  1. I STARTED CROSS STITCHING WHEN I WAS 8 YEARS OLD AND ONE OF THE FIRST BOOK THAT I USED TO GET DESIGNS IS "THE BEST COLLECTIONS OF CROSS-STITCH DESIGN & HANDIWORK". IT WAS EASY TO FOLLOW AND VERY CREATIVE! I STARTED WITH THE SMALL EASY PATERNS THEN I MOVED UP TO THE MORE CHALLENGING ONS! IT REALLY IS WORTH EVERY PENNY AND NOW AFTER ALMOST 15 YEARS I STILL GO BACK TO IT TO USE IT FOR MORE AND MORE DESIGNS. I REALLY RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE WHO REALLY LOVES TO CROSS STITCH AND DO IT BECAUSE THEY ENJOY & APPRECIATE IT.

  1. When I saw this book I hoped for a wonderful addition to my library on things Japanese. But I am sadly disappointed.

Anyone who tries to use this book to guide them into the world of Traditional Japanese Embroidery will have a lot of trouble unlearning bad habits later on. I firmly recommend that anyone with an interest in Traditional Japanese Embroidery find a good teacher and use the standard text written by Shuiji Tamura entitled "Traditional Japanese Embroidery: Instructions for the Basic Techniques."

Although the photograph quality is excellent in this book, the content of both photographs and diagrams is poor. In addition, some of the text describes shortcuts which are not only incorrect, but may be damaging to your fabric. Please beware.

  2. Japanese embroidery is an exacting craft using precise techniques that must be correctly mastered. Either Ms. Gray never studied them or she is deliberately ignoring them, because much of the information in this book is wrong. Anyone who uses this book to study Japanese Embroidery will be disappointed in the results. And if he or she finds a real teacher, the reader will have to unlearn a great deal. Some of the instructions are really weird, for example, steaming the finished work a foot away from the fabric. This is not how it's done and for good reason. Save your money and buy Shuji Tamura's book on Japanese Embroidery.

  3. I have been studying traditional Japanese embroidery for several years, and I can only say that I agree "in Spades" with the other two reviewers. Instead, purchase Shuji Tamura's book. It is superb.

  1. I just got this book, and it is exactly what I've been looking for. All in color, it gives succinct explanations of scrapbooking techniques such as matting. I know I will refer to this one again and again.

  2. Excellent presentation of materials and tools needed to begin this hobby. Also, step by step directions for several techniques

  3. This is a good book for beginners in that it covers all the basics without getting too fancy. It covers techniques such as using decorative edge scissors, corner and craft punches, how to use die-cuts and creative lettering, rubber stamps and embossing. My only BIG complaint is that it is always refering to another technique on another page, so I constantly have to flip back and forth. For example, in Technique 9 (how to use die-cuts, the first 3 steps refer to other techniques. Aggravating! Otherwise, good book for BEGINNERS!

  4. I just started scrapbooking a month ago, although I have an extensive background in art. I picked up this book thinking I would get a lot of ideas and tips that would help me add pizazz to my pages.

All of the ideas presented in this book were things I had already come up with on my own. I was very disapppointed in this book, because when I'd thumbed through it in the store, I really liked the page layout style they'd used in the examples, but the tips and theory behind them were too simple for me. I took it back and exchanged it for "Mastering Scrapbook Page Design" by Michelle Gerbrandt, which is a much better resource for anyone from a beginner to an experienced scrapper.

  5. As someone who has been scrapbooking for several years I find this book plain with only a few good ideas. It may be because I learn towards scrapbooking with a more elegant/tradional style rather then the cutesy style with die-cuts, etc.

Though this book is not the best for me it may be a good book for a beginner who wishes to get into scrapbooking. You might want to give it a try but check it out of your library then invest in it if you like it that much.
