  1. Mr. Smith's book on Early Fenton Rarities is incredible. In addition to his very in-depth and informative text, the photos are abundant and well done. No details are lost to shadows. He describes and shows magnificent pieces that are truly one-of-a kind from this early period in Fenton's history. As a Fenton collector, my dream is to find one of these rarities and after reading and re-reading this book, I will be able to recognize them if I should run across any. This book is a valuable resource to any Fenton collector. I highly recommend it.

2 comments about Warman's Fiesta Ware: Identification & Price Guide.
  1. First off Fiesta is beautiful, but the photographs in this book are terrible!!! Not one photograph shows an accurate depiction of the subject. Many photographs seem blurred or fuzzy.
Pass this by and get "Fiesta, Harlequin, and Kitchen Kraft Dinnerwares" by The Homer Laughlin China Collectors Association. You will not ne disappointed....unless you purchase Warman's book.

  2. I love all things Fiesta, but this book is terrible. My main complaint is the "quality" of the photographs. They are so grainy-- sort of clear but fuzzy at the same time. And the color is way off. I mistook several pictures of gray Fiestaware for lilac at first glance! So forget about his "comparison" of the greens because it will not help you. What gets me is that any crap digital camera would have done a better job but from the reflections in the dishes it looks like he had a professional shoot the pictures. By the way, I also completely ignored the text (even though it is in LARGE print), since the Huxfords' book and the HLCCA's book cover everything. The bottom line: don't waste your time or money.

5 comments about The Complete Guide to Glass Painting: Over 90 Techniques with 25 Original Projects and 400 Motifs.
  1. The techniques presented in this book is good enough for a beginner like me to get started. However, the projects given in this book was not enough to motivate me to try them. I've found that the book was not organised enough for a beginner to go through the projects and progress from there.

Having said all this though, I still think that the book is a good reference to have and coupled with other books like Glass Painting (The Art of Crafts series) by Naazish Chouglay, you could learn more and appreciate the art as well as the techniques behind glass painting.

  2. We have been so excited with the continued success of this, our first book. Worldwide sales of this title have now exceeded 50,000 which we think makes it the best selling book on glass painting. Don't miss our other books and our new book, The Complete Guide to Stamping is published in March 2004. If you have access to broadband internet, you can see our regular TV show, Alan & Barry's Craft Choice and a host of other shows on www.createandcraft.tv. We can also be seen regularly on HGTV in the United States.

  3. If you just are getting one book about glass painting to try the hobby out then this is a good choice. It has a good overview of the materials available, step by step instructions for different techniques and templates to trace over (glass is perfect for tracing ;-) so you can get started on some small projects. The color pictures are plentiful and pretty, and the price is not too high as one might expect with color pics. Even if you are just into crafts and later find that glass painting isn't your thing the templates and pics can carry over into other crafts.

This is a good book if you know you want to try glass painting out.

  4. Since I am a beginner to glass painting and have one book on the subject I was looking for something more comprehensive that covered other techniques. After reading the review and previewing from amazon's "look inside", I had to buy the book. "The Complete Guide to Glass Painting, is just what it says, it is a good start for beginners and and provides lots of projects, techniques and motifts for the more advanced glass painter. There are so many techniques I never though of that was not covered in my one glass book. When the book first arrived in the mail, I glanced through it quickly; now I am reading the book word for word so as not to miss a great tip. Each page is well designed and layed out for easy reading and understanding with visual direction. You can't go wrong. For those who have more knowedge, this book has 400 motifs to use or combine to create fantastic glass paintings and projects that spark ideas. If you must have a glass painting book, this will be the only one you will need. Allan and Barry, thanks for sharing your 20 years of experience, this is a great book. If the authors ever collaborated to produce anther book; I will be looking out for more of them.

  5. Yes for anyone who does glass painting, especially faux stained glass, this is a MUST HAVE for glass painting reference libraries. This is the only cfraft I do and I was amazed at the number of things I learned from these guys. Also the problems I've had in the past were resolved in such a way that went away thinking "Why didn't I think of that?"...because I didn't have this book! I'm on the hunt for more from these same artists/authors.

  1. The photographs of the etching patterns in this book are deporable. I know that taking photos of clear glass to display the etching pattern is not the easiest thing to do - I do it on Ebay all the time - but the attempt failed miserably here. I call it a waste of my money.

1 comments about Rich Cut Glass of Charles Guernsey Tuthill.
  1. An enthralling chronical of the career of a remarkable man, Charles Tuthill, founder of Tuthill Cut Glass of Middletown, New York, and his family. Beginning as an apprentice at T. G. Hawkes & Company in 1887, Tuthill went on to become both a master glass cutter and a master engraver. He rose to foreman at Hawkes by the time he was 24 years old, resigning in 1895 to set up his own glass-cutting shop in his father's carraige house in Corning. From there he moved to Middletown where he was joined in the business by his sister-in-law, who served as general manager, and his brother. Well known for its original designs combining engraved fruits and flowers with geometric cutting, the Company prospered and, in 1915, was awarded a gold medal for its display at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.

Written in the you-are-there style of the "new journalism," the book is a lively read. Drawing heavily on interviews with Tuthill family members, it fills a large gap in our knowledge of the cut glass industry. Cut glass collectors will recognize the names of the players in this unique American success story and get to know them better through the many anecdotes offered by author Maurice Crofford. The book should appeal also to those interested in American business history, in general, and the unique period around the turn of the 20th century when brilliant cut glass decorated the tables of the rich and famous. It would make an excellent reading assignment for upstate New York high school students.

2 comments about Peachblow Glass: Collector's Identification & Price Guide.
  1. I have just begun to collect peachblow glass and I know very little about it. I bought the most beautiful vase, not knowing what it was other than glass, and decided to learn a bit about the piece in particular.....and then I discovered the wonderful world of peachblow! I picked up info here and there, but began to notice that it was confusing - the types, the companies that made them, the coloration, the imitations and most of all, what the heck defines what is and what isn't "peachblow," "peach blow," "peach bloom..." and so on. I started looking for a book that was informative, yet written so a beginner could comprehend. Voila! I found out about this book and it was a super investment. The pictures are stunning and the captions are helpful. The book is divided into chapters by company/type (i.e. Mt. Washington, Wheeling etc.) and each chapter gives loads of info, pictures, history and the Identification Cards, which plainly set out the characteristics of that particular type. If you collect peachblow or any glass or antiques, or if you just love beautiful art - this book is for you. Since the coloration and pictures are so excellent, it even makes a perfect "coffee table" book! I couldn't be more pleased.

  2. A great new 208 page treasury of Peachblow Glass collectibles, with more than 500 very large, colorful, sharp photos. Pricing is year 2000. The quality of the photography is amazing. You'll find plenty of useful and interesting in depth information here. Major topics range from Morgan, Mt. Washington, World's Fair, to Italian, Fenton, Imperial, Pilgrim and Intaglio. Newcomers to the hobby will find it most vaulable, as will the old-timers. You can't go wrong with this book. It's a beauty. Add it to your collection.
