1 comments about The Little Wing Giver.
  1. Once upon a time a little boy appeared with a bottomless sack, full of wings. There were fluffy white wings, scissor-pointed wings, gossamer wings, even wooden wings, in all shapes, colors and sizes. The Little Wing Giver called out to all, "Come get your wings./Beautiful wings!/Come get your wings/And fly, fly, fly!" And birds, insects and butterflies all came to him, and soon the world was full of flight. But the wind grew jealous one night, and blew all the Little Wing Giver's wings away, forever. The Little Wing Giver grew sad and very tired and lay down and fell into a deep sleep. The birds sang to him and the insects tickled him, but he wouldn't wake up. Finally, a nosy magpie saw one last pair of wings sticking out of the Little Wing Giver's pocket. The creatures quickly attached them to his shoulders, and he soared away, up into the sky. "And it was on seeing the Little Wing Giver flying toward Him through a sunlit cloud that gave God the idea of creating angels."..... Jacques Taravant has written a whimsical and evocative story, that will charm youngsters with its imagery and magic. His tender text, and gentle message, is complemented by award winning artist, Peter Sis' enchanting illustrations and together they've authored a spiritual and uplifting story that's sure to become a classic. Perfect for all ages, The Little Wing Giver is a wonderful family read-aloud story to share and discuss and pass on to loved ones, friends and future generations.

  1. Paul Nicholas is sure that this Christmas will be the absolute best. For once he has a great girlfriend, Sarah, who just happens to love Christmas as much as he does, or at least the present part; he's got the job of being the mall Santa Claus, and he's getting the absolute perfect present this year, a jeep. Everything is just fine, beyond fine, until Paul loses his lucky Santa hat, and everything goes wrong. First he finds his girlfriend making out with the mall Santa Claus, who just happens to be the same one who'll be training him for his job next week, his father electrocutes himself while putting up Christmas lights, and almost burns down the house at the same time, and his mother loses her job. Now, the kid who has always been the biggest nut over Christmas, has decided to get even with the holiday, and everything associated with it.

As someone who absolutely LOVES reading books about the Christmas season, I was ecstatic to find JINGLE BOY. Not only is it one of the only teen fiction Christmas books on the market, but it is also one of the funniest I've ever read. Reminiscent of John Grisham's SKIPPING CHRISTMAS, JINGLE BOY is a must for all who love (or hate) the holiday season. It will keep you laughing out loud throughout the entire holiday season. Possibly longer. Don't miss it.

  2. This book was amazing. It's the perfect novel to read even if it isn't Christmas time. It's hilariously funny, with memorable characters and a catchy plot. A must-read for all fans of teen fiction!

  1. I was really disappointed with this book. If you are a Carl fan, you will not like this book. The illustrations do not bring the family or their plight to life. Some of their belongings, i.e. a commercial popcorn machine, didn't quite fit in the scheme. It would make a nice Christmas gift book for a child. Perhaps the story would have been better suited to the late 1800's or early 1900's.

  2. Delightful tale of twelve animals and three humans moving house on Christmas Eve. A warm-hearted fantasy world where all the animals do their share. It gives a hopeful message that even in hard circumstances, working together to a good plan the family can survive. The enchanting pictures remind me of The Tompten and other Scandinavian picture books. The magic things (such as Pinnochio) move with the creatures as well as the practical (the dryer!) A real Christmas classic, about hope and sharing, reminding us that the first Christmas was spent in the barn.

  3. I don't have any children nor grandchildren in this age group. I have not read any of the "Carl" books for which Alexandra Day is evidently noted. I saw the cover drawing with a goat toting a Christmas tree & was intrigued. Looking through the book brought smiles & a desire to own this book. At home I found the pictures drew me back again & again. The wild collection of possessions & the large number of pets made me feel right at home. I enjoyed this book so much I went back to get more copies for friends but the book store was sold out. Thus, here I am at amazon.com finding the book I was seeking all over the state. As you can tell, this book is one of my favorites & if I were still a preschool teacher my students would be enjoying it right along with me.

  1. In this collection of stories and poems, the fascinating traditions and customs of Christmas are revealed on single-page features. Each story is accompanied by fascinating information on a page illustrated with colorful photographs from around the world. These pages give insights into various traditions and aspects of the Christmas holiday. Why do we have Christmas trees? Do you know who Santa Claus really is?

Anne Yvonne Gilbert has illustrated the stories in such delightful detail. She began as a freelance illustrator in 1978 and has since published illustrated books on both sides of the Atlantic for most major publishers. Many pieces of her prize-winning original artwork reside in private collections, including one owned by England's Princess Margaret.

This is a collection of traditional favorites by Charles Dickens, Louisa May Allcott, Hans Christian Andersen, and Clement C. Moore. Modern classics are also included. Each story has been chosen to illustrate a Christmas theme.

The stories include: The Cherry Tree Carol, The Little Fir Tree, A Merry Christmas, Really, Truly, Reilly, The Christmas Cherries, Christmas Dinner at the Cratchits, The Twelve Days of Christmas, The Cat on the Dovrefell, The Holly and the Ivy, There's Snow on the Fields, A Christmas Story, A Visit from Saint Nicholas and Baboushka.

A Merry Christmas is a story about Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy who's father is away fighting in the Civil War. They have no presents to look forward to at Christmastime. Their mother promises them they will have a surprise waiting for them under their pillows when they awake. A Christmas Story is one told by gypsy mothers on the night of Christmas. A Visit from St. Nicholas is actually the traditional "Night before Christmas" poem made popular by Clement Clark Moore.

Baboushka is a story of a woman who goes searching for the Christ Child and is looking still. She was too busy looking for toys and cleaning them and doesn't go with the three kings to see the Christ Child. Perhaps there is a great lesson in this story as God seeks our hearts, not our outward display of gifts. Now Baboushka is said to go from house to house seeking for the Christ Child and if she hears of a good deed, she leaves a toy from her basket for a sleeping child.

    ~The Rebecca Review

  2. If I could give Zero stars this book would get it! This book almost ruined our Christmas Eve! Senior editor Alastair Dougall of Doring Kindersley removed key parts of the classic tale The Night Before Christmas, for which the book takes it name!

The stanzas beginning with "The children were nestled all snug in their beds," "When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter" are completely GONE!

The editors must have needed to shorten the classic poem to make room for other stories of Christmas which are indeed beautiful but they don't make up for the missing parts of the classic poem. Perhaps the removed verses are part of some original version but there is no indication of this in the book.

Once I realized the hack job that these editors had done, I was lucky to be able to locate our old copy of Moore's poem from last year which I could read aloud to my 6-year-olds.

  1. I bought this book as a gift to my daughter and it has the most incredible pictures and cute story. This is the type of book that will be a keepsake and brought out every year as part of tradition!

  2. My twin girls insist on reading their favorite book, "Goodnight" (by the same author and illustrator) every night, and I was thrilled to find another book with the same little girl, Max, Theo, JoJo, and the rest of the gang. Since the girl didn't have a name in "Goodnight", we named her Debbie, but now we know her name is Juliette! (so we now call her Debbie Juliette...). Anyway, these are MY two favorite books to read to my two favorite 2-year-olds, I can't get enough of the pictures, they are beautiful. I plan to buy this book for Christmas presents! Great simple story and dozens of things to look at on each page, again, the pictures are adorable, water-colorey...

  3. There are several things I love about this book, 1 is that the illustrator is excellent! The book is just beautiful to look at, it's a quick read and I'd love to have a stuffed dragon like hers white bandage and all!

I love the story and the excitement of Christmas day, for us parents it takes me back to my childhood and I'm sure it will do the same for you, I know it will be one of our books to read in December as well as a Christmas Eve reading along with Twas the Night Before Christmas, this book is that cute.

The last thing I love about this book is for me that I see the daughter as being adopted. I guess we all see what we choose to see and with my daughter looks exactly like the character.

  4. My daughter had me read this board book to her every day before christmas. She like the character has lots of stuffed animal "friends" - and the pictures are great

2 comments about 'Twas the Night: The Nativity Story.
  1. Looking for a book that explained the Nativity Story in a simple manner turned out to be a bigger project than I thought. Most stories were either too detailed, too long, or too secular for my tastes. I even saw one that had grotesque drawings! This one turned out to be just perfect. My 2 1/2 and 4 year old girls loved the rhyming, cute animals and the story was simple. I highly recommend this book

  2. I ordered this item based solely on another review at Amazon, a sample image of a page and a general frustration at the lack of children's Nativity stories in bookstores (where you can find countless Christmas stories about Santa, Spongebob, Dora the Explorer - and even a handful of Hannukah and Kwaanza tales - but not a single decent children's version of the Christian Nativity story).

The illustrations in this book are excellent and our 18-month-old triplets enjoy the pictures very much. The text is the big let-down here and I believe its failing is its intent to follow the cadence of "The Night Before Christmas." The reader is left then with awkward rhymes about Mary's labor pains (and too much perspective from stable animals) as opposed to a broad picture of the Nativity tale. The message is left a little muddled and lost.

Definitely not a bad option but one may want to dig deeper (or visit a Christian bookstore) for a book that balances the true story of Christmas with good, age-appropriate writing and enjoyable illustrations.
