  1. Dover coloring books have the best quality pictures of any coloring book out there. These are wonderful supplements to any homeschoolers curriculum. The text at the bottom is outstanding. Your children will beg to do their coloring books even when it's not school time.

  2. I really appreciate this coloring book, it has added to our History curriculum; TruthQuest. I love that the kids can color a picture about what we are reading about, it helps them get a glimpse back in time. My kids look forward to this part of the lessons and has made the sometimes boring subject of History come to life for them. I'm glad I found this book.

  1. I think I have all of the FamilyFun books now and Boredom Busters is just as great as the others. By using common items found around the house kids can find lots of fun things to make and do. I highly recommend all of the FamilyFun books and magazine as well. Neither you or your kids will be disappointed.

  2. I bought this book, as well as the FamilyFun Craft book. It is a great book with great ideas for a wide range of ages. There are so many good ideas, its hard to know which to do first! I also liked that it is spiral-bound, it makes it easier to look at the projects.

  3. This book is worth its weight in gold! There are activities, games, ideas, etc. suitable for any occasion. I have a son and a daughter, am a boy scout and a girl scout leader, entertain numerous neighborhood children and bring crafts into my children's classrooms often. A great deal of the activities I do comes from this book alone. I have a full time career also, so I don't always have a lot of time to plan and this book makes it possible. Even if I don't follow an idea exactly, I receive inspiration for other activities/crafts and always find a use for any type of container, paper roll, rocks, pinecones, etc. So if you want a book that not only has great craft ideas but also ideas for groups, games, things to keep your kids entertained while they're waiting for dinner; then this is your book! Have fun and enjoy!

  4. If you're a mom of a toddler, preschooler, or elementary age child, get a subscription to the magazine Family Fun, and then get this book as well as "My Great Idea" put out by that magazine. Soooo many wonderful and creative ideas for those of us who are a bit challenged when faced with playing with a youngster!

  5. Nice ideas and covers a big age span. I ended up buying several copies as they make great gifts for parents weith young children.

  1. I bought two copies, one for my 9 yr old daughter and one for her friend. They love it and have had the most fun with these creations. I do recommend a little adult help and guidance with the different crafts.

  2. We used this little book as the basis for a flower fairy birthday party for a six year old, and it was a huge success, and considerably less expensive than renting Little Gym or another insitutional party place.

We made several decorations and the gorgeous flower fairy wands.

All of the projects would probably require adult assistance for a child under 10, but they are really lovely and worth any effort.

  3. I bought this book, along with Sweet Pea's Garden: Special Things to Make and Do ~ A Flower Fairies Friends Book & How to Host a Flower Fairy Tea Party, to help me with my daughter's fairy birthday party. The crafts are exquisite as well as resonably easy to do. Most items can be easily found around the house or your nearest craft store. I love the crafts in both this and Sweet Pea's Garden. Both books are easy to do although I think Sweet Pea works best for our smaller fairies while this book would be perfect for an upscale girls tea party. I loved the little stories and the illustrations that were woven through the book. The only thing that dissapointed me was that there weren't any recipes. If there had been three or four little recipes that would have rounded out the book perfectly. I fell in love with the little cake in the picture of the table setting at the beginning of chapter three. The crafts included invitations, bookmarks, wings, skirts, fairy dolls with a fairy land playground, jewelry, etc. My favorite crafts were the playground and the blooming tableware. Both were made to decorate my daughters table and they were absolutely beautiful. This made for a magical day. Oh, and there are instructions for a Violet Choker by Heidi Boyd at the DIY website.

  4. for all who love fairies or crafts, this is a perfect book. Great ideas, wonderful processes and beautiful products!

  5. This book had a lot of really wonderful ideas, however, most of the crafts are for older children and my party was for 6 year olds and younger. I made the fairy braclets for the girls myself as it was a little time consuming. For kids 8+ this is a wonderful book with some really cute ideas.

  1. I think that writing this book with my mom was really interesting. Everyone will enjoy doing crafts with their family. There so many ideas in this book. My favorite projects were making stuffed animals and mod-podge purses. The stuffies are cute and cuddly and there's room for one in everybody's heart. The purses are very stylish and unique. This book is wonderful and you should definitely buy it.

  2. Within minutes of opening this smartly designed treasure-trove of craft ideas, the DIY kids of all ages in our household were designing icons, party invitations, and clothes for a community of real and imaginary friends. Beautiful and practical, this easy-to-use guide also teaches that we can liberate ourselves from our roles as passive consumers to create personally expressive and useful works of art--for the ages or just for today. Of course, the concept of a graffiti couch has also sparked intelligent debate around the breakfast table. A family-bonding bible, with or without hot glue.

  3. i just love this book! i have tons of arts & crafts books because i like to engage my children's creativity. this book is one of the best! it's not only a compilation of creative activities that children and even grown-ups will enjoy doing. it's also a testament to the ingenuity of children as it showcases dozens (or is it hundreds?) of beautiful, quirky and interesting things made by children. the activities in the book will also spark your mind to think of other diy activities. most of the materials required in the book can be found in any home with kids. some require the use of a computer. you can always modify the activities to use whatever you have on hand.

the authors say that the book is for "families ... saying no to endless consumerism and yes to art, craft, and home-grown media." if that's you, then you must have this book! i'm buying the luptons' other books right now!

  4. It's rare that I find a DIY book with more than two or three projects in it that I'm interested in. This baby only has two or three projects that I'm NOT interested. And most of the ideas are ones I'd never thought of before. If you're a crafter, you know how awesome that is!

  1. Volume 2 of Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book has given me even more opportunities to share this wonderful, relaxing experience with friends of all ages - and to enjoy this peaceful, centering activity. Kudos to the author and creator!

  2. Author, artist, transpersonal psychotherapist and business person all describe what Monique Mandali is, but do not tell you who she is. I've been privileged to meet Monique and I know that she is a seeker traveling her path. Her walking stick is her love for all, especially children. Ms. Mandali offers a series of four coloring books for children and adults. There are three different delights in the original Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book series, each consisting of 22 designs. While the original three books in the series contain designs by the author, the latest (and perhaps greatest) has 25 peace mandalas from children all around the world. The Peace Mandala Coloring Book is very special because the mandalas are designed by children unencumbered by the pressure of adult living. Further, they bring a variety of spiritual as well as geographical cultures to bear.

Monique Mandali has given us something special. Not only do we find drawings to color that can aid in health and serenity...Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book Series is additionally special because they represent the best part of Monique Mandali, her love!

  3. I purchased the whole series. At times different forms call for my attention and the additional selection is definitely appreciated. The variety is quite good. They range from simpler to complex, with open spaces which leave room for my own variations. The author's designs seem to create a sacred space in which the individual's own light can shine, even if all they want to do is simply "color" a bit. I would expect this flexibility to make them accessible to people with widely varying skills: children, many disabled persons, the elderly, the imaginative and the gifted artist, as well and most of us who are somewhere in between. Yet they are undemanding so that no one need miss out on the calm center and its healing.

  4. I recently discovered the Mandala and being the inquisitive person that I am I decided to try my hand at creating my own. This is just one of the coloring books I orderd by this author. Very enjoyable!

  5. A wonderful book...big designs (not to complicated) gives enough room for coloring paterns...just be careful with the markers, pages are thin and colors go through it(luckly there is one design per page only)...have fun.

  1. Thank you for bringing these wonderful coloring books to Amazon.com! Year after year, at Minneapolis's Art a Whirl I look forward to finding Kendall Bohn's art studio because of the colorful and intellectual art he produces. Kendall is an artist who has not forgotten our children (and the children at heart) and their need for abstract, creative and fun art. Each coloring book is a flawless masterpiece which makes them a fantastic gift for cultivating imagination. At any age, anyone can color one of these beautiful pages to match any room and frame them for all to admire. I look forward to your continued releases!

  2. I love abstract coloring and when I ordered this product I came to find out that this was like no other abstract coloring I had experiened. I love this abstract coloring book and I would most definiatly recomend this to anybody that loves to color abstract coloring pages. There is so many posibilites with each coloring page in this book. No two people would get the same out of the same coloring pages. This is the most wounerfull book that i have ever spent money on . I LOVE THIS BOOK. i hope that you also get to have as much fun as i did with this book.

  3. I loved the designs in this book. I would definately purchase this again as a gift for a young artist.

  4. Get out your crayons, colored pencils, gel pens, paints, or any combination of all of them and prepare to have hours of relaxing creativity turning out vibrant finished pages that will amaze you with their beauty.

Photocopy the pages so you can rework the designs over and over again, incorporating them into greeting cards, post cards, scrap books, or any crafts project you can devise!

Now, how can you resist that much fun?

  1. I used several ideas in this book to teach an afterschool bookmaking class for K-3rd graders. The books are eye-catching and pretty simple to make, although I did a bit of prep work for the kids.

It was really wonderful to see how much the children loved their projects. They were extremely creative and innovative too, every child made the book their own by doing something interesting or different with the materials provided. This is in stark contrast to several adult bookmaking classes I've taken, where the adult students want to recreate the teacher's book EXACTLY.

Anyway, I highly recommend this book to anyone is willing to spend some time making books with kids. Children older than 4th grade MIGHT be able to use this book independently, depending on their experience and motivation.

Regardless, I think this book is wonderful for showing kids just how fascinating and rewarding it can be to make their very own books.

  2. Good ideas for books to make with kids, and also some basic ideas to further explore in more complex books.

  3. I recently purchased this book and have found it to be a terrific resource for teaching children how to make beautiful books. The instructions and diagrams are easy to follow and very clear. My favourite is the T.V. book. The children in my class had a blast making these books.

  4. As a teacher, this book is a great resource for ideas to show students how to write and product there own work of literature. We used the book as the basis for a "Make a Book Night" sponsored by our PTA. Students and their parents attended a night of book making and story writing choosing from one of the many book ideas presented in the book. It was a great experience for one and all. If you love books, like to write poetry, stories or journals I highly recommend purchasing

Making Books That Fly, Fold, Wrap, Hide, Pop Up, Twist & Turn: Books for Kids to Make

  5. I was SO disappointed in this book. I'm an experienced card maker but thought there might be a simple idea that I could expand on. Not only were there no useable ideas, the pictures were awful and the explanations were pretty bad. I would hate to have to teach using this book! It was a total waste of money. I can't believe that Amazon recommended this book in an email to me because I had bought "similar items" before. It was NOT similar in quality nor content.

3 comments about Life in Ancient Greece Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Book).
  1. I use the Dover coloring books often as I home school. The kids are busy, quiet AND they listen. It really helps to reinforce the lessons when they color the same things that they are learning about. There is a Dover book for most major subjects!

  2. I like this coloring book for children because it will help bring lessons on Ancient Greece to life and reinforce basic facts. It is organized primarily by chronology, has fairly complex drawings with enough detail and background for interest, and most significantly contains a brief historical note at the bottom of each picture. It includes highligts like Solon introducing reforms, Hipparchus being assasinated, Socrates being found guilty and condemned to death and Aristotle tutoring young Alexander. It also includes more general topics like weddings and funerals, the market, shipping and more. There is some male nudity (not frontal) like at the Gymnasium and Olympics. There is some incorporation of Greek mythology (like sculpting of a statue of Hermes, and consulting an oracle at Delphi.) Note, however, the art is not done in Ancient Greek style, but rather more realistic, scene by scene.

This is good for any grade schooler or even a high schooler who still likes to color. The covers and inside covers have art which are the colored scenes of ones found in the book, so there is also some direction or incentive to make the art come to life.

Useful alone or with a curriculum.

  3. I am using this resource with homeschool Pre to 2nd grade children. This coloring book helps Greece come to life with pictures of markets, shipping, a wedding, several different tradesmen at their trade, children playing, senate, theater, school, ect...

One warning, four pages (out of roughly 45 pictures) have nudity: two of Olympic games and one gym (tastefully covering the front, but showing male backsides) and then one of a topless dancing/acrobatic girl at a party. I choose to scan them, in order to give them clothing.

Other content: there are solider scenes with weapons bristling, but only two battle scenes (one on water and one on land). For battle scenes both are tasteful, even for younger dc. It also includes about four pages of religious ceremonies/scenes, including the oracle at Delphi.

Overall an excellent resource; very well done!!
