4 comments about Dollhouse Style.
  1. This book features dollhouse rooms specializing in certain historic areas including Renaissance (the Tudor dining room), the Colonial dining room, and the 1950's style diner. My favor is the curiosity shop. It is so full of detailed items that you just can't believe it's a dollhouse.

The photos cover two whole pages together and really provide an up close look at the way the rooms were made, etc. In addition to the beautiful photos, the author also includes the basics of dollhouse accessories (how to make miniature food, furniture, etc). She includes selected projects from each period room and shows you how to reproduce it using simple materials such as glue and paint. Her instructions are clear, simple, and easy. Some people might not like the fact that not all of the items are included but that's ok. I think from the selected instructions and the inspiration you're bound to get from this book, you'll be able to figure out how to make them yourself.

  2. Wow... This book is as good as travelling to Europe and visiting stately homes. The attention to detail is stunning and I loved the ornate rooms 17th & 18th centaury rooms. Any miniature maker who is looking for inspiration and has an interest in history should buy this book.

As with her previous book it has a European slant and I would love for her to visit the US and do a book on period American houses.

My advice is buy this book and never listen to nay sayers! Keep up the good work

  3. If you are looking for that reference book for everything-you-need-to-know about miniatures and how to create them, then this is the perfect edition for you. Everything in this publication is imaginative and very useful for those who wish to make their own miniatures from scratch. The ideas for room settings are unique and there's something to please all ages and generations. I found it an extremely well set out volume and have some new ideas for future projects. Very recommended.

  4. I have emjoyed this book immensely at first reading. I bought it inorder to make the modern livingroom featured in the back of the book. The pictures are fantastic and clear and almost lifesize. The directions for making the furniture and accessories are concise and readable. The author really took the time to tell us how to create the same beautiful rooms she herself built and decorated. Bravo to the author and her photographer! My favorite rooms next to the modern livingroom is the country kitchen and the red dinner. I am a fan of Kathy Dalmeny for life!

5 comments about Making Miniature Flowers With Polymer Clay.
  1. Step-by-step instructions on how to make seven different flowers using polymer clay. Detailed diagrams and tips (from tools and materials to color blending). Good book for beginner flower artists in the polymer clay medium. Provides list of sources and references.

  2. I have many books on polymer clay and this is one of my favorites! The techiques show here can be applied to any sculpture but what impressed me was how lifelike these projects look! And with such detailed explanations and illustrations it is an easy jump to use these techiques to create flowers of your own choice. I have made figures from polymer clay for 7 years now and most books are repetitive to me, I found this one re-energized my creative juices and gave me something new to make, I now make minature flowers to adorn some of my figures and have been pleased with the new dimension it adds.

  3. This is a must-have book for anyone wanting to learn to make beautiful miniature flowers. It is great book for all levels, even those who have never worked with polymer clay.

At first glance I though it would be hard and very time consuming. I was wrong. I was amazed at how easy it really was. In less than two hours, I had a very impressive looking rose bud.

The author first covers materials and how to work with polymer clay. Included templates help you judge size & shape. Each part of every flower is then explained step by step. Numerous color photos help to guide you.

Flowers covered include roses, dogwood, daisies, cherry blossoms, pansies, daffodils, and irises. There are a few projects in the back showing you how to frame the flowers and make jewelry or ornaments out of them.

  4. This was the first book I ever bought on polymer clay. I barely knew what polymer clay was - I looked in the book, thought "I can do that", bought some polymer clay and by that evening was making fabulous roses. This was the perfect introductory book - the books I have subsequently purchased and used would have scared me off. This is the basics, how to condition the clay, roll it into balls, make the shapes, assemble them, bake, and maybe paint a little. No color palettes, skinner blends, no fancy equipment - just clay, your hands, some wax paper, cornstarch, scissors, toothpicks and an oven. The instructions are incredibly detailed, the pictures perfect - Quast doesn't leave you to try to figure out a single thing. No matter how "uncrafty" or unartistic you are, the projects in this book will make you think you were born for the art of polymer clay. The book covers roses, dogwood blossoms, daisies, cherry blossoms, pansies, daffodils and irises, and ends by showing you some great jewelry and decorative household items you can make.

  5. This is the only book on this subject that I know of, so it's better than nothing. But it's frustrating throughout because the photos depict the author's hands better than the items she is holding. The verbal instructions are fairly good, but in this topic better pictures are a must. Maybe there will be a second edition with this problem corrected. Meanwhile, enjoy her pretty hands.

  1. There are many projects in this book, but they're mostly for furniture, and in plain wood. More accessories would have been welcome.

And it's better suited for beginners. More experienced miniaturists might be disappointed.

  2. I enjoyed this book because I've yet to seen one including much information on miniature decorating styles of the 1930's and 40's. Admittedly there are more wood crafts than I had hoped for, but the flavor of the book, the fun layout, and period details give one inspiration for creating their own unique projects.

  3. This book is easy to follow and Jane Harrop has made the detail easy to understand, even for the beginner. The templates are all true to size and that makes for easy assembly, and the follow up for each project gives you a chance to make sure you have put it together correctly, although I can't say that mine look as professional as Janes.
I didn't move to the UK until the 1970's for eight years, but found that quite a few of the items were still being used even then. Those years made quite an impression on a lot of people and I think there are more and more miniaturists looking to that era.

  4. Like all Jane Harrop's books, this one gives clear, easy-to-follow directions for the mini maker who wants to do more modern minis than the usual Tudor, Victorian and Edwardian ones on offer. Though most definitely British, it's easy for Yanks to follow and the pix and projects are charming and come out well.

  1. Pretty good book. It has lots of pictures and ideas in it for your own doll house. I wish that I had seen the table of contents before I bought it. It didn't have much victorian stuff in it.

  2. This is a wonderful book with many great ideas for making dollhouses. It explains each type of house from the most prominent eras. Tudor, Georgian, Regency, Victorian, Edwardian, and onward just to name a few. It is clearly set up and a joy to read. There are many great color pictures to go along with the text.

  3. THis book is the best I have ever seen .The subject is meant for more than a childs plaything and obviously a great hobby.. My younest grandaughter wants poppy to make all of the houses in the book.. well that is interesting and the details in the book make for dreams..

5 comments about Making Miniature Gardens (Master Craftsmen).
  1. Can be used by the new miniaturist as well as the experienced. Good color photos and easy instructions using items found easily. Full sized patterns for some plans. Patterns and plans for the whole garden from walls to tools to vegetables to a patio chair. A truly enjoyable read. Can't wait to try the specific flowers listed in the book.

  2. A fantastic, helpful and well done book! Each item is carefully described and the directions are easy to follow. You won't believe how easy and inexpensive it is to make these gorgeous little creations. Inspiring! I have made several of the items portrayed in the book and I am amazed at how well they came out the very first time! I'm sure you will treasure this jewel as much as I do!

  3. Excellent book;great pictures and diagrams. I would highly reccommend to anyone

  4. "Choose from a variety of realistic miniature plants that range from quick and simple models to meticulously detailed reproductions. Full plans and instructions are provided for eight projects: Trellis Arch, Walled Garden, Patio Garden Pond and Rockery, Cottage Garden, Greenhouse Garden, Kitchen Garden, and Window Boxes." (description from Alibris)
I've always been intrigued by dollhouses and miniature furniture, but had never thought to provide a tiny garden to go with it. This is great for miniature enthusiasts.

  5. I recently ordered this book and was delighted when I opened it. I was a lot better than I thought it would be. It is color throughout, with specific detailed directions on how to create many specific types of flowers (begonia, several rose types, camellia, hollyhocks, poppy, geranium, delphinium, larkspur, nasturtium, petunia, iris, pansy, chrysanthemum, dahlia, carnation, & aster). All look quite realistic, except the pansy (too bad, its my favorite flower). It also describes how to put together many specific garden types, including a water effect. The water technique is quite a bit easier to do than some I've seen with model railroad techniques, but reasonably realistic. The book also details how to make several different garden furniture pieces, an added suprise I hadn't expected. Overall a great book with detailed color photos. Excellent!

5 comments about The Doll's Dressmaker: The Complete Pattern Book.
  1. The Dolls Dressmaker Book is the most complete pattern book I have ever found. It includes everything one could want to dress their doll. Clothes, underwear, accessories, hats, shoes. Excellent instruction information on assembly, mix-n-match pieces. Great rcommendations of trims, laces, etc. All full size patterns grouped by size, easy access in back of book.
    I Very Highly recommend.

  2. Book offers a wide range of details and styles that are described in an easy to follow format. Patterns are not difficult and user friendly.

  3. Excellent book with beautiful pictures. Leaves plenty of room to your own creativity. Desciptions are straightforward. It's hard for me to say if it would be good for beginners, since I'm trained in dressmaking and patternmaking, but it seems easy to figure out. I can't think of any book I'd rather use when making doll clothes - it has everything.

  4. Detailed patterns, clear explanations and completed with the needed illustrations. Also some tips to modify the lengths of the patterns or to adapt the suggested model in order to create other dresses. Well done.
I was looking since a while for these kind of books till I discovered the Amazon.com and his large choice of books related to 'Dolls' dresses and furniture and am very satisfied about the quality of their service and deliveries.

  5. Before buying this book, I would buy patterns for doll clothes. Sometimes I bought patterns from big companies like Simplicity and sometimes I bought patterns from small outfits. Of course, they were very specific patterns for only a few outfits for only a few limited dolls. Ms. Dodge's book is like owning every pattern for every doll ever created! She provides many basic pattern pieces in a variety of sizes. It will be up to you, however, to design your doll's outfit. Don't worry--the book will show you how! You will also make your own custom pattern pieces in order to get the right fit. This book covers baby dolls, girl dolls and even boy dolls. The only doll that is not represented is the womanly-figured modern fashion doll, but once you have mastered what is covered in this book, you will be able to dress those dolls too. The author provides lots of good, detailed photos and beautiful line drawings of possible outfits to inspire you. My confidence in dressing dolls has increased a hundred-fold. Now I know that if I can dream it, I can achieve it. And you can too!
