  1. The book is loaded with stupid projects such as a wood pin you attach to your shirt or jacket. The bench on the front of the cover is why I bought the book. I didn't realize the legs were not solid. Also the top is made of slats. Construction methods are shoddy as well.
The rest of the projects are, for example : name plaque, lawn sign, picture frame, candle holder, miniature plant holder, miniature adirondack chair, small tote, decorative wood trinkets. Not to be entirely negative, there is a sofa table (one of those that you put behind the couch), a country harvest table (one of the best projects) and a chair that must have leather cushions the exact size of the chair. This is the first book that I have EVER returned.

  1. This is a fine book by any standards. But for my personal needs it has to fall into the category of purely inspirational rather than practical. The designs and techniques shown here are great...if you are an expierenced woodworker. For someone like my self, who has no history of working in wood, I could only look at the wonderful works of art here and dream. I guess what I am trying to say is that this is not a book for the beginner, or at least for one who wants to know how to get started. The projects featured in this work are far and above anything I will ever be able to turn out. On the other hand, the book, in a wonderful way, shows just what can be done with this art form, ergo, the inspiration. I feel if you are already highly skilled, then this work would be quite useful. If you are a beginner, you probably should look elsewhere.

1 comments about Toolchest.
  1. Toolchest was the first book I read on the art of woodworking. It is still the as fresh and interesting as it was then. Toolchest appears to be simple enough to be placed in the childrens book section. Don't let this fool you. While it does deal only with the basics of woodworking, it reveals what is wonderous about the ancient art. A masterpiece in wood results from just you, a piece of wood, and a few simple tools. Another point worth mentioning is the nice artwork which accompanies the text. It is fine in both detail, and direction, giving the reader a greater appreciation for the subject matter than a photograph could. All in all, this is a witty, truthful, basic and beautiful book.

3 comments about The Home Workshop Planner: A Guide to Planning, Setting Up, Equipping, and Using Your Own Home Workshop (Better Homes and Gardens Wood).
  1. Not only is this the best book on planning a home woodworking shop I've found, it's also one of the best how-to books I've read in general. It's geared toward the person who doesn't have a clear picture of space layout, tool purchasing, maintenance, and workshop use. With an interview and description of THE Master Carpenter, Norm Abram, it opens a Pandora's Box for the aspiring or beginning woodworker. The book contains detailed samples of workshops for different stages of woodworker, from beginner to professional. It also lists suggested tool purchases for each stage with example costs and advancement from mid-line to professional quality tools. Several helpful build-it-yourself shop aids are also described.

If you're just starting out and are looking for a book which will guide you through the bewildering task of laying out, stocking, maintaining, and using a home workshop, this is the book for you.

Excuse me, but I think I hear my miter saw calling me...

  2. The book takes a novice from zero knowledge about what to buy to the professional and what the author feels he or she should have in their arsenal of tools. it does not go into how to use them nor does it spend a lot of time on projects (a few shop projects are included). But it does give the beginner or novice/hobbyist the necessary information to buy the right tool. use it as a guide and not the authoritative word. overall it was helpful but all those sears craftsman products in it makes me wonder about the author whose shop on the cover has not one sears tool in it.

3 comments about Planes and Chisels (Fine Woodworking On).
  1. This book by Fine Woodworking is focused more on planes than chisels. Most articles deal with handplanes and how to tune them for use. There are many articles on sharpening but using diamond stones or sandpaper on glass were not included, probably because of the books age. Overall this is a good book for someone wanting to learn about bench planes of different types and basic chisel use. An updated edition including recent developments in the resurrgence of hand planes and traditional methods would help this book.

  2. This book presents a lot of interesting information on planes and on various methods of sharpening cutting edges. Despite the title there is not much on chisels here. There is a lot on out-of-the-way types of planes and also a lot on different views on sharpening, including a report of a direct comparison between sharpening devices, like vertical and horizontal rotary devices, wet and dry (vertical) rotary devices, etc. Also stones, natural and artificial, Japanese and American. The last two pages present an, at the time of publishing, unorthodox way of sharpening which looks very interesting, particularly for turners. As the other review says this book no longer presents the very latest in technology, but it is not true that it has fallen very far behind the times, as yet.

  3. The information on chisels is brief but complete as to angles metal and
how to sharpen,it get better when you get to Planes design of and angles of blade I have bought this book to make my own Planes and it gives all the information to do just that. This is a good first book for the new person in wood working and all the woodworking books are great for that.
I have just added another book to my collection and I am happy with the information inside..
