  1. Yike! Sure hope I'm the only one at the Old Fogies Senior Center with this book.I'll be the champ in no time.

  2. The 370 puzzles in this book will keep you occupied for some time and will greatly improve your play. Do yourself a favor and work through each one carefully, resorting to the solutions only if you are absolutely desperate. Most of these can be solved mentally, but in some cases the use of board and pieces will make the concepts more clear. The small pocket size format of the book makes it very good to take along and use during down-time such as waiting for doctors appointments and the like. The serious student of checkers really ought to have this book.

  3. Wow - what a fun book that was! This book has so many well thought out problems, that your game has to improve the first time through. I've been through this book several times now, increasing my speed (and mostly my technique) while getting as much enjoyment as the first time through. When using my newly acquired skills in real games, I've "Dazzled" more than a couple of players; having your opponent say "I didn't even see that coming" is a direct result of the insight gained reading this book. This book seemed free of errors (i.e. all problems were solvable and all problem numbers matched their corresponding solution number). I look at a checker board with a little more confidence now, and take my hat off to Robert Pike. I would recommend this book to anyone without reservation.

  1. This is a great book for the sudoku addict to carry on vacation. Puzzles range from very laid-back to rather fiendish (including some jigsaw and giant). I recently survived a trip across the Atlantic by working on ever less demanding puzzles as my fatigue increased. I also used some of the really simple puzzles to answer "how on earth do those work?" during family visits. Even though I often work on super-difficult puzzles, this is not a boring book for me.

  2. The book is good, not too expencive, a lot of puzzles for everybody... But what's with the times? I timed about half the puzzles I did and I scored the highest amount of points easely every time, and then the "Carol's time" that shows up every ten puzzles or so. I beat 'Carol' every time too and SHE has the title "Sudoku Expert". I'm sorry, but that just bugs me. If you're gonna give categories of what's good and what's not yet so good, make categories that will push people to be better.
Sudoku makers don't realise that there are people who aren't beginners anymore...
Besides that, the book's pretty okay

  3. My dad loves Sudoku puzzles. I got this for him for Christmas last year, and he is almost done with the entire book. He does about a puzzle or 2 a day, and the book has a place right next to his recliner. It made an excellent stocking stuffer. Now I am off to get him another one by Carol Vorderman since he liked this one so much.

  4. If you're an absolute beginner to Sudoku this book might be a good start. There's a large quantity of puzzles progressing up through various difficulty levels, and some introductory Sudoku tips to get you started.

If you are not a beginner this book has little to offer. There are four grades of puzzles, but I can't imagine anyone of even modest skill wasting time on easy, medium, or "difficult" puzzles, all of which are the Sudoku equivalent of word searches (i.e., no logic involved). The "super difficult" puzzles are only moderately challenging at best, but there's no reason to carry around a book this large when you're only going to use 1/4 of it. The book attempts to add an additional challenge by including a time-based scoring system, but the time allotted is so ridiculously long, if you don't get the top score it's probably because you fell asleep.

On the plus side there are a couple of Sudoku variations like "Squiffy Sudoku," but there are only 20 total puzzles and there's no point in buying the entire book just for those.

If you're a beginner who wants a light diversion this might be a worthwhile book just because of the large number of puzzles included, but for everyone else there are better choices.

  5. This is the best sudoku book I have found. Whoever said only for beginners must be a total genius. I have worked on this book for a long time, maybe over a year now, and bring it whenever I go on a trip. I ran out of Mediums and did some Difficults and then I just went to some beginners ones to play around with and they were slightly enough challenging to keep me interested.

My only problem is what to replace this with as Carol has not come out with another one.

The only other thing is that it is a little big to carry in my bag on a trip and would like to get some smaller ones for trips.

But there seemed to be enough challenge with even the Easy ones and the Difficult ones are not so insanely difficult that you can't get them with a little work. The Mediums are just perfect, make you think and are challenging enough to be fun.

  1. The "game" format makes this book very user-friendly and not threatening. The Sharper Mind had a similar approach was was more practical in its approach to everyday situations: remembering names, dates, etc.

  1. I loved this book. The cryptos are great for beginners. Not only are the cryptos fun to do, the quotes are fun to read. I highly recommend this book and I hope that the author writes another book because the year is almost over.

  2. Caution! These cryptograms were pulled from another puzzle book called "Puzzles for a Super-Mind Workout." I'm in the midst of doing these very same puzzles from the other book. These are the exact same puzzles with another title.

Oh yes, the cryptograms are great--funny, interesting, quotable. You'll enjoy. Just don't buy this book if you've done the ones from the other book.
