5 comments about 101 Ideas for Embroidery on Paper.
  1. This book has many ideas and good instructions to do embroidery on cards. The illustrations are quite beautiful.

  2. This book provides a variety of paper embroidery projects for cards for different occassions. For about a quarter of the 101 projects shown no template is provided and instead the materials list includes a stencil sold by the author. I purchased this book so that I could make the cards shown - not to spend further money lining the pockets of the author by buying stencils. So I'm somewhat disappointed.

  3. Was not the type of Book I thought it was. Was disappointed in it because you have to order extra patterns that are not included in book. Most books like that have the patterns in it. I will not order them.

  4. I love this book! I have used the patterns again and again. It is definitely a good buy.

  5. This book has many wonderful designs for stitching on greeting cards. I have used a lot of the designs along with some of Erica Fortgens other stitching on paper books. I'm very impressed with this book.

  1. If you love Victorian Stiches then this is the book for you. Clearly illustrates dozens of embroidery stitches.

    Great Book.

  2. "Floral Stitches" is one of the most lovely books I own. It is actually a work of art, containing soothing, pleasing, delightful, and concise, informative, and inspirational content. The stitches are well- illustrated, and useful, and Montano provides exact information from an artist's eye on how to create work with depth. You will be delighted with it! Its small enough to go into my stitching tote, and I carry it everywhere I stitch. Eye-appealing! YOu can't go wrong!

  3. I have seen this book and can't wait to get my hands on one of my own. Just waiting for one at the right price. It is even better than Elegant Stitches and is in COLOUR. recommend

  4. I have many embroidery books and this is the best so far.

It is the most detailed I have seen and it includes not only great
visual step by step illustrations but information on how to design
stitch layouts for a flower you may have in your own garden.

Examples of both thread and ribbon uses are shown as well as
information on fabric and color choices (color wheel included).
It's a great book for those who have some experience in basic embroidery.

  5. Enjoyed "reading "this book. It has a monogram section that I used several times and was always pleased with the result.

5 comments about White Work: Techniques and 188 Designs (Dover Needlework Series).
  1. The introduction consist of the history of white work, materials for white work, and transferring the designs. Intructions for white work stitches includes stem, chain, lazy daisy, running, backstitch, straight stitch, seeding, satin, padded satin, long-and-short, french knots, overcast, buttonhole, feather, herringbone, chevon, star, shadow, couching, and lattice filling. The designs are beautiful. The only thing I find wrong is it's paperback. With use though the years it will fall apart. Get your stapler ready!

  2. I had never tried whitework before buying this book, but I am glad to own it. It contains a good introduction to the stitches involved in whitework. I found I couldn't put it away - I actually wound up embroidering quilt squares so that I could try as many of the stitches as possible. It helps to have a previous background in sewing and embroidery, but this is a good way to branch out.

  3. I am disappointed by this book. There are no real life pictures of what can be done with this technique - only the cover. It does provide the history, how to do the stitches and a lot of patterns that can be transferred as the "Techniques and 188 Designs" in the title promises. However there is no challenge or inspiration to apply this art.

  4. I love this book for the designs! If you are looking for White Work eye candy you will be disappointed it has no photographs of white work other than the front cover. This is a simple book and if you look at the price it reflects that as well. Still it is a wonderful book just for the designs alone, which can be used with any embroidery not just in white work. I enjoyed reading about the history and how stitches are used for white work. The only thing that really makes white work any different is that it is done in all white thread on white fabric and when you work in 1 color you need to use different stitches to create texture and make your embroidery interesting.
The author suggests stitches for use with the patterns but they are only recommendations. I do wish there was a few examples to "see" what has been explained but that is not needed in order to use the patterns or to try creating your own white work.
Overall for the price this book is worth it for the patterns and a little bit of white work history and ideas.

  5. This books has good illustrations of the stitches used, and many good designs, though I was hoping to find more information about the history of the designs. I'm using them predominantly for Civil War reenacting, and wanted my embroidery to be authentic. The price was good -- as is true of most Dover publications, so I think this was well worth the price I paid, if not more so.

This would be a good book for beginners, especially if one looks at it as an open-ended guide that allows for individual creativity and use of colored threads.

  1. This is another excellent book on ribbonwork by Helen Gibb. This book is a great resource for anyone who like to do ribbonwork. It is easy to understand and follow her instructions.

  2. I am an accomplished ribbon artist for several years now. I have books by several artists and my very favorite artist is Helen Gibb. I have learned so much from her. This bookElegant Ribbonwork is
absolutely luscious, with loads of new projects.. I can't wait to read it through and then start playing with my ribbons (I've already flipped through all the pictures - Hope I didn't drool on any of the pages).

    Bravo, Helen!

  3. This book is terrific. It gives you very clear instructions on how to make gorgeous flowers. I saw Ms. Gibb on Carol Duval's show and wanted to learn the technique and I am so glad that I ordered her books.

  4. This little book holds many, many instructions and pictures to show you how to make a wide variety of ribbons. It covers miniature ribbons, full size ribbons and a large offering of uses. The photos inside the book are informative and beautiful. There are many photos of historical uses of ribbon.

  5. I always read the reviews before buying and almost didn't purchase this book because of the one bad review. I am so glad that I got this book. It is fabulous from beginning to end. The pictures and projects are virtually stunning. I already have Helen's book: Ribbonwork, the Complete Guide. It has a lot of illustrations while this book opens up your mind to vast possibilities. It is worth the purchase if not just to gaze in wonderment.

  1. I bought this book about 2 years ago while I was exploring the world of raised embroidery and I got this book and I was floored!!!
Everything in this book is so life-like and beautiful!
I really need to get all of her books! If you are an embroiderer this MUST be in your reference library!
I have plans for this technique in my planned projects and everytime I look at this book I just gush!
Believe me, this book is worth it!
This is a great book. Learn stumpwork from Jane, she's got "TALENT"!!!!!

  2. This book is simply enchanting. The author's examples are masterpieces, her instructions are very clear. A must buy for a needlework enthusiast.

  3. Plenty of basic information about techniques, stitches and supplies. There are coloured photographs of all the projects towards the back of the book. Everything is clearly explained so a beginner would be able to make a start.

  4. This book is very inspiring and has clear directions and notes - a good buy. I think it will be very good for people like me - beginners.

  5. I bought this book many years ago and have continuously gone back to it for reference and ideas. With our last tropical storm we had some rain damage and this book was one of them. I honestly couldn't live without it and once the book was discovered ran to Amazon to order a replacement! Yes, I like the book that much. Even if you're just thinking about it, there are so many buying options get the cheap used one if you have to. You won't regret it.

  1. If an artsy representation of nature in embroidered forms is your thing, and you have every other possible embroidery publication, buy this one--but only if you want a complete literature on the subject. It is not a 'how-to' and not particularly inspirational unless you are a student of textile arts.

  2. This is not a "how to" book. No patterns here. It's a wonderful exploration of breaking boundries, and moving away from rules. A great book for those seeking inspiration to look beyond the norm. Love it, but not for everyone. Lucious photography in the 'artsy' mode. A great companion the the 'The Art of Knitting' book by the same author.

  3. As a new hand to embroidery I bought several books with stitches and then got stuck with what next? Not being prone to use kits and wanting to explore nature with texture and stitches, The Art of Embroidery seemed the perfect choice. The photos of nature and of her designs reproducing nature with stitches on fabric are incredible! My sewing background helped when it came to filling in the details of the instructions from time to time. I have already made several things inspired by this book AND I have preordered her next book on felt!

  4. I adore this book! It is really and truly inspirational. As someone else said, it is NOT a how to book - and it is not meant to be. It is what it says - inspiration. If you are a creative stitcher you will love this book and it will be like mine, a constant companion, even in your dreams.
The stunning photographs of the natural world and their translation into stitch is excellent, informative and again, inspiring. The ideas are innovative, modern and lead you into your own creative pathways. The photography is excellent and if stitch instruction are sparse you can see what to do from the pictures. Colour use is great and again, you can learn a lot just from the pictures.

Highly RecommendedThe Art of Embroidery: Inspirational Stitches, Textures, and Surfaces

  5. The Art of Embroidery: Inspirational Stitches, Textures, and Surfaces
I took this book out of a library for a couple of weeks and needed to extend the time because I loved it so much. The thought process and fiber manipulation taken from nature and developed into many different types of product, are fab. I am continually looking at this book again and again and always find it inspiring and motivating. If you love to design and create using your own ideas this is a must have. Not a "how to" book with little in the way of instructions. You need to have a sound understanding of embroidery, both hand and machine to help you nut out what they have done to achieve the results shown. An amazing book of photos, ideas and exploration to take you where you may not have thought to go.

  1. how to instructions. It is more in an outline format, with lots of gorgeous photos of finished pieces, but only one set of how to photos in the last part of the book. Still worth buying for the good ideas.

  2. Highly recommended for artistic quilt makers. Detailed works of art inspired by empheral in nature, architecture or the medieval this is a well balanced book with something for everybody. Rich, decorative, delicate, complex, intricate and bold use of colour and fabrics before the embroidery adds a new and extraordinary dimension. Great book for teachers and anyone wanting to take their quilting to a new level.

  3. I think this is an outstanding book by Maggie Grey and Val Campbell-Harding. I just bought an embellisher, so appreciated the section dealing with this new tool. I know the art style isn't for everyone, but it is just the ticket for my taste.

ps: I wanted to add something to this review, as I realize that I didn't give enough information initially. I have been cutting back on my art/craft book buying lately. I own literally hundreds of books, and think it's time to sit back and use what I've got before adding any more. Despite that, I checked this book out of the library one day and ordered it from Amazon the very next day. I think that any textile artist who is ready to stretch his/her wings and experiment in new directions will get not only super ideas - but excellent instruction. I would not recommend any book unless I truly believe that others would find it at least inspiring, and hopefully both inspiring AND including some good working information. I know that the textile art world encompasses many diverse styles; from traditional handwork to outrageous experimentation. This book is for the experimental end of the spectrum and would put off most traditionalists. However, if you find yourself thinking you might like to play in the sandbox with some new tools, this book is a good place to land.

  4. But not enough closeup pictures or details on what was done on most of the items. Would have enjoyed more detail on the techniques.

  1. This book is one of the best I've seen. There are some well written and well-organised sections dealing with the principles of composition, colour and stitching techniques. Gloria usually starts her landscapes with a painted background, so she gives a short well-illustrated section on fabric painting. Most of that stuff is available elsewhere, but it is assembled and illustrated particularly well.
The second half of the book contains details of her construction methods. One of those is using freezer paper on the right side of the fabric for appliqued shapes. The second - her signature style - is pieced sections on point, blended into the applique design. She gives clear diagrams
and inspiring examples of this technique. She then gives some examples of how to achieve different effects for trees, water and reflections. There is a gallery of student work, and two fully illustrated projects with paper patterns included at the back.
In my view this is excellent value, a perfect blend of practical tips and inspiration.

  2. I like this book because it shows me lots of different ways to make designs on fabrics. I can use them in my own designs. Don`t have to make copys of others designs.

  3. Just as the title describes, this book is filled with luminous, georgous quilts and every secret you need to know on how to make your own. Gloria has given detailed instructions and methods on how to create every aspect of landscapes, backgrounds, forgrounds, sky, oceans, animals along with details on how to combine fabrics, apply paint and she has even included patterns. This book is easy to understand and recommended for beginners or advanced quilters wanting to take their creative abilities to a new level.

  4. Luminous Landscapes exceded all my expectations. I was fortunate to attend Gloria's workshop in 2004 in Durban, South Africa and enjoyed every minute. It is wonderful to have the book now to refresh my mind, to give more inspiration and to learn new techniques. The book is very good worth for money and very well and clearly illustrated. Instructions are easy to follow. I can highly recommend it to fellow-quilters.

  5. Luminous Landscapes: Quilted Visions in Paint and Thread A beautiful book with helpful techniques.

  1. Somehow the authors of this book have managed to provide inspiration and valuable information to beginners as well as experts in needlecraft. The authors display examples of the very best of the art of embroidery. It is wonderful to see what can be done in this gentle craft, and they are also provide a beginner's example of the essential technique. The visuals in the book are lovely and the instructions are clear and helpful. If you buy just one book on embroidery, I think this has to be your choice. Many hours of enjoyment in just one book.

  2. Excellent book for people who need an overall introduction to the various needlework techniques, with an easy to follow stitch guide.

  3. I purchased this book several months ago, and have been very excited about trying out some of the projects outlined in the text. While the book has many beautiful ideas, the instructions provided to accompany the projects are very flawed. I have tried to complete three of the projects thus far,and every set of instructions has been full of mistakes. The text often inverts the color of threads to be used, leading the embroiderer to stitch in the wrong colors, or uses a different colored thread in the illustration than is indicated in the directions. Also, the instructions often tell you to buy certain colors in DMC floss, when those colors are only made by Anchor, etc. The projects are lovely, but the embroiderer must pay careful attention to the directions and often self-correct during the stitching process to complete the piece. Additionally, the binding is very poor in this book. After only a few uses, the pages began falling out. I had to disbind the book and place the pages in a three-ring binder to keep them together.

  4. I agree with the comments of Linda Lahse Lange that this is a superb book. I have never done work like the book shows; however, this book inspires me to want to learn how, especially attending a school like the Royal School of Needlework. I will be a beginner as to the techniques in this book, however, I know I can grasp them. I love art, especially elegant, creative art. This book portrays serious needlework. HURRAH FOR THIS BOOK!!!!!Royal School of Needlework Embroidery Techniques

  5. No one can besmirch the publisher of this book as the Royal School of Needlework is the "big kahuna" of world-renowned schools of the needle arts. This book covers 4 serious stitching techniques: silk shading, crewel, blackwork and goldwork. It does not have to be relegated to a learning textbook, though, because the histories and illustrations are simply marvellous to behold. This makes the book appropriate for even the beginner to own although it is clearly directed to the experienced stitcher. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It holds a most honored place in my extensive needlework library.
