5 comments about Brazilian Three-Dimensional Embroidery: Instructions and 50 Transfer Patterns (Dover Needlework Series).
- This book truly is unique. No other book I have ever read gives such fine instructions on how to...and also provides you with such intricate designs. Now a days, you see books on how to, plenty of instruction, but they are really cheap with designs. Not this book! Money well invested.
If you're wanting to learn to how do Brazilian embrodiery...this is your book!
- In fairness, I would have given a 2.5 rating if that were available. Admittedly, this is a reasonably priced book, so one doesn't lose much by giving it a try. My problem with it, is that it is heavy on the "tell" and not very good at the "show." While the embroidery stitches are explained with (very basic) line drawings, the actual flower designs are described in writing with no sequential drawings. This leaves the reader flipping back and forth between the earlier "stitch glossary" pages trying to work out how each flower is made. The book is probably fine for a more advanced hobbyist who is mainly interested in the iron-on transfer patterns. I would not recommend it to a beginner or to someone who has no knowledge of basic three-dimensional embroidery stitches.
- Got excited about this one when I saw it, but found the designs WAAAAY to intricate. This may be a matter of taste, or the nature of Brazilian embroidery, but the book is definitely full of very similar-looking designs. It just wasn't what I was looking for in transfer patterns.
- where is the book gone ?
will i get replacement ?
thanks
- I have not tried the patterns or instructions in this book. I collected it to place in my hobby library and look forward to studying it at a future date. S. Robertson

- Very classy designs. Easy to follow. I've used this book more than any others. Wish there were more books available by Adriaan and Joke De Vette.
- This book is very fun and seems to be easy to do. It has a great deal of interesting items in it and I am looking forward to making everything in it.
- This book has 69 designs for every occasion. It has beautiful designs -- some are simple and some are complicated. Many of the designs are single line stem stitch, but the author also has a long stem stitch which outlines the design in a raised cordlike line. Some of the instructions are not clear but the book was first published in the Netherlands so perhaps it has to do with translation. I would only recommend this book to an experienced paper stitcher due to some of the vague descriptions.
- This is a wonderful book with a variety of patterns. A great addition to any paper embroidery library.

4 comments about The Art of Silk Ribbon Embroidery.
- Surely the best book on Silk Ribbon Embroidery available. The materials needed, each embroidery knot shown with a line drawing, projects galore, including brooches, ring bearers pillow, heart picture frame, heart pendents, beautiful sewing cases bedecked with silken roses, and more. Judith visits with well known silk ribbon embroiderers in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, each tells their design secrets.A wonderful section on the Australian photo transfer process for putting your favorite photos on fabric so you can embroider a garden around them
- I have to say this: I just don't like her style. She likes to do very cluttered things using multiple types of embroidery, and I think many of her examples and projects are quite hideous.
I was hoping for more of a primer on silk ribbon embroidery. And while there is a useful section of reference stitches, and a nice beginning section on the history of silk ribbon embroidery & necessary supplies... I wish there was more technique and less projects. Unfortunately, Ms. Montano's other books which seem to be stitch dictionaries only have small sections of silk ribbon embroidery stitches & no technique section. Unfortunately, this is the best beginner book out there that I have run across thus far -- but to be sure I would dump this book in a heartbeat if I came across a good primer/reference book. In a nutshell: why would someone take such a beautiful technique and make such ugly things? The projects verge from overly country to bizzarely overadorned.
- I loved this book because it included ideas on how to use silk embroidery in a modern way rather the victorian way. The works "Zane Gray Trail" and "The Desert Garden" are not in that fussy Victorian tradition.

2 comments about Not Your Mama's Stitching: The Cool and Creative Way to Stitch It To 'Em (Not Your Mama's).
- I was looking for a book to learn some basic embroidery techniques, and for some simple, fun project ideas that were not too "old-fashioned" or flowery. But this book went too far in the other direction, and was too trendy and sassy for my liking.
Although I did like some of the project ideas and designs, this book mostly spent more time trying to be cheeky and hip (with project titles like "Laptop Dance" for a laptop case design, or "Tie Me Up" for a man's tie project that no man I know would ever wear, or "Wash Your Damn Hands" on a hand towel) than just teaching skills and techniques. It was way too wordy, trying too hard to be fun and funky. The instructions were not very concise or easy to follow, and there were hardly any photos or diagrams to show techniques.
I returned this book, and found a book in my library that is exactly what I was looking for, and will be ordering that instead: "Embroidery Basics" by Betty Barnden.
- Kate Shoup Welsh, Wiley, 2008, ISBN 978-0-470-09516-4. $14.99
Don't you just love this title? It's lways bothered me that needlework, especially needlepoint, had such a stuffy reputatio. I kee[ thinking about Cosmo's wife in the movie Topper.
So I am as happy as can be with the developments which are making stitching unstuffy.
And this book really delivers on its promise, starting from the very beginning and delivering instruction and great projects in an engaging style.
The book is divided into two sections. The first covers the basics including what to buy, a history of needlework, techniques, and stitches. It's outstanding at showing the different types of materials, how techniques differ, and what supplies to buy. Something I rarely see in any beginner's book are the charts which display coverage of different threads, different types of fabric & the techniques used on them, and what size needle to use. It's one of the most useful parts of the book, With this you won't end up with huge mismatches in materials.
In the chapter on techniques you will learn more useful stuff like how to tape and mount fabric, ways to start your thread, and finishing techniques. The stitch chapter has enough different stitches to get you started.
The second section of the book has 24 projects, including ones from well-known stitchers like Amy Holbrook of AMH Designs and Jenny Hart, author of Sublime Stitching: Hundreds of Hip Embroidery Patterns and How-To. Each project tells you up front the technique, the cost, and the skill level needed.
The instructions are clear and really complete. Diagrams, line drawings, and charts are large and easy to read.
Best of all each project has one variation. Sometimes this is an coordinating project, sometimes it's another project using the same technique, and sometimes it's a variation. But they all capitalize on the information presented with even more to spark your imgination.
Do you know someone who wants to learn to stitch but thinks it's too hard? Are you looking for fun projects? Do you know someone who takes an unstuffy approach to needlework -- Get them this book, they'll love it and so will you!

- This book has some wonderful, tasteful embroidery ideas. I highly recommend it. The instructions are clear...I completed some of my first projects out of this book (including the pillowcases illustrated on the cover!) ENJOY!
- This is a wonderful book for beginners, or those like myself whose skills from childhood are extremely rusty. The projects are beautifully photographed and encourage you to dream of the beauty you can create with very simple stitches artfully done! This would make a great gift.
- The projects in this book are simple, but elegant. Just a little bit of work adds a personal touch to anything in the home. Also wonderful ideas for gifts.
- I really love this book! It has a bunch of fun fresh designs for more novice embrioders. I first rented this from the Library and I loved it so much that I bought it! I highly suggest this book!
- This book is full of delightful ideas for the home if you're into the light, cottage look. I will be making use of it for sure - can't wait to get started!

- Having purchased and used J. Marsha Michler's "Ribbon Embroidery" book, I was thrilled to find " Shadow Work Embroidery : With 108 Iron-On Transfer Patterns"
Another excellent book for the novice, which will give me hours of pleasure. Her comments are always very informative. Another great buy!
- Michler provides in her book exactly what the title announces so I shouldn't have expected more. There are many transfer patterns with the basic instructions. I was hoping for some suggestions for projects. If you are looking for lots of designs to transfer this is a good value for the money.
- Excellent..So glad to have it among my resources for ribbon embroidery. Such a variety of pattern, you can't decide where to start
- I purchase iron-on transfer books for the Comfort Blanket Ministry of St. Ferdinand Church. It is a blessing that such books are still available - we use these iron-ons for painting and marker coloring which ultimately become squares in our ministry's beautiful blankets. Keep selling these kinds of books, we'll keep buying them!

3 comments about A Passion for Punchneedle (That Patchwork Place).
- This is the kind of craft that amazes people - they have no idea how easy it is to do because it looks so great. This is my second purchase of her books and if you join her yahoo group you find she comments regularly with even more tips. The tools used are reasonable in price and I don't think this craft is going to go away this time - no more 60's drawings - this embroidery goes fast and the themes are timeless. If you want inspiration check out what others are doing on the site.
- Just got this book and have already completed one designed. Its easy to read and produce the many
styles this book has to offer. I would recommend this book for beginners. Its a keeper!
- This is a great book, with designs from many different people. The instructions and color lists are very good, and the projects all look fun to make--haven't had time to make them all yet!

2 comments about Quilt and Embellish in One Step! (In One Step).
- If you love hand quilting and decorative embellishment, you will find this book simply amazing! The techniques are fresh and exquisitely beautiful and surprisingly easy to do! In addition to the beautiful step-by-step projects, there is a fourteen page gallery of lovely quilts that will give you all the inspiration you'll need to use these techniques on your own quilts. Linda explains the concept of choosing a quilt pattern and deciding how to embellish. Gone are my days of being stuck not knowing how to quilt a top once it is pieced or appliqued! This book is a must have for every hand quilter's library!
- It took a little longer to get here than I expected, but it arrived in very good condition. I was very happy with my order.

- This is a clear and concise book.A good choice if you ever wanted to learn to do landscape quilts. The instructions and pictures make it very easy to understand. Her method for making and attaching bindings is worth having the book besides all the other useful information.
- I'm just starting to try to develop my own quilts. This was very informative on material types. Would recommend.
