- When I first saw this book, I was surprised just how fresh these projects are! This isn't the typical "here's a bar...go wash with it" kind of book. The soaps you make in this one are definitely sassy. Cell phone soap -- how 21st century is that? I love it! I was getting one book for a friend who's into soap, but I'm going to get one for me, too.
Sassy Soaps takes soapmaking to the next level.
- Having read Ms. Sugarman's website for some time now, I had been waiting with anticipation for the release of her book. I was not disappointed. As someone who has just begun to explore her crafty side, "Sassy Soaps" has step by step instructions for the beginner. But there are also many creative ideas and unique projects that a more experienced person would enjoy. Why spend outrageous sums of money for the overpriced soaps you see at boutiques and specialty stores when you can make it in your own home at a fraction of the cost? So if you are looking for a soapmaking book that has an excellent mix of basic instructions for the uninitiated and more advanced concepts/ideas for people with more experience, this is the book for you. A+
- I was disappointed with this book. I have purchased a lot of soap books and found this to be the only one i havent used. It is really only for beginers with no challenges for someone trying to spread their wings. It has melt & pour recipes only. one recipe was to use a finshed bar of soap and told you how to put a tattoo transfer on it. That was it. Inspiring!
- For her birthday last year, I gave my niece some novelty soaps and she really took a liking to them. It turns out she also loves craft projects and I was looking for a way to combine these two interests into a present for Christmas. I went to a local crafting store and they recommended this book as a way to get into melt and pour soap making. My niece absolutely loves the projects! She and her mom worked together to make the snow dome soaps as favors for a friend's birthday party and they were a big hit. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get into this craft.

- I found this to be a very good book for a beginner which I am. It gives a good overview of what you need and how to use them. I also like that it gives a good bit of information about some advanced techniques. In summary, not great but enough to get me started -- which was my goal.
- The pictures are beautiful, but that is the only good thing I can say about this book. The techniques seem very complicated and are not explained or illustrated enough. This book does not even mention beadwax which is what I intended to use and think is probably the easiest way to make candles in containers. Also, not nearly enough information on adding scents. If you ask me, this book was a waste of my money.

- It containted a lot of simple, but useful recipes.
Easy to use and understand.
- While the potpourri and cologne recipes may be fine, I strongly advise against using his soap recipes, as the high percentage of lye isn't safe. If you wish to make soap, please invest in another, safer book--any of the following three have wonderful recipes that don't run the risk of destroying your skin: The Natural Soap Book, The Soapmaker's Companion or The Handmade Soap Book.

- Candle Making, by Bob Sherman (A step by step guide from beginner to expert)is a must have book for anyone making or considering to make candles from a first time hobbyist to the experienced candle maker.
I have read this book three times now, and learned quite a bit more with each reading. Even as a professional candle maker, there were projects and methods I had yet to experiment with. I've followed some of the projects in this book, and had EXCELLENT results. I can attest to the success anyone can have by following the projects included in this book. There are dozens of projects and the creativity Bob Sherman encourages will make for endless fun filled hours of candle making. Everything one needs to know from safety, set up, & workspace, through ingredients, formulas, and full explanations of everything, is here in a fun to read, easy to follow format. There are hundreds of instructional, material, and projects pictures. There is a plethora of charts, tables, and all the necessary formulas and references to guide and teach you. Raw materials and all possible ingredients are outlined and explained in detail, with attention paid to the interactions of all things that go into making a well burning, high quality candle. The glossary is exceptionally through and easy to understand. Candle Making, by Bob Sherman, is the ultimate guide. With this book, some experimentation, experience, and just a bit of creativity, you could make candles for a hobby or as a professional. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a creative outlet or just to learn about candle making. >Peter Bacotti >CanDoCandles.com
- I heard a lot about this book, so I decided to buy it. The contents are really good and helpful, but I was rather disappointed with the amazing number of typos I found. Considering that the book also contains formulas, typos are absolutely not acceptable - I still need to check one formula that I think is wrong.
Besides, the photos are all in black and white (in a candle book you would expect color photos) and, in some cases, it is almost impossible to figure out what the photo is trying to demonstrate.
- I've been making candles for about 15 years. Every year or so, I check the candle making books to see what's new. There were many new ones since I checked last and Bob Sherman's book Candle Making is the only one I bought. It was by far and away the best of the bunch. It has easy to understand instructions on a broad range of candle projects. Mr. Sherman also clearly explains all the elements of candle making as well as the materials used.
I know some people expect color pictures in a book like this one. However, I appreciate the use of black and white pictures in this book which, undoubtedly, keeps the price very reasonable. I hate to think what this book would cost with color pictures. If you buy only one candle making book, make it this one.
- Although this one lacks glossy color photo's, it has a lot of great and valuable information presented in simple terms. It has a lot of handy conversion charts and wax formulas for various end results. It discusses issues more serious candlemakers will run into that are not mentioned in other books, such as the dreaded wet spots, and suggestions on how to go about side by side wick testing comparisons. My favorite and most reliable reference.
- The author shares a lot of great information and recipies on making candles as well as setting up your own business. I bought it to add to my library as refernce material, after borrowing it from the library TWICE.

- I have read Phyllis Hobson's book on making soap and candles completely from scratch and I love it! She gives step-by-step instructions to make ingredients needed, or where you can buy such items. Her thorough instructions make you understand why you do the steps to get the end result. I would recommend this book for any beginner in the soap and candle making craft.
- Nice little book. It tells you how to do everything. I wish I could have gotten the whole Country Kithen Library.

- As a soap maker I really loved this book. I've probably read all the soap books available on the market. This book has by far the best creative projects and is filled with lovely stylish pictures. It is an inspiration and really makes you want to make soap. Hill's book is hard bound and over all very elegant, yet is surprisingly the lowest priced soap making book I've come across. It would be nice to make some of your own soaps and give the book as a present along with them. I did this recently and it was really apreciated, because the person who gets the gift understands the effort going into your soap.
The book is also clear informative. I bought my first soap book about 6 years ago and I wish this one had been around then. I baught the most recommended soap making book and I was so confused I nearly gave up, before developing my own recipe through trial and error. If you really want to know about a lot of sceintific jargon, this book is probably not for you. For most normal home purposes Hill gives you the basic information you will need as a beginner, with simple "normal people's" language. The book has a quick bullet point format, rather than getting to technical. Again I wish had this as reference when I started. She also answers all the questions I had as a totally bewildered beginner in a section in the back. with simple "normal peoples" language. She also gives honest direct safety information and suggestions. *If you do need more detailed information about the chemistry side, you can always get one of the larger nore technical words only books.
- Not really convinced about some of the measurements;
1.To much essential oil - makes the soap to overpowering . 2.lye reccomendations to high; ive run them through an online lye calculater to discover that they are abit excessive, and im convinced this is why ive ended up a couple of times with white chunks in my soap. 3.Alot of the food additives such as the Honey And oats are way to excessive in quantitys-I then found with time they went mouldy. Nice array of ideas , just needed abit more fine tuning than it actually had.
- This was my first book on soap making, and although the pictures are beautiful I didn't learn enough to feel comfortable trying the recipes. I think this is a good book for getting your creative juices flowing, but unless you are experienced in soap making, you won't get much from this book. There is no in-depth explanation of oils, scents, colors, or anything. Actual instruction in soap making was two pages. No saponification tables, no rebatching instruction, and no discussion of different types of soap making (only cold process). Very vague about many things. I would not recommend this book for a beginner. For ideas and pretty pictures get this book.
- I already knew how to make soap before buying this book. So I've found it simple with great receipes. I usually do utility soaps but if you want to go further in fancy soapmaking, this book is excellent.
- This is a good book. I prefer to make handmilled soaps with natural ingredients like oatmeal, honey, lavender buds, coffee, milk, coconut, calendula, etc. Lots of soap books feature soaps with pretty colored soap chunks, glitter, and other pretty colors, but not everyone can tolerate these pretty but sometimes irritating additions to their soaps. Making soaps with more natural ingredients gives your soaps a different texture and appearance. This books gives you a realistic idea of what you can expect to see when you unmold and slice your soap. I have extremely sensitive skin. I always had an interest in making soap, but because I can not be around serious chemicals like lye (traditional soap making is out of the question). I turned to soap making after using soaps (for sensitive skin), but after I used them I would develop hives, rashes, etc. I have not had that problem since I started making my own soaps. The soaps in this book give you lots of unique ideas and recipes. The pictures are great. I just wish it was a little longer.
