1 comments about Fell's Guide to Operating Shortwave Radio.
- It would be morally wrong for me to give this book anything less than five stars, seeing as it was written by my granfather. However, while, this book is outdated by some years it is extremely informative and quite interesting to read. And for the radio lover, electrician, or engineer this book can be useful for a weekend project with children.

2 comments about Arrl Operating Manual (Radio Amateur's Library, No 71).
- This is one of those books you can pick up and read random chapters, or even individual pages and find value. The book is organized topically and covers a wide variety of interests, so whether your interest is RTTY, DX, moonbounce, or whatever, you'll likely find it covered here - not just in shallow survey form, either (in spite of its wide coverage), but with usable advice and perspective. I think this is one of ARRL's better titles, along with their license manuals and the Antenna Book. Highly recommended for the newer ham or experienced ham curious about unfamiliar operating modes.
- And another fine book, all about the operation of HAM. Everything from rules to help to projects !

5 comments about Radio Handbook.
- This is an fundamental book for the amateur and the beginers
- This book is a must have for any library. If you are interested in homebrewing then you need this book. Its filled with lots of schematics and details.
- But they are not mutually exclusive. Every ham needs this book. Especially if you ever want to build (or dream) a "real" RF amplifier. Buy this book before they go out of print
- ...PrimeParts.net says they still have a few in stock; I just ordered one earlier today. Web link: http://www.primeparts.net/Books/books.shtml
Update: The book arrived and I've been perusing the contents. It's an absolutely beautiful book -- the pictures are crisp and clear. The technical content is quite good, although I would caution that the technical details are closer to what you find in something like the ARRL Handbook or perhaps Experimental Methods in RF Design than, say, Bowick's or Hayward's RF Design (text) books.
It is true that some of the content is dated: most of the amplifiers are tube-based and while some designs are perfectly workable as presented, today there are much more straightforward approaches using, e.g., microcontrollers and a bit of analog 'glue.' (Particularly amusing: He catalogs the 'typical home computer' as having 64KB. :-) ) Still, there's a lot that can be learned from a classic book such as this, and even if the implementations have changed over time, the fundamentals are timeless; people who downgrade books such as this for being 'obsolete' are typically those who are only seeking a cursory understanding of the subject matter.
- If you missed out on the technology prior to 1970s because you were born after that, this book really helps you catch up.
There are quite a no. of errors in the formula and schematics, by and large can be ignored if you are looking for a general understanding on the subject and not an indepth product design / engineering knowledge.
Especially, the High Power RF amplifier design & construction and the Antenna chapters are very interesting and useful, I consider these are truely Bill Orr's home turf.
I have almost all the editions of this book and I find the last edition to be a real good value for money compared to most of the ARRL Handbooks
published after 1994.

2 comments about Radios by Hallicrafters: With Price Guide (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
- For the thousands of shortwave listeners and hams who were introduced to the wonder of radio - this is a book that will re-kindle the wonder. For collectors of vintage TV's, BC table radios and military radios, no other reference details these rare products.
Radios by Hallicrafters is logically divided into product prefixes. Most products have one or more pictures, with brief descriptions, production dates and orginal price. A useful index of market values is provided, as well as a history of the company and other Hallicrafters information. Chuck's love for Hallicrafters products is evident, and his book is well dog-eared by serious Hallicrafters collectors. - The Hallicrafters Collectors Association.
- My first shortwave receiver, as a 12 year old, was a Hallicafters S-38. I thought it was a really impressive looking radio then and have always loved the hallicrafters looks and the performance of their top end receivers. Chuck Dachis has clearly wrote the most complete reference for all the products made by Hallicrafters. As a collector and restorer of tube type radios the book has been an invaluable reference. The only down side is I found more models and accessories that I would like to add to my collection. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves old radios.

3 comments about Radio Monitoring: The How-To Guide.
- An extremely useful, easy-to-read introduction to the world of shortwave radio, long distance AM listening, scanning, and ham radio. Skip Arey does an admirable job in producing a book that provides a thorough explanation of the basics, while providing plenty of reference material for the more seasoned listener. Covers the whole spectrum of radio monitoring in a warm, friendly style. Recievers, antennas, monitoring techniques, it's all there. Destined to become a classic.
- This book is an excellent beginners book, and if you have a boring life and want to put some interest into it, this is the book for you! I do want to warn you though that this is a book for beginners only!
- This is the definitive, yet easy to read guide on the monitoring hobby. Those of you who have been reading Uncle Skip's work in Monitoring Times or The All Ohio Scanner Club Newsletter will recognize some of his no-nonsense approaches to the various sub-categories of the monitoring hobby.
Skip covers all areas of the Radio hobby from AM-DXing to Scanning. This book is a must for any radio hobbyist.
