5 comments about Quick-Sew Denim: With No-Sew Options.
- This book contains many ideas for reusing denim jeans as raw material for sewing projects. Chauncey provides an interesting short history of denim and jeans in the introduction to the book. Then she describes how to select denim for craft projects and some basic techniques for using denim. The main part of the book is divided into chapters containing directions for craft projects. These chapters include: around the house (pillows, bulletin boards, and organizers), handbags and totes, school stuff (scrap books, pencil case), denim Christmas (gift bags, Christmas tree skirt, ornaments), and gifts and things (picture frames, shaving tote, covered tin, basket). Each project starts with lists of required materials and supplies. The instructions for the projects are illustrated with high-quality color photographs. For most of the projects, Chauncey provides instructions for either sewing or gluing, so even non-sewers can try their hand. In order to undertake the projects in this book, a glue gun is practically indispensable, and a sewing machine highly recommended.
Many of the projects seem geared to young teenagers, and the sewing skills required are minimal. As a beginning sewer myself, I found the projects were well within my capabilities (yes, I still sit with the sewing machine manual on my lap when I sew so that I can quickly look up how to thread the machine). One of the strongest features of the book is the ideas that Chauncey provides for using every scrap of jeans. She shows how seams can be made into handles for bags or baskets, and how belt loops can have innumerable uses. I've only followed one of the projects in the book exactly (the shaving tote), but I have borrowed many of the ideas and techniques from the other projects in my own creations. This book is ideal for crafters who are just getting started in reusing denim.
- This book has a great assortment of ideas for using old jeans, from pillows and other household items to personal and gift items. All the projects are illustrated showing different steps in making the item.
- If you are into purses & accessories this would be a good book for you. It didn't fit my needs as I was looking for a way to turn several pairs of jeans into skirts.
- Thanks to this publication, I now know the abbreviated history behind denim and jeans. And why not? Many of us wear them all the time. They are a staple of my wardrobe.
Because of the uniqueness of denim jeans, this has been an answer to my prayers. What to give a teenager for a gift -- it's here. How to dissect a pair of jeans to use its parts, resulting in a wonderful purse, pillow, or even a Christmas Tree skirt is all here in Ms. Chauncey's book.
We're told how to select denim and techniques for denim crafting with projects that qualify as things around the house, handbags and totes, school stuff, denim Christmas, and gifts.
Can't thank the author enough for sharing her creativity and ideas.
This one is a keeper. If you love denim fabric like I do, you will love this book and the projects. My grandchildren love their gifts and so will your friends and loved ones.
- I was interested in recycling my old jeans and based upon other reviews, I purchased this book. This book is pretty good for getting you started and covers all sorts of projects. I made some of the pocketbooks and thought they came out pretty good. I have no problem with using a glue gun along with sewing. With denim, some times you need to. Some of the projects were not for me, but I could see how they would appeal to other people. I think it is great for young people who like to be creative. I would purchase this book just to see if working with denim is for you. Gave me a lot of ideas. I would recommend it for beginners to sewing or crafting.

5 comments about Encyclopaedia of Curtains.
- I would recommend this book to anyone. It guides the reader in making all types of curtains-from sheers to swags to bed linen. It is easy to follow and although no patterns are included, one can easily follow the steps for making the pattern!
- At first glance this book seemed excellent but after reading it it transpired that the instructions are not always very clear. Although an experienced curtain and blind maker at times I could only decipher instructions in the light of existing knowledge. A beginner would sometimes have difficulty in working out what to do. Text and diagrams were often not clearly connected or illustrated. Also, alternative methods of procedures were not highlighted. For example, different ways of dealing with the construction of a roman blind.
- This book goes into detail as how to makes curtains and blinds and has lots of photos and illustrations and makes curtain making very easy.
- This book is full of wonderful and clear information that has helped me not only sell features, but construct them as well. Thank you!
- I own many books of this type, and this one is the most complete guide to window coverings all in one place. I refer to it constantly, even when using other guides to sewing drapes. The instructions are clear and well illustrated with drawings, not photos. Lots of photos in the idea section, however.

3 comments about Lingerie Secrets: Sew a Perfect Fit for Every Body.
- This is a beautiful book, with lots of pictures, including fitting advice. Some patterns are drafted from body measurements, and those can fit everyone. But others are only available in 4 or 5 different sizes, to be copied (and enlarged) from the book. Only one model of bra is included, and that is not a very supportive model, so not suitable for fuller figures. The book give many ideas for night wear and lounge wear, using both woven and knitted fabrics. Both design/drafting and sewing tips are included.
- Many wonderful tips are given to get beginners and those with experience started with sewing basic, conventional lingerie. If you're looking for more provocative lingerie, you'll have to look elsewhere as this book just covers the basics of constructing conventional lingerie---a basic slip, half-slip, full coverage panty, light bra (for smaller sizes) and boxers. Instructions are given for making a pattern for the camisol and slips only. For the bra, panty and boxers, a pattern is given, but will need to be photocopied and expanded. The instructions given in this book are easy to follow and the pictures clearly illustrate the techniques being presented. Highly recommended for those who want to start making conventional lingerie/undies.
- The only bad thing about this book is the copy I got to see is a library book and to buy one, they are currently more than my budget allows! That being said, I love this book. Very ample, clear, color photographic illustrations. Choices on how to do something was given including instructions for a conventional bottom of the line sewing machine (as long as it can zigzag) and serger. I hate books that say there is only one way to sew a seam, she gives optional stitches or tells you how to trim with lace. We also learn how to use different elastics and when to use and how the clear elastic.
One of the best things about this book is she remembers those of us who aren't conventional skinny girls. She tells you how to make maternity panties and even a nursing nightie (which looks like you can take those instructions and make nursing tops also!). For those who may be disabled she explains how to make a full slip that buttons or snaps in the front so there is no need to pull itover your head and also shows how to makes a button closure wrap half slip for those with difficulty dressing themselves.
Even though some of the patterns in the book need enlarged, instructions are also given for how to convert a regular sewing pattern into slips and other garments. Almost all the designs and instructions given would actually be helpful in sewing your conventional camisole, slip and nightie sewing patterns.
I learned a lot about sewing just from reading through this book and will definitely be looking to adding it to my sewing reference library.

4 comments about Sewing for Special Occasions: Bridal, Prom & Evening Dresses (Singer Sewing Reference Library).
- Have no fear about the bride who presents you with three or more patterns, blithely saying I want this skirt, on this bodice with that sleeve, and I want the whole bodice covered with shaped but, uncut lace.
With this book by your side you can make as many changes to a pattern as you would ever need and never go wrong. Step by step pictures and clear instructions will help you through each of the elements of a dress - bodice, skirt, final construction and tell you when to apply a particular embellishing technique. The book also offers all you need to know about special details such as pressing and fitting. Throw out the pattern instructions, follow the book and kiss the bride.
- The signature style of the Singer Sewing Reference Series, this book is chock full of photographs. It also contains simple concise directions to make bridal and eveningwear. It is a great accompaniment to pattern instructions.
- I bought this book to help me to construct a dress for my daughter but I soon found that much is assumed by the author and very little in depth detail given. The photos are wonderful, however there is no follow-up with where to buy the patterns or fabrics depicted in the book. Current catalogs in stores do not have any gowns similar to the ones displayed so one would have to have extensive knowledge of drafting patterns if one wished to make a dress similar to any of the ones in the book. It was also difficult to locate some of the sewing notions listed and I got some strange looks from the sales clerks. This is really a very brief 'ideas' book only and quite unlike the usual in depth Singer publications. If you're looking for a comprehensive guide to bridal fashion sewing don't buy this book.
- I bought this book to help me understand more about French bustling, but it has so much more that will be helpful to me in the future when making wedding gowns and other special occasion apparel for customers.

3 comments about Ribbon Star Quilts.
- Stars seem to be a popular theme for quilts in 2007 and 2008. Ms. Mahoney's book, RIBBON STAR QUILTS, provide you five beautiful star quilts to keep you busy.
The first section gives instructions on making the basic block used in her Ribbon pattern. Then each project has a color photo of the finished quilt, along with a materials list and cutting chart. This cutting chart makes it so easy to follow which fabric, the number needed, the size to cut and what that piece will be used for. I wish more patterns were written with this type of chart.
Lots of diagrams are included in the instructions for making the blocks. The finishing of each quilt is left up to the maker's own tastes although a quilt pattern is provided if you wish to use it. A second color way is shown at the end of the project. You can read about the author at the end of the book.
With the basic block provided in this book, you can make dozens of wonderful star quilts from you own stash of fabrics. Let your imagination go wild.
- This book is short, with only one basic pattern, but nice options available for making it. If you want to make the cover pattern, the book is worth it. If you are looking for a book with more than this pattern, go onto another book. I liked it, but was a bit disappointed in finding out only one quilt was in it.
- Nancy Mahoney's RIBBON STAR QUILTS offers five quilts with traditional-style blocks enhanced with woven ribbon illusions, and builds ideas upon these for more ribbon quilting projects. Numerous full-sized and small color photos supplement easy how-to directions offering plenty of ideas and flexibility for changes and embellishments.

4 comments about Mosaic Applique.
- Ten patterns for mosaics ranging from a cat to a dragonfly or a flower come with three pull-out pattern sheets, fabric tips, and details on applique techniques, fused borders and more. MOSAIC APPLIQUE is a fine choice for quilters who want to add applique designs to quilting projects: it comes from an Australian quilters who has designed her own fashions and who here provides easy steps to unique creations. Quilters seeking an introduction to mosaic techniques will find this an easy, eye-catching pick.
- although this book has interesting ideas, it seems very limited in ways to adapt the applications.
- I purchased this Australian writers book as a present for my wife, an avid quilter.
I have watched and listened to the gasps of admiration from her and her craft group of ladies. The book has been the subject of much planning by the group at each weekly meeting and I now wait with anticipation for the increased spending at our local craft outlet.
This is good because every dollar she spends on her craft I get to spend on my sports car. I can see a complete engine rebuild being possible!
- Fantastic book. Just what I wanted. I have my own designs but didn't know how to go about doing them. This book outlines the technique perfectly. Arrived pronto. Thanks. Joy O'Brien

2 comments about The Costume Book: The Non-Professional's Guide to Professional Results (Schiffer Book for Designers).
- Mary Burke Morris' The Costume Book requires intermediate to advanced sewing skills and a prior interest in costume creation, but any working with theater or dance productions who regularly sew such costumes will find it an invaluable reference. Chapters come packed with photos and line drawings, overviews of basic design principles, and instructions which quickly lend to production efforts.
- While this is a good resource for those of us who are experienced sewers, there is not much helpful information on theatrical costuming. Starting about 1/3 of the way through the book there are chapters on ballet, irish dance, ballroom dance, etc. and are very useful if that's the type of costuming you're involved with. The photographs of the costumes used in historical re-enactments are simply, amazing, and probably useful if that's what you're looking for. I would say this book is very light on theatrical costuming, and while I've gotten some good tips from the book that I've actually used (an easy way to make a 9 gore skirt w/o a pattern), it mostly gets ignored.

2 comments about Linen and Cotton: Classic Sewing Techniques for Great Results (Focus on Fabric).
- I have enjoyed sewing, but have not had time to do any of it for the last few years. Over the last 3, however, I have really gotten "in to" linens, crochet, and embroidery. I don't know what hit me! I have had a college class in sewing, good pointers from a few and have occasionally browsed a couple of books, so take this review with that knowledge. I have worked my way through half of the book, now, and have learned several pointers and have piqued my interest and desire to sew again even more. I think the book is very enjoyable, and the only reason that I didn't rate it higher, is that, I'm not sure if my judgement would be critical. There should be some rating scheme for the reviewers, also! I don't know how this compares to others, but I am actually _reading_ it -- through and through, not just skipping. Enjoy!
- I love sewing and I bought this book as cotton and linen are among my favorite fabrics to use when I am making shirts, blouses skirt and dresses.
The first part of this book includes information (without getting too technical) on these two types of fabric with emphasis on their numerous qualities, types, processing, weaves, dyeing techniques and finishes. Also included are a number of sample garments that cover a range of styles fabrication and techniques to show how versatile garments one can make (even a wedding gown!!) out of linen or cotton. The author then proceeds to describe various techniques one can apply to achieve great results with the use of very clear diagrams and photographs. This part of the book I found to be the most fascinating. There is a list of decorative seam treatments and seam finishes that look great on these two fabrics. The author includes techniques on different waistline treatments one can apply in skirts or pants. Better yet, everyone who works with these fabrics should check out the information on the use and application of interfacings, underlinings, facings and linings. Instructions on the use of sleeve heads, staystitching and inner stay tape are also included as well as on the application of decorative details such as pleats, gathers, godets and angled seams, topstitching, decorative stitching, application of lace, binding and even pockets. Finally she concentrates on a number of finishing details regarding closures (zippers, buttons, hooks and eyes, plackets etc.) hems and others. This book is not intended to provide information on how to make shirts, skirts etc. as it is a fiber-oriented and not a garment-oriented book. The author has managed to write a book with so much information and interesting techniques to apply when working with these fabrics (to give structure, embellish, or add the right finishing detail) that I find it to be most valuable to me. Do try these at home!!
