  1. As a former student of Mr. Bahr, I was thrilled to find and order his book at Amazon.com. As soon as it arrived, I sat down and read the entire book in less than 20 minutes. It is a charing tale of two small children finding some happiness and a new home during the difficult Post-Civil war days. This is a story, I will enjoy sharing with my daughter for years to come.

  2. A beautifullly rich yet simply written little story. I am ordering several copies to give as Christmas gifts.

  3. Howard Bahr has written an absolutely charming, heartbreaking and heartwarming little novel. It's the winter of 1865 with Christmas just a few days away. Recently freed from slavery, Isaiah has taken the two orphaned children of his former master to live with their Uncle. In a mere 49 pages, the lives of four people are completely changed and each must come to terms with these changes as they struggle to prepare the Christmas celebration they so desperately need. The two men establish a guarded relationship, each recognizing their own sense of duty to these children. The girl begins to take on the nesting responsibilities learned from her mother. Only the boy cannot reconcile, insisting that he's going "home for Christmas." Read it and weep.

1 comments about Cowboy Christmas (Woody's Roundup, 9).
  1. This book is the nineth in a series based on the Woody's Roundup gang (Woody, Jessie and the Prospector) from Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 2. In this book, it's Christmas time for the Roundup gang. The Prospector has a gold nugget that he would like nice bag for, Woody has his wonderful hat, and Jessie has her bright new cowgirl boots. Each would like to get the other what he or she really wants, but lacks the funds. Where can they get money quick? This is a story of unselfish giving.

This short book is printed on a heavy grade of paper and contains a copious amount of wonderful, pencil-drawn illustration; both of which conspire to give this book a 1950s feel! The story is wonderful, being something of an update of the old story of a husband with a gold pocket watch, and a wife with beautiful long hair. Both of my children (boy-8 and girl-10) enjoyed this book, and we all recommend it to you!

1 comments about Santa's New Suit.
  1. Santa needs a new suit. His old ones are torn, or stained, or too tight. So, a week before Christmas, like any good shopper, he heads to town to look for a suit. The stores he visits have clever names like 'Nip and Tux' (a tuxedo shop) and 'Costumania'. When Santa arrives back at the North Pole in his new suit, the elves, the reindeer and even Mrs. Santa cannot believe their eyes! Ms. Rader employs the use of speech bubbles to show the surpised, often comic, reaction of her characters. Needless to say, all turns out well in the end and the last page of the book is a satisfying conclusion to the story. a great addition to any kids' (or adult's) Holiday collection.

1 comments about The Twelve Days of Christmas in Wisconsin (Twelve Days of Christmas, State By State).
  1. I picked this up at Barnes and Noble last week, as it was featured near the check out. I just love it! I think my 7 year old son will adore it. This would make an EXCELLENT Christmas gift for a youngster.

It explains some fun activities and festivites you can explore in Wisconsin, and specifically what makes the state unique and interesting. Also, it lists famous people from Wisconsin and fun facts such as the state bird and state motto. What a darling book and great concept, knowledgeable yet entertaining. Five stars.

1 comments about Humphrey's Christmas.
  1. Children who fell in love with the adorable small elephants in "Humphrey's Corner" and "Humphrey's Bedtime" will be delighted with the holiday preparations of Humphrey and his sister, Lottie.

Together they watch the snow fall, and help their father shovel the fluffy white drifts. They make brightly colored decorations and hang them on their tree. Decorating a special cake is also part of this happy time of year. Until, finally, it is Christmas Eve and the excitement is just a night's sleep away.

Illustrated in full color and recommended for ages 2 -5, "Humphrey's Christmas" is a bright, cheery addition to holiday reading.
