  1. My Holiday season is not complete without Conniff's outstanding renditions of all my favorite holiday music. In my book, there is none better.

  2. This Album and with the "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" Album (many songs are on both) are the two I grew up with listening to in front of our giant old stereo, when these were on 33 LP records. I couldn't believe when I spotted the 'girl in the Santa Mini-Skirt' in the Christmas CD section and like so many others, instantly recognized the album from when I was just a kid. I both both albums a few years ago on CD and listen to them every year. Amazing the memories the songs bring back, it's not today's music, but why should it be? :D

  3. Not that a 'best of' is a bad thing, but you do miss out on some outstanding Christmas music if this is all you buy. And if you buy the other three (Here We Come A-Caroling, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and Christmas with Conniff) you don't need this compilation. All of the songs on this CD are from those 3 original releases from the late 50's and early to mid 60's.

For me, Ray Conniff all but defined Christmas music in our house when I was growing up. We had one of those record players where you stack up the records and the play one after the other. The mix was made up of Ray Conniff, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Christmas with Chet Atkins (if you don't have Chet Atkins's Christmas CD... check it out..)

Depending on how much Ray Conniff Singers you want, either buy this, or skip it and buy the other three.

4 stars because I think the original 3 are a better choice. The music itself is 5+ stars

  4. Where would Christmas be without the Ray Conniff singers? Indeed, this is nostalgia at its best. For many listeners who grew up in the '60s and '70s, Ray Conniff was a fixture in the family record bin -- don't you love those album covers? RAY CONNIFF: CHRISTMAS CAROLING was part of the collection, and listeners who remember other similar records may have had Ray Conniff sandwiched in between the Mitch Miller and Henry Mancini records. Who could resist singing along with the uniformed girl and guy singers interchanging particular parts of classic Christmas carols, such as "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "O Tannebaum," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," to popular holiday favorites, "Frosty The Snowman," "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Jingle Bells," "Sleigh Ride," with great delight and foxtrot precision.

CHRISTMAS CAROLING should be a part of every Christmas record collection. For listeners who cannot resist singing along to Christmas gems, this is the perfect record to play and share with others regardless if you grew up listening to your parent's cassette or lp version of this cd. Ray Conniff's version of these Christmas favorites will entice that quirky holiday spirit.

  5. Great songs. Brings back alot of good memories. They don't sing like this anymore! Great tape, can listen to it for hours!

  1. My 8 year old daughter absolutely loves this tape. I bought it for her several years ago, and she likes to listen to it when she goes to bed. I think she likes all of the upbeat and positive songs on it and it gives her nice things to think about as she is going to sleep. This is a great tape for kids that is enjoyable for the parents also.

  2. We have 3 Jessica Harper albums, and this is the best. It's more varied and has lots of great, infectious melodies with exceptionally clever lyrics. If you're wondering which one to get, start with this one.

  3. Our 17 month old daughter loves to dance to this CD. Jessica has a beautiful voice, and the lyrics are clever and adorable. Our whole family loves this.

  4. This CD is wonderful. Jessica Harper has a fantastic sound that everyone in the car will enjoy.

  5. All of Jessica Harper's albums are wonderful. Catchy, funny, easy to sing, and musically rich enough for an adult. This album is the best, I feel. My daughter and I sing "I saw some wings from the angel store" all the time. So many phrases from these songs become catch-phrases around our house and the root for lots of humor and fun. Ms. Harper has a wonderful, rich alto voice which is fun to sing with and there are lots of harmonies in all the songs. In fact, listening to these albums helped refine my musical ear with regard to harmony and made it easier for me to sing in the church choir. This is music you will love and your kids will love.

5 comments about Let It Snow.
  1. Chanticleer is an a capella ensemble that has gained popularity in the mid 1990's due to it's beautiful and at times haunting sound and a renewed public interest in early classical music. Their previous releases at Christmas have been well received by loyal fans with good reason--they are fine recordings of beautiful music. My guess is that their most recent collection LET IT SNOW may not be as well received by Chanticleer's fans as their earlier recordings.

To be fair, their musicianship is consistent on this recording as it is in their past ventures. Some of the tracks are worth hearing: traditional favorites such as "Ave Maria" "Silent Night" "O Come All Ye Faithful and "O Holy Night." The foray into more contemporary Christmas songs such as "Let it Snow," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" is fine even though some Chanticleer purists may disagree. For me the arrangements of medleys, one of "God Rest ye Merry, Gentlemen" and Feliz Navidad" the other being one called "Holiday Cheer" are troublesome. The first medley not only pairs two songs that do not belong together, it drags. The second sounds a bit too gimmicky, at least for my taste. I'm not saying that groups cannot have fun with Christmas music. Many Christmas songs are supposed to be nothing but fun, but the fun has to work, and in the case of the second medley, it just doesn't work.

Now don't get me wrong. It's not a horrible recording and if you take out about ten minutes of this CD, you'd have a nearly perfect recording. This collection does not deserve a home with Elmo and Patsy's Christmas collection that gave us the immortal "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" and "Percy the Puny Poinsettia" or the Wilson Phillips HEY SANTA. Most of the tracks are performed well; it's just not in the same category as Chanticleer's other holiday offerings.

  2. Beautifully done, mostly very slow, peaceful interpretations of the various songs -- speeds up a bit toward the end. The characterization elsewhere as background music is very apt -- something to play during a relaxed Christmas dinner -- or when relaxing in front of a warm fire on a cold day. Ave Maria is roughly half orchestral and half vocal. Beautiful voices and harmony -- the tenors are truly amazing -- I thought I could hit some high notes.

  3. As a Chanticleer fan, I must say that this is a really bad CD. The arrangements lack interest, the Chanticleer Orchestra (with a group known for their a cappella work) is overpowering and uninspired. I knew this was mostly "popular" music when I bought the CD; I wouldn't have guessed that it would be poorly done. As an owner of all their other Christmas CDs, I can see that I will now have to be a much more careful consumer of their work. It even makes me worry about spending money to attend one of their concerts (which I have done in the past); now I would definitely want to know exactly what was going to be on the program (and make sure they weren't traveling with that dreadful instrumental ensemble).

  4. Like others, I was disappointed in this latest Christmas CD from Chanticleer. Frankly, I really do not care at all for any of the accompanied numbers, with the exception of "Ave Maria" - probably because it has the most traditional, least "jazzy" sound to it (I'm not a big fan of their "Lost in the Stars" CD either). Still, it is Chanticleer, and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" is absolutely beautiful - the one track I can listen to over and over.

  5. I like Chanticleer's music and the harmonies their voices produce. This particular Christmas CD was not very exciting and I listened to it only once and put it away. I actually wished I didn't buy it. Next time, I'll be sure to listen to their songs first to be sure I like them and not simply assume that everything Chanticleer does will be pleasing.

5 comments about Vaughan Williams - Serenade to Music · Five Mystical Songs · Fantasia on Christmas Carols · Flos Campi / Sixtieen Soloists · Thomas Allen · Nobuko Imai · Corydon Singers · ECO · Matthew Best.
  1. Of this collection, only the "Five Mystical Songs" will be familiar to most listeners. It is a treat to discover the remaining works all available in one package, and especially good to hear them.

"Serenade to Music" (with words by Shakespeare) is quintessential Vaughan Williams: a beautifully crafted piece echoing the height of Romanticism, with a unique and fascinating story behind it. The work was written for a Promenade Concert - more specifically, it was written for sixteen solo singers, who are identified by name in the published score and were amongst the best of their time. Not only was the piece a triumph for them at the concert, it also caught the attention of the composer Rachmaninov, who was moved to tears by the music. The piece is rarely performed because of the fact that it was specially composed for the first performers; as stated in the notes for this recording, it only works if the performers are of as high a standard as the originals. Hence, the "cast" of this CD includes some celebrated names from the world of vocal music: John Mark Ainsley, Thomas Allen, Maldwyn Davies, Anne Dawson, Martyn Hill, Diana Montague, Alan Opie and Jean Rigby are particular standouts. Their rendition is spell-binding and rivetting, although I find that there are moments when their more operatic traits get the better of them and ruin the tuning and clarity of melodic and harmonic details. I don't mean to say that it is a bad recording, but I have heard better ones (Sir Adrian Boult's will probably remain untouchable for a long time to come). Still, a pleasure to hear, and extremely moving - it's not hard to see why Rachmaninov was so deeply affected by the piece.

Thomas Allen also serves as baritone soloist for the "Five Mystical Songs" and the rarer "Fantasia on Christmas Carols." As a choral singer, I have had the pleasure of performing these works myself, and this recording conveys them as stirringly as I remember them. In the former work, the bulk of the music is carried by the baritone; the chorus comes into its own for the final movement, "Let all the world in every corner sing" but is otherwise a background force. In the latter work, based on carol tunes collected and arranged by Vaughan Williams as part of his work as editor of the English Hymnal and Oxford Book of Carols, the music is shared more substantially by soloist and chorus. These performances give the music a wonderful 'glow,' just as they ought to have. In the case of the "Fantasia," it's well worth saving that track until Christmas...

The last work on the disc is "Flos Campi," in which Vaughan Williams breaks with many tonal conventions in a stunning display of orchestration, filled with achingly beautiful melodic twists and lucious harmonies, hinting very strongly at the erotic. Nobuko Imai provides a characteristic viola solo, whilst the chorus is confined to textless vocalisation. The effect is pondered in much detail in the programme notes; suffice it to say, it is a work that will leave itself etched on the mind as one of the most haunting and mysterious ever written.

Throughout this recording, the English Chamber Orchestra plays to perfection with Matthew Best at the helm. His Corydon Singers prove their considerable strength as a choral group with effortless control. This is a wonderful document - whatever the season.

  2. The best thing about this recording is the composite selection of this music on a single disc. The Corydon Singers, and particularly Thomas Allen (he of legendary career!) are quite fine, though quirkily I prefer John Shirley-Quirk's version of 'Five Mystical Songs' with Kings College Choir, especially his 'Love Bade Me Welcome' with its magnificent rendering of the last words "and I did sit and eat", which once heard will never forsake your memory. The spare yet intensely textured sound of the Corydon Singers is best suited to the diaphanous 'Serenade to Music'. Vaughan Williams' ability to set a text like no one else is a perfect partner to Shakespeare's arching mastery of the English language! It's a superb piece basically ignored in this country, as are most of VW's symphonies except for the ubiquitous No. 2. When have you heard an American orchestra perform the inventive Eighth or the redemptive Fifth? I agree that Boult's recordings of VW's music are a fine standard, &his 'Serenade' is especially fine, but this recording flourishes. Matthew Best gives space and reason to the beautiful ambience of the score. Flos Campi is well done here with Nobuko Imai's viola playing free of affectation as always, displaying an unpretentious mastery of the score. The 'Fantasia' (one of VW's favorite musical motives, even when not properly so called!) demonstrates Vaughan Williams' true veneration of the English hymn tune, a fetching gift that annointed all of us throughout his composing career, and perhaps more than anything secured for him a place in the pantheon of great composers. This is a successful disc of masterworks of an often misunderstood and certainly under-performed composer. The English Chamber Orchestra enjoys one subtle triumph after another in this recording - the strings are beautifully recorded, as is the singing. If it had been designed as a 2-disc effort and included 'Benedictus', the 'Mass in G', 'Sancta Civitas', and 'The Lark Ascending', we'd have close to a set of VW's essential choral and smaller orchestral works in one package!

  3. English society was still so secure in the imperial twilight (1910-40) that native composers could afford to ignore the revolution mounted by Schonberg, Webern, Berg, and Stravinsky, not to mention lesser modernists. Vaughan Williams is too lovable a compser to criticize for being a musical reactionary, and here we get some of his most endearing works for solo voices and chorus. The intent behind this Serenade to Music was to duplicate, as much as possible, the 16 stellar soloists for whome V-W wrote the work. That was already done, in truth, by Leonard Bernstien at the opening of Philharmonic Hall in 1962 with the likes of Jon Vickers, George London, Richard Tucker, and Eileen Farrell, to thrilling effect. Best's reading is quite low-key, mellifluous, and gentle by comparison.

His one world-class singer is Thomas Allen, who appears to splendid effect in V-W's haunting Five Mystical Songs to texts by George Herbert, which he sets as wonderfully as he set Shakespeare in the Serenade. The Corydon Singers have nothing to do in the Serenade but are vigorous and expert in the rest of the program, which includes the 12-min. Fantasia on Christmas Carols, again with Thomas Allen in great form, and Flos Campi with Nobuko Imai as the expressive viola soloist. The Christmas carols mostly sound serious and religious, in keeping with the Five Mystical Songs.

In all, Allen is the star here; the works themselves are essential V-W, each a small masterpiece that deserves to be better known in the U.S. Four staars for the Serenade, five for Allen's work.

  4. How sweet the singers weave in and out of Serenade to Music! In line after line, Vaughan Williams amazingly goes from low register to high climax in short spans and phrases. 'How many things by season seasoned are' is a hair raising vocal line, while the pianissimos on 'harmony' are pure musical genius, and stunningly performed by the soloist. This is great composing given a definitive performance. I enjoy the other pieces on this recording, but I must confess that Flos Campi goes over my head like a low flying plane, and I just don't get it. But you must not go through life without listening to the Serenade - it ranks with his Lark Ascending and Tallis Fantasia for sheer beauty.

  5. I only listened to the Fantasia on Christmas Carols in depth at this moment in time. Sir Thomas Allen is superb in his interpretation of this choral masterpiece. He lives up to his reputation as one of the great British baritones of all times. He is able to express the baritone solo with superb musicianship and nuance. This is a challenging piece for choruses. It demands a level of musicianship which should not be attempted by amateur choirs. The choir is also superb and follows the composers dynamics respectively. I highly recommend the CD if you are only interested in this work. It's worth it.

    Tim Kennedy

  1. This collection by the Manhattan Transfer is one of the greatest collections of swinging Christmas music ever produced. The group never sounded better and the music is listenable all year long. Pop it in the CD during one of summer's "dog days" and you're instantly transported to a better place and time. When they first came out I gave them as gifts to family and friends and the reaction was unanimous: in a word, Outstanding!!

  2. I bought this CD when it was first released back in 1992. I thought it was one of the best Christmas albums then, and I think it still is today. Actually, this is a collection of Christmas songs, with two exceptions--more about those in a minute. The Christmas songs go from solemn to swinging--with the Transfer's voices, either singly or blended (as they do so well) performing flawlessly, buoyed by Johnny Mandel's meticulous arrangements. As great as the Christmas songs are, though, the best two tunes on the album are the "non-Christmas" songs. "Snowfall," the simple, yet delightful Claude Thornhill compostiion, is one of my favorite tunes of the swing era. By its name, it has tended to become associated with the Christmas season, but it's not really a Christmas song and is a great tune anytime. The ManTran do a superb cover of it here, and Mandel's arrangement is stellar. The other tune is "Goodnight," an almost forgotten lullaby composed by Paul McCartney and recorded on the Beatles' "White Cover" album. Quite frankly, it WAS pretty forgettable as the Beatles recorded it, but the ManTran turn it into a work of vocal art here. The childs' voices (children of the Manhattan Transfer members) are a little distracting at the end of the tune, but, hey, they are the performers' kids and it IS Christmastime.

Over the years, there have been some abysmal recordings released of Christmas songs. This is definitely NOT one of those. Back in '92, the Manhattan Transfer got it right, and it's still one of the best albums of Christmas music that you can find. Even my "non-jazz-loving" friends love this album.

  3. I've given this beautiful Christmas music CD to family and friends. It's always amazing and thrilling to listen to "Manhattan Transfer" harmonize as only they can.

  4. I heard "Snowfall" on the radio, knew it was Manhattan Transfer, and that's all it took for me! Put on the song, and your mind will drift to winter, no matter what time of year it is. A good collection of music. Their harmonies are as clear and crisp as ever. Good job. Five stars!!

  5. Make your Christmas season a little warmer and brighter with this wonderful album. If you are not familiar with this exceptional group, here is your chance to place a large holiday smile on your face and become a fan. Simply an amazing Christmas treat.

1 comments about 20th Century English Ballets.
  1. 20th Century English Ballets" is a sonic delight, with quite spectacular sound. The Northern Ballet Theatre Orchestra is an excellent group, as those who have bought the Naxos recording of Philip Feeney's "Dracula" ballet music have found out. The atmosphere is quite different here, because the stories are different.

Feeney has written some lively and characterful music for his version of the Cinderella story, which takes about 30 minutes. I would say it is the best of the three works, being marginally better than the Muldowney. The story has its sad moments when Cindy can't go to the ball, but this nothing as dark as in Dracula! Feeney has written a wonderful score with many magical moments, and also some spectacular ones. This is really fine music.

The Rev. Patrick Brontë had six daughters, three of whom became writers: Anne, Emily and Charlotte. This ballet is about their lives and loves from childhood on, and Dominic Muldowney has written an imaginative score. We see "Wuthering Heights" growing in Emily's imagination; Charlotte's infatuation with her teacher in Brussels; her short marriage, ending with her death; and finally, the father, Patrick, in his old age, who outlived all his daughters. This is very well-done theatre music.

Carl Davis composed ballet music to illustrate Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." And so we see Bob Cratchit; the young Scrooge and his fiancé, Belle, who realized Scrooge loved money; Jacob Marley and the ghosts; and Scrooge's conversion to the Christmas spirit. His score is also well done for what seems to be a children's ballet, often incorporating material from well-known Christmas carols.

I enjoy this disc, especially the Feeney and the Muldowney works, which are very good. The Davis is colorful, with good arrangements of the arrangements of the Christmas carols, but is not very original.

  1. If you want to give someone the perfect gift this year, choose Jaci Velasquez Christmas! Even though this came out a long time ago, I still listen to it all winter!

You'll love "O come, O come, Emmanuel". It sounds really cool. You'll also burst out laughing every time you listen to "The Chipmunk Song", where the chipmunks try to speak Spanish. You'll also enjoy "Season of Love", which is my second favourite song on the CD. But the best song on the entire CD has to be her version of "Felis Navidad". I highly recommend this CD to everyone!

  2. I have been a fan for Jaci Velasquez for the past eight years and enjoy hearing her voice in both languages. I do not speak Spanish but enjoy her artistic abilities none the less. This album lived up to the Velasquez name in my book- My family and I only really enjoy the traditional sounding Christmas carols and tend to not enjoy the revised versions. Jaci's album not only made sure the carols were sung traditionally but she has given us a gift a couple new songs that will be added to my Christmas traditions! Overall I LOVE this album and the only reason I did not give it a full five stars was that I am done with that Chipmunk Song. Sorry everybody.

  3. jaci, as stated in a personal interview, was trying to capture the 'big band' sound of classical christmas greats like bing crosby and andy williams. in my estimation, she succeeded, and then some.

her vocals are full of richness and depth, her musical backgrounds ring with christmas cheer, and her involvement of the chipmunks inspired.

i highly recommend this christmas album to anyone who loves good christmas music.

  4. When I ordered for the first time on [...] I did'nt know what to expect. When I received my Christmas CD it was in excellent condition, the wrapping was not broken and there were no physical or internal damages to the CD or cover itself. I was very well pleased and will continue to order thru [...]. Thanks Amazon!

  5. This is the best Christmas CD I have ever heard. She does wonderful at presenting the "clasiscs" and introducing some new and exciting twists for Christmas. I listen to it all year round and sometimes take baths to it. I highly recommend this CD!

4 comments about Mendelssohn: Complete Piano Music.
  1. For the price, you really can't find a real deal... but in a lot of places, it's obvious why the price is as low as it is. First of all, the recording is awfully muddy and the piano's tone suffers as a result, often sounding more like it's underwater than anything else.

The second thing is that the pianist makes a fair amount of mistakes in the music he is playing, some of them often grating, something that is unacceptable in a studio recording. But I'm still giving it a middle-of-the-road score because the performances aside from the mistakes are often quite good.

  2. Mendelssohn's piano music is an amazing body of work and if you are a classical music fan who has not been exposed to it yet, this is a wonderful way to get his entire piano output. Nimbus has Marvin Jones( winner of the 1968 Myra Hess Award ) performing this for us, recorded in the 1970's. It is in ADD, which is what one would expect from that time, but the sound is very crisp and clear, with the microphone placement not extremely close to the piano, so as to capture the room acoustics. Mr. Jones plays with great brilliance, clarity, and enthusiasm, and, most importantly, he seems to capture the true spirit of Mendelssohn. The set is nicely packaged in two triple cases in a sleeve with a booklet.

  3. This is no doubt to me great piano music played by a great performer. I can't find anything wrong with that. The only problem is the recording quality is very poor, almost intolerable at times. This was recorded in the early through late 70s. I disagree with the previous reviewer, the sound isn't crisp or clear at all, it's very staticy and recorded at a very low volume so you have to crank up the volume creating more static. It's also hard to hear how beautiful the piano really is. To confirm what one of the other reviewers said it does sound as if the piano is underwater. Too bad the recording was not cleaned up to sound at least a little better.

Even at the price I paid ($25)it still may be over priced. It is a great way to get all of his solo piano music but if you want quality skip this and spend the extra money.

  4. This is an amazing collection of Mendelssohn's works! However, the recording is a little on the soft side, so you sort of need to crank your speakers, but all in all, it's a must have for collectors of classical music. Enjoy! Oh, and may I strongly suggest track 3 of disc 4 - it was my whole reason for buying this collection. The entire set is amazing, but that track is worth the price of admission.

5 comments about Carnival Christmas EP.
  1. The worst of ICP I'd say. It's rare though, so it's straight. Annoying in a way, but good for the x-mas season. Only for Juggalo's.

  2. This single is short but sweet. Its usually cheap too, so I say its worth the price. Now, I know these tracks are already featured on Forgotten Freshness volumes 1 & 2, and the original Carnival X-Mas ep, but if your a collector, which you problably are since your reading this, you will want this in your collection. I would recommend the original but it isn't very easy to find these days since its basically out of print but you can catch them on the webstore(if your lucky).
'Santa's A Fat Bxtch' is the bomb diggity, a humorous track but a classic. When I say classic, I mean old school "I remember those days..." classic. It serves as a good song to sing when you and your homies are bored or whatever.
'Red Christmas' is the last track and is fatter then your mother. Hehe just playing. This song is phat though, its a good track but nothing outstanding.
My words of advice are to buy this or get buyed. Foe real.

    Bry-Bry
    (Gangsta-Style)

  3. These are two really good christmas songs by ICP. The songs themselves would both earn 5 stars but its really pointless to buy this when both of them are on Forgotten Freshness 1+2. But if you have the extra money it'd be cool to show it off I guess.

  4. The title says it all. If you're a Juggalo/Lette and you don't own this... then get it MCL!!!

  5. This 2 track EP was first released in 1994 with 2 extra tracks. But for one reason or another, the EP was taken off shelves, and later re-released in 1997, minus 2 tracks. This album is a perfect Juggalo Christmas gift. The atmosphere in the songs really get you in the Christmas spirit. The weird thing is, I only tend to really like these songs around December, any other time of the year I usually never pay them no mind.

But regardless of what I may think of it now, it's still pretty fresh, Violent J and 2 Dope spit wicked Christmas "carols" so to say. J's storytelling here is great, and 2 Dope's singing ("Red Christmas' chorus) and rapping live up to J's storytelling in my opinion. The lyrics get a B+ from me.

The production is pretty good as well, courtesy of Mike Clark and I.C.P., but like I said, I tend to get into it more during the Christmas season, any other time of the year the Christmas beats doesn't cut it for me. Thus 3 stars. The production gets a B from me as of now.

    Here's my track-by-track ratings.

    01. "Santa's A Fat Bxtch" (B+)
    02. "Red Christmas" (B+) (my favorite)

I recommend this to all Juggalos but only during the Christmas season. Sure, both of these songs are on the "Forgotten Freshness, Vols. 1 & 2" compilation, but this is still worth the money just out of the Christmas spirit. This also makes a great gift for the Juggalos. Peace.
