1 comments about American Indian Basketry.
  1. If you are interested in native American basketry, this book will be part of the backbone of your library. Originally published in 1904 as two volumes, when Dover published it, they were bound as one. As a Dover publication, it is, of course, an excellent value--I only wish it were available in hardcover. It has 460 wonderful old photographs and clear line drawings. Mr. Mason was a product of his times and his writing unfortunately reflects an often maddening white male superiority, however his scholarship and clear admiration of the craft, the baskets and their makers mitigates that fault. A must-have book.

1 comments about Vertical Loom: Principals and Construction.
  1. I found this book at just the right time in my weaving career! I have been weaving rag rugs for several years and want to move into tapestry weaving. I really wanted to use a vertical loom rather than a floor loom for this, and since I cannot afford an expensive loom at this time I have been looking and looking for plans for my husband to build a vertical loom for me.

This book has EXACTLY what we have been looking for. It gives precise measurements and supplies needed for a whole range of sizes. (I wanted a loom to be able to hold a large tapestry, not just a small table loom.) The drawings are easy to read and very accessible.

The book also is very informative in its description of the technology, if you will, of weaving on this type of vertical loom. (Which the author says is used not only with tapestry weaving, but also with lace making.) I have learned much about different heddle techniques and warping techniques.

I am not sure the book would be as accessible for a true beginner. As I said, I have some weaving experience. I did have to really concentrate and focus to get the information. My husband is very mechanically oriented and he understood the drawings very easily. He was very impressed with them. He did have to explain some of the things to me before I could understand. So, it may not be for the mechanically challenged or novice weaver. However, it is perfect for me! I can't wait to get going!

5 comments about Beadweaving: New Needle Techniques & Original Designs.
  1. This is basically a project book, with only brief explanations of the author's beadwork techniques. Since the book reviews emphasized the innovative aspects of her work, I was somewhat disappointed to see how little creative exploration was actually presented.

Unfortunately, the projects themselves aren't to my taste. But that's not a criticism -- just an observation of personal preferences.

  2. This is an incredible book with fabulous pictures and inspiration. Highly recommend for any beader.

  3. I have been beading for more years than I care to admit, and I also teach beading. Of my extensive bead book collection, I rate this one at the bottom! The cover is very nice, which drew me in, in addition to the fact that there are few good books on bead embroidery. I hoped this book would fill the gap, but the content is seriously lacking. Not only is it not innovative,as advertised, but the instructions leave large holes. I'd say, go back to the drawing board. An illustration of a process really does require clear words to go with it. The problem begins in chapter one and does not get much better as the author continues on.

  4. This book give you a nice idea of how to make beedweaving, but the designs its made there is not useful and i was thinking after i make it what did i do with it, I give itto my friend and I dont like the things maded in this book, I think you could find another book with more creative things.

  5. I like this book for the varied concepts and color combinations chosen for the numerous projects. I do not like some of the techniques described as they do not always seem to be the best for the form achieved. I find that there are better ways to bead the cylindrical items than the one used in this book. Otherwise most projects are tasteful. Most designs will satisfy the traditional minded.

1 comments about Lao Textiles and Traditions (Images of Asia).
  1. This little book is a great primer for the wonderful world of Lao textiles. It gives you a background to the various Lao communities, explains what sort of textiles are woven and how they are used in daily and ritual life. There is also a basic guide to the meanings of various designs that are commonly found in these weavings.

The hand woven textiles of Laos are intricate and gorgeous displaying a wide variety of technique from ikat to supplementry weft weaving that gives the impression of embroidery. They are made in coarse cottons through to gorgeous silks - mostly on home looms by women in villages. That these wonderful textiles are still being made today is in some ways a minor miracle and their revival in recent times is something we should all be glad of.

The middle section of this book contains colour photographs which give you a good feel for some of the range available in this textile work. While this book is not the last word on Lao textiles is a fantastic introduction to a sometimes under-rated art form.

If you enjoy hand woven textiles an excursion into the world of Lao textiles is very worthwhile and rewarding and here is a good place to start to get a feel for their beauty.
