3. Beautiful eye candy. Nice twists. Not the best acting you've seen, but keeps you on the edge of your seat. Somewhat gruesome, but again, not the grossest.

  4. Decent production values, some fun gore, handsome guys but little beyond that. There is no background, no history, no big reveal of the killer. Without a preset motive or potential villians, it's just a bunch of pretty boys taking turns being beheaded. Whatever.

  5. "Hellbent" is a nifty little thriller with a good personality. It does what it is supposed to do--chills and thrills--and still manages to make its small cast of characters endearing before subjecting them to the razor sharp sickle of a stalker in a devil costume. Set amidst the sexually charged, funky glamor of the annual Halloween Carnival in tres gay West Hollywood, the film has been touted as the first gay slasher movie. I don't know if that's true, or if there has been a general outcry over gays being underrepresented in filmdom's slasher genre, but whatever the case, "Hellbent" is here, and it's done with a certain amount of flair. Director Paul Etheredge-Ouzts knows how to wring a maximum amount of tension from a scene, and he brings a sense of visual excitement to the film, in spite of the occasional clunky dialogue and plot contrivances necessary for any slasher film (i.e., getting characters to go off into dark, isolated areas when they know that there's a murderer on the loose). To be sure, the killer's targets, four friends out for a Halloween night on the town, are not rocket scientists, but each has his own set of quirks and foibles that separate one character from the other, and each one is likeable.

Dylan Fergus makes a handsome, appealing lead, a wannabe cop with one glass eye and the other eye on heartfelt romance; he's a sweet-natured, virginal dreamer, about as far from a tough guy as you can imagine. Andrew Levitas is also convincing as the wild, anything-goes, best friend whose motto seems to be "anyone, anyplace, anytime". Whether it's male or female, he's on it, and he's always ready for action. Hank Harris, playing the naive youngster of the bunch, and Matt Phillips, as a muscular underwear model doing drag for the first time, do nice turns rounding out the group, while Bryan Kirkwood alternates between creepy/sexy and outright annoying as an edgy biker being wooed by our hero.

True, "Hellbent" is bloody, although not egregiously so. Compared to any of the films in the "Saw" franchise, for instance, it's pretty tame. There's one murder committed on a crowded dance floor that is particularly creative and stylishly filmed--it belies the film's budgetary restrictions. The climax of "Hellbent", which finds one of the friends handcuffed to a bed (courtesy of edgy biker-boy) while the killer lurks nearby is effective and scary, even if it is predictable. And the film's final shot is set up so that you don't know whether to laugh or scream.

There have been worse slasher films than "Hellbent", and there have been better. But, there hasn't been a better gay slasher film, so I guess that's saying something. If you're weary of the endlessly cliched and tired parade of gay coming-of-age films, and those god-awful gay "comedies" that have been churned out in recent years ("Slutty Summer", "Another Gay Movie"), then you might want to check out "Hellbent".

5 comments about Satan's Little Helper.
  1. Well, this movie is a low budget film, BUT it has some gore, good kills, a funny twist, and some good Halloween fun in it. I've seen some BAD movies and this wasn't that bad at all. I actually liked it. It made me laugh, say ewwwww, and surprised me too. It's certainly worth the 5.00 price tag here. I was amused and pretty pleased. Then again, I REALLY have a thing for Halloween.

  2. Satan's "costume" or make up didn't look realistic. I was a little disappointed because I don't like movies in which people kill other people. I prefer to see supernatural forces doing all the destruction. Only watch this movie if you have run out of movies to watch and you don't feel like reading a book or going out.

  3. Don't be misled by the DVD cover design. This isn't one of those "horrid" horror films, it is a bright, funny, charming and finely made horror film with all the classical horror story attributes of fun and art. It is colourful and atmospheric and unusually for these days all the characters are sympathetic, while the killer loses none of his ogre value in being funny. I've only seen this once, but I am certain this is a fine film that must become a Halloween classic. It excels in Halloween imagery. Like other good horror films it has a satirical theme underlying it, in this case that of the wrong type of video games drawing children into violence and personal disaster. Wholesome in every sense I think, hence the five stars.

  4. I would have preferred it without the cat scene, so three stars instead of four for that alone. Otherwise a very effective movie for Halloween, and even though I prefer them without humour, with this one, the humour worked and really was funny. Mainly because of the kid, (Satan's little helper) a nerdy, geeky little kid, extremely credulous, obsessed with the computer game entitled "Satan's Little Helper", to the extent that he totally confused fantasy with reality. He was hilarious in believing that firstly, 'Satan' (killer in groovy mask) really was: Satan, and secondly, believing that killer in Jesus mask really was: God, and thirdly, believing that killer in cop mask and outfit really was a cop, in spite of all evidence to the contrary. His conversations with 'Satan', 'God', and then the cop, were the most effectively humorous points in the movie. "Are you Satan?" "Are you God?" And all they had to do was nod, without ever speaking a word. Classic!
I loved the Satan mask and outfit, so cool, if only people dressed up like that for Halloween everywhere and wandered around in the shops getting provisions and carrying a shopping basket, so funny! To be honest, I'd have preferred a Halloween movie utilising all the effective costumes and sets that this movie had, but without the humour, but at least here, it worked. Not the most wonderful thing I've ever seen, but not bad either. It's certainly a great movie for Halloween.

  5. I caught this flick on TV last night and I was quite intrigued. Well, curiosity killed THIS cat because this movie SUCKED! It started out promising but by the end of the movie I had a huge headache thanks to the boring plot, really slow pacing, and the implausible story. Who knew a serial killer movie could be such a snooze? Rent the original Halloween and leave this one in the DVD dust bin.

5 comments about Peter Cincotti, Live in New York with a Bonus CD "On the Moon" (Monster Music High Definition Surround Sound Audio DVD SUPERDISC).
  1. I ordered this without really knowing what to expect -- a 'live' concert recording perhaps? -- but the final product did not disappoint.

I've been a fan of Peter's music since his debut album release, and caught his performances at a showcase in Singapore followed by a Rome concert a few months later.

His Live In New York DVD features a comprehensive collection of all his famous works, from I Changed The Rules to Sway to St. Louis Blues and On The Moon. Filmed outdoors on a small neighbourhood street in NYC, it starts off in the day, then mellows into a beautiful sunset, before picking up the tempo as the stars emerge.

Lots of great energy here, as Peter jams with his excellent band and displays obvious enjoyment in his mega-watt smiles and rhythmic head-bopping. The sound quality on this high-definition disc is amazing, so make sure you watch it in the evening in a nice, quiet setting for maximum enjoyment.

I especially love his performances of Sway, You Don't Know Me and The Girl I Knew ( the last a bonus track and as yet unreleased ).

Guaranteed to satisfy all Peter Cincotti fans adequately. But I'm still hoping for a proper concert recording in the near future. An appreciative 'live' audience would be the icing on the cake.

  2. What a joy it is to watch Peter Cincotti and his band on this great DVD "Live in New York"! Peter breathes new life into the songs from both his debut album as well as his most recent release, "On The Moon" which is included with the DVD. You can hear the Ray Charles influence on "The Girl I Knew". So much so that I was certain it was one of "The Genius"'s songs! What a pleasant surprise to learn that the song was written by Peter himself! The performances are nothing short of excellent. I guarantee, "A Night in Tunisia" will leave you speechless! In this world of lip sync and lackluster deliveries of songs, Peter Cincotti is like a fine glass of Cabernet after far too many years of grape juice. And like Caberbet, he will contiue to grow better with time.

  3. Peter Cincotti has continued to grow as a performer of tremendous natural talent and great ability. His easy, engaging style makes him a singer and pianist that you will want to enjoy again and again.

  4. Sometimes you bought a DVD hoping a great sound.
Sometimens you ger some DVD hoping a great hi rez image.
In this one I hope for both and I didn't get none.
Boring, easy listening, fully marketing oriented.
    The image is too lighting.
    Forget about it.

  5. Peter Cincotti is a great pianist and singer; his voice is full of emotion and very sexy. I am so amazed at his arrangements, especially the upbeat "I Love Paris"; I can never sit still and always feel like dancing. From fast songs to slow songs, he draws me in. It doesn't hurt that he's charismatic and quite dashing as well. His band is also superb and beyond awesome. I wish there were more interviews on the DVD, but I would recommend it absolutely.

5 comments about Boogeymen - The Killer Compilation.
  1. First off I will say that this DVD is only for Horror movie fans. It is not a documentry, what it is a 50 minute long main presentation of the best horror movie icons. and it shows a quick intro of that charactor, then an actual scene of one of the films they where in, and then moves onto the next... there's ALMOST all the fav's of the horror genre....

    - Jason Voorhees (Friday The 13th)
    - Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elm St)
    - Michael Myers (Halloween)
    - Chucky (Childs Play)
    - Blade (Puppet Master)
    - Leprochaun (Leprachaun)
    - Leather Face (Texas Chainsaw Masacre)
    - Fisherman (I know what you did last summer)
    - Ghost (Scream)
    - Candyman (Candy man)
    - Norman Bates (Phycho)
    - Simon Cartright (The Ugly)
    - Pin Head (Hellraiser)

But they have forgotten about a few that I thought should have been included...

    - Skeleton Zombie (Return Of The Living Dead 1 + 2)
    - Ghoulies (Ghoulies)
    - Carrie White (Carrie)
    - Evil Dead (Evil Dead Trilogy Villians ect..)
    - Critters (Critters)
    - Wicked Witch (Wizard Of Oz)
    - Crypt Keeper (Tales from the crypt)
    - Michael Jackson (Moonwalker)

The extra features are an Audio Commentary by Robert England (Freddy Krueger) which isnt something you'll listen to again I dont think, and you get an on screen trivia option which disaplys bits of information about the movie as it's playing the clip, i'd recomend you turn the trivia on and listen to the commentary at the same time to kill 2 birds with one stone.

There is a trivia game that is not worth looking at, you press start and it shows a picture and you just have to select what movie it's from, but there is no point, you can anser as many as ya want, it doesnt lead you to anything!

There is a biography of each of the people from the feature presnatation.

and Trailers to a couple of the movies on the feature, but not all of them.

There's also a link for anyone with a DVD on there computer, and your usual subtitles, 5.1 surround ect....

Overall: like I said, if you like horror movies, then you might like this if you care to know a bit of information on the films that you probably already knew, other wise it's not worth much, just seeing scenes from films together on one DVD is ok, but not lastingly thrilling, the scenes they chose couldve been better, they have picked some lame scenes to show in some areas. It would be great to see all of these horror icons meet on the big screen in an ultimate horror icon battle royal, but with all the copyright hassel to do something like that, this is most likely the closet we will get to see all of them together on the one show. I would recomend you rent it before you decide if you want to buy it.

  2. Boogeymen is a awesome jam packed dvd!!!!!! For all us horror buffs like myself this has all the killers on one dvd!!!!! They include Freddy, Jason, Chucky, Ghostface, and Fishermen!!!!! The dvd is packed with great bonus features like commentary from Robert Englund aka Freddy!!!!! Trailers from the scariest movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacare and Candyman!!!!!! It also has a indepth bio on each boogeymen!!!!!! This is a must in any horror dvd collection!!!!!

  3. this dvd includes exellent scenes from the horror genre such as 1.hellraiser 2.a nightmare on elm street 3.the texas chainsaw massacre 4.scream 5.child's play 2 6.candyman 7.leprachaun 8.the ugly 9.wishmaster(djinn) 10.the gaurdian 11.I know what you did last summer(by lois duncan)12.dentist 13.phantasm 14.puppetmaster 15.american psycho(1960) 16.final friday(f13) 17.halloween. plus a bonus scene from jack frost II,first to get the clip from jack frost2 you go to special features, then flix mix recommends, then push the right arrow(not left),then you will see jack frost highlighted, push enter/select then you have a clip from jack frost 2! but enough of that let us talk about how this all started, well when I was five me and my dad had rented jeepers creepers advertised on it was boogeymen,i was amazed, because when i was three i saw my first horror film.from then onward i knew i could not give up on flix like these. so i thought about it for 4 years and i finally saw it back on shelves at wal-mart packaged along with land of the dead,so i decided to use a couple of bucks out of my allowence.soi rushed my mom to wal-mart to by it, i have 2 favourite clips 9.wishmaster bonus.jack frost 2,cool huh? in other words i love this movie special features:name that frame game, animated trivia, audio commentary,dvd-rom features, theatrical trailers(preveiws),legends of the boogeymen.

  4. so you're af fan of big time slashers also huh?sure you are,i know i am in fact i am a die hard fan of this dvd.clips from...hellraiser,a nightmare on elm st.,wishmaster, texas chainsaw massacre, scream,i know what you did last summer, child's play 2,leprechaun,the ugly, the dentist, phantasm, candyman, the gaurdian, the puppetmaster,psycho(1960),jason goes to hell:final friday, halloween, and jack frost2:revenge of the mutant killer snowman, anyway, you're probably also a fan of jack frost, and can't find it on scene selection, well in this case,go to special features,go to flixmix recomends, press the right button on the controller, jack frost will be highlighted, pick it and you watching jack frost do his magic.

  5. Sometimes, I'm just in the mood to watch the best parts of my favorite scary movies, and this compiles them into one neat package. I don't have to take out all my DVDs just to watch the "good parts" of my favorite Horror films. Plus, there's a commentary by Robert Englund (Freddy). Even by himself, he keeps your interest.
If you're just getting in Horror, it gives you a little taste of some of the best.

It's just a few bucks, you can't really go wrong. If you hate it, you only lose about 4 bucks.

  1. Very interesting to my 2 yr old grandaughter. Excellant for the upcoming holiday.

  2. Even for those parents, who are not Barney fans, this DVD is a good one. The songs are cute & our two year old son manages to be able to sing along with some of them. The decorations that they make (spiders from hand prints, ghosts from foot prints) will give you some ideas of ways to entertain your children around Halloween. The costumes are good - certainly not too scary for small children. Overall, our son gives it two thumbs up and requests this DVD by name (even after Halloween)!

5 comments about When Good Ghouls Go Bad.
  1. We first saw this movie on ABC Family. It's just enough of a scare for the entire family no matter the age. There's humor, too!

  2. We are a family that is ALL about Halloween and with small kids this movie entertains the adults and is fun for the kids. Christopher Lloyd is just great as a zombie. This movie is now one of my favorites even before the heat of summer is over!!

  3. [warning: review contains spoilers]

From Goosebumps' author R.L. Stine comes this delighful Halloween-themed tale, both charming and evocatively enjoyable:

Founded by the delightfully eccentric "Uncle" Fred Walker, Walker Falls has not seen a Halloween for years because of a purported "curse" placed upon it by one "Curtis Danko" {obvious 'Donnie Darko' influenced nomenclature}, labeled the town "weirdo" for his preference to dress in black, and express his imagination with monsters, and scenes of a world gone mad. His creativity is clearly envied by others, and thus, they react in fearful passive-aggressive manners which are no less than despicable, displaying their inferior and odious ill-natures.

So once when the art class project was to sculpt a depiction of one's hero*, the school bully and cronies lock him in the incinerator as a prank. He actually resembles Edward Scissorhands while sculpting.

Urban Legend: He refused for anyone to see his project, guarding it from all during the day. He returns at night to work on it in private. Next one morning, when Mike Kankel walks into the classroom, he notices something is wrong, and discovers Danko's ashes in the incinerator with his statue, with a forboding message written in the ashes, that if the town celebrates Halloween, he will return and face his wrath:

"If you ever have another Halloween again, I will return and destroy you all!"

Kankel pretends at blindness, claiming that the statue is so terrible that no one should look upon it as if made by someone counceled by The Devil, lest they go blind, or head explode, or even turn to stone, a-la Medusa's glare. So the ashes and statue are sealed within a crypt with nicely arranged cob-webbed chains.

Factuality: After a teasing session, Danko is incarcerated in the incinerator to be left until the following morning. Unfortunately, an absent-minded janitor accidentally taps the 'on' button, immolating Danko. Terrified of being blamed for his murder, he writes the warning in the ashes himself and claims that looking upon the statue blinded him for three days. It was later confessed that now Coach Kankel did it because funds were being directed into the fine arts at the school instead of sports activities.

'Uncle' Walker's grandson Danny arrives from Chicago to attend this new school, and is bullied by Kankel's son and his moronic hench boy. Despite this, he befriends Dayna who shows him marvelous secrets within Danko's haunted house, where, unbeknownst to the a-dolt towns people, the Magic of Halloween has been preserved - skeletons, skulls, demons, monsters, ghouls, bats, spiders, ghosts, zombies, witches, are all here in this abandoned mansion to be enjoyed in secret by the towns children**.

When Danny's business-minded father James suggests the town hold a "Spooktacular" Halloween celebration at a town meeting, the residents go bananas with fear, especially when time and time again, Halloween decorations begin mysteriously appearing about. James Walker seeks to re-open the Walker Chocolate factory {also founded by nucleus Uncle Walker, in a Willy Wonka vein}, with the help of soon-arriving German Businessmen, and the support of the towns people.

Uncle Walker is quite a character, who listens to his Hammond Organ recordings on his jukebox, building elaborate tracks for his hot wheels, surrounded by amusing nick knacks, while attired in various playful outfits. He serves as a true father for Danny, since his dad is virtually un-present in the goings-on of his life. Someone who could actually offer the wisdom of experience as well as be a playmate and friend. Also mentionable is the sage wisdom imparted to Danny about the Magic of Halloween...

So when he apparently dies from a bash on the head by a falling pumpkin from a veritable pumpkin mountain pile which strangely appears in the town square, his heart is broken until he later returns as a zombie to help him place Danko's statue in its rightful place. In the meantime, several amusing circumstances unfold including the appearance of 'Cheesy The Clown' {quite a Lokian depiction}, and Uncle Walker retrieving his runaway hand, a-la Thing {especially humorous considering Christopher Lloyd wonderfully portrayed Uncle Fester in treasured films 'The Addams Family' & 'Addams Family Values'}.

When Danko returns from the grave with green-glowing eyes in skeletal form, who along with various other zombies, at the secret Halloween dance, all is finally set to balance as Halloween is restored, after a shameful spectacle and confession by Coach Kankel, the statue is finally seen, which provides for quite a surprise, followed by a moving ending scene and narration.

    * Interesting to note that I actually sculpted a statue for art class of a Baphomet-headed Satan in a robe wearing a pentagram medallion, holding a sword in one hand and signifying The Cornu with the other. To My surprise, Sgt. Randy Emon was notified, who took photos of it for his occult portfolio.

** It can be observed that the mansion may also be considered a metaphor for the subconscious accumulation of archetypal images of fear and memento moris, waiting to be released and celebrated. To deny them only causes an unbalanced psyche.

  4. I remembered watching this movie on ABC Family (I believe it was Fox Family at the time). I never knew that it was released to DVD, so when I saw it, I had to have it. It brought back some great memories. I love this movie. Great flick for the whole family, and since it was written by R.L. Stine, it's great for all ages.

  5. An excellent "fun for the whole family" halloween film:) It is geared more toward young teens but a delightful Halloween movie for all ages! It is based around bringing the spirit of Halloween into a town that has essentially banned all to do with "Halloween". A young boy and his "dead" grandfather turn around the town's views on this spooky festive fall holliday!

5 comments about The Hollow.
  1. I actually caught this crapfest on the Sci-Fi channel the other night. That's exactly what it was, a crapfest. I didn't even know I was looking at Nick Carter until I read some of these reviews, which I consider a blessing. No wonder that family has so many problems. And such veteran actors such as Judge Reinhold and Stacy Keach must have been really desperate for cash if they committed to this schlock. And don't even get me started on the headless horseman. He was as about as convincing as a special effect in a cheesy 50's science fiction movie. If you want to see the best version of the story, watch Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. If you want originality, either watch Ichabod and Mr. Toad or read the original story.

  2. I liked this movie for the reason being that it was a different take on the "Sleepy Hollow" story. The story unfolded in a manner that it held your attention all the way through the movie. The acting was very solid in this B flick as well. I would recommend this movie to anyone that loves B-horror flicks!!!

  3. The movie gets a 3 but it was fun. However, Nick Carter gets a 10 but you only have a 5

  4. Clutching desperately at the coattails of Washington Irving's classic tale, "The Hollow" is a modest horror flick that will keep you entertained, either with humor (intentional and unintentional) or a few decent scares. I originally saw this flick on ABC Family about three years ago. It has recently popped up on Sci-Fi channel. It's a lot better than seventy-five percent of Sci-Fi channel's flicks, but does fit comfortably in that channel's Saturday movie lineup. It's cast has a little something for everybody. There's new stars for the younger crowd (Kevin Zegers, Kaley Cuoco), former 80's teen stars (Judge Reinhold), an old guy (Stacey Keach) and a former boy band superstar (Nick Carter).

The story is centered around the return of Ichabod Crane's bloodline (Zegers) to the village of Sleepy Hollow. When Halloween comes along, Zegers moves in on the high school football jock's girlfriend (Cuoco) and quickly makes an enemy out of said jock (Carter). Teenagers go missing, and despite warnings from the cemetary keeper (Keach), the village goes on with it's Halloween Hayride, giving a returning Headless Horseman easy pickings. Keach tries to convince Zegers that he's a descendant of Crane and that the Horseman has returned to finish a job he started many years ago. Initially Zegers denies the possibility of being related to Crane. As the story goes on, however, he begins to realize that he is Crane's descendant and only he can stop the Horseman from going on another killing spree. Heads roll, there are plenty of near-misses, and Carter, Keach and Reinhold really chew up the scenery for the rest of the movie.

When all is said and done, the viewer won't feel entirely cheated by this film. Yes, it has some very bad moments in it, but those moments are what makes this film fun. There are also a few legitimate scares throughout for the audience. You won't be afraid to go roaming down deserted country roads at night after seeing this movie, but you will have a pretty good time seeing just how silly and spooky this film can be. I'd consider it a rental, especially around Halloween, if you prefer your horror a little bit on the light side. If you can find it in the bargain bin and happen to be a fan of B-grade horror, this just might be a fun purchase.

  5. This is a recent remake of the sleep hollow. It was maybe back in 2004. I think it's scarier because it was done like Jaws where the first half of the movie you don't see the whole horse man. A couple days befor hallowen the headless horse man rises from the depths of hell seeking out heads. 1. when before there used to be just disney films, recent technological developments gave the opportunity for animated movie producers to release several animated films in a year that you almost cannot keep track anymore. some of them, sadly, became mere exercises in digital graphics, mostly marketing the film through the famous hollywood actors who record the characters' voices. i've stopped looking forward to new animated flicks of late, including monster house that i passed up when it was shown in theaters.

but unlike other animated films (mostly with talking animals) that even failed to capture my attention when shown on the small screen, monster house was unlike anything i've seen before.

the plot is typical - three prepubescent youngsters try to "kill" an evil house from eating halloween trick-or-treaters. but the typical ends there. the movie is filled with witty dialog and three-dimensional characters in a setting that has both its light and dark moments. there are no cookie-cutter characters here - well, maybe the protagonists were cut off from the same mold as your average middle class suburban kids, but they were portrayed so naturally as far as movie tweeners go, bringing in an added sprinkling of spice in them. the frontline bad guy nebbercracker was the typical grumpy recluse who drives away kids from his front lawn, but later in the film reveals a rich story that centers on the plot.

everyone else in between was there to bring in the token comic relief - the goth babysitter, her rocker boyfriend, the video game dork, the police officers - all in a naturally amusing manner that was never contrived.

i was aghast learning from imdb.com that ours is the only country where this movie had a G rating. for instance, there was a minor scene where rocker boyfriend attempted to make out with babysitter on the sofa. and while the main characters seemed generally well-adjusted, the story behind the house seemed too dark for young kids. the house looked really scary, for one. even scarier than the creatures in jumanji, which had a PG rating. the film also explores adult issues, complicated grey areas like what to do if your loved one became an evil vengeful spirit, or moral questions such as "does this movie unintentionally portray obese people as evil/scary?" that can get ingrained on impressionable minds. while the themes of unconditional love, devotion and letting go can be for all ages, it was shown so poignantly in the movie with adult sensibilities.

well, i don't know. i watched this movie as an adult and enjoyed it very much. it lacked the air of happy-ever-after that most children's flicks are known for, but at least for the kids, the movie ended up happily. that is, for the neighborhood, not exactly for nebbercracker who, though seemingly happy himself for his newfound freedom, would naturally have to deal with his grief and maybe regret not being able to live his life for 40 years (plus, where would he live now?). to balance off these complications, the last part where all the toys were returned and all the people who were eaten up managed to climb out of the pit was a nice touch. definitely for the young ones' benefit.

memorable quote from the supporting character skull (the videogame enthusiast), attempting to impart some words of wisdom:
"In my travels to video game and comic book conventions, I've seen many strange and wondrous things".

  2. This movie is hilarious! The idea for this animated/horror/comedy/kids kick butt film was good, and then it's execution makes it a knockout. First of all, the way the boys act around the girl is SO FUNNY! ("DJ! You pee in bottles?!?")

I was laughing throughout the whole movie, from the beginning to the end, when they enter the house with a large arsenal of...water guns.

We need more movies like this!

    Four and a half stars!

  3. Good product, great prices, speedy delivery. I'm completely satisfied as is my son who loves his DVD.

  4. This is a fun, spooky movie for kids but us adults enjoyed it too. The effects are really neat, the things the house does. I found some good humor in it as well. I may not watch it 10 times, but most kids will.

  5. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Spooky scary. Probably too much so for kids under 11. Highly recommend.

  1. Every once in a while they manage to film a really good Ghost Story and they have done it with this movie. The viewer is introduced to Allan, a College kids back in the 1970's who is hitchiking to Lewiston in Maine to visit his ill mother. Allan is confronted by the ghosts of his past and present during his long lonely walk to the hospital. This movie is dark, eerie and very atmospheric and this is one film which I would have liked to have watched on the big screen. The extra feature included in this DVD is Allan's sketch book which is alone makes this movie worth watching. Bravo to all concerned with the making of this film.

  2. i also love every adaptation of kings books even storm of the century & rose red was cheezy but had good acting & was semi scary. this started out really good & like the others. once he begins his journey its over from their, first you find out that he is a supper wimp that tries to act cool, a character that is saposed to not be the main charcter unless a comedy, he is afraid of even an old weak man. david arquete cant act his way out of nut sack, so theirs no saprise that this is his worst movie ever. they try to play every sceen with at lease 3 ways that the situation could happen in his head but dosent come true, that is a great use of showing horror or scary elements that dont happen but thats the whole movie, no one really dies except he has a vision of his dad blowing his head off but just shows the wall splatter, but hese already dead before the movie starts & his mother at the end but she died of lung cancer, he dosent even really get hurt although he gets fakly attacked several times. the end of the movie will possibly make you throw up its so bad, they try to monolague the rest of his life that ends making him look even more pathetic than he was throught the movie, which is a lot more trust me or watch for your self. i have no idea how this got an r rating due to no severed parts, light swearing, no nudity, & the only part that i could say is his dad blows his head off but ive sceen worst in pg-13. they must have begged to get the ratting because i wont watch those sad pathetic pg-13's unless just cause. im not sure what the rest of you saw giving this 4 & 5 stars. yall must love the cry wolf & all the pg-13 horror garbage, so if thats your style this movis is ripe for your picking.

  3. Its kind off like Stephen king meets Twilight Zone. Dont get me wrong both are brilliant but i appreciate King as more of an "Epic" 3 hour mini-series kind of storyteller and not the hitchcock short story kind of guy.

It really feels like you have just watched a short story from Twilight zone at the end of the day. The character development and storyline is just too limited to be worth the 2 hours.

If it was one of 3 stories on a ("twilight zone like") compilation and only an hour or so in length, it would have been 5 stars!

If you want an epic tale by King (like Rose Red, Storm of the centuary, the Shining) rather look for something else because this will dissapoint you.

    (Please forgive me Mr. King)

  4. Once again Mick Garris is at the helm of another Stephen King adaptation. Garris has made many King movies(if it's a mini series or tv movie, you can bet it was most likely Garris), and while his contributions aren't as memorable as efforts by other directors, Garris tries his damndest to stick as close to the source material as possible. Plus he is one of the most active and dedicated individuals in the horror scene, and for that I respect him quite a bit. But I can't honestly say he made a great movie here. Not bad, but nothing worth a second viewing. Much more plot has been added to the story in order to fill out the 90+ minute running time. A story like this(which if I recall was around 50 pages, give or take) should have been done as one of Garris' Masters Of Horror episodes rather than a full length movie. But when Garris is on, he's on. Alot of the dialogue is straight from the story. A big problem with this movie is Garris' repeated use of the daydream gimmick. You know those scenes in film when something happens to a character(usually horrific and outrageous), then the scene quickly flashes back to the character before the horrific event and you realize that it was all in the character's imagination? This movie is full of these. In fact, it may actually have set a record for uses of this movie trick. It seems to happen at least once every two minutes and quickly becomes silly and then downright annoying. Plus we add a bunch of hallucinations and the main character continuously talking to himself(two of the same actor onscreen at once) and it dulls the suspense and seems like a desperate attempt at being flashy. Plus, the film takes place in 1969, but every now and then we get a blast of very modern sounding music. Personally I can't stand anachronistic music in a film that's supposed to be taking place in a different time period. But even with all of my yapping and whining, Garris managed to pull off another passably entertaining and fairly accurate King adaptation. Just not a terrible memorable one.

  5. I've never seen a horror movie with a plot like this before. It's absolutely original. The first half of the movie is engaging. Some frightening and suspenseful scenes happened while he's walking on the street at night. For example, the moment when he was chased into a car cemetery by two strangers.
The second half is boring and repetitive. The worst thing is it turned out they all came from his own imagination!

    It's worth watching once.

  1. We, too, never had any trouble bypassing the menu. This is another great creation by Disney. For any kids and parents who adore Playhouse Disney, this is the DVD for you, just sweet Halloween cheer. We would rate it a 10 if we could. It is one of our favorites!!!

  2. This is the second year that we have pulled out this seasonal DVD and my son enjoys them now just as much as he did last year. The reason I started warehousing seasonal DVDs was because of the level of frustration I have with this menu. First of all there is a verbose and utterly unnecessary narration about how to use the menu. Once you get past it or hit MENU on your remote to shut the guy up then the play all function from the main menu doesn't even work. You can then go into a sub menu for each show. Just in case you didn't catch in the first time there is yet another explanation of how to use the menu. When I press MENU at this point I am removed from the all menus and have to start over. I can take it for a few weeks a year but it's going back into storage as soon as the jack-o-lanterns hit the trash can. I have to give this DVD a one just based on the poor menu design.

  4. My kids saw these shows when they were first aired on Disney and I videotaped them back then. Now that we don't even own a VCR anymore, I was excited to see them on DVD.

Kids are 7 and 5 and they still love to watch these shows. They don't ever remember seeing them since it was a few years back when they had it on video, but they love this DVD!

  5. I highly recommend all the episodes from the Rolie Polie world created by children's author William Joyce along with Walt Disney, has been a wonderful feature for children. The clinky clanky robot world is fun, with good morals, and non-violent stories. This tape has 3 different Olie stories and in the first "The Legend of Spookie Ookie." Pappy tricks Zowie and Olie by appearing as the orange Spookie Ookie", a halloween character. But does the real Spookie Ookie arrive? In the 2nd episode "Oooh Scary," Olie and his pal Billy create a fun house to scare the younger kids, but they are the ones that get spooked. The third story is "Zowie Queen of the Pumpkins", whre Zowie meets spok-o-lanterns in the pumpkin patch at midnight.
Next we have Halloween episodes from "The Book of Pooh", and one from the show, "Out of the Box". Also an instructional feature from Disney on carving a jack-O-lantern, and another on making Halloween decorations from everyday items.
