  1. This book, at $20, is essentially a rather pricey catalog of Hugh Ehrman needlepoint kits, with a few samples. The cover promises a "glorious selection of more than 40 needlepoint creations", but many of these, really the most attractive ones, are only pictured and described. The number of projects for which actual instructions are given is only 12. I did find two or three projects that I might want to work, but I would say the purpose of this book is mostly inspiration (and marketing), not hands-on instruction.

  1. This wonderful book is simply a reprint of a much older book by Kaffe, and the description fails to reveal this. New cover, new photo, old book.

  2. Firstly, this is a reprint of the Glorious Needlepoint that went out of print. Not a bad thing.

Secondly, if you love Victoriana, this is a great book. Kaffee fine needlepoint patterns. My utter favorite is the Fassett is fascinated by overstuffed patterns and the huge flora of the Victorian age, plus the visual excitement of clutter and bric-a-brac. He has been able to translate his art into some very Victorian kittens, complete with sweet expressions and sugary pink bow. This design even makes my manly (but cat-loving) husband melt.

  1. I've had this book for a long time just enjoying the pictures and Ms. Sorensen's discussion of the histories, origins and meaning of the motifs in Oriental rugs. The book is put together in an extremely organized and helpful fashion: each project is shown in a glossy color picture in use in a typical home, whether as a wall hanging, throw pillows, or upholstered stool. (This gives you a good idea how it will look in your home.) Each project is also shown in a full-on, close-up color pic displaying all the detail. She explains the background of every design. Each is charted in an extremely interesting way: she has separated the different "layers" of each section such that you stitch only 1 or 2 colors at a time. Once you finish the first couple colors, you go on to the next chart which shows the same section but displays 1 or 2 other colors that overlay the previous chart. So there are 2 or 3 charts for each section of a rug. Very easy to follow. Amazingly all the rugs have only 4 to 7 colors! My only concern has been that just 1/2 of each carpet has been charted and you're supposed to use a mirror to stitch the other half. Fortunately, now, we can scan and print the reverse pages.

What prompted me to purchase the book was the gorgeous red multiple-bordered carpet on the front cover. I finally dove in and am cross stitching the "Laver Kerman" carpet with #8 pearl cotton on 16-count aida. While this is one of the bigger projects at about 300 by 450 stitches, the stitching goes very quickly--even for this slow stitcher. Smaller charts are only 80 by 80 stitches. I already get many compliments on it though I'm only halfway done. This is one project not destined to become a UFO. I have my eye set on the next one as well.

If you like Persian carpets, needlepoint or cross stitch, this is one book you need to get. Highly recommended.

  1. I like having Maggie Lane's books on chinese needlepoint. The only one I didn't have, I just ordere. I think this was my favorite book of hers. More Needlepoint Design is also a very good book. She tried to make them, I think, as copies of actual Chinese neelepoint items. There alot of nice designs in blue. It would be pretty easy to chose your own brand and yarn type. The colors used in the book are dull, but could be changed. The most color in the books was this one. There aren't complex color schemes. I haven't stitched on any of the designs because I'm not chinese, but the books are still very interesting to have in my collection. I had considere using the design on the cover. I like that one the best of the designs she has in her books. They are interesting books.

  1. This is the best written quilt book I have purchased in a long time. Also, it's the first time I've wanted to make one of every pattern. The author's imaginative borders are inspirational. I already bought one for a gift and will be ordering more for other quilting friends. Way to go Ms. L!

  2. An excellent book for both beginning & experienced quilters. Each and every quilt in the book has been made from start to finish by the author, this is quite rare. Ms Laquidara is well known for the clarity of her instructions, her borders are downright inspirational. I bought one for myself and just ordered two more for Christmas gifts.

For the lady who wanted to know how to enlarge the quilts - simply add rows horizontally or vertically, or both until desired size is achieved.

  3. I just received this book and I am so excited about the patterns! Judy Laquidara has taken the standard nine-patch and made something really special. The instructions are easy to read and I really love how she has given very simple fabric requirements for each quilt.

  4. Last night I sat down and read through it. I LOVE the way it is done. One of the best books for directions I have ever seen. I love the quilts too. Lots of good designs to choose from. Great job, Judy ! ! ! I think it is one of the best books out there.

  5. Judy L. Laquidara's NINE-PATCH EXTRAVAGANZA provides 12 designs which show how to change a classic patchwork block into a fine full-sized quilt project. With unique color placements, eye-catching borders and instructions easy enough for beginners, this handbook is a top pick for any beginner and many a quilter who already has some nine-patch basics down, but seeks more innovation.

  1. This book is a "must have" for your stitchery library. If you want to try something new, these 3-D houses are adorable! I plan on using ALL of the patterns. It has inspired me to design a few of my own. I am going to design a Christmas village for my Christmas tree this year and use metallic threads.

  2. Great projects in 3D. Very innovative and easy to understand directions.
