5 comments about SoulCollage: An Intuitive Collage Process for Individuals and Groups.
  1. The SoulCollage process is an amazing tool for exploring your inner world and discovering who/what resides within. Highly recommended.

  2. If you love the idea of collage because you can't draw... If you enjoy using "cards" in a spiritual practice... This is just such a lovely book and opens so many creative and wonderful personal possibilities.

  3. SoulCollage is a truly relevant and important process orientated book by a very knowledgeable author. This book is clear, concise and to the point. Inner processes, thoughts and knowledge(s) are discovered, explored, and analysed. I believe that this book could change lives.

  4. From the review I thought this might be a Christian based art book. It is not at all! It kind of gives me the creeps actually.

  5. The book itself was somewhat clumsy to hold and manage... it's wide.

The information within is good but feels somewhat incomplete. The images are amazing and plentiful but would have been better if they had all been in color as opposed to back and white.

It's an ok book and it could have been better....

5 comments about Thrown Pottery Techniques Revealed: The Secrets of Perfect Throwing Shown in Unique Cutaway Photography.
  1. If I could only have one book on throwing pottery this would be it, hands down! I've gone through alot of books and found this one to be far and above the best for addressing all of the steps to easier learning and is presented in the most effective way. It is much more detailed than most of the other books. These details of advice and the cutaway photography make all the difference. Having this book as a supplement to my pottery teacher's instruction has been so beneficial. The book covered details that my teacher didn't think to give me and the cutaway photography gave me the visual tools that can't be demonstrated as easily in a live class. Having this book to refer back to often during the learning process continues to be of great value.

  2. it doesn't contain glaze recipes of the finished pieces that are pictured in the book. that's the only complaint i have. it was given to me when i first started throwing and i've found myself going back to it even as i advance.

  3. This is an excellent book to have, if you enjoy and want to learn more about hand-building with clay. It has projects connected with all three approaches to handbuilding: coiling, pinching and slabbing. It also teaches how to make plaster molds, including 2-part molds. This is a great skill to learn if you want to be able to make reproductions of your own clay pieces. I've been working with clay for about 2 years and I found lot of tips and tricks that I didn't know. Definitely a worthwhile book to own.

  4. this replaces the same book that i mysteriously lost. it's a great book for a beginner, which is what i am. easy to understand with good photography and projects. it's the book i use the most when hand building.

  5. Gt to get a copy of mary chappelhow's book - very helpful to get help a budding potter.

  1. This beautiful book provides detailed instructions and lovely photographs for making charming fabric art projects. I love to sew, but I have always stuck to clothing. This book has opened a new door for me! Mrs. Collings provides detailed stitching instruction, so that this book is great for sewing novices, too. Each project is uniquely beautiful, from the mixed-media "quiet book" on the cover, to felt bead jewelry, tiny cloth stuffies, precious vintage-inspired angels (reminiscent of those my grandma used to display on the piano at Christmas time!), and so much more. It's a joy to look at, too. This book is perfect for anyone interested in "creating," and it's a necessity for anyone who has stockpiled fabric and felt scraps, vintage baubles, glitter, and buttons!

  2. I've always had a deep admiration for sewers but feel like it's not something I can really do. Julie Collings' book has opened the door for me to try my hand at it again with lovely little projects that seem like they would make the perfect gifts. I'm giving it another shot and this book has been a real inspiration.

2 comments about Special Techniques & Stitches in Crochet.
  1. This elegantly presented book is a real surprise. There are several innovative techniques in crochet presented along with accompanying projects by top-name designers. The techniques include: No-chain foundation, diagonal crochet, wiggly crochet, Irish crochet, knit-look crochet, and punched fabric. In addition to the techniques are 44 stitch patterns and borders. The book includes fabulous designs by Margaret Hubert, Lisa Naskrent, Bendy Carter, Susan Lowman, Tammy Hildebrand, Kim Kotary, and more. It is a good choice in adding to your crochet reference collection.

  2. I agree with the previous review. The 33 projects are arranged by technique or stitch. The basics are at the back for new crocheters. Full page color illus of everything and good print. Each pattern has skill level and type of yarn. For example the first pattern is a cardi by Hubert using #5 chunky wt yarn and the skill level is intermediate and it uses the no-chain foundation for the special technique. Most projects are intermediate skill with only one marked advanced. About 4 marked easy. There are some really nice vests, a few children's patterns, some afghans and a lovely wrap. Also some thread patterns, purses, and valance. So there's a good variety. In addition there are about 30 stitch patterns not given as projects. Designs are by well known crochet designers such as Hubert, Annie Potter, Bendy Carter, Martha Miller and others. Recommended for anyone who wants information on the new stitches and techniques.

5 comments about Handbook of Model Rocketry, 7th Edition (NAR Official Handbook).
  1. This is without a doubt the best book on model rocketry I've ever seen, and I read it from cover to cover. It deals with every aspect of rocketry in a very accessible manner (for example, presenting formulas for various calculations, but not requiring their use). It is organized so that the reader can focus on single aspects of a rocketry program (for example, separate chapters on aerodynamics, rocket propulsion, recovery systems, altitude measurement). I am a science teacher and coach to two Team America Rocketry Challenge teams, and I keep copies of this book available for my teams as reference. I wish it had more information on electronic payloads, but that is a more advanced topic, so it is very forgivable. If you own only one book on rocketry, this is the one to buy.

  2. As an adult Model Rocketeer for the past 16 years, I can say that every Rocketeer should have this in their library. It is indeed "the Bible" of Model Rocketry. It is a goldmine of information and technical know-how, and will lead a beginning Rocketeer on the right path. Even someone who's just curious about Model Rocketry will learn a lot from it.

  3. It goes into so much detail from glues to auerodynamics to calculations of height and stability. I would reccomend it to a beginner and an experienced model rocketeer.

  4. The 7th edition of this great handbook is getting a little "long in the tooth" now, but it is still essential reading for anyone who wants to get into model rocketry, regardless of whether you're main interest is low, mid or high power rockets. Of all the books about model rocketry that I own, G. Harry Stine's handbook is the best value for money.

  5. This is a wonderful way to introduce kids into the value of math. They will learn about aero dynamics to boot. It's not a 'math' book, it's just that you have to learn a few formulas to be able to do the more entertaining projects. Harry does a great job of explaining the how's and why's of Rocket science in an entertaining way. He also throws a little history in there. This print is older but it hasn't changed much. If you find a cheap copy, snatch it up.

5 comments about Peyote Stitch: Beading Projects.
  1. I cannot express how pleased I am with this book...it provided good wasy to follow directions AND the phoroas were very inspiring!

  2. Superb diagrams. Very easy to understand and follow.
Very tasteful projects. An excellent how-to book for moderately experienced beaders.

  3. I liked the pictures, but haven't taken the time to actually do the projects. I would recommend this for anyone wanting to learn this aspect of beading. I've done a little of it before, and it can have some spectacular results.

  4. I enjoyed paging through the book and looking at the great photos as well as trying the projects. A new beader will find the book very helpful and seasoned beaders will be able to do the projects handily and take off on their own from there. A great all-around addition to a beader's library.

  5. Love this book - most of the publications I end up buying I only work two or three projects, but there are only two or three in this book that I'm not interested in trying. They glaze over the odd count peyote stitch a little and focus on knot tying a little excessively, but it's still an excellent and inspirational book in a world where it's challenging to find much about peyote.

  1. This is a great book that includes the Blooming Nine Patch that many have seen popping up recently. There are several very inspiring quilts in here that are not difficult to piece. Great instructions that include even the orientation of pieces to minimize problems with bias edges. I've already done the Blooming Nine Patch and plan to make a few more as the possibilities are endless. This is one book you will definately use and not just look at and enjoy

  2. Very clear directions and beautiful designs. Good ideas on blending colors. Great for beginners but interesting enough for the experienced quilter.

  3. I love this book. I've made a couple of quilts using it and plan to make a few more. I've gotten nothing but rave reviews on the quilts I made using this book and I can't recommend it highly enough. I purged through my quilt book collection and got rid of most of them but this book stayed in my top ten list. The use of color alone is worth the price of the book.

  4. I took a class with this wonderful, spunky lady a few years ago. She makes HUGE quilts, and this book has a great selection of variations. The sizes only include either very large, or baby. But the designs are so simple!

  5. I was pleasantly surprised to find out this is the book used on a Simply Quilts episode, which I had wanted to buy anyway. A good, fast strip method for making Trip Around the World, Blooming Nine Patch, and other patterns. Lovely photos, definitely worth a buy.

5 comments about The Decorated Journal: Creating Beautifully Expressive Journal Pages.
  1. I devoured this book! It is by far the most inspiring and informational book on journal making I have ever read. Wonderfully written and illustrated so it is easy to understand and put to use. I can't wait to try everything including making my own pigments! I guess I'll have to buy her first one!

  2. I was very pleased with this book! It has lots of great ideas for journaling or other mediums.

  3. I loved Gwen Diehn's first book and this one is very, very good. The journal pages by the artists and the suggestions from the author are inspiring and thought provoking.
The design of this book is uninspired and boring. It is UNDERdecorated. It looks like a text book, which is a shame.

  4. This book helped me get to the next stage in my beginning art journaling. I learned why paper behaves the way it does when liquid is applied, how different adhesives work and what they're good for--tons of practical stuff for a neophyte to art journaling. I go back to it again and again. It's got great information, and it's a beautiful book to spend time with. I'll grow into it for a long time.

  5. Even if I never make my own journal, I love looking at this book! It takes you through the whole process or suggests how you can transform an already existing book. The examples show creative and beautiful ideas. It focuses more on the use of paint than other materials. I bought it with The Decorated Page which elaborates on page ideas and love owning both. It is a great addition to my art reference material.

5 comments about Pastel School (Learn as You Go).
  1. This book is incredibly helpful with demonstrations, suggestions for colors, layering options, and beautiful illustrations with various styles shown. The only thing that would have been even more helpful to this book was a little more information about paper and pastel suppliers and the difference in quality between them. I'm still giving it 5 stars though!

  2. Perfunctorily scanned and look forward to prepping self with this and other pastel tomes/volumes bought for the purpose. Now to find the time to get back to it. It's been nearly 35 years.

  3. The book's subtitle below "Pastel School" starts off with "A practical guide..." and this is so true! I am impressed at the book's clarity in how it is sectioned and titled for each skill/technique discussed. Information from getting the type of pastels you may want to use to recommendations on caring for the finished artwork is all covered. Some may say that the information in a few sections is a bit sketchy/limited, but if you want to learn more (e.g. doing portraits), there are additional books available that can provide a pastel artist to advance and learn more. This book gives you the basics, but also allows for growth in the sections on types of art styles that one may produce (e.g. still life, landscapes, flowers, portraits). This book, plus another one I am using, are enabling me to learn pastel art in a way that that will ensure long-term enjoyment with this art medium. I can't wait to get back to my new package of pastel papers to begin a new piece, particularly with a few of the skills I've expanded upon from the information I've learned from this book!

  4. This is my 2nd favorite book from a massive library of pastel books. LOL It's one you can learn from and still go back to again and again!

  5. This would be a good reference book to add to your beginner's library. It covers many subjects, so it gives you an overview of many techniques associated with painting with pastels. It goes into principles of color, shading & perspective. There are many step by step illustrations. Included are lessons on landscapes, still life, cityscapes & portraiture and the illustrated methodology to go with them.
