5 comments about How to Think Like A Horse: The Essential Handbook for Understanding Why Horses Do What They Do.
  1. I sent this book as a gift to a good friend who is an avid equestrian. She was at a camp teaching horseback riding when she received it and promptly read it from cover to cover. The other instructors were very jealous and want their own copy as well!

  2. There is something for everyone in this book; the professional or amateur. I have been working with horses for 35 years and learned quite a few new tips from the book. A excellant read.

  3. Also a great book for kids who WANT to learn more about horses and their keep -- even though Mom is gonna have to read it to them.

  4. Unbelievable! Simply "Click to Look Inside" and view the copyright page. The author needs to choose her publisher more carefully. I'll not buy this book nor anything by Storey Publishing.

  5. I learned a lot from this book on how to relate to my horse. It gave me a greater understanding of why he acts the way he does. I would recommend it to any horse lover. It is easy to read and understand.

5 comments about Giants Among Men: How Robustelli, Huff, Gifford, and the Giants Made New York a Football Town and Changed the NFL.
  1. This book covers an era when the Giants actually played in New York and weren't paid millions of dollars.Cavanaugh's book covers the Giants from 1952 thru the mid to late 60's.Even though I'm not a Giant fan this was an interesting look at football history.Legendary players such as Frank Gifford,Andy Robustelli, (who's from Connecticut) linebacker Sam Huff, and legendary coaches Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi all get time in the spotlight. The Giants actually fielded great teams from 1956 up until 1963/64.This being the 50th anniversary of the best game ever 1958's Giants vs. Colts gets it's own chapter.Cavanaugh also tells why the Giants to this day have a large New England following: there were no Patriots yet and the Giants used to hold training camps in Vermont and at Connecticut's Fairfield University, not to mention being broadcast throughout New England.Yes folks in the late 50's early 60's the Giants were the toast of New York, even sharing lockers and a field with other famous tenants such as Mantle,Maris,Berra, and Ford. This book is an excellent companion piece to Mark Bowden's 'The Best Game Ever' and Frank Gifford's soon to be released 'The Glory Game.' If anyone in your household is a big Giant fan 'Giants Among Men' will make a great holiday gift.

  2. This book is ostensibly about the NFL New York Giants from the mid-1950's to the early 1960's... rest assured the author surely provides you with intimate details about the Giants during this time period... but if that's all you're expecting... and believe me... that's plenty... you're going to be more than pleasantly surprised... you will be blown away. Any old-time-old-school football fan will think they're having a dream or a flashback... to the time when football was really football! The quarterback wasn't wearing a dress in those days... there were no GUARANTEED one-hundred-million-dollar-plus contracts. All the players had fulltime jobs during the winter, and some even had second jobs during the playing season.

The New York Giants football team of this burgeoning era had so many famous All-Pro and future Hall Of Fame players that the potential reader will understand without hesitation why this was the time... and this was the team... that helped lead professional football onto center stage... a stage that the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE still dominates today. Some of the Giant players that you will be introduced to (or... reintroduced to) include Andy Robustelli, Pat Summerall, Frank Gifford, Sam Huff, Charlie Conerly, Kyle Rote, Y.A. Tittle, Rosey Brown, Del Shofner, Emlen Tunnell, Alex Webster, Jack Katcavage, Dick Lynch, Rosey Grier... and many others.

OH YEA... Two of their ASSISTANT COACHES... THAT'S RIGHT I SAID ASSISTANT COACHES... ARE TWO OF THE MOST LEGENDARY COACHES IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL!
    **VINCE LOMBARDI AND TOM LANDRY**

Though the core and the title of this book is built around the New York Giants, the author Jack Cavanaugh seamlessly integrates every team and every noteworthy player that had an impact on the historical coming of age of this monolith... that is today's NFL. The reader is right there when Jimmy Brown the greatest running back in the history of the NFL comes into the league with the Giants greatest rival the Cleveland Browns. Brown is given complete recognition for his unmatched combination of POWER-SPEED-ATHLETICISM and competitive nature. Another powerful part of this book is how it educates the reader on teams and accomplishments that lead to the current state of affairs of the league at the time the book depicts. Such as the fact that the Cleveland Browns from the late 1940's to the early 1950's PLAYED IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES TEN-YEARS-IN-A-ROW! "The first four of those ten championship games had been played in the All-America Football Conference, all of which the Browns won. But the last six had been in the NFL, whose title it had won three times - including 1950, the Browns' first year in the NFL. This came much to the astonishment of the League establishment, which had regarded the AAFC as inferior." There is also a detailed look at a young quarterback that was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers without ever letting him get into a real game. This unknown quarterback then played semi-pro football for $6.00 per game. This football reject is then given a chance with the Baltimore Colts and becomes one of the greatest quarterbacks in history... Johnny Unitas. The author flawlessly weaves Johnny's story into the flow of the Giants tome... which dovetails into what is known around the world by any knowledgeable football fan as *THE-GREATEST-GAME-IN-THE-HISTORY-OF-FOOTBALL"... the 1958 World Championship Football game between the New York Giants and Baltimore Colts.

There are untold sub-plots and character studies that will keep the true football fan turning the pages faster than an Olympic sprinter going for the gold. But I would like to share one unique tale about one lesser known player named Hardy Brown. A chapter is named after him: "THE MEANEST MAN IN THE NFL". Hardy played for eight years "and had been the scourge of the NFL, knocking out scores of opponents and breaking as many, if not more, noses and jaws with his patented shoulder tackle. Though only six-feet-tall and about 190 pounds, Brown had a well-deserved reputation as the most devastating hitter in the NFL, a hell-bent-linebacker who flattened quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, and opposing linemen, usually by using his shoulder as a lethal weapon." Hall Of Famer Y.A. Tittle said. "He was a regular knockout artist and inspired us. I remember how in his first game with the Colts against the Redskins in 1951, he knocked out all three running backs. Altogether that year, he knocked out twenty-one players. AND WHEN I SAY KNOCKED OUT, I MEAN KNOCKED OUT COLD WITH HIS SHOULDER TACKLE TO THE POINT THAT THEY HAD TO BE CARRIED OFF ON STRETCHERS. I NEVER SAW A FOOTBALL PLAYER WHO COULD HIT AS HARD AS HARDY BROWN. HE BROKE A LOT OF NOSES BEFORE PLAYERS BEGAN WEARING FACE MASKS IN THE MID-FIFTIES, AND THEN, AFTER PLAYERS BEGAN WEARING FACE MASKS, BUSTED A LOT OF THEM WITH THAT VICIOUS SHOULDER TACKLE."

The historical information in this book will hit the old-school football fan like a Hardy Brown shoulder-tackle!

  3. As a longtime New York Giant fan, and televison sports researcher, I was very disappointed in Jack Cavanaugh's "Giants Among Men." A careful reader will quickly notice the author's reptitious style of the author, as he overly indulges in the post-game Charlie Conerly hotel room parties, and subsequent "nights on the town" at Toot Shor's and P.J. Clarkes's. The beginning of the book seems to be a biography of Andy Robustelli, and Mr. Cavanaugh provides endless detail of the defensive end, while virtually ignoring other Giant players. There are several casual mistakes (such as stating different winners of the same game) and a glaring error of the date when the goal posts were moved from the goal line to the end line of the NFL playing field ( it was 1974, not 1963, as Mr. Cavanauagh states). These errors cause the reader to wonder if the author truly knows professional football. His style of prose and use of various quotes seem to point to the fact that Mr. Cavanaugh really does not understand the sport. In addition, the author states that he interviewed former Giant defensive end Jim Katcavage and former NFL executive Jim Finks for the book - both men have been dead for over ten years..!!

Finally, it appears that Mr Cavanaugh has a "vendetta" against Frank Gifford for writing his own Giant book this fall. He quotes former New York Giant publicist Don Smith, stating that Gifford "was an opportunist who was always looking for a connection." He also refers to Gifford's wife, who was known as "Kathie Lee Johnson" prior to their marriage, as "Kathie Lee Epstein."

The lack of proper research and editing is obvious in "Giants Among Men." In that respect, this account is not a "giant", but a rather meager publication.

  4. If you're most interested in information on the 1956-58 Giants, you'd be better off reading The Glory Game: How the 1958 NFL Championship Changed Football Forever by Frank Gifford, which covers the same time period better in my opinion. "Giants Among Men" is not a bad book, but it's real strength lies in it's dicussion of the post-58 to mid 60's era.

  5. I was 14 years old when I saw on TV Pat Summerall make a 49 yard field goal in the driving snow with time running out to win a game against the Browns. I found the drama and the heroism of these guys who played with great intensity to be quite powerful. Young males need heroes and the NY Giants were mine. There were no show-offs, no egos, no product endorsements, self promotions, or compulsive interruptions of the game for advertising. I really enjoyed the Giants' run of 5 years with the same group of heroes playing on dirt in all kinds of weather. I found this book to be quite pleasant reading. There are no great revelations or inflammatory gossip or lugubrious statements about the historical or societal significance of this or that. I enjoyed reading the respectful and gentlemanly comments from the grown up men who played in the great games I saw on TV. They were giants and they were heroic men and I liked them.

5 comments about Follow the Roar: Tailing Tiger for All 604 Holes of His Most Spectacular Season.
  1. This book is a must for the golf fan - or any dedicated sports fan for that matter. Yes, the book is about Tiger's season, but the real story is the entertaining, season long adventures of the ultimate golf fan - Bob Smiley! Read this and prepare to laugh. The book is entertaining, educational, and a keeper.

  2. As a nominal golf fan, I picked up this book with skepticism: could 300 pages of hole-by-hole coverage capture my attention? To my surprise Bob Smiley's international escapades not only kept me reading, but Follow the Roar is quite the page turner. The story is not just Tiger but a traveling memoir in celebration of fandom. At the centerpiece of this great story is one of the greatest seasons of the best golfer ever. Smiley's perspective and Tiger's greatness through adversity create a great read for any sports fan. I've already purchased copies as gifts for my dad and the president of the organization I work for, both avid golfers.

  3. Follow the Roar chronicles Tiger's every move and gives the reader a unique perspective on golf's most famous current player, Tiger Woods. Easy to read and full of details, this is a great book to add to your golf collection.

  4. I was first drawn to Follow the Roar because it was written by a classmate of my daughter. Oddly, I found that Bob Smiley had many of the same feelings about Tiger that I have had. In an effort to root for the underdog, I looked for every reason to dislike Tiger. As I read this book, it brought to the forefront the subtle change in my feelings about Tiger. Yeah, we all want to see the average Joe have his day, but Tiger is so darn good it is hard to not be won over by him. Bob makes this an easy and enjoyable read, while sometimes making fun of himself for things we have all thought or done. A fun book that will be a great gift for your golfer friends.

  5. What a trip! Though I am not a golfer, I have long held an admiration for Tiger Woods' finesse with his chosen sport. To be able to walk his 2008 journey with him. and laugh all the while at Bob Smiley's adventures makes this book a keeper.

5 comments about Sports Illustrated: The Football Book.
  1. I bought this book for my 17-yr old who is a visual thinker, not a strong reader, but I loved it too! There are some amazing photos in the book and lots of history of the game and some players. I got a strong sense of the traditions of the game and the excitement for the sport. I am a stronger football fan because of it! I also recommend the rest of this 'series' by Sports Illustrated, The Baseball Book and The Basketball Book.

  2. This was the comment of my 7 year old nephew (a Jets fan) when I gave him this book. It has the trademark Sports Illustrated photography, plus lots of old photos showing the infancy of the sport, which are interesting to adults and kids alike. He's a beginning reader, but we enjoyed looking at the pictures, with his guessing which teams were shown based on the uniforms. The Amazon price is a bargain. Highly recommended for boys and fans of all ages!

  3. This is a unique, beautifully photographed book! It includes the history of football and large, clear photos of some of the best games! My husband loves it! If you're a football fan, you will treasure this book!

  4. I bought this months ago and still have it out on my coffee table - that's how much I love this! It is loaded with excellent pictures and makes a great conversation starter when friends and family that come over. The history of the NFL is covered well and the articles offer terrific insights into sports past.

  5. Very neat gift idea. I purchased it for my cousin and he was extremely happy with it.

5 comments about Holding Fast: The Untold Story of the Mount Hood Tragedy.
  1. I brought Holding Fast with me on a week-long trip, expecting to read it over the course of the entire trip. After opening the front cover, I was immediately drawn in to the emotion and experience of the story and finished reading the entire book before my two-hour flight touched down.

Holding Fast is the true story of a wife's anxiety, agony, and faith as her husband was stranded and eventually killed in a mountain climbing accident on Mt. Hood. A trip, planned to last 2 days, turned into days of anxious trepidation for the family of Kelly James as he did not come down from the mountain.

His wife, Karen, relates what the experience was like for the family as they waited and prayed. Hers is a story of faith, shaken by grief, but ultimately steadfast.

The love, faith, and honesty in the book are powerful, but what is most on display is the character of God. The author holds Him up as the anchor during the storm, and she shows how her faith in God gave her hope and strength amidst a terrible agony.

I was deeply moved by this story, having to close the book and regain my composure many times during my reading. I would certainly recommend Holding Fast as a touching and encouraging story of the triumph of God's love over painful circumstances.

  2. Karen's prose is heart felt. I know nothing about mountain climbing and her explanations of things made that a non-issue. However, the farther I got into the book, that harder it was for me to read, because I knew the outcome. It was not going to be a happy ending. And, because Karen shares so much of herself, her family and her relationship, you ache for her knowing that.

I enjoyed the personal photos and poems she included. They really helped turn a story I had heard about on the news into a real experience for me. This really happened to three families; it wasn't just breaking news.

But, most importantly, this is a story of faith. And, can't we all use a little more of that right now? I felt myself inspired by her faith and the love that she and Kelly shared. It is a beautiful book and one that would make a great holiday gift. I hope that she and the families of Brian and Nikko have found some peace and continue to heal. I wish them all a wonderful holiday season and thank them for sharing their story with the world.

  3. In December 2006, my home state of Oregon was getting all sorts of national media coverage, and none of it was good. In early December, the Kim family - wife, husband, and two daughters from California - got lost traveling a logging road in the Southern Oregon snow. The father died from exposure while trying to find help; the mother and daughters were found alive. Then just two weeks later, three climbers went missing on Mount Hood. Our hearts already broken for the Kim family's loss, many Oregonians stayed glued to the news as the search for the hikers was complicated by horrible weather on the mountain. We were all hoping for the very best for these hikers and their families, but it would turn out to be another sad tragedy in our great state.

When I saw that Karen James, wife of one of the climbers lost on Mount Hood, had written a book about her family's experiences, I was eager to read this story from her perspective. To me, she was a name and a face on my daily news during that dark month of December 2006. But in Holding Fast: The Untold Story of the Mount Hood Tragedy, I got to meet her and her amazing family, hear the love story behind her marriage to Kelly James, and discover the lasting faith that carried her through her loss.

Holding Fast is a moving account of Karen's unwanted journey. It's written in a very conversational tone, creating an intimate atmosphere full of feeling. She gives precious insight into the passion that drove Kelly James to climb many of the world's greatest mountains. She shows how her faith, and the faith of Kelly's children, guided them through their unimaginable trials. She also pieces together details of Kelly's final hours, providing a likely scenario for what happened on the mountain and how Kelly honored his family in the last moments of his life.

I enjoyed this book and read it in just a few hours. I felt glad to be taken into Karen James' confidence and encouraged by the strength of her faith and the admonition she gives that we ought to appreciate every moment we have while our loved ones are here with us on earth.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson for this review copy.

  4. This is a gripping tale of the triumph in the midst and over tragedy told by one who experienced the sustaining power of grace throughout.

It is the story of Karen James

As one reads, one begins to feel as if actually present, feeling the anxiety, anticipating the next call, grappling with issues of The Faith albeit in a relatively shallow manner.

The story has so many threads one may persue...

One may revel in the excitement, spirit of daring and measured risk-taking of Kelly James, without such men and women would we have ventured to the Moon or across Australia's outback? Yet, there are three kids who will continue to venture into their lives without the presence of a Dad, not to neglect Karen herself!

As a believer, and one who glories in the wonder of the New Covenant, these are the very tensions I am persuaded designed by our Sovereign God to be wrestled with during our tenure.

By no means do I want to cast a shadow on Kelly's actions/passion; other than to note he is not an exemplar!

Karen's record is not meant to be a theological treatise. It is an anecdotal testimony of her perception of sustaining grace.

But, again, she is not an exemplar though, without a doubt to be commended for her fidelity during the trial.

At the same time, one is moved to thank God for the fellowship of the saints in her experience!

Being an ENTJ, I admit to using up a few tissues during the read. But, following every resort to tissues, I would have to put the book down and ask myself, aside from my physiological/subjective response, what of theological substance is being presented?

    My answer: very little.

Do I, would I recommend the book? Certainly. Every believer's testimony has value and this is Karen's.

She is to be commended for sharing with us. My thanks to her.

  5. Though their time together didn't start until somewhat later in life and was cut tragically short, it is clear that Karen and Kelly James were soul-mates who were simply meant to be together. Holding Fast is the story of Karen and Kelly's lives together, culminating with the recounting of the tragic climbing accident on Mount Hood that took the lives of Kelly and his two climbing partners. Though the outcome of the true life events that are the subject of this book are known going in, that in no way detracts from the power of the story.

The outpouring of support, both from rescue personnel and those offering prayer and emotional support, was overwhelming and heartwarming to read about. Because Kelly had a cell phone, Karen and the rescuers were able to have intermittent contact with Kelly and knew, for the most part, exactly where he was on the mountain. Unfortunately, extreme weather conditions made it impossible for the rescue team to mount a successful ascent to Kelly until it was too late.

Karen's recounting of the phone calls she was able to have with Kelly while he was trapped on the mountain are brutally honest and reflect the conflicting emotions she had while doing so; blessed to be fortunate enough to have an opportunity for a last goodbye, yet devastated to hear how clearly he was struggling and deteriorating, both knowing he would not be coming down off the mountain alive.

It is truly ironic that Karen's great-grandfather, George William Barrett, also died in a climbing accident, something she didn't know until after Kelly's death. However, unlike her great-grandmother who "died of a broken heart" six months after Barrett's death, Karen called on her faith to get her through both the harrowing days spent trying to rescue Kelly and the void left when he died. Her story should serve as an inspiration for all those who've lost someone under tragic circumstances.

5 comments about Abc's Of Reloading: The Definitive Guide For Novice To Expert (ABC's of Reloading).
  1. This book came highly recommended by members of a forum on reloading. I was not disappointed. I will recommend it myself. The book covers the bases and is easy to read. You will need to add other books to your library, ( such as load data for specific calibers ) but this is a very good place to start.

  2. This is the book I used when I got started reloading about 10 years ago, and this book gave me just what I needed. When I first got the itch to load my own ammunition, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information and terminology involved in this fascinating field/hobby. It was very difficult to take all the individual pieces of information that I had and form it into an understandable process. I was snowed in under a blizzard of data that I was piecing together through chat rooms and web sites. Everyone was very helpful - basically shooters are the most helpful people I know - but still I was just getting fragments without a solid, complete overview. Phrases like "roll crimp", "seating and sizer dies," and "headspace" came at me in a blizzard. I could look up each phrase, understand each one as a piece, but still the whole picture was fuzzy. In essence, that is what this book will do for you: turn it all into a coherent, linear whole. The writing is very solid and clear, the illustrations are well done and helpful, and the information is very complete. After reading this book, the entire process made sense to me, and more importantly, I was fully warned about the does and don'ts of the reloading world. The coverage is very complete. Primers, powders, bullets and cases are explained with regard to nomenclature and history. All necessary tools and accessories are discussed and explained. This is just a great book. It won't make you an expert (only actual reloading for years will do that), but it will put you on the right road if you wish to become one. --Mykal Banta

  3. This book is an excellent introduction to reloading. I had read a lot of the material on-line, however, having a definitive source for the material is most comforting. The author makes excellent points about safety. This is not a reloading guide in the sense of providing recipes, but rather, an introduction to the topic, and a discussion in depth. The author clearly spells out that every reloader will also need not one, but several reloading manuals. As one who never contemplated reloading before, I found the material very understandable. This book both validated my research on the subject and gave me the confidence that I was going about reloading the right way.

  4. This book provides background information as well as the practical information a reloader needs whether you are a beginner or have experience with reloading ammunition.

  5. Now I believe over the years the editor of this book has changed. I have a 6th edition. Chapters in the book are written by different authors, however, the editors did a wonderful job of putting together information that will make you feel a lot more confident about reloading.

The book covers everything from casting bullets, to the differences of powders. And since it is not about just one companies products, suggestions like the homemade powder dipper, abound. It also explains such facts as why working out your own loads for your own guns will give you better accuracy. And gives an in-depth look at how to tell if a bullet case is bad and shouldn't be used. And it is much more readable than a manual.

I also recommend getting a copy of Learn Handgun & Rifle Reloading in Under 41 Minutes: 2007 Edition. This is the only video I've found that covers every step in the reloading process, so you can see what the manuals are talking about. With both the book and the video you'll not only understand what you are doing but know exactly how to do it.

5 comments about When Technology Fails (Revised & Expanded): A Manual for Self-Reliance, Sustainability, and Surviving the Long Emergency.
  1. What if technology failed? Who would be ready to survive? I don't know of many that would be able to take care of themselves, never mind their family. This book tells you what you need to do to live successfully if that time came.
Truth be told, we have forgotten how to live without. How to survive on our own. Who would you ask if that time came? This book gives basics from the very beginning. A "how to" for anything you might need to know.
This could be a valuable resource for everyone. Something to have on hand. Who knows what will be in store for us in the future. This is a comprehensive disaster tool with valuable reference material.
There is plenty of "good stuff" to take out of this book. Even if you just want to just get back to a few basics in your every day life. A good one to have in your library.

  2. I bought this book recently and have found some very detailed information for cooking without electricty, building shelter and other important information. Although at the moment it is in the house, it might be good to keep it in the family car.

  3. This was a great book for preparing for whatever may happen in a crisis situation

  4. service was very prompt and my book came packaged in excellent condition. definately buy from them again

  5. Very good book. To the point information. For those people that are living day to day. This is a must! For you that have a panic when the lights go out or the tap stops running. What to do when the unexpected drops upon you and your loved ones? I can only hope you have a chance to have read this book.

  1. I have always been interested about the aspects of survival. I found a website called . I really liked the website, and it turns out that the site was based on this book. So I purchased the book and am looking forward to reading it!

  2. Get this as a free download (Input on Google: "FM 21-76") and save this PDF File on a memory chip. It is what it purports to be. It could save your life and the lives of everyone in your family - even your neighbors. If it turns out that you don't have a need for it, then it cost you nothing.

  3. The item arrived in good condition and quickly but it was not as described as far as the information it provides it left a lot to be desired.

  4. I live right on an earthquake fault and thought it was about time I get prepared. This book isn't glamorous but gives alot of information.

  5. A really great book. It is worth hanging onto. Money well spent. I highly recommend it.

5 comments about The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer.
  1. A few days ago, I finished my first marathon. I went from a couch potato to running 26.2 miles using nothing but this book as a guide. I spent 10 weeks doing the recommended pre-training before starting the 16-week plan. I altered the plan a little due to some minor injuries and scheduling problems, but stuck to it for the most part. I think the best part of this training is in building your confidence and giving you the mental strength to get through adversity. When I hit mile 20, my legs were aching real bad and I needed to use some of the mental techniques described in the book to will myself to the finish line. It's only been a few days, but I'm already planning my next one! If you've never run a marathon before, I would definitely recommend this book to help you through your first one.

  2. So I decided I wanted to run a marathon. Was it really that crazy of an idea? I had not run more than 3 miles since high school - 15 years earlier!! I bought this book, started the training and two days ago I finished my first marathon! It was such a great experience. While I don't think I'll ever run another, I'm so glad and proud to say I have done it once. This is really a great book and does produce the results it claims to.

  3. This guide has great advice and insight into the physical and mental demands of endurance running. And the authors fully appreciate that there are real mental challenges -- inspiration, pride, and motivation are key elements of whether one can finish this race, rather than just footspeed.

Where the book is disappointing is in its dogmatic tone. It's a bit like listening to a high school gym instructor telling you "well do it my way or you are going to get an injury just you wait" over and over. One of the single most important skills in running is being in touch with the specific behavior of your body, and knowing when your legs are telling you that you need to adjust from a standardized training plan. I think this book is useful but would be helped by a more flexible point of view.

  4. I love this book! Had I not gotten injured in week 7 (no fault of the book or its methods... just my own crazy body structure!) I know that this book would have seen me through to completing my first marathon. I was amazed at how easy it was to follow the program, even considering my hectic life of two jobs and 4 kids. I had a lot of fun training with this program and would recommend it to anyone who would like to run a marathon for the first time.

  5. This is absolutely *the* book to use if you are intimidated by the marathon you just signed up for. Using a blend of solid training advice, exercises in the mental and psychological elements of marathon training, and first person stories from the authors' classes, The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer coaches you through every step of the way. This book was my primary guidance for training and running the LA Marathon, and I had a blast in every phase, even 16-mile training runs, which I did by myself because there aren't many marathoners as slow as me. I'm a big believer in training your mind as you train your body, and that's really the strength of this book. Highly recommended by the Slow Fat Triathlete!
