  1. This is traditional Christmas music, beautifully played. It is very nice for background music for decorating the tree, having dinner, or whatever.

  1. One of the best vintage collections ever. If you are from this era it will bring back great memories...if you aren't, it will make new ones and be a real conversation piece at your holiday parties. Highly recommend.

  2. This is a wonderful collection that leaves you wanting more. I'm in my mid-40s & have enjoyed the music of the 30s & 40s for as long as I can remember. You don't have to be from the Greatest Generation(anyone that lived through The Depression & WW2)to appreciate these holiday hits. So many great bands are on here, such as Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Kaye Kayser, Les Brown, etc. and all do a terrific job in making merry music for your Christmas celebrations. If only there were a 2nd volume to add to this. Very highly recommended.

  3. This is a good album, though not a classic. Especially fun are "Hello, Mr. Kringle" that ought to get a chuckle out of anyone, and "Waht are You Doing New Year's Eve?" The other songs are alright.

  1. My Mom recently bought me, my sister, and herself a copy of this CD. (Sorry to say she paid ALOT more through a mail order catalog)

My favorite Christmas memories are of listening to Buck Owens while my family put the Christmas Tree!

I think the reason this album stands the test of time is because nearly every song was original. Which is very rare in a Christmas album!

I love EVERY song on this album, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be a toss up between "Santa's Gonna Come In A Stagecoach" and "Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy"

THANK YOU Buck Owens for all the wonderful memories!

  2. This is my all time favorite Christmas album...Alabama Christmas, and Jim Reeves Christmas album are up there too...
Buck's style is perfect for Christmas time, the original song writing is great. I actually am not a very big Buck Owens music fan outside of this Christmas album.
Bottom line.....the guitar players are AWESOME!!
My favorite song is Jingle Bells, but they are all great songs and hold many great memories from my childhood.
    Must Buy!!!!!

  3. I love this CD! The twangy guitars and out front pedal steel work by Tom Brumley are spine chilling (for me anyway). Some people don't care for this sort of music though, so I've heard. "Santa Looked Alot Like Daddy" is a fun & clever song worth the whole CD (more recently recorded by Garth Brooks, but this original version is better in my opinion). If you like Buck Owens music, you'll love this one.

  4. My parents used to listen to this when I was a kid. It brings back memories of old Country Christmas music.

  5. This item was purchased as a gift but I know the person is extremely happy with this selection. She is 84 years old and has been looking for this item for a few years. She had even met Buck Owens when she was younger.

  1. Those of us who grew up in the '50s and '60s can't help but have a certain nostalgia for Burl Ives, and it's almost impossible to avoid associating him with the Christmas season. We all remember him from Captain Kangaroo and numerous other TV appearances. And of course, we were a generation who would recognize his voice and the somewhat caricatured appearance of his actual person that was narrator Sam the Snowman in the 1964 Christmas classic RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED-REINDEER. (And although that TV special has become something of a perennial favorite, I can't imagine today's tykes associating Sam with an actual person, as delightful as they may find him here).

Four years after that celebrated special, Ives released this Christas album, which fans will certainly find charming, but which may have to be presented with a few caveats for more casual listeners. First off, his most celebrated Christmas song (from RUDOLPH) "Holly, Jolly Christmas" is NOT included here. Scan through the Amazon listings, and you will find it elsewhere, of course. But this is not the place.

Secondly, his readings of some of the standard carols are literally that: READINGS. Well, actually, he tends to talk-sing the first verse of "Silent Night," "Little Town of Bethlehem" and "O Holy Night" and then lifts his light tenor voice into song for the subsequent verses. It's actually an interesting approach, and may have had something to do with Ives' aging singing voice. (He was in his 60s at the time.) Whatever the cause, his talk singing had an interesting effect on this listener. I found myself paying closer attention to the lyrics of these versions than I do with most treatments of the classic carols.

Listeners may legitimately expect their share of warm, folksy moments from the affably avuncular Ives. There are some here, such as "Santa Mouse," which could have become a CAPTAIN KANGAROO standard (and maybe did, but by '68, I was no longer watching). "Happy Birthday, Jesus" is another sweet natured "family" oriented track that should charm fans. And the sixty-something Ives pulls out a recitation he once performed as a child of four called "Oh, What A Lucky Boy Am I," which once again shows his deft skill with the spoken word.

Yes, it's all just a bit sweetly corny. You want Ives with a little edge? Rent the DVD of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF and leave me alone. This time of the year, I'll take my Ives with a little Currier...

  2. This CD was everything and more than I had hoped for. It brought back great memories of Christmas with my children. It felt like old times decorating the tree listening to Burl Ives singing the Christmas classics as only he can.

  3. santa mouse makes me wanna drink a 40 whilst stumbling around the christmas tree!burl always knew how to take any man, woman,or child on "a trip so light and airy"!!!!

  4. Our favorite Christmas albumn is "Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives and we adore his many folk song albumns too. Burl has such a unique voice and a wonderful delivery that makes him one of a kind. I gave 10 "Holly" CDs to people for Christmas this year. We are HUGE Burl Ives fans. Having said that, I was a little disappointed in this albumn. I actually felt bad for him because it would seem that he just couldn't muster enough singing out of his voice and he narrates many of these songs. He was pretty old when he made this albumn. I don't mind some narration and I WANTED to enjoy this CD, but I didn't. We will continue to wear out our "Holly Jolly Christmas" CD but this one will probably get once-a-Christmas-season playing, if that. Maybe it will grow on me and I'll feel differently years from now, but in retrospect, I wish I hadn't purchased this CD. Sorry, Burl.

  5. My assessment of this CD ranges right around the middle of those giving it 5 stars and the one reviewer who went as low as 1 star. Certainly, it's far from the best album of Christmas music ever released by Burl which, in my humble opinion at any rate, is his 1965 Decca LP Have A Holly Jolly Christmas.

This one, which first came out on CD in October 1995 with this cover, and was re-released in September 2000 with a different cover, mixes narration with vocals, with tracks 5, 6 and 10 being solely narratives. There are also 12 tracks, not 11 as indicated. Although they indicate that track 11 is a Medley of Thy Rebuke from The Messiah, and Behold, written by the well-known orchestra leader Robert Mersey, it's simply the former, with Behold located at track 12.

The sound quality for this material, all recorded in 1969 when Burl was 59 years of age and in great form, is excellent. The liner notes, however, are limited to four brief paragraphs written by author Fred Flanagan.

A better bet on CD for traditionalists would be the Geffen release The Very Best Of Burl Ives which contains his three tunes from the 1964 animated TV show Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, the other two being Silver And Gold and A Holly Jolly Christmas.

That last, incidentally, was his only Christmas charted single, first hitting # 13 on the Billboard Christmas charts in 1964 on Decca 31695 b/w Snow For Johnny (which never seems to be included in any of his compilations). It charted again at # 29 in 1968, and in 1998 a new version went to # 30 Adult Contemporary from the 1996 album Rudolph, Frosty And Friends Favorite Christmas Songs on Sony Wonder 67766. Another hard-to-find on CD.

  1. This Christmas album is in the same category as John Berrys' 'O Holy Night'. Top rate. Yess the usual favourites are here and done in the style only Collin Raye can do. Such a distintive style. As an added plus, an instrumental version of 'The First Noel' is included which adds a nice touch.

  2. Collin Raye has demonstrated over the years his unique vocal style---a high, high tenor that sometimes seems as if he's not gonna quite hit the note, but somehow he does. This is both a blessing and a curse for Raye. This album shows that trait on several of the cuts. I Sometimes wonder why he doesn't sing in at least a half note or so lower, then it might come across a little cleaner, a little more natural.
In spite of this, however, one can't deny his effectiveness on this collection of standard holidays tunes, with the inclusion of "It Could Happen Again", a song about the truce in WW II where both sides lay down their weapons and shared Christmas together. This cut is the highlight of the album, along with his Beach-Boyish "Winter Wonderland".
Raye exhibits great taste in his arrangements, and also shows that he has a true Christian spirit in both his singing and in the messages he includes in the liner notes.
    RECOMMENDED.

  3. I don't normally listen to Country music. However, Collin Raye has a special talent in that he can really touch you with his voice. The songs that he sings on "The Gift" are real and heartfelt. You can tell he means what he sings. Especially on the song, "First Noel". His singing is so compassionate, you can visualize the words to the song. I love the opening words spoken by Johnny Cash on "It Could Happen Again". Johnny sets up a song that is very touching. "I'll Be Home for Christmas" has Collin singing at his very best. I was really surprized that Collin could sing so well. I had low expectation when I bought this. However, after listening to it year after year around the holidays, I must say that this is one of my favorite Christmas CDs.

  4. This is the best Christmas CD I ever had. I am and have always been a huge Collin Raye fan. When I bought this CD it was a no brainer.
There are only 3 performers that I am disappointed if I cannot see when they are in my area. Two are Garth Brooks and Billy Joel. Of course Collin Raye is the 3rd. But, since he is rarely in my area (only once in the--oh boy--10 + years I have been listening to him) I can't see him. The one time I can remember was Memorial Day weekend of '05. He was at a local Country Night Club. My ex-boyfriend (and he was an ex than) called me and asked if I wanted to go since he remembered how much I loved Collin Raye. I was in awe. I sang along to EVERY song and dance like it was prom night all over again. The only thing that brought me that much elation was Adam Graves, of (at that time) the NY Rangers hockey team, smiling at a sign I made "for him" at a game they played in Florida.
Even when I played this CD in August my ex just looked at me (like I was a nut but knew). I lost the CD a little less than a year a go and, it being Christmas time, I am longing for it so I had to buy a new one. I recommend it for EVERYONE, even non-country music fans.

  5. Collin Raye is always an exceptional performer, so it was no surprise that this CD is so great! This is music that everyone should listen to during the Christmas season.
