  1. This is a very good book, because it has very good explanations, and also it has a lot of images and illustrations, and you can understand it better, you can play better because with this book you know how to play, and they tell you tips so you can play better.

  4. I'm not thrilled with the book, but so far as I know, its the only book available for Carmageddon II.

I noticed Carmageddon 2 has FAR better reviews than Carmageddon 3. I think Carmageddon 2 is a good game. Carmageddon 2 is one of the only games I've ever played in my life.

It was very hard to learn for me. Some things about games and computers that I now take for granted had to be discovered by tedious trial and error. I'm no great shakes at this game, a lot of times I go back to previous levels, just to play around and create mayhem. Its a good game.

In book's beginning, lotsa pages are wasted on pics of the available cars. While I'm not that good at the game, I know the cars that are available to buy. The book actually lists some vehicles that u can supposedly buy -but some of them aren't even in Carmageddon!

They give some cool ideas for strategies. But no battle plan survives unexpected when facing the enemy. U may be forced off course if too many other drivers try to zero in on u.

Carmageddon 2 is a cool game in the sense that there is much to explore off the course. Try taking different turns, going places just for the heck of it. U'll discover a lot of stuff that'll get u big points. U'd never have known that if u hadn't done independent exploration. (and this book might help, too)

I actually played Carmageddon 2 with a game pad for a long time, til I got a steering wheel.

I know the game runs under WinME. This is a very old game, it must have been released in the days of Win98. Don't know if it runs under XP.

Bought the game from Amazon when it was heavily discounted (cause it was an old game).

I have maybe 10 games, most of which I've barely touched. Carmageddon seems to me to be a game that u should hold on to.

I think the game gets a bit crash prone at the higher levels. Somewhere around level 8 or 9, its a touch crashy and also, the nature of the game changes. U'd better have saved a lot of points, because u'll need a BIG vehicle. The old tricks of destroying enemies start to fall flat at these higher levels. No matter what u do, u can't destroy the other huge vehicles with a little car.

I gave up and began the game all over, using some of the tricks from the book. I don't care, I like the game. Like the book sez, u can replay levels to get lotsa extra points. (this book mentions that tip)

Also, u'll find that at the higher levels, u'd better buy a BIG vehicle, the choice of car duznt make that much difference at lower levels. Just keep the red one they give u-and buy all the armor, offensive and power u can for the car. Otherwise, save your points for a later level where u'll need to buy more expensive and larger vehicles.

The on-disk documentation for Carmageddon won't explain how the missions are won. Get explanations off the net and/or this book.

I guess, if u're like me and want to stick with an old favorite, u may as well buy this book. I've learned a few things from it. I had already learned a lot from experimentation.

Since, for me, this game has long term potential, I say spend a few bucks and get a few little tricks that u might not figure out on your own. Carmagedon is a rich game, with lots of stuff to explore. U might not catch it all on your own.

Buy the book if u think like I do. I think it would have been even better had I bought it a few years ago.

  1. After I finally found this guide in the stores, I instantly got it. When I started up a new game later that day, I easily fought my way through the first two people on the Yugi side with this guide as a reference. But now that I'm on the third person, this guide isn't much of a help. I haven't finished this game yet, and I'd really like too! (I have yet to actually finish a Yu-Gi-Oh game).

All-in-all, this is a decent guide, but it should give you more information, that's why I'm giving it simply 4 stars. Get this guide if you are having problems with the game, and even if you aren't!

5 comments about Gran Turismo 4 (Prima Official Game Guide).
  1. Whoever wrote this book, the group that did, should be made to do it over again! I'm not kidding, it is this horrible. I've been a gamer, for a very long time and know what I'm doing; not saying I'm the best or anything like that, but I know when I see a crap strategy guide.

This guide is only a guide pertinent towards real life racing and not the game, as it speaks volumes on real technique and real cars, while neglecting the fact that we aren't driving real cars (while close), but a driving simulator game! I want to know (see), like the previous guides each and every task and how to beat them; for instance, there is not one good piece of info on the driving missions, nor for any of the races. The license section, on how to aquire them is great, but still lacking. Check out the old Verus game guides, they did the last Gran Turismo guide, and you won't find nearly any complaints towards it... Geezz, if we wanted a thick collectible Gran Turismo book we could have waited and gone to Ebay and gotten it cheaper. This book is a ripp off for what you get, do not buy it, if you do you'll know why I said don't. Make your own strategy or look one up online, their are plenty of legitimate online strategies, so dig in. Take care and all the best to you...

  2. If what you want is a handy reference for some cars, an index of all cars that can be unlocked, and something very light to thumb through at your leisure, buy this book.

If what you want is what is advertised on the book -- "The best racing lines for all tracks" "Expert racing lessons to help you dust your competition" -- you'll be sorely disappointed.

The closest they come to including "racing lines" is brief mentions of a fraction of the turns on each track. Particularly bad is the Nurburgring Nordschleife coverage. Here's an example of how they describe one vast section of the course: "The third section of the course is also highly technical, with many difficult chicanes and hairpins connected to one another." That's all they say for what is approximately 3 to 4 miles of track.

The "expert lessons" appear to be completely missing. They do mention the license exams, but the text they include for each one might almost be as useful as the in-game text. They mention the driving missions, but only that they exist -- there are no tips for them here.

I strongly recommend utilizing online resources instead of this book.

  3. This book is simply not worth buying. I bought this book hoping for check times for gold medals in license tests, racing lines, and strategies for tuning, etc.

This book has none of this. It's basically a history of all the car companies in the game, with listings of all of the cars available, and an unlock list.

Go to (...)and don't waste your time with this book.

  4. This is a completely useless strategy guide. Why? Because Gran Turismo is a racing game. What can a guide teach you that you can't possibly learn by playing the game. Now, I know what you're thinking: Why am I reviewing this if I think it's useless. Because I wasted my money on it, that's why, and I'm going to bash into the ground and attempt to scare others from wasting their money as well.

    Pros and Cons:
+ Pages 292-295, which contains a list of the cars you win racing certain events.

    - It "describes" driving techniques. How many have ever passed a driving test by only reading the driving manual and never actually getting behind the wheel?

    - It analyzes car manufacturers, which can be fun, but it's also something that's been found in car magazines throughout the world.

    - It gives you maps of the race course and the key turning points, once again "describing" how to take the turns.

    - The guide has a kind of "extras" section, that actually bores us with the past Gran Turismo titles and how they affected the industry. We know how it has affected the industry, because their have been FOUR titles.

    - Then, it tries to squeeze money from you by advertising, in a section all its own by the way, other GT items (hats, DVDs, a steering wheel). This wouldn't have bothered me had they placed it at the back of the book but it's closer to the middle.

    - Finally, it has all the websites of all the car manufacturers, another way of shamelessly advertising things most of us can't afford.

Some of you may think that my "cons" are actually pros, but when you think about it, a strategy guide (which they cleverly titled "Game Guide") is supposed to aid you in the game. The cons listed are all the things I thought didn't help me. As you can see, I only liked four pages. Needless to say, I don't recommend this guide. You can learn more by actually experiencing the game than reading this guide.

  5. The book did not give you tips on the special missions or much on car setup. The only thing of use was the car and prize check off list, but there is no information on Peugeot's Cars anywhere in the book.

  1. Although full of incredible images and some fun facts, the handbook is only alright. I was looking for another STAR WARS TECHNICAL MANUAL but I was disappointed by the 'glossy' workmanship inside. Not to say this isn't a good read for WC fans! Many of the areas, like Blair and Maniac's academy forms and the Deck Officer's 21 Rules and Regs is actually quiet fun and Tolwyn's reviews of officers are interesting. A lot of the book could be made better, like the opening interview with Sir Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn or the layout of the Tiger's Claw. Over all, a disappointing but nessessary book for all WC fans.

  2. FINALLY! Wing Commander finally gets a technical book like the ones in the Star Wars universe. This book is full of rich detail. The pictures are nice, and the extra's like Jump Point physics and analysis of Pilgrim Brain Wave patterns were very nice. McCubbin did a wonderful job with this book

  3. Yes inded it is. It's a great manual with a lot of facts and scifi- stuff. It has a lot of great illustrations and the art work is god. But there is one thing that bugt me though. Only half the book is in color, the rest is black and white. Not that it matters but I just thought that I would bring it up. Every Sci-fi and Wing Commander fan should have one. The best thing about the book(manual) is that you get the background information on the Pilgrim Conflict from the movie, Theres also included a boarding protocol for marines, and technical information of their weapons and equipment. another thing which can be a little anoying is that theres only technical information about the ships and fighters from the movie. I would have liked them to have included some of the other confed. ships from the 3rd and 4th installment of the CD.rom games. All in All this book is great I wouldn't miss it for the world, there is tons of cool stuff in it which I do not wan't to reveal to spoil your fun. Now, go buy the book. A tip: Buy the movie soundtrack, sit down on your favorite cauch, open a can of soda relax and read the book(manual). Alvin from Denmark

  4. My god... I have played to games, and i have read the books. The only good thing about the book is that it sticks to the movie. But the problem with that is that the movie sucked equally.

The facts are wrong and corny. I do not recommend reading the book or seeing the movie even if you arent a Wing-Commander fan If you are a Wing-Commander fan: Then you'll hate this movie and book because...well, its all wrong. Blair was an orphan, and his mother lived. There were no pilgrims! Jesus!

If you are not a WC fan: You'll think this was made for kiddies under 8....

  5. Lets clear one thing up. This book is canon in regards to the Wing Commander movie. NOT the video games. The two are completely different franchises so if you're looking for some official writings based on the games you will have to look further. On the other hand if you are looking for the same in regards to the movie you hit the jackpot. This book is very comprehensive all things considered. It's even comprehensive enough to make you look at the movie with a different perspective.

While this book doesn't really rival other movie-manuals like the Colonial Marines Technical Manual it goes into a LOT more detail than you might expect. You get a comprehensive history written in this book that explains all that Pilgram stuff that was on the movie. It also covers the history of the Kilrathi war as well as the customs of that race. You also get officer profiles of all the major characters in the movie.

The technical side of things is okay, but not perfect. You have some decent info on the fighter ships and carriers from both sides of the war, but I wished they went further. For instance there are deck plans for the Tiger's Claw, however it's a VERY basic plan and there's not much information added from there. Also it would be nice to know things like how powerful are the main guns on a Rapier? How effective are meson shields. Stuff like that. What I did like was the fact they put some detail on little things like the combat armor the marines wear and the weapons they used.

The one thing that really impresses me on this book is the level of detail that was put into the explanation of the faster than light technology in the movie (jump points and the drives that ships use to access them). This includes the history of the science and technology. For any of you sci-fi science nuts this stuff is really interesting.

All in all this is a very worthwhile book. As a matter of fact I recommend reading this book before seeing the movie if you can. The book clears up a lot of things that can be either vague or uninteresting for the layman. This book especially clears up the whole "Pilgrim War" issue they mention in the movie. Pick up this book if you can get it cheap. It would be well worth it.

5 comments about Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (Prima Official Game Guide).
  1. This is not a bad guide. I wish it had a bit more detail in terms of multi-player and skirmish strategies. A lot of this guide focuses in the campaign. Normally, that would be OK, but since the campaign in this game is so short and basically a no-brainer, I would have appreciated more skirmish and multi-player info.

None of that is the author's fault however. It just results in a strategy guide that is OK, but not crucial. Buy it if you really like to play the game and plan to play it a lot. Otherwise, you can probably do without this guide.

  2. This book is absolutely useless. The only worthwhile hint in the entire book is to program specific hotkeys to certain squads to access them quickly. This is a good hint, too bad the book doesn't tell you HOW to program said hotkeys.

(Hot keys are also not explained in the Dawn of War manual, either.)

I finally learned the Zen art of hot-key programming from my brother, an ubergamer who figured it out because DoW is similar to another game he played, and I will now go the extra mile and share the secret knowledge Prima does not. (Save your money, the book is worthless!)

With the squad, or building, or whatever you want to access the hot-key with currently selected, hold the CTRL button down and then press a number. That number key will then be the hot-key for that squad or building. For example, you select the Marine Chapel Barracks, and hold down CTRL, then the "1" key. From now on, if you press "1" once, you'll get the menu for the Barracks, pressing it twice will center your map on the building itself. Voila, more strategy advice than the entire Prima guide.

  3. Okay, if you play computer games, you have more than likely have used a Prima Guide before. The reason why I bought this one was because the original instuctions on Dawn of War did not go too much into detail about the units and not much explanation of the tech tree which in my opinion, is a little trickier than the average RTS.

The basics of this guide are a walkthough portion for the single player campaign which I only half-assed used for the reason that I don't like to spoil it too much. After finishing, I would review the guide and maybe see something I didn't see before.

There is alot more detail about the units and buildings so you can figure what will be useful for your style of play and what won't.

The best thing about the guide is the maps for when you decide to do single or multiplayer skirmishes. It tells you what style of play they are good for and also they are the only source to find out about the details like how many strategic points, critical locations and relics there are. You can't even find that on the game until you are in the mists of playing it.

Over all, a good basic guide. But like I said, if you have bought a Prima Official Game Guide before, you should know what to expect.

  4. If you like the 3rd person looking down view on your war games... (and I do) this game will provide you alot of entertainment.

over all it is just another revamp of the starcraft / war craft era... If you liked them yuou will like this

  5. Nothing exceptional but not bad either. The walkthrough gives detail explanations on tactics, the type of units you should produce and how you load them out. The walkthrough also provides on how to organize your forces using the control and number keys so I take exception to what an earlier reveiwer said. The maps were helpful and the chapters on the different races was useful. I found the information organized logically and easy to find. All and all pretty much what you would expect.

  1. This is one of the worst strategy guides Prima has put out in recent memory. The book offers no insight into the different races and does not even aknowledge the unique units produced by the Vinci. There are no tables, no charts, and no tips. No multiplayer tips. You would be better off going onto the website. Don't waste your money.

  2. Generally good information on missions and storyline, though would have preferred more in-depth strategy tips.
