2 comments about Gorgeous Leather Crafts: 30 Projects to Stamp, Stencil, Weave & Tool.
  1. I used to do leather craft way back when it was pretty much limited to kitchy country western style motifs. Boy have things changed!! This book drew me in with it's updated stylish designs for home accessories that would complement many decorating styles (there are some killer pillow designs in here!!). The photography is great, there is a nice intro to different leathers, tools, and crafting techniques and the project instructions seem pretty good too.
My only beef with the book is that you must visit the publisher's website for a supplier list of materials (many of the materials required for the projects would NOT be available in your local craft chain store). And...on the website there is only one leather supplier listed.
Also...this is not a "weekend craft...use tools you already have around the house" book. As I mentioned above, the projects are lovely, but will require an investment in tools and supplies specifically required for working with leather.
If you are already a leather crafter, a returning leather crafter like me, or a serious beginner willing to invest in the required materials I heartily recommend this book. I think you will really be inspired by these projects.

  2. Although I have yet to try the projects, after looking long and hard at the book, I think it's going to be fun to try some of them. the instructions seem adequate and the pictures are beautiful.

  1. This is the final book on leather chemistry by Dr. Thomas Thorstensen, arguably one of the foremost experts in this field, whose career in leather chemistry spanned over fifty years. The book is concise and easy to digest and is a library must-have for anyone in the field. Dr. Thorstensen passed away in December, 2002, and shall be sorely missed.

  2. Ideal for anyone wanting to start off with basic leather making knowledge and good for revision of old timers

3 comments about MANDE POTTERS & LEATHERWORKERS.
  1. As a MENDE from West Africa, I was pleasantly surprised to find a book about my tribe.....until I realized that the author wrote MANDE instead of MENDE. I have tried in vain to find information on the MANDE tribe (as we are referred to by the author). I can't believe that in the author's quest, the name of the tribe is incorrect. I only hope it is my error!

  2. The prior Mende reader is just looking in the wrong place--this book deals with Mande-speakers (Bamana, Malinke, etc.) of Mali and surrounding countries, and is an interesting delve into the whole question of caste in the area, as well as inherited occupations and compellingly beautiful creations. She brings out the lesser-studied arts of women, as well as the products of the leather-workers, which show trans-Saharan cross-influences and had an impact on much of West Africa. Carefully-considered and clearly-written academic work which is solid and extremely useful.

The Mende reader might well enjoy a book actually about the Mende--Ruth Phillips's "Representing Women" or Sylvia Boone's "Radiance from the Waters" (both about Mende concepts of female beauty and the Sande women's society).

  3. This is a beautiful book about pottery made by Mande peoples. It was a great help to me when I did research for a paper on Mande pottery. It was difficult to find books on this subject, so I was so pleased when I found it. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys pottery or African art.
