  1. I bought this book because my family loves the water and boating. The book is well written and fun for all ages. It's a delightful "tall tale" of Christmas on board as told by the salty first mate. I highly recommend "Sailors Night Before Chirstmas" to anyone, young or just young at heart who ever wondered, just how does Santa get to people on boats. Reading this Christmas story just might become one of our family's holiday traditions.

  2. This book was written with belly laughs in mind for the Christmas season. The zany illustrations fit perfectly with the great writing. Kids of all ages will be happy to find this book in their stocking!

  1. Every year our family finds itself looking at our town's Christmas lights. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS is a great way to "re-enjoy" our trip.

  2. I thought that this book is a great book for children. The illustrations are great and the storyline is simple enough for young children. My children thoroughly enjoyed it.

  1. I picked this up for my son because he's into aliens and I really enjoyed reading it to him. I found myself laughing at the nutty humor and storyline, and the illustrations are really rich and unique. It doesn't hurt that there's a little forward by famous animator Ray Harryhausen, one of my personal heroes. There's even a blurb by Ray Bradbury! How much more of an endorsement do you need? This will be a holiday favorite in my family for years to come.

  2. The Chiodos never fail to amaze me with their imagination and creativity. This story is no Santa vs The Martians. And its not Giving vs Receiving. It's the End of the World... and right before Christmas! X is like Invader Zim, going off on his leader's assignment, with stealing being so natural for his kind. To see the alien awaken to the love behind Christmas is reminiscent of Alf's Christmas, but within a crazy, exciting, and (at one point) hopeless scenario, it's a whole lot more fun. Seeing what happens to Santa's airborne sleigh had me convinced there was no happy ending in sight. Without giving it away, the ending will delight any reader, young or old, sci-fi fan or not. Its very clever, very hip, and does not talk down children. If you like a heartwarming story that isn't sickeningly sweet, packed with gorgeous artwork from Charlie Chiodo, you have to get a copy of this book. This book is also a must for any Chioo Bros fans. Its a rare chance to see how their projects look drawn up before fabrication or shooting starts. Honestly, the illustrations alone are worth the price. After reading X's story, I bought copies for all my sci-fi friends. I'll also never be able to see the word "Xmas" in the same light.. or should I say the same color?

  3. Nothing says Christmas like marauding aliens! "X" is a thieving alien who is sent to Earth on a fiendish mission to rob the entire planet. But upon arriving at the North Pole, X mistakes Santa's workshop for a weapons-building facility and thus begins a chain of events that leads to an all-out alien invasion. Can Santa and his trust elf save Christmas (not to mention the human race!). Or will an army of evil aliens learn that is better to give than to steal? Co-authored by Stephen Chiodo and Jim Strain, "Alien Xmas" is expertly illustrated by Charles Chiodo. The resulting collaboration is a unique, original, one-of-a-kind, superbly presented and enthusiastically recommended Christmas picturebooks that combines science fiction with the values of the Christmas season. This is one Christian picturebook that will thoroughly and completely entertain children and adults alike.

1 comments about Christmas at the Little Zoo.
  1. I had this book as a child , and now have it again. I feel it is the definitive children's Christmas book. The book reads to the same rhythm as the Night Before Christmas. It's the story about zoo animals that celebrate Christmas. Pokey the polar bear is so homesick for the North Pole and misses Santa ever so much. A blizzard hits on Christmas Eve, and it looks like Santa isn't going to be able to find them. Pokey, of course, finds a way to help Santa find his way. The cover has a fuzzy Pokey the polar bear on it. Inside are two popup pages. If lucky one might find a copy with some of the original goodies (little zoo cards, balloon, measuring tape, etc.)Read & enjoy!

  1. My children love this Joni Walker board book as much as her others. This book offers a look at the real meaning of Christmas and its symbols even for a very young child. Celebrate the symbolism that is all around us.

  2. The symbols of the Christmas season are related to the reason for
the Christmas celebration. This is done by way of charming art and a
narative poem. The book is constructed of laminated cardboard. Each
page is glossy and colorful. The begining page writes"Jesus is all around".The remaing pages illustrates how Christmas trees, snow on the ground, songs we sing, and gift giving relates to "Jesus all around".
A thoughtfull, concise and beautifully illustrated story about "Jesus all around". You will enjoy this as much as your child.

  3. This is a nice little book to introduce the Christmas Story. I thought it would be a little more in depth but it is still a nice little story.

  1. Searching for a way to integrate the true meaning of Christmas with the story of Santa Claus? Search no more. This book helped solved my dilemna on Santa Claus - since he's become so commercialized in our society and kids have become greedy, I hesitated to tell the story of Santa in our house. This book changed my mind. Santa begins as the true bearer of gifts to the Baby Jesus. He continues to spread the story of the Savior's birth and his miraculous visit to adults and children everywhere each Christmas, while bearing handmade toys for the children. A great book to teach young and all the true meaning of Christmas.

  2. I was absolutely delighted with the warmth and imagination contained in this childrens book. The idea of bringing Santa and Jesus together was wonderful and helps to remind us what Christmas is all about.

The illustrations are well drawn but uncomplicatd so don't detract from the story at all.

This book also contains a wonderful little side story. Can't see it? Just follow the dog in the illustrations. It is very amusing and compliments the joy brought through to us in the main story.

As a childrens yuletide book I have not found better. It is a pitty I have run out of kids to send it to.

  3. This book beautifully balances Santa Claus and the Nativity in a story that is both inspiring and engaging. The colors and folk art drawings are a delightful departure from the typical seasonal fare. The most fantastic picture has to be the one depicting the subtle change in Santa's appearance when he gives the baby his humble gift.

If you are looking for a story that doesn't diminish the lore of St. Nick and his generosity but doesn't overshadow the Nativity, look no more. You've found it!

  4. What does Christmas mean to you? As a child, I was one who couldn't get enough of its wonder. Santa was a huge part of this feeling.

Yet time passes, wonder fades. Knowledge drives out belief. The world grows hard and dull.

The greatness of The Bearer of Gifts is that it tells two tales wrapped together in one story. The wondrous truth of Christmas and its meaning are expressed in a fun remaking and retelling of Santa's story. Fused together, this creates an honest little book that haunts the memory even as it delights the soul.

The retelling of the story of Santa Claus is brilliant. Wrapped in the icy mists of its Lapland setting, it is an invigorating blast of cold that gives the tale of Santa a new freshness. Any staleness brought about by the constant retelling of the Santa story is blown away by Steven Kenneth's stark vision.

This Santa story is masterfully woven into the true meaning of Christmas--the Free Gift of God to all people in His Son. Santa leaves his home in Lapland to follow a star across the winter sky. His journeys take him far from home--the foot of a stable.

The Bearer of Gifts is a book that is both simple and profound. Its loving illustrations and spare language make it something truly special. This book peels back layers of obscurity and heartless commercialization that have dulled the meaning of Christmas in the heart of many.

Christmas is a time of wonder. If its wonder has grown cold in your heart, I can think of no greater way to rekindle it than to curl up with this book on a winter's night. I give The Bearer of Gifts a strong recommendation.

  1. This is a heartwarming story of a family who, regardless of the hard time they've had, recognize the blessings in their life. The last page, where the father is grateful for his family and their home, truly moved me.
