  1. Beautiful pictures with clear information. This book is required for the Comparative Anatomy class that I am taking. I would highly recomend this book for any vet tech students suffering from information overload. Great help in understanding the basics.

  2. I am extremely happy with the purchase of this particular book. As a student of Animal Bowen Therapy, I require information that is explanatory and easy to understand. This book is all of that and more. The pictures are simple and it is very easy to see the different aspects of the anatomy of a dog.
I received the book in wonderful timing and as always, found the transaction to be easy and non fuss. I will continue to shop for my books this way as it is 9 times out of 10 the cheapest and best way to do it.

  3. It is a good book, especially if you like to color.....but that is the only great thing about it. It lacks important detail, thus it is a coloring book only!

  4. This was a good book, I think a little to expensive for what you get. Should cost about $20-$25.00. Dont think it is worth $35.00

  5. Wonderful. Easy to use, great educational aid in learning the musculature of the dog and a general overview of the dogs physical attributes. Reccomend for any student or interested dog owner to help learn how the dogs body works.

5 comments about Encyclopedia Of Mosaic Techniques: A Step-by-step Visual Directory, With An Inspirational Gallery Of Finished Works (Encyclopedia of Art Techniques).
  1. I found this book to be an excellent primer for the person getting started in mosaics. The various techniques are well illustrated with easy to understand text. I found the designs interesting, colorful, and the type I could put to use. All of this is laid out in a spiral bound book that lays flat for easy reading and reference. I own several books on mosaics, but this one is my favorite.

  2. This book is one that should be on the shelf of any and all mosaic artists. More likely, they will be found in use on desktops and workshops. From some basic history of mosaic art to actual technique and fundamental information for creating your own mosaic masterpiece, this book has it all. I loved the many images that were inspirational and informative. Overall, I loved this book and would recommend to artists interested in mosaic.

  3. 1. For a novice mosaic artist, the encyclopedic format of techniques might be frustrating. As a resource book, it seems the user would be better served if the info was organized according to categories & sequentially, rather than alphabetically.

    2. A more experienced mosaic artist will expect a great deal more content in a book entitled "encyclopedia". I would be willing to pay more for a seriously comprehensive book on this subject.

    3. More historical references, with photos of ancient mosaics, would be a logical addition. There were references to these, but only a few examples. In one case, a highly descriptive reference is made to a Roman mosaic of a woman, but no photo? Photos of ancient mosaics are great sources of inspiration for projects.

4.Some of the references to ceramic tile are misleading. This book isn't meant to be a tile encyclopedia, but we should use the correct terms for the tiles used in mosaic art work. For instance; beginning on Types of Tesserae page 28, the mosaic tesserae that are identified throughout the book as Unglazed Ceramic & Glazed Ceramic, are, in fact, Unglazed Porcelain Ceramic and Glazed Porcelain Ceramic, respectively. On the same page, Glazed Ceramic Tile is identified correctly. This could create confusion to those unfamiliar with types of tile and their intended use.

There is a big difference between Porcelain Tile and Ceramic Tile.

Porcelain tile is composed of the same basic elements (clay) as ceramic tile, but has added minerals and slightly different production methods that make it much more dense & durable than ceramic tile. Porcelain tile is produced unglazed or glazed; and is generally used for high traffic and exterior applications because of its durability.

Generally speaking, ceramic tile is made of clay and it is almost always glazed - the "body" of ceramic tile just isn't usually sturdy enough or attractive enough to be left un-glazed. Glazed tiles are often decorative and can be handpainted with glazes, resulting in an endless variety of available designs & colors.

There are misleading statements with regard to the stain resistance of ceramic tile. Glazed Ceramic Tile does not stain (that's one point of the impervious glass glaze), unless the glazed surface is seriously compromised in some manner by age or wear. In this case, staining agents could migrate beneath the glaze through fractures in the glaze and cause staining under the glaze.

Unglazed porcelain mosaic tiles can stain if left unsealed, because they are not protected by a kiln fired glass glaze.

Perhaps some of the confusion is related to cultural differences between the American English and British English languages. British & American terminology on the subject of tile does seem to differ slightly. An American reader could misinterpret.

Always research the tile you plan to use for your projects, especially on commissioned projects. Don't rely on craft "how to" books for your information. Ask the dealer/distributor or manufacturer for product specifications and ask what the features & limitations are for the tile - areas of concern: frost resistance (exterior), water absorption (pools/spas), glazed or unglazed (dirt & oil resistance). This information is available in product brochures and on mfr websites - look for technical data.

    5. There is an over abundance of projects using glass - perhaps the authors favorite medium.

    6. Photos of finished projects (making templates, etc) in addition to the small step by step photos, would be very useful to help visualize the objective of the project.

  4. I have been planning mosiac borders for over my sinks in my bathroom. While I had an idea of what I wanted to do, just scanning this book gave me far more ideas to consider than I would have been able to conceive on my own, especially on the flow and arrangement of individual tiles. While I'm a beginner, what I have come up with is a winner.

  5. The book has very nice pictures, but I didn't liked the organization and I must say that as a begginer I couldn't start any project with this book. Perhaps for advanced learners...

5 comments about Beginner's Guide to Braiding: The craft of Kumihimo (Beginner's Guide to).
  1. This was the first book I purchased on this subject. I have to admit it was not easy getting started, but the book became my "bible". I am now creating leads for show dogs using this skill. They are selling very well and I can hardly keep up with my orders. I strongly recommend this book for anyone wishing to gain a good background in working with Kumihimo.

  2. Was a little too much for a beginner. But gave me lots of good ideas that I will try when I become more experienced in Kumihimo. Beautiful pictures in the book. Great as a reference text, but do not use if you are trying to learn.

  3. I am a new Kumihimo enthusiast and was looking for something to help me. I love the photos and very easy to follow directions and diagrams! Would definately recommend to those who are interested in this very addictive craft!

  4. As a beginner to kumihimo, I felt this book covered all the basics needed to learn the braiding process. Once you follow the step by step photo images and diagrams, it was easy to pick up the steps. Although I used the pearl cotton threads for my first project, it is not necessary to keep using the suggested threads as they can be costly. I used cotton blend yarn, nylon cord, and even hemp as my cords and found great results, depending on your project needs.

  5. The author makes this very easy. Granted this is a beginners book but you can still make a 'pretty' on your first effort. Her dimensions for a wooden marudai (stand) were so accurate that my husband made me one from scrap hardwood in his shop. Like most arts/crafts,you can go forward from this point and get into really complicated braids, or not....the choice is up to you. There are many practical uses for beautiful braids. My first one is attached to a pull for a ceiling fan. This book contains instructions for square, round and flat braids.

  1. I bought this for a gift for my(step)father-in-law - he is a crossword puzzle aficionado and he liked it so much, he wanted to start doing them right away! This is a good crossword book for people with failing eyesight.

  2. I bought this Crossword puzzle in large print for my 91 year old Mother as one of her Mother's Day gifts. It arrived in plenty of time and she was thrilled. She said it had so many good puzzles to pick from and with the large print, she can see them all just fine. Said she can't wait to dig in.

5 comments about Visual Chronicles: The No-Fear Guide to Creating Art Journals, Creative Manifestos and Altered Books.
  1. This book contains NO interesting ideas, NO beautiful pictures, NO inspiration, and NO meaningful journal writing. However, it does contain techniques you probably learned in kindergarten. So unless you are under six, you do not need to buy this book. These authors presumably have created beautiful art at some point, considering their profession as art journal writers and instructors, yet they withhold any and all information on this topic throughout the book. I feel completely betrayed -- I gave them money and they gave me none of their knowledge. I wish I would have considered the advice of those who rated this book poorly prior to my purchase. Although this book was not expensive and I enjoy having a large reference library, I refuse to keep this book as part of my collection because I know I will never gain anything from these pages, now or in the future.

  2. A wonderful book that provides tools for anyone who wants to start journaling. And even for those who are experienced there is a lot to read, see and laugh about. The essence of what Karen and Linda want to tell you is that only you can tell your story. No one else can do that for you. The sisters show you that you only need limited supplies to make a start and that you definitely do not need an education in art to do it. Anyone can do it! That is by far the biggest message the sisters give you. It is well written, with a great sense of humor. The layout of this book is beautiful. The examples and explanations of the various techniques are breathtaking. This book invites you to get started right away. It gives you enough inspiration to take notice of and to journal about the humor, the special occasions and the everyday. And to do this in a way that is especially worth while to you.

  3. I read Journal Revolution first, and loved this just as much! This book is full of inspiration and ideas for art and life. It is not just a scrapping book or a journaling book. Its really about how you approach art and life. There are fun and unusual projects, cool techniques, and the best philosophies ever. LOVED IT!

  4. The title of the book and the reviews here are really misleading. This book has nothing to do with art journalling. Art is art, scrapbooking is craft.

I didn't believe the other negative reviews here because they all went on about how they were artists and they already knew the stuff here. But their reviews were much more accurate than the 5 star reviews.

If you want to collage a little book together about your life, the things you love etc, then this, and every other book by this publisher is for you. There are hundreds of books out there and i'd say this one is a little thin on ideas to be worth choosing over other scrapbooking books.

Basically this book talks about painting the background, using rubber stamps and rub-on letters, colouring in photocopies, and cutting up paint sample sheets from the hardware store, as though they were new ideas.

There are cute ideas in here, and the book talks you through how to inspire yourself. But i honestly can't see any difference between this an all the other books out there trying to cash in on the scrapbook industry. of which i am not interested.

If you want to make an art journal, something that an artist uses to develop their work and ideas, then you're going to be let down. You wont be given ideas for drawing materials, or how to combine materials to accentuate your own drawings, how to develop ideas further and present them thoughtfully.

This book actually assumes you have no drawing or creative ability at all, suitable for some, but not for those wishing to create an art journal/sketchbook. I suspect the author/publisher put the word art in the title to purposely mislead people like me. I'm seriously tempted to return this book since the title is so misleading.

  5. This isn't a bad book, but for me it didn't prove to be a very good one either. I will admit to getting some ideas from it, but found it pretty basic for the most part. I really didn't like any of the pages the authors did and wasn't really inspired by any of it. I have to agree with the other reviewers who said this is more like cut and paste scrapbooking and not art journaling. If you want a book about doing crafts, this is a good one. If you want a book about doing art, then save your money.

5 comments about The Knitters Book of Finishing Techniques.
  1. So far, I have only perused this book, but I can see that it is one of those essential items for your knitting library. I have several knitted articles that I've left unfinished as I waited for this book to arrive, so I can finish them professionally. I have no doubt this book will be a useful resource.

  2. Gave to my daughter for Christmas and she said it was just what she needed.

  3. This is a great book for knitters who are trying to improve their skills. I bought it because my finishing skills need to be improved. However, the finishing techniques are not as detailed as I would have liked.
But this book is much more than a finishing book. It is an excellent instruction book for at least intermediate knitters or perhaps someone who just wants to have their projects look a bit more professional.
I have used it again and again. Different ways to increase and decrease are well explained.
I can't give it five stars because the book doesn't really do what it says it does. But I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their knitting.

  4. This is a very good book to have if you are like me new to knitting. This book will help you to put the finishing techniques to your knitted garments perfectly. You should get this book,I did.

  5. I used this book constantly for the first few years I knit as I learned to seam and finish my garments. I still use it and it is one of the best and most loved books in my knitting library. Very handy and helpful.

5 comments about A Treasury of Knitting Patterns.
  1. This is by far my favorite stitch pattern book. The pictures are great (even though they are black and white). The only down side is that none are written in charts. Would be nice to have some of them written this way too.

  2. My sister, knitting for 50 years, advised me that this would be the one most valuable book I could buy with my moderate knitting experience. The number of patterns described in the book is breath taking. The simple organization of the book is appreciated. The author's prose and content are superb, leaving the reader wanting for more information on the history of knitting.

  3. So many fabulous designs - all well photographed and explained. An excellent book for any knitter!

  4. A lot of patterns in this book had been published before, notably by Burda, Harmony guides and Mon Tricot. Burda pattern books are highly superior, because they provide excellent charted instructions (as I have seen in the two last Treasuries, Ms. Walker does not really understand how knitting charts should be made, so perhaps it is better that she sticks to basic text). Mon Tricot books contain also text, but in a more messy format, and often with mistakes, so here Barbara Walker does a better job. Harmony is so similar as to look almost like a reprint. Of course, we know that SOME patterns will be reprinted, so no big deal, and it is very convenient to have them in one book and not in three or four. Altogether, though, I would not miss this book terribly much.
But if you are unfamiliar with other books I quote this one should be very instructive, so I still give it three stars.

  5. If this was the only book of knitting patterns I ever purchased, it would be enough to last a lifetime. The pictures are clear and the author adds commentary to the different sections and to most of the patterns. This is helpful in choosing the appropriate pattern for the project.

  1. This quilting book is one of the best for beginning quilters. I watch Sewing with Nancy every week, saw her great ideas for quilting which were taken from this book, so I just HAD to have it.

  2. I have a lot of quilting books and I have to say, this is by far the best I have used. It's great for beginners and even more advanced quilters will definitely pick up some new ideas.

  3. This book from Nancy is just perfection itself. I am a quilter for years, but how Nancy explains quilting in details, it certainly give me much more confidence for my next "work of art". I recommend her book to everyone.
    Jirina

  4. Another great book, by a great lady. Her instructions are so clear, and easy to follow. She brings back the joy of making quilts. I highly recommend this book to any beginner in quilting!

  5. I am a great fan of Nancy Zieman and love to quilt so it was a sure thing that this book and I would get together. I have only been quilting a year and this book has already answered many of my questions.
