5 comments about Metroid? Prime Official Strategy Guide (Official Strategy Guides).
  1. This is supposed to be a cheat book right? I mean, come on if your going to help me finish this game, at least give me coherant pictures of the game. The words don't make any sense either. Come on Doug Walsh!!!

  2. Just because it is a "statagy guide" I would give this one star, but if you are looking for cheats, this is a very good book, it does give away a bit too much though. However, This does diserve four stars, not three, so I'm going to counteract the three. now it's four.

  3. Since it is a guide I have to give it 3 stars. But do you really need a guide??? I have found this out myself, there are 250 missiles in this game which means 50 expansions. I have personally counted the number of rooms to be 115. So if you take the number of rooms in the game(115) divided by(/) The number of missle expansions(50) 115/50 you get 2.3 so in about every other room there is a missle expansions. Of course there is the occasional room that has more than one expansion it so just look everywhere. But the missle expansions make a slight humming noise if you are any where near them. So with that in mind you don't really need a guide because Energy Tanks stick out like a sore thumb and every thing else (wave and ice beam etc.) sets out in the middle of the room in plain sight.and to get 100% in the log book you just have to put on the scan visor and look around in every room. Simple, no??

  4. This isn't a bad selection for a Metroid Prime guide. It has all the essentials of the guide. A complete walkthrough with complete coverage of the game and even tells you about Samus' abilities. I don't like that they don't cover all the cheats. Not only that, but the fact that there is no other Metroid Prime guide out there besides VERSUS BOOKS that will give me an Original Metroid walkthrough! A players guide for that is hard to find. This guide only gives tips to playing Metroid but nothing more.

Also, the guide could've used more screens in a few areas to better detail everything. There is a lot of text in this guide and not enough screens. The layout isn't bad and at least if I need some help I can quickly refer to the guide for advice. I'm still peeved that there isn't any other guide other than VERSUS BOOKS (which is already out of print by the way) that would give me an Original Metroid walkthrough.

What I have to say to this...it's almost impossible to find a guide to Metroid Prime that won't help you through the game. This one is a great find for Metroid Prime but if you can find it, I'd highly recommend the VERSUS guide as opposed to this.

  5. I finally found this guide book! i've been to 5 book stores, 4 game stores, 3 wal-marts, 2 targets, and 3 different online buying sites and ive finally found it! I think this guide book is awsome.

5 comments about Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar.
  1. I guess I was looking for more of the details behind the making of Half-life 2, not just tons of concept art. The artwork is very nicely presented in rich glossy color, but the behind the scenes content isn't there. If you want a better book for looking behind the scenes of a computer game, get the Doom 3 Making Of book instead.

  2. As the review below states this book isn't a behind-the-scenes book or a chronicle of the development of the game nor is it a book discussing the technological merits of Half Life 2 or the Source Engine. Although, it does contain elements of all of the afformentioned parts, it is in the end an art book, but a great one at that with great color, a sturdy build, and a clean uncluttered design.

As a fan of the game myself, I enjoyed seeing all the places and ideas that never made it into the game and the evolution and design of those that did. One area, I feel the book ought to and should have delved into more, was the development and evolution of the plot itself which except in reference to other points was never brought up significantly.

Fans of the Half Life franchise and people interested in the creative development of games will find this book of interest. Others may want to pass on it.

  3. This book reveals what goes on behind-the-scenes at Valve and how the PC / Console game - Half-Life and Half-Life 2 has developed over time.
I am huge Half-Life fan and this book shows how much work and thought goes into producing a genre-defining / award-winning game. One of the highlights for me in the book was how they created the faces of the characters in the game. A wonderful book with a lot of interesting facts. It is also a large book which shows off the artwork to great effect. I am really pleased I bought it and would recommend it to any fan of the game.

  4. This book doesn't really talk much about anything on Source or the people creating the game. It focuses mainly on the process of how different elements in the game came out. With lots of concept and rendered art, it's good to have it around for inspiration or just plain viewing. The book also gives some information on Half-Life 1 and Mods, though these sections still give lots of cool pictures and very little text in comparison.

  5. This book tracks the creation of the Half Life II world from concept art to final product. It is, simply, amazing. Not since a book of concept art for Star Wars (the original 3) have I encountered concept art so clearly building a complete world(s) with as much detail, passion, and creativity. It's been a few years since HL2 hit the market, and we've since seen the introduction of HL Lost Coast, Episode I and Episode II, each of which build and add to the HL2 world in a organized and entertaining way.

I have to believe the continuity throughout each installment of the HL world comes in large part because they laid such a solid foundation in their creation of so much beautiful, detailed concept art. Some of the materials displayed in the book missing from HL2 have shown up in later installments. It seems even years ago they knew where they were headed.

What you will not find in this book are details on the source engine, details on the writing process behind the storyline, or any mention of the delay in production of HL2. This is a book almost exlusively about the visual art present in the game.

No matter where the storyline for HL2 ends, this book will show where it began, and how concepts led to one of the greatest games, and franchises, in PC gaming history. If you're a fan of Half Life 2, buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

  1. This is really a top-notch strategy/game guide that really stands out above all other game guides I have seen in all aspects but especially content, production quality, and value. It truly is a step above the rest and I highly suggest it if you are into game guides.

  2. If you have enjoyed previous Metal Gear games and are ready for the finest of them all, Solid 4 is it. This Limited Edition collection guide is awesome. I tried to play it thru the 1st time without the guide but broke down and used it at the end. This guide is a MUST HAVE!

  3. Very in-depth guide. Shares all the secrets with you. Definitely only use it on your second play through, wouldn't want to ruin the surprise!

  4. Since I am a big fan of this series, I just had to get this limited ed. version. A little pricey but I just wanted it badly. Very satisfied. Lots of info about MGS!!

  5. you can spend hours and hours playing this game and also play in online mode. highly recomended and amazon free shipping is great

5 comments about Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Master the Experience!: Prima Official Game Guide (Prima Official Game Guides).
  1. Although the reviewers of October 14, 2006 rated this FSX Guide very poorly. they have inadvertently strengthened the product by giving a very useful and informative errata to the Guide. We applaud their specificity. We also look forward to an immediate, upgraded corrected FSX Guide from Prim Game Guides.

  2. If it didn't have a short precis of each mission, then it would be completely worthless. I was looking for something more along the lines of one of Andy Herd's FSX reviews found at Flightsim website. And Andy's reviews are free! I paid over $20 for this waste of time and paper. Does the writer, Bart G. Farkas, really think people buying this manual are looking to find out the basics of how a plane stays aloft? We wanted the FSX secrets, the down & dirty stuff that only a collaborator with the programmers could have written. What we got was a 2nd grade book report on the very basics of aviation. Save your money, or review a copy before purchasing. You've been warned.

  3. This book is nothing but fancy advertisement. It only tells you some of the things that Flight Simulator X does. It does not explain how anything is accomplished. Absolute waste of money if you are looking for explanations.

  4. There is almost nothing in this book that is not found in the in-game information. In fact, much of the text here is just copied directly from the game. It may be slightly handy to have the info on your desktop but it's not worth the money.

  5. I don't know who Bart Farkas is and based on this hack job I hope I never do. Did anyone read this "book" much less proofread it before publication? How can one copy text, practically verbatim from the in game help files, and still have so many typos(3-4 to a page), not to mention inaccurate information, incorrect photos, etc.? We should coin a new phrase in the publishing industry, "a bartfarkas job" for when greed and incompetence totally replace writing, useful information and editing .

5 comments about Revised Core Rulebook (Star Wars Roleplaying Game).
  1. Overall, Star Wars RPG is a good system. Its very easy to learn if you've played D20 Modern especially. I wouldn't say that there are any big problems with the game system, but there are certainly a lot of minor problems that would be very confusing/frustrating to someone without a rules lawyer who understands game balancing. Its a fun game for roleplaying, but I'm not sure Wizards had any really competant game-balancing rules lawyers actually look over the system, or maybe they didn't play test it enough. Either way, the system has a number of very minor game unbalancing things that spring up in game from time to time that require a comptetant GM to resolve. Nothing especially terrible, and overall I enjoy the system as do many of the people I play with. So I would recommend the system to any Star Wars and roleplaying enthusiasts (in that order).

The book itself is well-laid out, I can find the info I need with relative ease.

  2. So, When the revised book came out for Star Wars roleplaying I was excited. I thought the first release by wizards of the coast was way to much like D&D. Everything was about the same other then the 3-D Space combat. I was very disapointed when the second one released prior to the Revenge of the Sith, leaving not thought out plot holes regarding the books. Other then that what makes Star Wars so interesting is not the feats, skill, or items but the fact that 'you' can play a Jed i Knight. I believe this is the only thing going for this game and the fact that it is a copy of Dungeons and Dragons. So if you like 3.5 and love Star Wars this game is great but you will find it may limit your game play and I would rather play D&D which invites more world building rather then a fully established universe and plot line. I mean come on if Luke and his gang are already saving the galaxy, what do your characters have to do, Shot some low level stormtroopers and get some data?

  3. I recently came to d20 from AD&D (which I think is HACKMASTER now) and I was often confused when trying to play d20 D&D. I think the old and new ways of resolving saves and ability and skill checks were warring in my mind. I don't know if STAR WARS RPG does a better job of explaining the core rules or if it was just a fresh perspective, but I understand the system much better now. Everything is very clearly spelled out so that it is easy to follow.

STAR WARS RPG is a great adaptation of the STAR WARS universe to d20 roleplaying. It captures the epic combats, both individuals and spaceships. It covers play in the three STAR WARS eras, the Old Republic, the Empire, and the New Republic. All of the well-known species are there, available for play, and player classes that cover scouts, scoundrels, nobles, and jedi of multiple stripes. There are rules governing lightsaber creation, starfighter combat, and interstellar travel. I particularly appreciated that all the rules for play are included, so you do NOT need to buy the D&D PHB separately. There's only one experience table for all classes (a big simplification in my mind). I also really like the replacement of hit points with wound and vitality points. Vitality is like D&D hit points, increasing with level, and cover blows in regular combat. Wound points are determined by your Con. score and remain constant and represent real damage.

I think there are some big issues with the system, though. It isn't clear why anyone would want to play a non-jedi character. The jedi have no real disadvantages and so many overwhelming advantages that the only purpose to non-jedi PCs is to add flavor to a game. As others have noted, the vehicle rules are pretty clunky. Hint: if you need a whole chapter to describe rules for something fast-paced like a chase scene or space combat, a rules-summary at the end is in order. All in all, it's a good game and an interesting alternative to d20 FUTURE.

  4. Unfortunately this product feels a lot like Dungeons & Dragons in space. I guess with the transferability of the d20 rules that was always going to be more or less the case, but there are just elements of this book that don't really feel like they're grounded in the Star Wars universe; instead, they feel like they're bits of the D&D universe that have been altered and retrofitted to make sense in a Star Wars context. The book is even laid out in a similar fashion to the D&D Players' Handbook.

I would have much preferred to see something that was all Star Wars from the ground up. I don't know what licensing arrangements Wizards have with Lucasfilm and the other Star Wars franchises, but seeing crossover from all the various elements of Star Wars to this book would have been preferable.

Putting those disappointments aside, the book presents workable rules to run a Star Wars campaign, and it's quite clear in most of its descriptions and detail.

There's nothing better out there to run a SW campaign (although I haven't read the Saga edition), but it's not hard to imagine something that could be better.

  1. Usually these Prima Guides are on point, but this guide for Naruto: Rise of a Ninja is absolutely useless. It doesnt tell you where to find things or missions, at best it briefly describes the tasks and never explains what to do, how to do something, or where to find things. On one of the most annoying Social Missions which was a race thru the water-fall area for the second time it says, "finish the race and collect reward." Oh really? I didnt know I was supposed to finish a race thanks a lot Prima!!...Dont even bother buying this I wasted my money.
The only positive thing is the multiplayer strategies, other than that if you wanted a walkthrough just find a much better, in depth one online.

2 comments about EverQuest II: Desert of Flame (Prima Official Game Guide).
  1. I got this book a while back, shortly after the "Desert of Flames" expansion was released, and was very pleased with it. This book has many maps, quest walk throughs and lots of general info on the game. With the newest expansion "Kingdom of Sky", SOE made many very huge changes in the game, including dropping lots of quests, character advancement revamp, spell names changes and many other things that almost render this book useless. It's still usefull for some very basic game hints but a newer updated book is needed.

  2. If you've ever been at a loss as to what to do next you'll love this guide. Detailed and informative, you'll be zipping through quests and zones in no time. Very useful.

3 comments about .hack Part 2: Mutation Official Strategy Guide.
  1. This guide is horrible! Okay, the walkthrough is decent, but who needs a walkthrough for this game? Seriously... this game is very straightforward. The best reason to get a guide for it is for weapon, item, and monster lists. This book is very incomplete. While there are at least a hundred new weapons and pieces of armor, this book only lists about fifteen. The monster lists are also very bad, many monsters are missing, and for the ones that ARE listed, the items they drop are not. Bradygames posted updated weapon/armor lists on their website, but they are still missing all of the rare weapons in the game as well as the monster info. A very rushed book, not worth your cash. You're better off just finding a FAQ online.

  2. Given that .hack//MUTATION is a fairly linear game of only moderate complexity, writing a strategy guide must be a special challenge. Many publishers would give into the temptation to fill the guide with great numbers of screen shots and side stories in an effort to make a collectors item out of what would otherwise be a thin effort. For some reason, BradyGames rarely gives into that temptation, and this guide is a classic example of providing all the needed information without burying it in glitz.

They provide a straightforward and complete walkthrough, plenty of information on side quests, and all the usual weapon and monster details. Maps are provided where needed, and, yes, there still is room for plenty of screen shots. They are especially good at detailing the moves necessary to deal with the game's deadly bosses. And grunty races as well - although nothing could save me from my inept reflexes.

I am not sure if a guide is necessary for playing .hack//MUTATION, but if you like them as I do, you will find that this guide delivers everything it should in useful form. There are two more of these still to come in the series though, so you may want to wait until you are legitimately stumped.

  3. I have not recieved this product yet, therefore I cannot review it yet.
