  1. I bought this CD a few years ago and have listened to it every season since, sometimes even after Christmas is over. Kathie Lee has a terrific voice and it's a good song selection. I only wish she would do another Christmas album with some of the songs she's done on her show, such as Sleighride Together With You.

  2. I originally bought the cassette a few years ago. And have loved it ever since. She has the type of voice you'd find in a Christmas choir. Her voice is very comforting and reminds me of my Christmas memories as a child.

  3. Kathie is unknown in Britain (where I live) so my knowledge of her is limited to her music, which is absolutely gorgeous.

I own a lot of Christmas albums, and I often wish that people would show more imagination when it comes to song selection. Yet, there is something magical about the old classics, and Kathie proves it with this outstanding album.

Many of the songs have been recorded countless times, but Kathie brings out the best in them with her lovely, warm voice, sometimes stringing them together in well-planned medleys. Of course, Kathie would know as much as anybody about the joys of Christmas, having raised a family, and that probably helps.

As to the songs, if I have to pick out highlights, here they are.

It's beginning to look like Christmas. There are plenty of covers listed by Amazon, but not in my collection, so it's particularly welcome.

White Christmas. This includes the rarely sung first verse, setting the scene in Beverley Hills. Bing Crosby's original dropped this verse, on the basis that it would leave everything to the imagination, and it would become a song the whole northern hemisphere could relate to. The popularity of the song proves that, but it's always nice to hear that first verse. After all, that's what Irving Berlin wanted.

Most of all I wish you were here. A lovely song which I've never heard before. Other singers needn't rush to record it, though, because they won't improve on Kathie's beautiful rendition.

The best gift. Another rarely recorded song, this one also appeared on Barbra Streisand's first Christmas album, which I also own. On this song, I prefer Kathie's version, though I am a fan of Barbra and there are some songs that Barbra's version is unbeatable. Kathie probably knows that and doesn't record such songs.

I'll be home for Christmas begins with a snippet of Sleigh ride. Like other reviewers, I'd like to hear Kathie's full length version of this song.

As I previously indicated, I love each and every track here. The best Christmas present Kathie can give to her legions of fans is another Christmas album like this (including Sleigh ride, of course).

  4. The title says it all. Kathy Lee has such a wonderful voice. If you've never heard her sing, you are truly missing something. My favorites are "It's Beginning To Look Like Christmas" and "Silver Bells"

  5. This is so sweeet.. Kathie really did a good job on this CD. All the songs are wonderful and really put u in the christmas spirit!! Wish she would make more!! Love Kathie Lee

  1. A different listening experience for sure. The use of Asian instruments to play mostly "Western" style Christmas carols is a nice twist on common themes. Definitely would recommend to someone who likes the classic carols but is looking for a different listening experience.

  2. this is a must..hillarious and brilliantat the same time...on the surface this sounds tacky BUT it is a classic...beautiful music ....traditional carols like you've never hear 'em///

  3. I first listened to this CD with a sense of wonder at the ingenious meld of Oriental instruments playing Christmas carols. To the unitiated, the tunes may sound as traditional Chinese music ("Kok Gak"), but upon closer listening, you will recognize the familiar melodies of Yuletide--albeit richer and invokes a more festive atmosphere.

The amazing weaving of the rich sounds of traditional Oriental musical instruments into the sounds of Christmas make this a truly unique experience.

  4. "Chung King Christmas" is my hands-down favorite Christmas album. I bought it more than ten years ago, because I thought it would be a "howler" to drag out for friends. I wound up being totally captivated by it. When the Chinese-infused orchestra plays "Joy To The World" it sounds truly joyous and rollicking. And you will never hear "Silent Night" or "The First Noel" played so tenderly. The arrangements are imaginative and brilliant -- could you imagine "Rudolph" played as a TANGO? And it WORKS!!!! And yes that, and "I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus" are funny, just like I had originally expected. But they are funny in a way that makes you laugh with the song, not at it. All in all, it is a Christmas album even Scrooge wouldn't mind listening to!

  5. I have heard some of these songs on the radio during the holidays but it was hard to find since it has been out of print from 1991. The songs sound like an Asian marching band playing Christmas songs using instruments you would normally associate with Asian music or as noted on the cover "...with an Oriental Flavor". Although not every song is a winner and the CD sent has some skips, I'm happy with this purchase. It's fun to listen to.

  1. Poor remake of the Phil Spector classic (one of the greatest albums ever made). Why bother if you can't improve on the original and there is no way anyone can improve on the original. Save your money honey. Just make sure you have a mono copy and a stereo copy of the original. Ain't nothin better.

  1. I bought this CD two years ago, someone liked it as much as I, because last year it disappeared. I searched for it at stores and could not find it. I have told many Patti fans about it hoping someone had it but to no avail. Amazon you are the Greatest! Twas Christmas is excellant, Jesus is the Reason for the season is a favorite but the topper is What Are you doing New Year's! I was married last New Year's Eve and it was our Wedding song. The whole CD is Excellent. I play it year round. Wouldn't it be Beautiful if every day could be like Christmas!

  2. This is my favorite holiday CD! It holds a very special place in my heart. It has been a family tradition to play this particular CD as my husband and I decorated our Christmas tree. Unfortunately my husband passed away a year ago. Playing the CD reminds me of the wonderful Christmases we spent together. The song Angel Man feels like it was written especially for me.
I recommend this CD highly for those who love the beautiful music of Patti LaBelle. It doesn't get any better than this.

  3. I wanted to give this album 10 stars, but they wouldn't let me. The first time I listened to 'This Christmas,' I was away at college (feeling lonely that I could not be with my family for the holidays) and it completely brightened my spirit (I truly mean that). Patti LaBelle is one of a handful of musical artists (because she is so genuine and warm, both on and off stage) that can literally send surges of adrenaline throughout your body when you watch her perform. There is something so unusual and cataclysmic about her voice and the way she delivers a song. Patti doesn't just sing a song, like a competitive race car driver, she steers it, she controls it, she makes you feel trimumphant afterwards, like she is by your side every step of the way to the finish line. 'This Christmas' like all of Ms. LaBelle's albums is packed with musical selections that speak to the heart. The title cut, This Christmas, is by far the best rendition of the song that has ever been recorded, what with the magnificant orchestration and wonderful use of deep bass drums in the background (I love that!), This Christmas, very nicely demonstrates Ms. LaBelle's vocal power and unmatched lyrical phrasing (her unique way of delivering individual words or groups of words in any given song and is what sets her squarely apart from other vocalist and where she has no rivals.) Something else I love about this christmas album is it's wide-range of musical styles. From love songs like 'Twas Love,' to country-laden selections like 'Country Christmas, to the contemporary and my FAVORITE selection on the album 'If Everyday Could Be Like Christmas,' The album 'This Christmas' has something for every listener, black or white, young and old. -Everytime I listen to 'If Everyday Could Be Like Christmas' I just want to get up and start singing. I love the message of the song, the contagious beat and those raucous, over the top Patti vocals, and if you turn up the song loud enough, her vocals could clear out your sinuses, forget about the need for cold medicine! All in all, 'This Christmas' is a 10-star compilation of wonderful holiday songs performed in that familiar and fabulous style that is pure Patti LaBelle. Go out and buy a copy, invite a few friends over and have a very Merry Christmas!

  1. I love Christmas music and I love jazz. Eric Reed put together a fine CD in "Merry Magic" starting off with a "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" with vibraphone and piano that just has to put you in a good mood for the holiday season. The vocals are smooth ("Santa Claus is Coming to Town" for example, with Reed singing and playing) and a "Winter Wonderland" piano with jazz trio that is a nice upbeat alternative to the Guaraldi album we always play. The "Santa Baby" is in no way like Eartha Kitt's classic--a nice rhumba interpretation that is so cute. Get this if you love jazz at the holidays--a perfect hostess gift, by the way to any lovers of jazz on your list.

  2. Eric Reed is a monster pianist. Under the right circumstances, he could record a Christmas album that would become an instant classic. This, however, is an unfortunate example of what happens when an overconfident artist tries to do everything himself.

Reed produced and arranged this album himself. Probably if he had hired an objective producer, that producer would have told him to hire an arranger. Reed's arrangements are second-rate. His version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" has been downshifted into a parody that serves as the worst example of an annoying trend: Reed attempts to put a fresh twist on nearly every song. It's an admirable goal, but he doesn't have what it takes; and the result is like a restaurant that serves hamburgers with a knife and fork, and swordfish crumbled over salad. It just doesn't work.

I hope this isn't the last Christmas album from Eric Reed. He's one of the truly original voices of his generation; and with his gospel background and feel for the blues, there's no doubt in my mind he could record an album that would rival "A Charlie Brown Christmas." But this isn't it. He needs to hand over the reins of his next project and focus on the piano.
