  1. I love this book. It is filled with colour, design and great ideas. It has filled me with inspiration. I want to sew everything and more of what I design too! I thank the authors, too, for introducing me me to the 'Artist's Way'. Just what I needed to kick start my wayward creativity. So many quilting books are devoid of originality - this book is filled with beautiful colour and simple ideas. So glad I found it! Jo Cooper, Australia

  2. I didn't buy this book for a while, even though these are two of my favorite quilters, because I don't plan to ever collaborate on a quilt with anyone. But I bought it anyway and am so glad I did! It is such a bright, fun and informative book. I still don't plan to collaborate with anyone, but I will use and enjoy this book for quite some time. Definitely worth five stars!

  3. I AM A PRETTY PROLIFIC QUILTER, 135 quilts (most of them twin-sized or larger) IN 15 YRS., I INSTRUCT AND I DESIGN....THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST QUILT BOOKS I OWN. I WOULD'VE PAID $100 FOR IT, AND LUCKY ME, A GOOD QUILTING BUDDY IMMEDIATELY KNEW THAT IT WAS FOR ME. IT WILL SET YOU FREE! NO QUILT POLICE HERE. YOUR QUILTS ARE YOUR ART, AND WHO IS TO SAY THAT YOU DIDN'T PUT ENOUGH STITCHES, OR YOUR COLORS ARE WRONG, NOT THESE GALS! YOU CAN USE THIS BOOK TO MAKE A THOUSAND OF YOUR OWN ORIGINAL PATTERNS, COPY THEIRS OR GET INSPIRATION TO REALLY REVIVE YOUR OWN STYLE. I HAVE READ AND REREAD IT 20 TIMES AT LEAST. AND IT'S UNDER $14?!?! A STEAL FOR A NOVICE QUILTER AND A REAL JOY FOR AN EXPERIENCED ONE.

  4. I was looking for more like the one on the cover, but there were none. The only thing I DID like about it was some of the border treatments.

  5. This book is great fun. I read it cover to cover within 2 days of receiving it. Will be doing a project from this book with friends. I highly recommend it for something different and fun.

  1. This book is one of the best I've seen. There are some well written and well-organised sections dealing with the principles of composition, colour and stitching techniques. Gloria usually starts her landscapes with a painted background, so she gives a short well-illustrated section on fabric painting. Most of that stuff is available elsewhere, but it is assembled and illustrated particularly well.
The second half of the book contains details of her construction methods. One of those is using freezer paper on the right side of the fabric for appliqued shapes. The second - her signature style - is pieced sections on point, blended into the applique design. She gives clear diagrams
and inspiring examples of this technique. She then gives some examples of how to achieve different effects for trees, water and reflections. There is a gallery of student work, and two fully illustrated projects with paper patterns included at the back.
In my view this is excellent value, a perfect blend of practical tips and inspiration.

  2. I like this book because it shows me lots of different ways to make designs on fabrics. I can use them in my own designs. Don`t have to make copys of others designs.

  3. Just as the title describes, this book is filled with luminous, georgous quilts and every secret you need to know on how to make your own. Gloria has given detailed instructions and methods on how to create every aspect of landscapes, backgrounds, forgrounds, sky, oceans, animals along with details on how to combine fabrics, apply paint and she has even included patterns. This book is easy to understand and recommended for beginners or advanced quilters wanting to take their creative abilities to a new level.

  4. Luminous Landscapes exceded all my expectations. I was fortunate to attend Gloria's workshop in 2004 in Durban, South Africa and enjoyed every minute. It is wonderful to have the book now to refresh my mind, to give more inspiration and to learn new techniques. The book is very good worth for money and very well and clearly illustrated. Instructions are easy to follow. I can highly recommend it to fellow-quilters.

  5. Luminous Landscapes: Quilted Visions in Paint and Thread A beautiful book with helpful techniques.

  1. If you're into jewelry with glass gems or the art deco look, this is an excellent resource. The text gives a good review of jewlery in the 1920s - 1940s, but on the level of an interested collector, not for a research paper. The photos are excellent and the pieces nicely categorized by type.

5 comments about Dore's Illustrations for "Paradise Lost" (Dover Pictorial Archives).
  1. This is with out a doubt the best of Gustave's biblically inspired works. His mastery is proven by creating a visually stunning and poetic world of a time long ago but not forgotten. It's hard to remember what I used to imagine when I thought of the Garden of Eden or the descension of the fallen angels must've been like prior to reading this work.

  2. It is amazing how such complex woodcuts could be done! Some of these are used in books. An example is the book cover illustration of the book "Raising Hell: A Concise History of the Black Arts and Those Who Dared Practice Them" (ISBN: 0399522387).

If you like to see high standard of woodcuts, get this book.

  3. Dore, known perhaps best for his woodcuts of Dante's "Divine Comedy", was not only a fantastic illustrator, but a prolific one as well, producing scores of woodcuts for great literature, including "The Holy Bible" and "Orlando Furioso". Before there were movies, a person could look at these pictures for motion, excitement, and dramatic storytelling.
This is a necessary companion to "Paradise Lost", a great work in its own right. Dore's illustrations clarifies, vivifies, and expands on the reading experience. The pictures are brilliantly reproduced here at a small cost to the consumer. The book stands alone for great artwork and is worth the minimal price.

  4. well, this book has my favorite drawings of gustave dore , but the priting quality is really bad , you better get pictures from somewhere. or may be look for another published version may be ...

  5. It was by great and curious fortune, that I obtained some years ago, an aged edition of the text of Milton's incredible poem, illustrated by Gustave Dore. These illustrations are amazing. One can only ruminate on the complexity of carving such woodcuts. But, I cannot understand why Dover does not reissue the original, with the illustrations inlaid in the text. For the power of these cuts, at least in part, emanates from their placement in the text, reflecting the full intention of the artist.

5 comments about Building Skin-on-Frame Boats.
  1. This is an excellent text for those who are interested in building their own "baidarka" or greenland style kayak. The text is interspersed with history and advice on technique as well as construction details. This is a must-have if you are planning on building your own kayak or "baidarka".

  2. I bought this book first and then bought Chris Cunningham's book. Both books compliment each other and since I do not know much about this process, I consider both required reading before I build. I really enjoyed this book. The author really tries to stay faithful to the spirit of the craft where possible. Of course, sealskin is no longer used but there is no glue for the joints (just lashing) and no varnish (linseed oil) so that the boat can remain as flexible as possible. I like that several designs were provided to show the possibilities of making skin on frame boats besides kayaks. It is a fascinating read of an ancient boatbuilding method. I am used to building small boats with wood, epoxy and varnish. I always like to try and learn new methods, so I am glad I came across this book. While this book does not provide all of the minute details and pictures of the Cunningham book, it still is very worthwhile getting. The author's fondness for this craft is contagious and comes across well. I would love to take a course at his shop sometime.

  3. Telling the truth, i have not made the boat yet, but this book is great, it really fills in the gaps, i recommend getting this book with the other book by Chris Cunningham, between the two of them they cover everything, this book has more designs so perhaps if you don't want a traditional greenland kayak but something a little different this book will be better. Chris Cunninghams book goes into a bit more detail but only encompasses the taditional greenland design.

  4. This is a most excellent book describing how to build a skin-on-frame hull.

Descriptive text with plenty of pictures and line drawings as needed to support the text.

Obviously a book written by someone familiar with teaching the craft.

  5. I really enjoyed reading this book. It tells in depth how to design build sof kayaks, and how to lay out your cockpit so it fits the builder, and distributes your weight correctly, but Morris doesn't stop there. He goes own to show you how to build canoes, and rowboat/sail boats.

5 comments about The Secrets of Elemental Quilting: Innovative Quilting Designs plus Trapunto Tips & Tricks.
  1. I just love this book, very informative for long arm quilters.

  2. Karen Mctavish has done it yet again. She never seems to let me down with her easy to follow instructions, and her books are always inspiration for me when I need ideas for another project. A+++++++

  3. It took over 3 weeks for this book to get to me, my wife had hoped to be able to use it for a class but it will be a great reference.

  4. Karen McTavish is great at presenting her "Secrets of Elemental Quilting" in a detailed, but easy to understand book. You will enjoy reading about her ideas for machine quilting designs and may even want to try some of them out.
Another great thing about her book is the DVD that is included. You can watch the DVD and actually see highlights of the detailed processes she describes in her book.
Even if you never plan to make a show quilt, you will still be enthralled by the techniques she presents in her book and DVD.

  5. Karen McTavish is a wonderful quilter. I love everything she does. The book gives all kinds of ideas and she shares here wonderful techniques. I hope to own all of her books. The are a great addition to my quilt book collection.

3 comments about Fifty Favorite Birds Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Book).
  1. I just purchased these Dover COloring Books for my mother and she loves them. The detail is out of this world and the variety of colors you can use are only limited by your inagination. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

  2. I bought this book for my children who are both bird lovers and gifted artists. We prefer this bird coloring book over the other bird coloring books because this is the only one that has a fold-out section in the front and back of the books showing each page in full-color. My children have used those as guides as to how to properly color each type of bird. The others (such as Audobon birds or State Birds and Flowers-- others we have) do not include colored guides.

  3. This book was wonderful in it's detail and I truly like the fold out pages with the pictures of the birds in their true colors. I look forward to many hours with this book. Perhaps it is the kid in me, or perhaps this book is good for grownups, whichever way you feel, I liked it.
