5 comments about Origami to Astonish and Amuse.
  1. This has to be the definitive book on really incredible origami. If you are a beginner, there are a few models in it you can do, but much of the content is fairly difficult, even for the experienced origami craftsperson. There are a number of models made from dollar bills, which is what I was looking for. What I didn't expect was the encyclopedic nature of the models. There is something there for everyone. The author has a pretty quirky sense of humor that one may or may not appreciate. He is definitely an artist in every sense of the word.

  2. This is one of the best books in my origami collection. The models are unique - buying this book is not another case of getting only 10% new models - they are all new and strangely enough, amusing!

I love that some of the models offer a lot of challenge, whereas others are easy to fold (you should see my invisible duck!)

Defiantly a book that should be in every origami enthusiasts collection.

  3. Truly astonishing and positively amusing. A fabulous use of an ancient technique. Pushing the limits to new heights.

  4. I love the sense of humor in Jeremy Shafer's creations. There's a nice range of models in here, from moderately accessible ones to the very difficult. When I got frustrated with one model, I put it down and just enjoyed reading the book. Jeremy's lighthearted jokes interspersed through the models made it fun.

  5. Origami to Astonish and Amuse is Jeremy Shafer's first and only book so far (as far as I know).
The models vary from the simple baby bird to the complex eight interlocking rings. There is even a model that is made from a t-shirt! It has clear and sometimes humorous diagrams and has a black and white picture for each model. Many of the models are action models and a few used for magic tricks. It also has crease patterns for models like the Flasher Supreme, Flasher Marble Maze, Dromenon Labyrinth, Walker, and even the famous Flasher Big Bang! It is really worth buying the book. Beginners and experts will enjoy folding the models in this great book. It is definitely 5 stars!!!

5 comments about The Complete Book of Origami: Step-by Step Instructions in Over 1000 Diagrams (Origami).
  1. The author of "The Complete Book of Origami" has become notorious for producing some of the most advanced origami models in the literature and this book contains a range of models which cannot be considered anything but difficult. Most of the pieces will not be possible from ordinary paper but will require either foil or very thin bank weight paper to work well. Wet folding would also be suitable for some of the models though the diagrams for the elephant sail into a patch of fog when making its behind!

Be prepared to spend some hours making each piece and you may well find yourself starting over again several times until a series of folding procedures becomes clear.

That said the book contains some excellent models - I have always liked the Cuckoo Clock and the Viking Ship, and can confirm that the action pieces really do work.

The diagrams are hand drawn rather than computerised which may explain the level of verbal instruction; however some of the sets of folds are very complex and the verbal instructions provide that much needed extra to understand what is going on.

This is a book for the seasoned folder and most paper folders who have reached the high intermediate to advanced skill level will enjoy it.

  2. I agree with several of the reviewers here. As a "purist" I object to models that don't start with a square, of which there are many here. I am also bothered by measurements that do not arise from the creases themselves (eg "fold into thirds".) Finally, Lang jumps from very easy to very advanced, with virtually nothing in-between (and uses harder folding sequences than neccessary IMO, Montroll achieves similar complexity in his finished models with far less difficulty.)
If you are willing to look past these objections, the finished models themselves are frequently amazing.

  3. this book would fit nicely on a shelf in bill gates mansion. If you're a hardcore nerd and grew up within the 80s and 70s, played with erector sets and studied quantum physics at the age of 2 then you may be able to decode the rocket science behind the drawings and instructions given in this book. nay on the origamay

  4. An excellent book for beginners and continuing students of origami. Many color photo step-by-step illustrations of simple and more complicated models. Well worth buying.

  5. This book has some of the most original models I've seen among origami books (including a particularly impressive clock). However, many of the instructions are vague or extremely difficult to fold as described. Some of the more advanced models will take lots of experimentation to figure out what the intended fold is.

  1. the papers are double-sided and the colors are vibrant. the patterns don't distract from any design you choose to fold. i only wish i had bought two!

  2. My six year old son loves the origami paper because of it's fun and interesting colors. Unlike traditional origami paper which is colored on one side and white on the other, this paper is colored on both sides. Most of the paper has a dark side and a light side which makes it easier for beginners to know which way to fold. It is good paper and good fun!

5 comments about Origami Jewelry: More Than 40 Exquisite Designs to Fold and Wear.
  1. Origami Jewelry: More Than 40 Exquisite Designs to Fold and Wear Very nice presentation. Instructions and diagrams are fairly easy to understand. The pictures of the finished fold are nicely shown. I've been doing origami for 30 yrs and never thought of making jewelry. You always learn new things.

  2. I am relatively new to Origami so I found this book a welcome addition to the library, it covers the obligatory choosing of papers, tools to use and importantly for newbies a good solid instructional section on the "basic folds". The jewellery created was quiet nice, a little kitsch for my personal taste, but easily accomplished with a bit of practice.

The big thing for me though came with Metal Clay "paper", I am primarily a jewellery artist and use Metal clay a lot, I love the product of silver sheet clay or paper clay as some people call it as I can fold this like paper in origami styles and then fire it to produce minature fine silver jewellery. Good ideas in the book for me to transfer to silver replicas.

The diagrams were clear, easy to understand and photographed well. Thank you Ayako for a good book.

  3. As someone who is a novice I found this book relatively easy to follow. I have been doing origami for a long time, but I am not consistent with it. It is something I love and I know basics, but not something I am constantly working to excel at, even though I wish I had the time to. With a stressful job I needed an outlet and so have taken origami up again to relax and have a creative outlet. I saw this book and thought, wow how cool. I really want to try this. I am more than happy with my impulse purchase. The pictures are clear and concise. She gives you all the basic folds in the front so you don't have to go looking in other materials for them. The author also allows your creative juices to flow. She shows many different project pictures with the same origami shape. This allowed me to take her projects one step further and really make them my own. I have never made jewelry before (other than macaroni necklaces in kindergarten) and she details all the tools and materials you need. Really, if this peeks your interest, the take the plunge and buy it. You won't be disappointed.

  4. I ordered this book without high hopes and was pleasantly surprised. Finally, an origami jewelry book that goes through the process step by step with clear photos as a guide. All the questions I had regarding origami jewelry making were answered. In the past, much of my paper jewelry making was based on guesswork.

  5. What a creative and practical book! I love origami and have incorporated it into my card making, gift wrapping, decorating, and table setting for years. However, I had never made jewelry with it. The techniques in the book have opened a whole new area of possiblilites for me.

5 comments about The Lost Art of Towel Origami.
  1. I was very interested in learning Towel Origami. The size of the pieces and the number of towels needed to create them made the task almost impossible.

  2. This book contains many fun ways of shaping towels to give as gifts, or to decorate the towels you leave out for guests. While I agree that it's not really origami, it's still a lot of fun and a very cute idea.

All of the projects that I've tried have worked out.

The book itself would make a good gift for any quirky people that you know.

  3. Pinson Fulfillment - excellent service and quick delivery of this book ordered from Amazon. Thank You.

  4. I was pretty disappointed with this book and cannot really recommend it. First, over half of the designs are pretty boring and not really worth doing (Lips? A plain heart? Boring.) The rest of them seem to all use different sizes and number of towels. To do the palm tree you need FIVE hand towels. I for one don't generally keep *that* many towels of the same color lying around. The other main problem is the directions are not terribly clear. For instance, the instructions for the dog tell me to roll up the long ends into the middle, and after trying this a couple times, and wondering why it wasn't working, I realized it really wanted you to roll the *short* ends into the middle. Clear errors like this make it annoying to use and just not worth paying for when there are other cheap and even free sources out there for this material (try a google search for "towel folding" or "towel origami".)

  5. This is just fun - like the towel figures on a cruise ship. I gave this as a gift and will probably order more.

5 comments about Origami Paper Pattern: 49 Sheets (Origami Paper Packs) (Origami Paper Packs).
  1. I was looking for double sided different colored paper. But I found only patterned papers in it. Those who want to buy this product kindly validate your need against what is inside. Here are some of the information.
    1. All 49 sheets are single side (One side it is white and other side it is colored).
    2. All 49 sheets got patterns like little flower outline or some pattern.

    These are good fro beginners.

  2. this is high quality paper for all oragami projects. We have enjoyed using it and will be buying more!

  3. Good basic one-sided origami paper with a nice selection of traditional patterns. Not as good as the Japanese paper, but perfectly fine for kids.

  4. Since this was a gift, I cannot comment on the substance. I do not know how to do oragami, so make no judgement.

  5. MY SON HAD A PROJECT ON JAPAN AND HE USED THIS SUBJECT TO TALK ABOUT. IT WAS EASY AND FUN AND HE GOT AN A ON THE PROJECT.

  1. As a beginner, this was a nice set of paper to work with. Lot's of colors to start and easy to fold..

  2. This set of origami paper was very convenient and my 8 year old daughter had a lot of fun using it. Not to mention the convenience of having it shipped right to our mailbox. She loves to get mail and packages. The price was very reasonable too.

  3. The paper was fine. I used it with a basic origami book. My group of 7 kids went through it all in about an hour. It probably would have been a better value if I bought it at the local craft store.

  4. I thought the paper would be thiner, but it has a substantial feel to it.

  2. The item I received was never shipped to the correct location. I got a return label and sent the original back. I re-ordered with the correct shipping location and it STILL didn't get shipped to the correct location. I give up! I won't order any more. When I call your company, I can never talk to a REAL person. BAD business.

  1. i got this for my 6 kids and they've used it so much, the pages are falling out.

  2. I like this book because the pictures and instructions were very clear. The difficulty of each piece is labeled. It is a good book for teaching children the art of Origami.

  3. This book had several origami projects that every single student I had could be successful at. Good instructions. Very pleased.

  4. I brought two of these books for my son and they were both easy to use and alot of fun.

  5. This is a good starter book as it claims to be.. but as I leafed through it I realized that anyone who has had even some remote experience with origami or paper crafts will find this book ... perhaps too basic.

I was hoping for at least a couple of more 'exciting' or slightly advanced projects at the end of the book, but the book stays simple till the end. Also, paper with both coloured sides looks better even for some of the basic designs.

Other than that, it offers exactly what it says on the cover.
