5 comments about Dragon Warrior Monsters: Prima's Official Strategy Guide.
  1. Lots of pics,info.......everything you need to conquer this game is in this guide.

  2. This is one of the greatest games I have ever played for Gameboy Color. I have searched for this book for a little over a year now and I have looked for it on every web site imaginable. I hope that this availability in 9-10 days isn't a dream. This book would make the game even more enjoyable. I hope that Dragon Warrior Monsters makes many more sequels.

  3. This is a game of incredible depth, and without the guide, i would have been lost. After putzing around with monster breeding and training for a bit, i decided to go for the most powerful monster in the game, Darkdrium. I'm still working towards that goal (albiet, not exactly at a break neck pace) and this guide got me there (i'm 3 crosses away from the final mating)... This guide provides valuable insight, breeding charts, and items, although doesn't fully explain some of the spells. All in all, its great.

  4. I got the game after seeing my friend get the game, I was doing fine but I never realized the full potential breeding possibilites for my monster untill I saw this guide. My friend doesn't have the guide anymore but I used it so much I have many of the combinations memorized!

  5. Why in blue-blazes is this guide so friggin expensive? when ti was in stores, it was only around $15..now it's $80?!

4 comments about SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs Combined Assault Signature Series Guide (Bradygames Signature Series).
  1. I am in the marine corps. I am also stationed in Iraq. Given that, I have more than enough credentials to pick apart just about any shooter game. This one is by far the best game I have played this year. The ability to take three of your best buddies, and not just play death match, but play the game from start to finish is by far the premeire feature. Go get the game, build you a fire team of elite friends and play the F'in game

  2. Well since I wrote the Mult-player section of the book...I am going to have to give it Five stars! But even though my part is great, the maps alone make up for it. Those were done by my good friend Richard Hunsinger of Generator Studio's. So if you play SOCOM CA or are even thinking about getting it....this is THE book you need to get.

  3. The only downside is that there nothing about Socom fire team bravo 2.

  4. I bought this book with high hopes.. Some (if not all) of the previous SOCOM guides have received poor reviews, but since this book has the online content written by a supposed SOCOM "clan", I figured they'd do justice to the online playing portion of the game. If you are the type of player who likes SOCOM for the single player mode, or even playing the single player mode with 3 other friends (online, cooperative mode), then this book looks like it will make you very very happy.

If, however, you are like me, and pretty much only play SOCOM to go online ("classic" mode) and join a team of internet folks to kick some tail of the other team online, you will certainly be disappointed. There is little to no information (in my opinion) that you could take from this book for online "classic" play that isn't already in the manual. It does contain maps of the classic mode multiplayer online locations, but they are roughly postage stamp size, and are of no help for use while you are playing (or even when you are not playing! Just too small!) The publisher promised full-size maps on their website, and when I logged in I saw none, and I looked thoroughly.

I just can't recommend this book for anyone unless you play single player only, or cooperative mode, which I'd guess is the vast minority of players.

5 comments about Pokemon (R) Gold/Silver (Pathways to Adventure (R)).
  1. This is a pretty good book all in all. However, there are some mistakes. Like the Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Pidgeot pics someone mentioned in their review. Plus, the author left out my most favorite Pokémon of all--Articuno. Awww.......

  2. The book was okay but it is the story of Ash. They don't take it on the opponets side. They just followed what you are supposed to do on the game. Plus as I have noticed Ash has not lost a battle. Impossible. Everybody always lose at least once.

  3. This book is not good at all! It only tells the story of Ash Ketchum

  4. It is written perfectly. A most helpful guide. It is perfect for the game and out of the game. I really think you should buy it just to look at it is fun. Take it from me, IT IS A VERY HELPFUL BOOK!!

  5. This Pokemon Pathways to Adventure is VERY awesome. I like the book so much that I read it over and over again. My favorite thing about the book is that the author uses lots of detail with his words to describe the Pokemon. If you are a Pokemon lover, you'll like this book!

2 comments about X-COM Terror from the Deep: The Official Strategy Guide (Secrets of the Game Series,).
  1. One of the best game guides I have ever read, this book greatly enhances the Terror from the Deep experience. Rather than being a step-by-step guide that you must follow like a robot without understanding _why_(something that would be almost impossible anyway, due to the nature of the game), this guide provides the detailed information you need to make your _own_ decisions. Statistics on literally everything in the game, along with detailed explanations of how crucial game aspects like movement, combat, and finances _really_ work, make this one a keeper.

  2. David Ellis' second time out writing a X-Com strategy guide brings some mixed results this time around.

The Bad: Around half of the guide is a simply re-print of the manual, with a few added details. Although good, many other sections of the guide were simply too short and did not go into enough depth (who ever heard of devoting only 1 chapter to the tactical part of an X-Com game?).

The Good: Aside from the manual re-print, the entire quality of the material was very very high. Combat tips are right on the mark, and information is presented in an easy to find/read way. The tables are placed in the chapters they relate to, not some "Tables and Reference information" chapter at the end of the guide. It is a very easy to use companion to the game, not diving into meaningless details (for the most part) but not skimming important subjects (for the most part) either.

Bottom line: Mostly Excellent quality, just not enough of it.

5 comments about The First Quarter : A 25-year History of Video Games.
  1. I've been reading Steven Kent's articles in Next Generation magazine for a few years, patiently waiting for his book to come out. As soon as it was released, I purchased it and read it the next weekend. All I can say is I enjoyed the interviews, articles and historical information so much it inspired me to write a paper on the history of video game heroes for my Business Communications course! Good work!

  2. I want to thank the people who were so kind in their reviews.

The First Quarter has been re-released as The Ultimate History of Video Games by Prima Publishing. This new version of the book includes an additional chapter, a time line, the oft-requested index, additional art, and above all--PROFESSIONAL EDITING.

As stated in many reviews, The First Quarter suffered from my lack of editing skills. I self-published that book. While my writing skills may be questionable, my editing abilities are indisputably bad.

Finally, I want to thank the people who bought my book and read it. I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing my enthusiasm for video games.

  3. This book is one of the most comprehensive tellings of the history of video games. The author puts you right in the middle of the discoveries and events that shaped how we view games today. I have read about a half dozen different books about video game history and this one is hands down the best written so far on the subject. So even if you are not a huge fan of games or havent picked up a controller in years, this is still the book for you!

  4. Not being able to find "The First Quarter" I emailed Mr. Kent. He told me that the book he wrote being published by Prima, "The Ultimate History of Video Games," was was a rewrite of "The First Quarter" with a little added material. (So if you're loooking for this one and can't find it there you go.) This was the most interesting book I've read in a long time. Reading the stories and history from an insider's perspective was truely fascinating. If you're a gamer I highly recommend this title.

  5. As books on gaming history goes, this one is excellent. It does an extremely good job of meshing together concise narrative with compelling quotations from industry luminaries. Mr. Kent does a good job of distilling the chaotic early days of Arcade games and the eventual boom of home video game systems. His gift is for making connections between seemingly disperate events. I have read several books that chronical the early days of Atari, but few of them provide such a rich background as to the influences on Nolan Bushnell and his band of pot smoking, hot tub soaking programmer-savants.

My only caveat is that this book has been entirely reprinted as "The Ultimate History of Video Games". So closely do these two books resemble each other that there are a number of typos that passed from one book to the newer edition.

Had I known that "The Ultimate History of Video Games" was a reprint I wouldn't have had this so high on my Wish List. My girlfriend search and searched and picked this book up for 75 bucks on ebay. The bonus for me is that it was signed by Mr. Kent...and the signature is vague enough that I can go...oh yeah...I saw him at E3. I don't mind having both this book and the reprinting in my collection and if you to are building the definitive video game history library, you should get it otherwise...I'd say track down the "Ulitimate History of Video Games" and be confident that you aren't missing out on anything in this book.

3 comments about Rumble Roses(tm) Official Strategy Guide (Official Strategy Guides (Bradygames)).
  1. This game, as far as graphics go, is very well presented. The character models are quite good, the animations are excellent, and the arenas are nice. The games other strong point is the wrestling, thankfully. The controls are smooth, there are plenty of moves, and the reversal system works well. The power up meter is well implemented, and the humiliation meter is also well done.

The negatives for this game include a lack of variety, as there are only 4 arenas (including the mud wrestling ring) and the girls share a lot of their moves with one another. The story mode is also REDICULOUSLY cheesy.

One thing to note about this game; it is NOT for children. There are overt sexual tones to the game, and I would only recommend it for adults.

If you can look past the lack of variety and cheesiness, and are just looking for a good wrestling game, with plenty of eye candy, then this game is for you. Me personally, I'm tired of wrestling with big oily men in tights, and found this game as an excelleny alternative.

  2. The book is ok. The pictures which are supposed to show the moves are too small, difficult for those of us who are optically
challenged. The game system is explained as are the characters. My main complaint is the size of the pictures

  3. than you 4 fast service!
Best reference I ever read!, great qualaty!
Very easy to understand and great illustrations.
    A collectors item.
    Thank you!

5 comments about Final Fantasy VIII: Gamespot's Unofficial Ultimate Strategy Guide.
  1. Buy the official one - this is a load of old nonsense and a complete waste of cash!

  2. Most people would disagree with me but this book was OK, it wasn't confusing as the official and the side information is well put together.

  3. I bought this book because I wanted to get into the Final Fantasy game series like my friends and I needed help getting started. This book didn't get the job done. It claims to be able to help anyone from beginners to Final Fantasy experts, but their instructions are no use to the novice. Plus it looks really weird too.

  4. Okay, the Final Fantasy VIII Offcial Strategy Guide by David Cassady is much better than this! The only up over the official guide is that it has a recommended Junctions list.

To start off, the walkthrough is like reading an FAQ at GameFAQS.com, in other words, no screenshots, no maps, just words. Oh, did I mention that the pages are purple? Not to mention that you could easily go to Gamespot.com and find this EXACT SAME GUIDE only you'll have it for free.

There are no stats for bosses and almost no strategy is involved in the guide whatsoever. The guide needs more work because of the fact that with no screens and absolutely no strategy, it leaves for big improvements. If you go to gamespot though, they actually have screenshots.

The only other step above the official guide is that the guide has a final boss strategy. Its just a shame that the strategy is so horrible that it can't be done.

Now for the secrets. Umm.....what secrets? Oh thats right, the guide has none! I was thinking "hey its an unauthorized guide, it might have more secrets than the official", well, I was wrong about that. Luckily I returned the guide and got my money back.

let this be a lesson. Look before you buy, for the love of god look at the guide before you buy it. Now if this was a guide for FFIX it would've been better than the official guide by a long shot.

Overall: If you like GameFAQs and like to pay for guides when you could see the exact same thing online, this is the perfect guide for you! Then grimace in shame as you see the exact same thing at Gamespot.com.

  5. Why bother with this when they have GameFAQs FAQs on their own site!?
