5 comments about Rome: Total War (Prima Official Game Guide).
- This guide is rather disappointing. It is not a strategy guide as much as it is a manual. The chapters it has on battle maps and campaign maps brovide little information that isn't available in the game's manual. The strategy guide does have a nice catalog of all units and buildings, which is helpful.
I had hoped this guide would provide a lot of information on how to play the game and get through certain situations. It is nice to know what a certain unit does and what its exact statistics are, but before I am interested in that, I would like some basic information on how to fight a battle. Knowing that fire arrows make the ememy peer their pants is interesting, but it would be nice to know when to use them, when not to use them, how accurate they are compared to regular arrows and such.
There are many examples that need explaining on the campaign map too. What can I do to make sure my family tree grows? If I do not have enough family members to put a governor in every town and a general in every army, is it better to have towns without governors or armies without a leader?
None of these questions are answered here. The closest this guide comes to really guiding the reader is in the section about historical battles (although those chapters are very short). Overall, I recommend you go to www.totalwar.org and ignore this guide.
- Why bother buying this guide !
when playing the game
you have two Roman advice guides to help you.
- First of all I'd like to point out that most people who play this game and give it poor reviews do not have enough patiences or common sense required to play a game like this. For Example, as another reviewer stated,
"The back cover of the book says "Fully Detailed Campaign Map". Try and find it in the book! What they meant by this was they threw a 7 x 4.5 inch black and white picture of the campaign map on the last page!! The image has terrible contrast and it's black and white and really small. You cant even make out city names that's how bad it is. Considering the game comes with a 1 1/2 foot by 1 foot fold out color map what the heck good is this? More than that the total war website has a province profile in flash that is FREE."
Very good, the back says that there is a "Fully Detailed Campaign Map".... IN THE GAME!!! it means that the campaign map in the game is fully detailed. The campaigns are awesome in general but that is a different subject altogether.
I'd like to make the point that never in these types of strategy games or in the Total War series did I require a game guide, I have never bought one for any game as a matter of fact. These types of games simply require common sense and a slight historical knowledge.
Ok, while this game may be immense in the hard drive space that it requires it more than delivers as an incredible RTS game. The graphics and displays are beautiful as you march grand armies of Greek Hoplites, Roman Chariots, Egyptian archers, and War Elephants across incredibly detailed and vast maps. In addition each and every solider in your army is fully and individually controlled by the computer. In other words, there is no mass control as in other games, (Medieval: Total War for example), an entire unit acts as one and in Rome: Total War there is as individual "personality" to each individual of your troops.
The graphics are also incredible and yes they do require much of your computers capabilities, so I'd like to address the issue of technical issues. If you are not prepared to stop downloading pornography or music while you play then do not buy the game. This game can be incredible but only if you take an hour or so (if your like me and need to take breaks cause of attention span issues) to just use your computer for this game. I'll admit that multiple times I have been sucked into the game only to end up playing for hours and neglecting many other tasks that required my attention.
Another credit to this game is the historical accuracy of the in game units. All of the units are taken directly from the historical libraries of the world and are fairly incredible to look at. (there is some embelishment in some of the units.)
If you are worried about not enjoying the game head over to the Total War website and download the demo. www.totalwar.com

Look, its a great game, thats a fact.
- This is a complete waste of time, and a way to get easy cash from the producers and distributors of this game.
I bet with everyone that the guy who gave it 5 stars probably is one of CA (Creative Assembly) cursed staff. Just look at the way he quoted magazines "Oh wonderful graphics" "Best game ever" bla bla bla and all the crap you can wonder.
Of course, the magazines players and testers come to fall in the eyecandy category, and when they see good graphics they categorize it like the game of the century. Total Disappointment.
I hope you learned from this reviem.
- Don't waste your money on this guide, it's full of fluff, needless information, and false advertising. The back of the guide gives five bulleted statements, intended to make you want to buy Prima's offering:
* FULLY DETAILED CAMPAIGN MAP
* IMPERIAL CAMPAIGN TIPS AND STRATEGIES
* BATTLEFIELD TIPS AND STRATEGIES
* VALUABLE UNIT AND STRUCTURE STATISTICS FOR ALL FACTIONS
* WINNING TIPS AND STRATEGIES FOR HISTORICAL BATTLES
The first statement (despite claims to the contrary in another review) is misleading. It is obvious from the context that the statement is talking about the guide and not the game. That's what the back cover in a case like this is suppose to be, an advertisement for the information inside! Sometimes they give summary blurbs, sometimes bulleted information, but whatever the case, it is talking about the guide in your hand, not the game in your computer. But the guide most certainly does NOT have a "Fully Detailed Campaign Map". As others have pointed out, the game itself comes with a color map that measures 12 by 18 inches; and all that is in the guide is a blurry, very small, 7 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch map in black and white. Ironically the map on the back cover of the guide (the part you can see anyway), which is not meant to give information so much as serve as part of the advertisement, is actually a lot CLEARER than the map in the actual guide. The real kicker is that they put "Fully Detailed Campaign Map" first in the order, and in a much larger font, than the other bulleted statements. As though this were the guide's main selling point! Incredible.
The next statement said "Imperial Campaign Tips and Strategies". As others have said, though, you will be hard-pressed to find any of this in the actual guide. Real tips and strategies would have been information like:
"Besides a penalty for having a different culture, the further a conquered city is from your capital the more unhappy the citizens will be. Therefore, if you have a family member who has attributes which help him keep public order, place him in this type of large, foreign city."
Instead, what we get is a lot of repeating what the manual said, with some elementary additions that most people who play strategy games would know anyway. And in a great game like Rome, you can't even give them the benefit of the doubt by saying that maybe the info is for people new to strategy games. Rome gives all the information necessary for new people to know what to do in situations like that. For example, in a case like public disorder, you can right-click on your buildings and see exactly how much they can improve the order, you can easily change the taxes and instantaneously see the difference it makes on happiness, and you can go to the city's details and find out the exact reasons for unhappiness in the city. It even tells you how much of a problem each factor is causing, like saying "Squalor: 20%; Culture Penalty: 50%; etc." Now, a REAL tip would have been to explain why, for example, having 80 soldiers can sometimes have the same effect on unrest as having 160 soldiers. Is the ability of a garrison to pacify the people based on the "tier" the city is on, the population, the types of soldiers, a mix of factors, or what?
The third statement is: "Battlefield Tips and Strategies". This is similar to what I said about about the imperial tips, but Prima is a little better here. Some of the strategies, while simplistic, are at least good to repeat. There is also some good information here, like the explaining of the different formations, or listing all the factors that can effect troop morale, but this good content unfortunately does not go on for very long. They do have something called "Ten Tips For Victory," which gives ten short statements about good strategy. While the tips aren't anything particularly deep and are pretty basic (stategically speaking), it is at least an attempt. If only they would have put more of an effort to going outside of Instruction Guide mode more often in other areas, I might have given the guide two stars.
The fourth bulleted statement said: "Valuable Unit and Structure Statistics For All Factions". I'll first say that I was somewhat let down that they didn't have a chart with all the unit information on it. They spend over fifty pages giving information about the units, but none of it is new. It is basically the same info that the game itself gives you by simply right-clicking on a unit. So in the end, all this information in the guide comes off as nothing more than filler. If the information had been compiled into a chart, it at least could have served the purpose of being a quick reference when comparing the strenths and weaknesses of various units. For example, you might be in the middle of a battle, and have several units with axes (which are good against armor), so you would want to know the status of the armor on various enemy units so as to determine who best to attack next; a graph could have given this information to you within seconds. But as it is, you are forced to first find the right faction (they are not really set apart very well), and then look up each unit's armor one by one.
This fourth statement is also misleading. It does NOT have structure statistics for all factions, as it claims. In fact, it has structure statistics for only 11 of the 19 factions, with the rationale being that you can't play the other 8 factions. Well, first, this is only half true because you can conquer a foreign city and therefore will take over their buildings. So knowing the statistics of their buildings (even if you can't start a game as that faction) could still be relevant. Of course, you could just right-click on the building to get it's statistics, but then the same argument would make almost ALL the information in this book superfluous as it's almost all in the game. This is not to say that a guide has no purpose at all. One of the few things that a guide can provide is a way of comparing and contrasting different buildings, units, etc.; unfortunately Prima didn't seem to want to go that route.
Whatever the case may be, in the end, Prima decided to exclude the structure statistics for 8 factions, so it is misleading to say that the guide contains "Valuable unit and structure statistics for all factions". They should have inserted the word "playable": they have statistics for all playable factions.
The last bulleted statement said that the guide contained "Winning Tips and Strategies For Historical Battles," and it is only in this area that the guide rises even to an acceptable level. Unfortunately, it is too little and too late. By the time you get to this section, you have already went through 165 pages of mostly fluff, filler, and information that was in the instruction booklet that came with the game. The sad thing is that even the information that they tried to give is incomplete. They had a section on the unit statistics of barbarian mercenaries, for example, but then left out information about half the mercenary units in the game! There is no mention of Libyan Mercenaries, Samnite Mercenaries, Mercenary Hoplites, Mercenary Peltasts, Barbarian Mercenaries, or other such units.
Rome: Total War is a very good strategy game. It will probably be the game I play most until Age of Empires 3 (and especially Civilization 4) come out later this year or early next year. But a good game does not equate to a good guide (as the other guy seemed to think, for some reason). So my conclusion is that it would be best to skip this game guide and spend your money on something else; Most of the information you need is already in the game, and the rest you can figure out on your own.

- Once again Syngres has put together a top notch team of Lego builders. The robots in here are incredible to say the least. I was amazed to see that CS Soh had a hand in this book as I've been a big fan of his LEGO work on the web for some time. I just finished building all of the robots in the prequel to this book for the Star Wars Dark side lego kit when I saw this become available. These are all top notch robots built by people who know their lego robots. They don't beat around the bush-they give you step by step instructions for buidling these robots. They go one step beyond the first book by giving you alternate building instructions for download. I'm going to use this in my high school robotics class. Top notch.
- This is the perfect compilation set of fun, and challenging projects which can easily be manipulated for your own robotic tastes. The sources of this book are the masters in the field, and do an astounding job sharing their wealth of knowledge.
- We got our son a new Mindstorm for Christmas - the NXT. This book was designed for the previous generation of the Mindstorm, so was of no use to us. The description on-line was not clear to us that we were wasting our money.

5 comments about Lineage II: The Chaotic Chronicle (Prima's Official Strategy Guide).
- I purchased this guide recently, and don't feel I got my money's worth. It is a valuable tool, yet most of the information contained within is already listed on websites like wwww.l2orphus.com. There are multiple typing errors - some paragraphs aren't even complete, and it appears whole sections are missing, - like in the Dark elf section they don't even discuss the Shillen Knights in depth like they do the rest of the other class choices. To correct; it isn't discussed at all. Though overall I guess these details could be labeled minor - I still don't think this is worth the money so look around before you buy it I am sure you will be able to find the same information online, for free.
- This book has some general tips and information. there is no in depth information concerning quests, maps, or anything that is really useful in playing the game. I wouldnt waste my money on it if i had to do over again.
- This is my first review on Amazon. That aside, let me get this clear:
I normally am very impressed with Prima's Strategy guides.
That out of the way, this book is horrible. A joke. A mockery. Entire paragraphs are paraphrased OR copied word for word from one class to another! They don't EVEN change a word to make it more personalized. This is not some general comment. I can back it up with specific references if need be.
Also, it contradicts itself very very often. For example, it may say that a class exceeds in several areas, specifically its speed, attack speed, and magic resist. However, in the next paragraph, it will mention, "however keep in mind that do to your slow run speed you should avoid..." Uhh..durr....
Sentences often trail to an end mid-statment. The dwarves class tips are a joke, there are not even any tips on the Elf Wizard, and at LEAST 3 other classes that I cannot recall the names of at the moment but I know they are missing. All 3 archer classes (Hawkeye, Silver Ranger, and the DE Equivalent) are almost exact copies of one another, with maybe 1 paragraph different.
This book is ONLY good for referencing the lists of skills (which it is superb at) and maps for a few dungeons, but not all! This guide would disgust any mediocre L2 fan, and anyone new to the game will be dissapointed at no maps for any starter town. A lot of mispellings as well. A LOT.
A side note: I understand that most strategy guides for on-line play cannot be expected to be accurate when describing actual strategy for in-game actions. However, this guide does not even hit the target close. The author(s) seem to love referring to different classes with one phrase to sum them up. I.E. Hawk Eye being the best siege archer, the Silver Ranger being the best kiting archer... pretty true in this example, though the difference is miniscule, however the descriptions of many other classes leave much to be desired.
You can definetly tell what classes the author(s) played. Read through the Orc class descriptions and tips. It is full to the brim. Then read the Elf Mystic, Elf Fighter, Dwarf, or pretty much even Dark Elf or Human pages. It is empty and copied and pasted from each other. The Dwarf description is laughable! One paragraph to describe a 40-70 class?!?!
One thing is clear, this book was RUSHED and quality was thrown out the window because of it. Prima editors must have been on vacation for the week.
To sum up, this guide is good for referencing skill lists for the classes. Anything else, and this book is a waste of hard earned adena, err, money.
Thanks
Alan
- I found it very informative. There is definitly more in this guide the Prima Beginner's guide given with the game. I would recommend it.
- I would recommend this stradegy guide to everybody because it has a full description on quest from level 1-50,Items drop from monsters and vice-versa (what monsters drop or what items u can get from monsters)and the %percent ratio of the drop item from monsters. A full spec of skills from 1st profession to the 3rd profession. Maps from starter village to end game maps. You get crafting recipes from no grade items to S grade items. a complete guide of warping directions to towns(very helpful because some town u can only warp to one direction and have to go another town to just warp back).I like the fact that i could see how much an weapon cost from any town and what type of weapon it is and type. The npc guide is superb and it shows every npc on map and stores and warp npcs. The leveling guide is good to. It shows u where to camp out at your level solo or grouping.I can go on and on telling you about this guide but its too detailed for me to speak it all. overall i got my money's worth and you won't get dissapointed of your purchase. I give it a 5 star +++++ .

- The layout for this guide is perfect, with detailed weapon and vehicle sections each separated by class, and the side-missions separated from the main walkthrough. Anything and everything you would want to refer to quickly is easy to find. I haven't been able to find any errors in this guide so far.

1 comments about Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee: Prima's Official Strategy Guide.
- When you think of a strategy guide, you think, "Gives away all the secrets and takes the challenge away from the game." Partly you are right, it does give away all the secrets, yet you are wrong too. You would say that it takes away the challenge, correction: codes do! This book not only helps you but it makes it even more challenging. When you don't know what to do, you think it is challenging to find out what to do. But once you know what to do, it is even more challenging, completing the task. You may find it difficult even to make it across a chasm. I loved this book since it made the game even more challenging. It did give away HELPFUL hints and secrets, yet made it hard to complete the task. Therefore, it does not take away the challenge, it provides a greater challenge: completion!

5 comments about Neverwinter Nights 2 World Editor Guide.
- Despite it's sharp looking cover (the best thing about this book), this is an utterly useless book, containing maybe 3 to 4 hours of basic info that you can get off of the net, in better form and with better screenshots, in the same time. The rest of the book is fluff. BradyGames has never, imho, done a good job with strategy guides and such, but this one takes the cream when it comes to shovelware.
Do yourself a favor - dont buy it. Get the Dont Panic guide off the net, and a lot of useful tutorials scattered around on the vault and on the official forums. You'll be much happier than if you waste time and money with this trash.
- All I can say, is AVOID THIS BOOK. It is nothing like the NWN1 builder's manual. Devoid of all useful content and filled with nothing but worthless interviews, you can quickly tell the authors never used the toolset themselves. So much has changed that even the handful of suggestions they provide are meaningless. Please I beg of you all! Check out the forums, vault and fansites for assistance and leave this dreadful guide out of it!
- not sure why they would waste their time putting this guide together..all the screen shots are to small to read
- The NWN2 toolset is a powerful, yet complicated piece of software. If you work through this book page by page, you will not even open the editor until p. 38! The book is filled with story advise, boiling down to "don't do too much this, or too much of that...and be sure to plan ahead!" and other obvious advice. Where is the documentation on the scripting events? Where is the how to do stuff section? This leaves us all a very steep learning curve with no official help. Don't waist your money, go online for community help!
- This book teaches you nothing about how to use the interface. It is just a guide to start a world. It simply suggests things you need to do to build your own world but tells you nothing. Skip this book unless you don't have any clue whatsoever about the world you want to make, and don't have any idea where to start.

2 comments about Dino Crisis Official Strategy Guide (Brady Games).
- This is the worst game guide book I have ever seen. It is lacking in screen shots, map explanations...everything. The only reason I am giving it one star is because that is the lowest the ratings go. Dino Crisis is a game where you need a little help...and this book offers little. I would suggest going with Prima Publishing...either that or head to Adrenaline Vault...both have much MORE to offer than this waste of money.
- This game guide is okay, but may not be the best according to others. (I never read any of the other Dino Crisis strategy guides) There are some mistakes, which take of a star in the rating like for example, one of the deceased bodies are named 'Mark Doyle' not 'James Doyle.' I don't know where the author found that. And secondly, the second crane game's instructions from the guide are wrong, they don't work. As far as the walkthrough goes, its pretty straight-forward. There are not plenty of screenshots, but there are enough. The author needs to do some more revising and editing in his future books, and the only reason I rated it 4 stars is because of the errors, otherwise, its an okay game guide.

5 comments about Suikoden IV Official Strategy Guide.
- As I sat down to write this review it occurred to me that it is very difficult for the Strategy Guide for a partially flawed RPG to be anything else but flawed. That some of the problems with the game will inevitably wash over into the guide. However, this guide has flaws of its own that should be addressed.
One upon a time, publishers took the creation of strategy guides very seriously. The idea was to produce something that had more depth than the normal walkthrough found online, and led the player into areas of the game that would normally get short shrift if one was simply to play for the ending. Lately though, the guide has become part of the marketing plan, and is often written before the game is even set in stone. That seems to be the case here.
Suikoden IV is a skimpy game. Thus it is no surprise that the 75 pages dedicated to the walkthrough are mostly charts and pictures with a very minimal amount of text. In addition, the writers have the modern knack of not always explaining things in logical order, so that one gets to the end of a sequence only to discover that something important got left out. Since Suikoden IV isn't a complicated game, the guide should have been much more player friendly. Following the walkthrough are 82 pages of short biographies and facts about each of the 108 'stars' of the game. Exactly the same information appears in the walkthrough, so the purpose of this section is to flesh out the guide to some respectable size. The net result is that this is more of a souvenir than a game guide.
There are mistakes in the text as well, although there is nothing so serious as to ruin the game, there are a couple places where the mystery of how to move the game forward is obscure, and Suikoden IV is not a game where being forced to wander unnecessarily is as much of a pleasure as it should be. Another thing that caused this reviewer to have a short fit of pique it is the complete lack of a map of the world ocean. Instead it resorts to vague or no directions. And wandering the waves may be something that Suikiden's creators think is the height of game play, but this player found it exorbitantly tedious. There are better ways to level up than killing a lot of hairballs (and deadly albino roosters).
I would recommend holding off until the regular online walkthrough sources get caught up with the game. Not only is that a cheap alternative, but there is nothing about the production of this guide that makes it particularly satisfying to own. Production and writing are mediocre at best. If it weren't for the fact that the game is just illogical enough to need a walkthrough (marketing ploy, no doubt) I would tell you this time it is better to work it out yourself.
- While not known for in depth guides akin to those offered by other publishers (Prima, to name just one) BradyGames has actualy done a fine job with the guide to Suikoden IV.
The guide is unusualy thick and easy to follow for a BradyGames strategy guide, and includes all of the information anyone would require in order to complete the game, recruit all 108 stars of destiny, find all of the game's secrets, understand all of the games excellent mini-games, and more.
Also included are a comprehensive guide to the trade system, recommendations for the best armor for each character, character-specific rune affinities (which there would be no other way to determine except through tiresome trial and error - multiplied by 108 - without this guide), and thorough maps of every area, including your ship headquarters.
I would have given it five stars if not for the only two flaws I was able to find. There are one or two very minor and very easy to figure out mix-ups with respect to where a certain character is recruited, and the guide lacks a comprehensive guide to the creation of armor, recipees, and accessories. However, that's not much of an inconvenience because the game tells you which materials are required to craft any specific item whenever you look in the available options while speaking to the appropriate craft character(s).
This is an underappreciated yet great guide which just happens to do some things a little differently, to go along with an equaly underappreciated yet great game.
I say of this guide what I said of the game: people simply need to be more patient and thorough. It's an RPG! Do some of the work yourselves! But this guide will make sure you don't have to do any of the work if you read it carefuly and thoroughly.
Thanks again to amazon.com for quick delivery. It arrived the same day as the game. ^_^
- On the up side it's got lots of pretty, out of focus pictures and it's 223 pages long. If you are worried about spoilers you won't find any here. It's just a straight walk through. With a few pages on the mini games an a few on game basics. It also has lists of items, not particularly helpfull. Also not helpfull is the amount space dedicated to the 108 stars. If you play the game you should have no problem finding at least 106 stars. Gau you have to stumble across in a random battle. Snow is really the only one you will have any difficulty finding. Do yourself a favor check online at gamefaqs. You will find better, more detailed walkthroughs that actually have the info you need for free. Don't waste your money here. If you are dead set on buying this waste of paper at least look at a hard copy first before putting down your money.
- This book will help you in all aspects of the game. From recruiting the people to playing the minigames. If you have or are planning on getting Suikoden IV then I highly recommend this book
- The Guide was consise and followed the game every step of the way through it with little confusion..... I will definately purchase another Stategy Guide from Amazon again.....

4 comments about How to Beat Internet Casinos and Poker Rooms.
- Arnold Snyder has some interesting ideas as a gambling writer, but this new offering is a little disappointing.
The author explains how to make money from casino and poker bonuses. Basically, his method involves signing up with an internet casino, taking any bonus they have, then cashing out.
The trouble is that online gambling is illegal in most of the United States. If you could make hundreds of thousands of dollars doing this then it might be worthwhile, but as Snyder seems to admit, getting the money is really hard. Getting money out of an e-casino, judging by the problems Snyder's mentions, is not easy, they are very reluctant to pay up, many simply will take your money knowing you can't take them to court. Some will cheat: it is very easy to write a computer program which fixes the odds against you.
Even with honest e-casinos, you often have to wager eighty times the bonus or more before they will let you keep it!! You would end up losing your money most of the time!! Imagine trying to get a $100 bonus, having to wager $8000, and losing $600 or $700. It does happen!
If you check out the author's website, you see why he is promoting e-casinos-his site gets lots of money from links to internet casinos and he gets a percentage of the losses of people who go through those links. I think that is why he is recommending this type of "advantage play" rather than something respectable like card-counting.
Nevertheless, he does cover some of the common problems you face online in some detail. And, the section on poker is a good basic primer, if you like playing poker.
- In reading the first review posted here, most is misguided, misleading, or just wrong.
However, this statement is completely false:
"The trouble is that online gambling is illegal in most of the United States. "
Online gambling is illegal in the few specific states that have prohibited it (Nevada, New Jersey, and a few others). This definitely does not make up the majority of the US.
I would think that Amazon would have a policy against posting false statements in a review.
- Please do not buy or read this book! I don't want competition. Arnold Snyder is a genious and in my opinion is the foremost gambling expert in the world, and no, I'm not one of "The Entity Known As Avery Cardoza's" shills either. This book is kind of like a sharpa who leads you to a mysterious temple and says "here it is". It doesn't really tell you what "it" is other than to say it could be worth a couple large. It's worth a lot more, and if you don't know why that's certainly not my problem, nor is it Mr. Snyder's for that matter.
- All I ever wanted was a good fair advantage!!!
It teaches the skills neccesary to use the bonus structures of online casinos to your advantagel.
Important Note: This takes discipline that is clearly beyond the reach of a compulsive gambler.
You MUST pick your casinos carefully. You,ABSOLUTELY must size your bets according to the formulas provided or else you are guaranteed to lose all your money before your average advantage can assert itself!!!
By patiently placing many small bets, over a four-month period. I systematically turned $400 startup money into $2500 before the US government shutdown access to most of the better online casinos. I would have done as well in two months if I had not been in the US. Over time I would have had more money to work with and been able to safely place larger bets and it would have snow-balled.
Again, I wasn't lucky, I was PATIENT AND CAREFUL!!!
