  1. This book was lots of fun. I have yet to actually knit any of the patterns, but I know I will. I may never knit all of the patterns but this is just one of those knitting books that elicits both smiles and creative juices. I would definitely recommend it for everyone but a very first time knitter - it's definitely not your standard basic "learn to knit" book. It's a great addition to my collection of knitting books

  2. As a novice knitter, I was thrilled to receive The Craft Queen's Guide to Hip Knits: 19 Projects, Step-by-Step Instructions, Basic to Advanced Stitches delivered to my doorstep. I pulled out my odds and ends of yarn, scissors, different-sized needles and sat down on the couch with the book.

Once considered your grandmother's sport of choice, knitting has made a comeback in the past few years--well beyond the kitschy Christmas sweaters or `70s tea cozies. So it was nice to delve into a book that reaffirmed the fact that knitting is once again in style with a whole new generation.

I consider myself primarily a "scarf" person, favoring simple, mindless patterns I can accomplish in front of the television. The Craft Queen's Guide to Hip Knits is a nice departure from the "scarf maker" in me. The book's introduction gives a rundown of the basics, from casting-on-and-off methods to increasing or decreasing rows and learning to read patterns and pick the right needles.

Giving the projects in the book a "wow" factor are the large, minimalist photos of balls of yarn and completed projects. This knitting pattern book has such stunning photos--full-color pages of thick, purple yarn, sumptuous textures and "hip" projects.

There are 19 projects offered, from beginner (like me) to advanced, but even the advanced patterns don't seem particularly daunting. Projects run the gamut from fingerless gloves, pillow covers, scarves, shawls and a lampshade. Don't be turned off by the kitsch factor of knitting a lampshade, though; it's actually appealing.

Armchair Interviews says: Nice book for all levels of knitters.

5 comments about Knitted Throws and More for the Simply Beautiful Home.
  1. As usual, these authors use the most expensive, luxurious yarns, but this time the results are not even worth a second look. Don't bother with this book. Unless your tastes are really wierd (or you are a University of Washington Husky fan) you won't want to make any of these murky, overwrought "concept" afghans. It's a pretty book, and maybe the recipes are OK. (Yes, recipes: "Salmon in Parchment with Wasabi Cream"!) As with their other books, though, the authors seem more interested in showcasing themselves, their store, their friends, and their lifestyle, than creating appealing designs. I've been more impressed with Herrschner's catalog.

  2. This book will make you want you to get our your knitting needles, cook up a sumptuous dish, and enjoy your surroundings with friends and family! The knitting designs are the beautiful, elegant and SIMPLE creations we have come to expect from the team at Trictor. In addition, each pattern is presented as a novella - complete with contextual photographs, history of the design and its knitter, and a complementary recipe. There is great variety - baby shower "WOWs", traditional cables, stadium blankets, and elegant throws with faux fur and silk satin trim. Whether you ever knit a stitch, you will enjoy the visual and comforting appeal of this book.

  3. Collaboratively compiled and written by Linden Phelps and Beryl Hiatt (co-owners of Tricoter, a popular Seattle yarn shop), Knitted Throws And More For The Simply Beautiful Home is an appealing, full-color book of practical instructions for crafting a variety of colorful, practical, and warm knitted throw coverings. The vivid photographs clearly portray finished works of handcrafted art. The various knitting project instructions are precise and enhanced with helpful tips, and are especially recommended for those who have had prior experience knitting and are already familiar with knitting terminology and basic stitches.

  4. I loved each of the patterns in this book and wanted to find the yarn to make at least one. The problem is that you have to be a millionaire to be able to afford the yarn specified in the book. I will probably eventually make something out of the book but I will have to make a few adaptions with the yarn.

  5. I bought my copy of this book from Tricoter, as well as the yarn for the project. See the finished product as the first (only) photo in the image section. The throw came out absolutely beautiful, and will definitely be a family heirloom. It's wonderfully soft and warm as well. The yarn cost more than $1,000 when bought from Tricoter.

2 comments about Knitting Languages.
  1. This is an excellent book for people who love to knit and do not wish to be restricted to designs which are published only in English. It has knitting terms for more languages than I can remember, including the Scandanavian languages and Japanese. It is a must for knitting lovers who love to explore a multitude of designs.

I came across this book in a library, and I have ordered a copy for my personal reference.

A 'MUST BUY' for people who love to knit.

  2. I bought some yarn once at the Rekyavik Airport (a beautiful Lopi, of course.) Some elegant patterns for pullovers were included, but they were in Icelandic, German and Norwegian. Lucky for me, I speak German. But not KNITTING German. What is "umschlag" and "abnehmen?" I can guess, but...I'd like to be sure.

There are many wonderful patterns available in French, Norwegian, Danish, Spanish and Italian. This book helps you translate the most common terms used in knitting for most of the European languages and even...Japanese. With a set of charts, you will find that knitting in translation is not all that difficult. This is the Rosetta Stone for knitters and really, if you are a serious knitter and want to explore the delights of foreign patterns, this is a must-have.

1 comments about Latvian Mittens: Traditional Designs and Techniques.
  1. Latvian mittens are colorful and have patterns a bit like Fairisle or Norwegian style color knitting. They often have fringed or scalloped edges.

This book has many color photos of amazing patterns to knit. This edition is out of print and a new one is being published, with an expanded set of patterns and photos.
