1 comments about What's Cooking, Jamela?.
  1. I love the Jamela books.

In this one, Jamela's mother makes the serious mistake of letting her daughter name and become friendly with the chicken they intend to slaughter, eventually resorting to sending her kid on a fool's errand the day before Christmas.

Jamela's no fool - she takes the chicken with her! Hijinks ensue, and Jamela's poor mother gets no sympathy from her neighbors who all (predictably) think Jamela is the cutest thing ever.

There's the normal happy ending, but it's done well enough that it doesn't seem *that* obvious. And all the characters clearly love and care for each other, that's always nice. Can't recommend this one enough.

Note for those interested in the subject, this book does show a quick scene of Jamela wearing a doll (Baby Jesus) on her back in a kanga.

1 comments about Willy and May.
  1. I work in an Elementary school library and i often read to Kindergarten and First grade students. This book is a warm fuzzy story about a little girl and her aunt. The pictures are outstanding and it even has a surprise ending. My students loved it. This is the perfect cuddle up and read together book. It left me wishing I had an Aunt May of my own.

5 comments about Jesus' Christmas Party.
  1. The poor inn keeper keeps getting woken up because two tired travelers need a place to stay, they need blankets, there is a bright light in the sky, three wise mencome looking for a baby...finally he storms down to the barn to give them a piece of his mind but stops when he sees the "lovely" baby. In his excitement he runs and wakes all the people staying at the inn to tell them about the baby!

  2. The simple line drawings are accessilble to all. the innkeeper certainly didn't know what he was in for when he let Mary and Joseph use the stable. Despite the bright light and all the interruptions the innkeeper finally gets in the spirit of things. A short, sweet look at the joy everyone had at the birth of a special baby.

  3. I love this book. I bought three, two to give away and one to keep. I have it sitting on the coffee table. People pick it up, think it's a cute kid's book and read through it. I can always tell when they get to the end...there is a little sigh and a look of peace! It reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas. That our lives are hectic, just as the inn keepers night was, but he took time to celebrate the baby's birth!

  4. This charming story gives a realistic spin to how things really might have been out there in Bethlehem. It makes me laugh everytime I read it, and it makes a wonderful skit that our family loves to put on at Christmas time

  5. This is one of the best books ever! Our family has enjoyed this book for years! Sometimes we even act out the parts. It is so entertaining. It started us on a Nicholas Allan kick where we seek out his books. Some are rather irreverent, such as The Queen's Knickers, but all in good fun. Jesus' Christmas Party is the best one.

4 comments about The Polar Express: The Movie: The Magic Journey: Deluxe Storybook (Polar Express the Movie).
  1. I went to see this movie last night in 3D! and immediately went to buy the book. The book accurately depicts the movie and how wonderful the story and pictures are. I highly recommend this book!

  2. I went to see the movie and it was great!!!
Then, I bought the movie Storybook and the pictures
were very dark, instead of bright and cheerful.
I recommend if you want the polar express storybook,
buy the original Polar Express book by Chris Van Allsburg,
not the Magic Journey, Polar Express Movie Storybook.
I was quite dissatified with the pictures.

  3. We saw the movie last year with my then 2 year old who loved the movie. We bought The Polar Express book and he loves having it read to him. This year we bought the DVD and he has watched it many times this Christmas season. Someone gave my mother The Magic Journey and when we read it to my now 3 year old he has found some of the errors in it and I have found more. Some of the pictures are directly from the movie and others are not. The Lonely Boy, Billy, is dressed differently at the beginning of the book than he actually was in the movie and is at the end of the book. The hero boy pulled the brake in the engine to stop for the cariboo, not the girl. There are more errors than this, too many to list. Don't buy this book, buy the original. It is beautifully written and illustrated. This book is a joke.

  4. This book was what we wanted - the original book is not enough like the movie for us.

My little girl LOVES the Brave Girl (as we call her), the Lonely boy, the ghost, and all the stuff that happenns on the train ride (skiing, Karaboo, the roller coaster effects etc). The original Book has NONE of those elements. So for us this book was PERFECT!

The previous reviewer said the inconsistancies really bugged her. We felt the differences in the art were no big deal - most occur at a distance so they had little impact. As for it being "dark" the movie occurs at night. . . it's almost always dark!

There are a bunch of pixs I wish they had included but this book had all the major elements that we were hoping would be there - we are quite pleased. I hope the movie releases a book with tons more pixs but if they never do this book does a nice job .

3 comments about Lizzie McGuire: A Very Lizzie Christmas - Book #8 : Junior Novel (Lizzie Mcguire) (Lizzie Mcguire).
  1. My daughter loves Lizzie! She couldn't put this book down! If a book can keep her that interested, I'm sure to buy her more of these! I recommend it highly!

  2. This book is two different stories put together, so I've reviewed each part separately.

Part 1: 10/10 Lizzie is determined to make a float that wins the contest so she can go to Aspen for Christmas. But she gets mad when her parents, brother, and best friend decide to help fix the plumbing at a retirement home instead of help her with her project. But then Lizzie learns the true meaning of Christmas, and decides whats important.

Part 2:9/10 Lizzie and her friends want to sneak onto the set of a music video being made by Zander Knight.

Overall a great book. I would recommend it to fans of the series.

  3. A very lizzie christmas is a great book. Lizzie's friends go to the mall and judge this years santa, lizzie also wants to help larry tudgemans float . But every body wants to help knobby lizzie is furious she thinks she has lost the true meaning of christmas. And if you like lizzie mcguire then this is the book for you.

3 comments about Redneck Night Before Christmas (Night Before Christmas Series).
  1. Amusing and very creative in content. Sure to hold attention. Very good for Christmas. Adults will appreciate the book as well as children. Very colorful! Worth the money!

  2. I was hoping for something to read to a child. Instead I found Santa mixed up with the NRA and toting a Confederate flag. Adults may find this an amusing rendition of St. Nick's visit with clever illustrations - but I'd never read this to a child.

  3. If you or someone you know is a genuine redneck--then buy this book! Davis crammed his book full of great lingo, authentic redneck details, and hilarious parody. Just don't try to drink an RC cola while you read, or you'll end up laughing and spewing it all over the book. Take it from one who knows!
