2 comments about The Santero's Miracle: A Bilingual Story (Americas Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature. Commended (Awards)).
- Award-winning author and illustrator team Rudolfo Anaya and Amy Cordova present The Santero's Miracle: A Bilingual Story, an English/Spanish Christmas tale about the power of miracles. Don Jacobo is teaching his visiting grandson Andres how to become a santero; the two of them are working on a carving of San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers. Due to the great snowfall, Andres' parents cannot come home in time for the holiday, and don Jacobo's neighbor, don Leopoldo, is severely ill but cannot reach the hospital. Then don Jacobo dreams of a miracle: San Isidro plowing with two oxen and and an angel helping. The meaning of the dream brings about a reminder of the power of compassion, faith, and love. The bright color illustrations practically leap off the page in this joyful and uplifting story meant to be shared.
- The Santero's Miracle is a very sweet story that captures the culture and traditions of Northern New Mexico. The persons who carve saints (santeros) are highly regarded here. Many families have a multi-generational tradition of carving.
This story illustrates the unique culture that developed in the remote mountains of Northern New Mexico. This is a rare place in America.
The illustrations are exquisite. It doesn't matter what religious tradition the reader practices -- this is a story for everyone.

5 comments about Jolly Old Santa Claus: Collectors Edition Featuring the Original Story.
- Very sweet and timeless. A classic story of the wonder and magic that only Santa can inspire. It's been around for generations and will continue to be for generations to come. Read it with your little ones - it will become a wonderful holiday tradition!
- This new "Collector's Edition" is nothing like the original as it claims. The pictures look dingy and dark and don't capture the same magic as the orginal book did. I was thoroughly disppointed to see what had been done to it.
- Growing up, "Jolly Old Santa Claus" was a Christmas Eve tradition in my family. And since the one original copy we had growing up still belongs to our parents, my siblings and I were elated to receive copies of this "Collector's Edition" for Christmas. Until we opened the book, that is. Many illustrations have been left out, and the ones that have been included are washed out, airbrushed and cropped and do not begin to do justice to the originals. Although it claims to feature the "Original Story by Sparkie", somehow the magical "Brownies" we always cherished have been transformed into commonplace "Elves" and "Lazy Brownie" has become the more politically correct "Jeepers Elf". What a disappointment! If you remember this book fondly from your childhood, you will be disappointed. If you just want a great story to share with your kids, buy it. It's still one of the best Santa books around.
- What a wonderful story and beautiful illustrations! This has become THE defining start of the Christmas season at our house! The rich colors and nostalgic figures delight all ages and transport some of us back to Christmas' past. A bargain at any price! Thanks for the memories!!
- The inside illustrations are very nice, but the story is only fine--nothing amazing. The illustrations would benefit from a larger format. It's difficult to make out the detail and get absorbed in all that's going on in the illustrations. The cover, oddly, makes my 13 month old daughter cry when she looks at it. We had to put tape over Santa's face because whenever she pulled this book off the shelf she'd break out into tears. The inside illustrations do not bother her. I probably just have a sensitive daughter, but even if the cover didn't make her cry, I would not purchase the book new. I'd look for it at a garage sale or thrift store.

5 comments about Candle: A Story of Love and Faith.
- A must for a Basenji lover's library.
- A delightful story for all ages, this beautifully illustrated tale of the little Basenji who shares in the joy and wonder of the first Christmas is truly a timeless classic!
- A basenji friendly household boasted of a pair of breeding basenjis and their two adorable puppies. The senior basenjis told their puppies the story of Candle, a basenji ancestor who really did show everyone the way.
An African breed that boasts of a more than 2,000 year history, the famed "barkless" dog (basenjis yodel and make laughing noises instead), these dogs were the loved pets of Egyptian aristocracy and nobility. The story of Candle takes place in Egypt.
A lovable young basenji named Candle is the adored pet in a royal household. Basenjis, naturally intelligent and curious were aware that something wonderful and miraculous was about to take place. The "basenji network" were aware that the days of excess and idolatry were soon to be challenged; a miracle was on the way.
Candle and her owner, a young Egyptian gentleman saw the Star shining brightly in the East and knew they had to follow it....
Readers will yodel with delight as well. This is truly a wonderful family bonding book and it is certainly a beautiful illustration of love and faith. I can't recommend it highly enough. I love it! The lovely illustrations and the gentle story will captivate readers of all ages.
Candle will light a path to the hearts of all who read her story.
- This story is not only wonderful for children, but also adult basenji lovers. A must for ever family who has ever had or known a basenji. Candle will find a place in your heart forever!
- Candle is a gentle, refined Basenji who "brought a glow into human hearts when she was near." Her story explains several Basenji physical traits as relating to the birth of Christ and her journey with the wise men. This must have been written by someone who loves a Basenji as much as I love my Basenji companion. The care given to the illustrations and the joy within them captures the Basenji spirit and soul. It may seem like a child's Christmas story but anyone who loves a Basenji will delight in it. It is a small cost for something that brings deep joy and although I bought it on a whim it has become one of my most treasured books. If you know a Basenji lover, scoop this one up.
