  1. I purchased this book for my six grandchildren. The book is unique in the fact that it is something similar to a diaorma. The book opens and the back and front are tied together at the edges with ribbon and the entire story of the first Christmas is then seen around the circle of the book. I understand that is like a pop-up book also. I did not see this book before I purchased it on-line but this is the description given to me by my daughter. They loved it.

  1. I was really disappointed with this book. If you are a Carl fan, you will not like this book. The illustrations do not bring the family or their plight to life. Some of their belongings, i.e. a commercial popcorn machine, didn't quite fit in the scheme. It would make a nice Christmas gift book for a child. Perhaps the story would have been better suited to the late 1800's or early 1900's.

  2. Delightful tale of twelve animals and three humans moving house on Christmas Eve. A warm-hearted fantasy world where all the animals do their share. It gives a hopeful message that even in hard circumstances, working together to a good plan the family can survive. The enchanting pictures remind me of The Tompten and other Scandinavian picture books. The magic things (such as Pinnochio) move with the creatures as well as the practical (the dryer!) A real Christmas classic, about hope and sharing, reminding us that the first Christmas was spent in the barn.

  3. I don't have any children nor grandchildren in this age group. I have not read any of the "Carl" books for which Alexandra Day is evidently noted. I saw the cover drawing with a goat toting a Christmas tree & was intrigued. Looking through the book brought smiles & a desire to own this book. At home I found the pictures drew me back again & again. The wild collection of possessions & the large number of pets made me feel right at home. I enjoyed this book so much I went back to get more copies for friends but the book store was sold out. Thus, here I am at amazon.com finding the book I was seeking all over the state. As you can tell, this book is one of my favorites & if I were still a preschool teacher my students would be enjoying it right along with me.

  1. Perfectly enhanced with Bill Farnsworth's artwork, Nancy LeSourd's Christy: Christmastime At Cutter Gap is a wonder-filled picturebook based on the classic novel "Christy" by Catherine Marshall. An outgoing young redheaded girl is determined to spend Christmas season with her father, who has not been seen in years. Her courageous and perilous journey through the snow lead to a quiet miracle that spreads joy and love to her family and friends in this superbly presented story.

  1. but not much fun for people in between. I find most of the Hello Kitty books overpriced, but I was lucky enough to get this one 50% last year. It's very cute & full of religion-free Christmas fun, but honestly, it's a bit dull, but makes a good gift for any Hello Kitty fan, or for little girls around 6 years old. And it comes with some punch-out ornaments so you can make your tree just as cute as the book!

5 comments about Elmo ABC's Storybook With Sound (Sesame Street).
  1. This is one of my daughter's favorite books and it also the best ABC book that I've come across. Elmo tries to decide what his favorite letter is, from "D" is for dogs, "I" for imagination, and "Z" for Zoe. Each page has the letter highlighted and a reason why Elmo likes the letter. This books has a good pace and pleasing pictures. It's a great addition for anyone trying to teach the alphabet in a fun and exciting way.

  2. I am usually a big fan of books for children, and I bought this for my 2-year-old son because he is crazy about Elmo and is learning the alphabet. While the drawings in this book are cute (expect nothing less from Elmo!), the text is completely inane. I dread reading this book to my son because it is mind-numbingly dull and poorly written.

Elmo is searching for his favorite letter. Fine. It's cute that E is for Elmo and M is for Monster -- those things are directly relevant to Elmo and his little life. But then the book tosses in random items ("T is for turtles and turtles are terrific!") that just come out of nowhere and are not at all related to Sesame Street -- they just don't fit, and it makes it sound as if this book was thrown together. Basically, I think the problem is that there's no real overarching "theme" to the book (other than the fact that Elmo appears on every page) to make it hang together. Example: "Elmo can make lots of noisey noise. Wheeee! And so can an octopus!" (Used to illustrate N and O) It's just... well, boring, and it all seems forced.

I'm still searching for a good alphabet book that can help my son easily recognize letters and sounds. This one is definitely not it.

  3. My daughter loves this Elmo book with all the words that begin with the letters of the alphabet. Great learning tool for a toddler.

My only complaint is the pages of the book are thin and tear easily.

  4. My 4 year old daughters are really enjoying this little book. They really relate to Elmo and the book is easy to read. They are already reciting a lot of it from memory.

  5. This is a soft cover book only good for pictures of Elmo. It does not have the letters displayed in bold fonts for children to learn. The cover is very misleading.

  1. This book is about a poor family in New York. It is what Charlotte Mason referred to as a "living" book. When I read this book to my children, they were 6 and 7 years of age. They were spellbound and I wound up reading it in one sitting because they "begged" me to keep going! There is also a neat craft idea for making a Christmas star.

  2. When my sisters and I were small children, my mother began to read us this story just before Christmas. We heard it read aloud each year as we grew up, and it became an important and special part of our holiday celebration. Now as a middle school teacher, I read this book to my students each December. It's a charming (and true!) tale of a loving family who experience a very special holiday. Simple but sincere, heartwarming and gentle, Lion in the Box is a book to treasure. Sharing this story each year is a wonderful tradition to start in your own family.

  1. I just read a library copy to my 3 1/2 yr. old. The concept is good but the story progression, sentence structure and abuse of the comma did not make it enjoyable to read. Two other disappointments: 1) some of the Mom's responses to her children; and 2) the word "hate" used in place of "I don't like" by the children in the story. The illustrations are beautiful. Nancy Carpenter is very talented and she is the reason I selected the book. Other books we have read illustrated by Nancy Carpenter, Rapunzel, Little Red, Can You Dance Dalia? and Loud Emily.
