  1. I loved this movie. If you're a fan of Thrillers like The Great Escape and Escape from Alcatraz, then you should buy this. It is so sad to see what people actually went through and in the end you heave a sigh of relief and feel a lot of joy to finally see how they escaped. In today's world, given the same situation, we would not survive even for a day; but those men and women had guts and hunger for survival and revenge. This is a "must see" movie. Be prepared for occasional "lumps in your throat".

  2. although this movie is not a thrill a minute movie, it is very startly to see the reality of what really happened under Hilters regime.

  3. This is a great story and almost nothing else matters. The quality is OK at best and this must of been a very low budget film - again this doesn't mater because the object lesson is so great. It make you realize that today we are just a bunch of spoiled brats when you look at what real hardship can be.

  4. Although some of the film making techniques feel a little dated (it was made in 1987 for TV), the acting is superb, the production values are high, and, above all, from what I have read in several books on the Holocaust, the death camps, and Sobibor, this movie does its best to be historically accurate. In the first half, it gives the viewer just enough of an understanding of what took place in the death camps without being too emotionally overwhelming too watch (although my wife might disagree.) The second half also contains a bit of Nazi brutality, but the focus is on the planning and execution of the escape. This to me was quite gripping. I recommend it.

  5. No doubt the facts behind this film are gruesome but the movie does do an excellent job of informing the viewer of the events at the Sobibor extermination camp during WWII and the bold and brave escape of its prisoners. Well worth watching. Also, look up Thomas (Toivi) Blatt's Sobibor book. He is a Sobibor survivor from that camp who successfully escaped and the book is an excellent account as well.

5 comments about VeggieTales - An Easter Carol.
  1. There's no cute intro by Bob and Larry, nor is there a Silly Song. My 2-1/2 yo old, who normally LOVES Veggie Tales, was bored silly and has never managed to sit through the whole video nor has she requested it. I've played it 2 or 3 times, despite some reservations, because, well, I paid for the darn thing! Might as well get some use out of it. But, my daughter couldn't care less.

But what really disappointed me was the story line. The story is all about saving a church building from being torn down, because, apparently without the BUILDING there would be no church or Christians left and the city would be a dreary immoral place. The idea of faith in Christ being inextricably intertwined with the BUILDING horrified me. The church is the body of believers and whether they meet together at a home, a high school gym or in a typical church building doesn't matter.

  2. I really enjoyed the story of Easter Carol and the Easter egg factory. I love they way veggietales brings back the real meaning of the season.

  3. Easter CArol is basically the story of Dicken's classic Christmas Carol, but adapted beautifully for Easter. The highlight of the show is the tear-jerking ballad sung by angelic "Hope" to a backdrop of stained glass pictorials of Jesus's life from birth to death to resurrection. I still cry every time I watch the tender scene.

My only complaint is the rather awkward emphasis by the Veggie-version of Marley's ghost--Grandma Nezzer--who makes a big point of saying that she is not a ghost, but a vision, then explaining how a vision is different. "Hope", the Veggie-version of all three ghosts of Christmas, also explains that she is not a ghost, but the "Hope" of Easter. It throws off the rhythm of the humor and story, and overall, seems more confusing to kids. I understand if some Christian denominations don't like the idea of ghosts--but it IS a fictional story; afterall, there's also no such thing as talking vegetables.

Overall, worth investing in. My toddlers had a great understanding of Easter after watching this several times in the weeks before Lent.

  4. This video is fun. It brings back "Mr. Nezzer" and this time, there is an Easter Egg/Easter Bunny factory.

My reason for giving it only 4 stars is that the song distorts the Bible verse from "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life" to "the way, the truth, and the LIGHT" -- better for the rhymes, but it's not what Jesus said. So I find myself in the position, each time we watch it, of hitting "mute" for that line and singing it the right way. Slightly annoying. But the kids love the show, so I have to recommend it, despite that one flaw.

  5. My 8 month old loves loves loves the Veggie Tales Easter Carol. He doesn't care much for Baby Einstein but he loves Veggie Tales and laughs and squirms with delight when they sing. I would definitely recommend this.

  1. Attactive animation and the use of the voices of regular kids does not justify targeting the youngest of audiences with junk like this. The parent bunnies appear briefly in this and set the correct example, but the rest is nightmare. Our toddler even cried which watching the second unexpected round of violence.

  1. Words are not able to fully describe what your eyes will see.
Can never, ever, be remade even with an unlimited budget.
    Fred is Priceless.

  2. In this joyous musical romp, MGM producer Arthur Freed paired Garland with the recently "retired" Astaire after original lead Gene Kelly injured his ankle. Combining Astaire's moves and Garland's pipes with a phenomenal Irving Berlin score adapted by Johnny Green and Roger Edens, highlights include the vaudevillian duet "We're a Couple of Swells" and Astaire's excellent solo to "Steppin' Out With My Baby". The movie was a big success in 1948, and no wonder! By all means, step out with this title.

  3. Taking into account you are going to see 17 Irving Berlin's tunes, plus the first-rate cast Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, you may even forget the plot.

    An unforgettable musical.

  4. When Don Hewes dance partner Nadine Hale (Ann Miller) abandons their act, he sets out to find a new partner. He discovers Hannah Brown (Judy Garland, in one of her favorite roles). This movie was originally intended to star Gene Kelly as Don Hewes and Cyd Charisse as Nadine Hale. But Gene Kelly broke his ankle and Cyd tore a muscle so Fred and Ann stepped in. (I really like this movie, but I think it would have been better with Cyd and Gene.)
There is a little confusion as Don loves Nadine, Nadine loves Johnny (Peter Lawford as Don's best friend), Johnny loves Hannah, and Hannah loves Don. But in the end all works out well!
Judy sings some wonderful Irving Berling songs: Easter Parade, It Only Happens When I Dance With You, I Wish I Was In Michigan, Better Luck Next Time and I Love a Piano. This DVD also includes the deleted song "Mr. Monotony" in which she wears the tuxedo top she later wore for her famous "Get Happy" number in Summer Stock.

  5. Easter Parade, the movie, is a classic that those with dementia will enjoy especially during the Easter season. Folks with dementia feel a special connection to the classic musicals. The songs are familiar to them. They often will sing along. The music uplifts them. The dancing and the drama are exciting. This movie will put a dementia person in the Easter spirit. Buy them a new Easter bonnet to complete the experience. Watch this movie with someone you love whether they have dementia or not for a terrific Easter day.
