4 comments about The Ultimate Paper Airplane: With Step-by Step Instructions.
  1. I had this book as a kid, and the planes in this book are the best that I have seen. This is a must have to any paper airplane enthusiast

  2. If you have any interest in paper airplanes, beyond the simplicity of tossing one around for a few minutes on a slow day at work, this book is for you. Forget the flimsy loop-the-loop planes that you used to make as a kid. This book will really show you how to make the *ultimate* paper airplane, with some interesting variations as well.

The concept behind the aerodynamics of this plane are so profound, it has been awarded patents, and several college graduates received scholarships researching and writing about it. Definitely a must read.

  3. If you hve a child who is a dreamer, into non-traditional fun, and loves to read, then this book is it. My uncle got it for me when I was 11 or 12, and I devoured it whole. The airplanes are fantastic to build, and they truely fly for a long time. Be warned though, the planes take about 20-30 minutes each to construct and you will need scissors, a paperclip (some models even require rubber cement), and lots of patience for great airplanes. I lost my copy in one of my many moves since being 12 (about 14 years ago) and I bought this book again. It gave me not just hours, but DAYS of fun as a kid.

  4. Every book on paper airplanes will start by saying their planes are the best. When I first bought this book in 1985, I judged the book by it's cover and believed it was going to contain "the ultimate paper airplane". That was almost 20 years ago now, and the cover has never let me down!
I enjoyed these planes when I first got the book, I enjoyed them again when I started to learn to fly real airplanes in High School, I enjoyed them when I was taking physics classes in College, and now I'm looking forward to enjoying them with the next generation of paper airplane flyers.
If there is a better book about making planes that can be folded out of a single sheet of paper, I haven't found it.
A compelling story about inventors and their dreams, clear explanations about the physics of flying, easy directions for folding planes, AND you end up with planes that are fun to fly because they fly so well!

5 comments about Toy Car Collector's Guide: Identification and Values for Diecast, White Metal, Other Automotive Toys & Models (Toy Car Collectors Guide).
  1. A great new, year 2002 softbound 336 page volume. There are more than 800 brands of cars included, from 1910 to 2000. An interesting history is provided, as well as current values and buying and selling tips. The book covers Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Corgi, Johnny Lightning,Tomica and more. There's detailed information about scale, evaluating models, and insights into buying and selling. Comprehensive guide for the collector.

  2. This book has a review on almost every kind of toy car, but leaves out the prices of a lot of them. There is almost no selection for hot-wheels, but there is a lot of selection for matchbox. My problem is that I have cars with no model numbers, which makes this book useless. I was able to find ERTL and a few others I had though.

  3. The books has many companies listed and gives histories but gives a generic price range. I mainly purchased this book for 1:18 scale models and was sad to see that a roughly half of my collection is not even listed in the book.

  4. I've just seen this book at a local bookstore. I was pretty excited when I found it and started to browse. But then, I became a little disappointed! The author gives a few pages to companies like Corgi and Dinky, and far too many to Majorette. I would say that the Majorette part is almost one tenth of the book! Overall the photos are pretty good and there's some good information too.
I didn't buy it, but maybe I would later, and only if I find it at a very, VERY, low price!

  5. Do not spend your money on this and all Dana books.Unless you want to see a bunch of letters and photos of listed cars that are not a collector items.Majorette items do half of the book.If you are lookin for a book on die cast models cars, buy something by an english.

3 comments about Doll Values Antique to Modern.
  1. The 9th updated and expanded edition of "Doll Values: Antique To Modern" is a justifiable best-seller because it is a 'must' for any dedicated doll collector. "Doll Values" nicely pairs clear, small color photos with the latest doll values, offers a starting point for building up a reference library, and helps classify different styles and types of dolls. "Doll Values" is a 'must' for any serious collector - and many a general-interest library holding will also find it an important and popular addition to their Antiques/Collectibles reference collections.

  2. This is another excellent entry in a series of very useful books. Good basic information on a variety of doll makers, good illustrations. I like the range of values given for dolls depending on the condition, since not all dolls are mint, and there can be an enormous difference between fair conditon and excellent.

  3. This book is missing antique dolls by certain leading German manufacturers. The book makes reference to a specific manufacturer but does not include dolls of the manufacturer.

1 comments about Easy-to-Make Decorative Kites: Step-by-Step Instructions for Nine Models from Around the World.
  1. This is one of those craft books ideal for the Boy or Girl Scout troop leader. The designs are very detailed and they all require a great deal of effort to complete. The projects are from all over the world and they are:

    *) The European Diamond Kite
*) The Japanese Red Devil Swooper Kite
    *) The Oriental Butterfly Kite
    *) The Korean Warrior Kite
    *) The Chinese Yuan Kite
    *) The Guatemalan Sun Kite
*) The Traditional Chinese Dragonfly Kite
*) The New England Ghost Kite
    *) The High-tech Box Kite

There is a scaled grid drawing of each of the kites and detailed textual instructions regarding the materials to use as well as how to put the kites together. Several diagrams showing intermediate stages in the kite construction are also included for each model. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in young people creating advanced kite models, independent of the reasons for wanting to do so.

4 comments about Beautiful Babies 2: Advanced Techniques in Reborn Doll Making.
  1. Book is not well made. After less than 1 week is started to come apart. Michelle is very talented, but this book is over hyped. Book is way overpriced for the content.

  2. I actually liked this book a lot better than the first one. I think I'd call this an intermediate level book.
She uses Genesis paints in this book and goes into creating life like skin coloring using a broad pallet of colors. (And she does this for several races, not just Caucasian babies.)
I thought there was a lot of good information on color in this book. (Color mixing, undertones, techniques, color correction, etc...)
If you are starting out in reborning I would say this is an excellent purchase. It's also good if you don't have much background in color theory. (Which, I think, many reborners lack).
If you are really looking for advanced techniques, that's not really here.
If you are starting out but would like your dolls to look more life-like this book will probably help you.
I give the information in this book 5 stars BUT it is way overpriced (hence my 4 star rating).
If you are interested, I'd look for a copy on sale or the cd-rom version.

  3. As a newer reborner I bought this book hoping to learn something. I did not learn anything that I didn't already know or could find for FREE on the internet. This would be a great book for someone whom has reborned a baby or two but definetely not for an advanced reborner. Book was poorly written and someone needed to do spell check before publishing. Book is not worth the money at all. I felt totally ripped off & let down. I would say the only thing that is good about it is the pictures as well as the info on ethnic coloring.

  4. Is this really only 56 pages? Seems like a lot of money for a pamphlet.
Not sure if I want to order it now.
    Lulu is for self-published items.

5 comments about Soul Mate Dolls: Dollmaking As a Healing Art.
  1. I did not know what to expect when I ordered Soul Mate Dolls by Noren Crone-Findlay. After it's arrival I became totally intrigued. First of all, Noreen is so in tune with nature that she thanks the trees for the paper on which the book is printed. Each chapter is a story in itself. In the Basic Flat Soul Mate Doll chapter, learn not only how to cut and use the templates provided, but also how to weave on a simple loom made with ordinary household materials, how to draw a face without being intimidated and how to make your own wooden knitting needles!Chapter Two is The Power Story. Enter the realm of creativty and unleash your inner spirit. Read the delightful story of Mollie Whuppie, delight in Soul Mate doll chairs in the shape of animals and flowers, make a pocket doll and her pouch or crochet a tiny hat.Chapter Three delves into dreams, journals and doodling. Here you can make a bendable doll out of chenille stems or wire, knit an Ancient Dancer or soar and dance with cardstock dolls. I especially liked how Noreen gives you permission to be child-like in the creative approach.Chapter Four is emotion where our emotions can be recognized and immortalized. Both happy and sad feelings are explored through these dolls. Even a very simple tassel doll can be given to someone just as a thank you. You can construct a little kitty yarn dolly for the cat person in your life.Chapter Five is Magic mixed with Whimsey. How about a mermaid , a fairy or an elf. The Magical Children can be easily personalized with a tiny photo of your child's face.In Chapter Six, we find ourseleves developing a relationship with the Wise Old Person within us. How about carving a head from an avocado pit or making a paper kimono? Soul Mate Dolls is mind expanding, funny and mystical.Noreen Crone-Findlay gives us the tools to use our hands to reach into our hearts and souls.

  2. The book is charming, with lots of ideas for creating one-of-a-kind dolls. DEFINITELY not your usual Raggedy-Annes or floppy nonentities. If I were leading a women's retreat, either for my church or for a women's group, then I would want to use this book to help others exercise their hands and their souls at the same time. For me, harried mom of a toddler, who makes her dolls on the run, while coping with wind, toads large dogs and spraying hoses, however, the book did not offer much. Buy it if you have the time and inclination to do a lot more thinking than sewing.

  3. I was not impressed with this book on either a spiritual or artistic level. The spiritual exercises were obvious and thin, and the dolls themselves didn't do much for me. I didn't learn much from this book. Perhaps my expectations were too high because I was hoping for something similar to Cassandra Light's _Way of the Doll_. I did think that some of the exercises and dolls would be useful for a class or group where you didn't want to go into too much detail on either the dollmaking or spiritual exercises. In particular, some of the paper dolls techniques were nice and would be easy to do for people without a strong craft background. A beginner to crafts or spiritual exercises might get more from this than I did.

  4. I had high hopes for this book, but instead of inspiring my OWN creativity and soul journey, I found the book filled with patterns and detailed instructions for making the AUTHOR'S soul dolls. It just ain't the same unless they're your own! I appreciated the paper doll pattern and fabric clothing, but I don't knit or own a sewing machine, so I was left just admiring the author's talents. Very detailed instructions - 14 steps to make a tassel doll, for example, with pipe-cleaner type hands - but the pages of numbered steps were rather numbing. I was also annoyed that every doll had "Soul Mate" in its name: Pocket Soul Mate Dolls, Skater Soul Mate Doll, Forgiveness Fairy Soul Mate Doll. (Name reinforcement can go too far.) Although it didn't work for me, this could be a great book for someone already comfortable with sewing, knitting, and weaving doll clothes. And I did enjoy some of the author's other art-therapy techniques, such as starting a Coloring Pages journal and using big fat crayons to "take a holiday from words."

  5. This is not a book on how to make plush dolls; this is a book on how to make jointed paperdolls. The ideas for embellishment are OK, but all in all I was dissapointed. I was looking for a more creative stuffed doll book.

Some of the patterns were very nice, however, if you're looking for paper doll patterns or for pleasant looking faces. Many of the patterns, with a little adjustment, can be made into a plush doll. The book did have a very nice weaving technique, though.

Also, the 'spiritual excersizes' leave a lot to be desired. To me, they seemed to be how a non-Wicca person sees Wicca. Too much emphasis was placed on the dolls and the person creating them for healing purposes.
This is one book any library won't weep without.

1 comments about Scroll Saw Toys and Vehicles: A Complete Technique and Project Pattern Manual.
  1. This book does indeed contain patterns for vehicles than can be made on a scroll saw- although a router and disk sander are also helpful to have. However, I would not characterize the patterns or instructions as "complete." There are no exploded full-size views of the patterns; all parts are superimposed. In many cases, there are no noticeable lines to delineate overlapped parts. For example, the dirt bike is shown with bungee cables over it, on its trailer. The bungee cables are solid black and obscure the outlines of several parts of the seat assembly. There was no need to show these on a cutting diagram!
