2 comments about The Trees Kneel at Christmas.
  1. Although I read and reread all of the author's Betsy-Tacy books as a child, I had never heard of "The trees kneel at Christmas" until it was rescued and rereleased by Abdo and Daughters several years ago.

The story was inspired by a legend the author heard from a Lebanese immigrant woman while living in New York. She kept the legend -- that the cedar trees in Lebanon kneel down at midnight on Christmas Eve -- in her mind for quite some time, until a visit to a local school matched the face of a young girl with the story.

The story is told quite simply and timelessly. Young Afify hears the legend of the kneeling cedars from her grandmother and wonders if the trees kneel in Brooklyn, too. The remainder of the story follows her as she sets out in search of a miracle.

  2. This book is a must read for anyone familiar with Lebanese/Syrian immigrants to the US in the last 100 years.

The characters and customs in the book are so much like the people and things I remember as a child.

If you are of Lebanese/Syrian descent, you should read this book to your children/grandchildren. It's a great way to keep the values and customs alive of our parents and grandparents.

2 comments about Nativity (Lift and Look).
  1. This is not a regular lift-the-flap book. It's a foam book, with cardstock pages glued on. It has removable shapes, like several one-piece puzzles. I'm worried that the pieces will get lost, so I am planning to return the book.

  2. My daughter loves this book! She was 20 months around Christmas time and it is so hard to find nativity books for that age group that keep their interest. This book is so well loved, we haven't put it away even though it is well after Christmas.

To respond to the other review, yes, it is foam with puzzle pieces. They are, however, very sturdy and do not fall out on their own. They are easy enough for a toddler to get the pieces out.

I like this book because it is the one nativity book that my daughter wants to read again and again because it is fun. She lets me actually read the words since she is interested in the book.

I will be ordering the other books in this series.

  1. Wonderfully imagined illustrations of the classic poem contain details galore. The more you look, the more you see.

  2. Most of the English-speaking world is familiar with "The Night Before Christmas". As children's literature goes, it rests mainly on its nostalgic laurels. This version of the old classic is absolutley the best out there. It is done with great imagination, humor, whimsy and artistic skill. Each time you read it you will see a new treasure. (such as Santa's GPS unit or elves in curly-toes high top sneakers).

  1. Charming pictures full of clever details, plus a glimpse of other cultures. The picture of the Taj Mahal is particularly beautiful!

  2. Linas Alsenas' MRS. CLAUS TAKES A VACATION wonders why Santa's getting all the travel time while she stays at home in the North Pole. Her decision to let Santa prepare for the holidays alone promotes independence and a fun adventure in this different holiday story.

  3. After reading a review in the paper, I thought this would be a great book to read with my grandchildre at the holidays. It was just okey. Not one that I will save and read again.

  4. I gave this book to my young cousins and neighbors for Christmas this past year, and it has been a big hit with all of them! Mrs. Claus Takes a Vacation is a beautiful book that tells a lovely and original story. The illustrations are very detailed and clever (it's fun to spot the reindeer) and introduce children to new places as well (Mrs. Claus eating sushi in Japan is particularly cute, and the Lithuanian folk dance spread is charming!). I highly recommend this book as a wonderful Christmas gift that is sure to be read year after year!

  5. WE ALL LIKED SEEING MRS. CLAUS AT THE BEACH! CUTE LITTLE EASY TO READ STORY WITH A NICE ROMANTIC ENDING! GLAD WE HAVE IT IN OUR COLLECTION!

  1. This book is a wonderful book for a quiet calm, nighttime story during the Christmas Holidays. It has calming text, calming pictures and yet it captures the majesty and awe that is Christmas better than any other Christmas story I've read. If you have young children and love Christmas, I heartily recommend this book.

  2. I have been reading this book to preschoolers and Kindergarteners for over 15 years. They all love it. The book I have is an older edition and it only has a few colors in the illustrations. It doesn't matter, though. The words are so descriptive that the children are captivated. That's quite an accomplishment in today's world of TV and DVDs!

  3. This book builds up the mystery of Christmas. It begins with children snuggled in their beds, just as in Twas the Night Before Christmas. But these children can't sleep- -they want to touch the Christmas tree. They go downstairs and look at the tree and all the gifts. Then instead of hearing the clatter of hooves on the roof, they hear Christmas carolers out in the yard. Listening to the carolers, they return to their beds. The pictures and words capture the mystery and excitement of Christmas, without trying to impart a lesson or moral. All told, the book contains about 550 words.

  4. I bought this book 10 years ago when my first daughter was born. The words flow and the illustrations are beautiful. It's a nice cozy sit down and cuddle with your kids before bed book. I keep it on the shelf and each Christmas season it comes out and gets read several times. A classic!
