3 comments about Habanos: The Story of the Havana Cigar.
  1. I thought of this book, as a trip without leaving home. I was at the vegas,,the people homes, the factories and, even the streets of Habana.I really enjoyed the way the author Nancy Stout, put together the history (from start to finish)of one of Cuba's most treasured and coveted commodity-La Habana "puros". When it comes to it's people and their beloved cigars,it defines recognition both in art and history! I give the book a 4-thumbs up!!!!! A must read for a "habanaphile" such as myself. To be read with the accompany of a sweet aromatic habano burning, and perhaps also, with your favorite spirit.Truly a book to be enjoyed over and over again!

  2. Wonderful illustrations combined with interestiong text make this more than a coffee table book. For Smokers of Habanos and those curious to learn more behind the cuban cigar this is an excellent book.

  3. For a habanophile such as myself this has to be the best book that I have read to date on Cuba and Cuban Cigars. This book not only describes the habano from seed to cigar but explores the history of the cigar and it's relationship with Cuba from Columbus to the old factories. If you want more than just the typical seed, plant, harvest, cure, roll em books on Cuban cigars this is the one for you.

2 comments about Shanken's Cigar Handbook: A Connoisseur's Guide to Smoking Pleasure.
  1. As a newcomer to the world of fine handmade cigars, I found in Shanken's Cigar Handbook a very comprehensive and cozy text. All the answers to the questions of fresh cigar aficionados are in there. Lots of great colorful pictures and cigar brand data too. Make this your reference book! Bill Cosby's merciless foreword is magnificent.

  2. This is an outstanding guide that will be useful for new cigar lovers as well as veteran smokers. It does need an update, and I would recommend a section devoted to small cigars and cigarillos, which are becoming more popular.

  1. The book was well researched and very well presented. The photography was excellent. For the money, this is a great book and a must have for all Zippo lighter collectors.

  2. Don't waste your money on this one. Full of pictures: yes. Info?: no. It's full of pictures of lighters you will never run across. Go with Poore's book.

  3. this is a great gift for my SO who is interested in collecting these lighters.

  1. I really loved this little gem! It's small in size but's packed with huge flavor.

Clever writing by Marvin R. Shanken. I look forward to reading more from this connoisseur - over a fine cigar and possible cognac.

    Here's one he left out;

"Try enjoying a fine cigar along with a cesar with a touch of tabasko sauce and grainbelt beer chaser."

    - Michael A. Mosher- Human Interface Designer

  2. Top notch quotes from your favor famous people just loving their best things of life. . . CIGARS!!

  3. This LITTLE book (roughly 2 inches by 3 inches) is just a collection of quotes about cigars by mostly famous people, interspersed with only 10 actual tips on cigar smoking etiquette and methods. A short entertaining bathroom read, but by no means is this a guide or "instruction" manual.

  5. This tiny gift-book from CIGAR AFICIONADO latches onto the celebratory nature of modern cigar-smoking and works it for all its potential. Essentially, it's a compilation of quotes by cigar smokers and about cigar smoking that will give the average celebratory cigar smoker a good chuckle.

A good stocking-stuffer for the guy who fits the demographic.

  1. This is the leading book on cigarette lighter collecting. There are nearly 1000 lighters illustrated in color. The variety is incredible. From Zippo to Dunhill and so many more. There is even a value guide to give you an idea of value. This is the authors third book on lighters and they really went all out to make this the best book ever.

5 comments about Zippo: The Great American Lighter : Including the Poore Guide to Zippo Prices (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
  1. David Poore's book is the first english-only book to focus entirely on Zippo lighters. It should be on the shelf of every lighter collector. The pictures are well done and the date code explanation appears to be accurate.

However, recent discoveries have rendered the book obsolete, and a new edition is needed that incorporates the new findings. The sections on Metalliques, the Zippo Car, Town & Country artwork, and the Zippo Rule contain incorrect information.

There is little or no information about the rare Canadian, Advertising, or Emblem Zippo lighters. There are also some problems with the structure of the book itself.

For instance, each lighter is given an "access code." However, there is no explanation for what this access code is, nor a frame of reference that ties a given access code in with a corresponding Zippo ID number, resulting in painstakingly compiled information that is confusing and not very helpful. Also, although the section on advertising lighters is very sparse, there are references to "generic advertisers" and "featured advertisers." What is a "featured advertiser?" What is a "generic advertiser?" No explanation for these terms, or for how to determine whether a given lighter is one or the other, creates additional confusion. Several of the captions refer to different values for "featured" versus "generic" advertisers, so this is obviously a correction that is badly needed.

Despite these caveats, David Poore's book deserves to be owned by every collector of tobacciana. I bought two copies of the first edition, and eagerly look forward to a new edition that corrects the flaws of the first.

  2. The Bible of Zippo, packed with info, prices out of date, but the information alone is outstanding. Tons of Pics, dating and history of the Zippo. Awesome!

  3. While the 1st edition of David Poores "Bible" of Zippo guides was outstanding his 2nd edition falls short. This would have been a great opportunity to add new pictures, variations and other information, instead what we get is the same old info from the 1st edition with updated pricing.

  4. I bought this book for my boyfriend who is just starting to collect lighter's. He just loves it. He has it by his side when ever he is looking at one to buy on-line. It has the prices and great photo's.This book has alot of info on Zippo's. Very easy to understand. Plus it keep's him busy! LOL You will enjoy this book.David Poore has done a great job with this book. I've never seen the first addition but we really like this one.

  5. First the good:
*Probably one of the best books written about Zippos, and is a good book for begining collectors to start with.
    *Some good photos
    *Easy to read

    Now the bad:
*Values are out of date. Any book written will be out of date regarding prices, but you can use the prices as a comparative value of lighters.
*The author has too many photos of one-of-a-kind and prototype Zippos. So basically he is just showing us his collection. This is interesting, but doesn't help a collector, because you and I will never come across those same lighters. It would be more helpful to show pictures of the Zippos we might actually come across in the real world.
*The book is sometimes in chronological order, sometimes not. It would be helpful to keep it all chronological.

    In summry:
There aren't many good books on Zippos in the first place, so by default this is probably the best.
Your best bet is to have more than one lighter books if you are serious about collecting.

  1. This is a book about Cuban cigars, past and present, and only about them. In reality, it is a book for the more serious smoker as the information is rather specialised. The book tells you which company made what cigars and whether they exist today or not. And of present cigars, it tells you which factory produces them and in what form of packing. This is THE defintive guide to date and I have read no other but be warned, it's about Cuban leaf and the book is not casual reading, it is more of a reference.

4 comments about The Good Cigar.
  1. This is a useful and well-written cigar guide. It is getting a bit dated, but it is still very good for all cigar lovers.

  2. The Good Cigar is to your brain what your tobacconist's walk-in humidor is to your nose. It's a cornucopia of history, anecdotes, and general cigar lore that makes you want to relax and stay a while.

Jeffers and Gordon start their history with the original tobacco lovers, the indigenous people of the Americas. Then they discuss the introduction and development of tobacco in Europe and the New World. Jeffers and Gordon acquaint us with many of the people who have influenced our image of cigars (Mark Twain, Groucho Marx, Ernest Hemingway, etc.) and give quotation buffs a nice supply of material. From the "Wooden Indian" to cigar boxes and bands, they explore the history and artistry of cigar paraphernalia.

The authors include a cigar index complete with their personal ratings of each cigar. The book shows its age here, as some of the cigars are no longer sold. This doesn't necessarily detract from the book. You just might run into somebody who's had a box aging for several years and is willing to trade a few sticks. In a situation like this, an older index of cigars would be helpful.

Jeffers and Gordon also cover humidors, cutters, and lighters. They even include a resource guide. These sections might lead the cigar neophyte to believe that cigar smoking is a costly pursuit, but this doesn't have to be the case. Less expensive and perfectly functional accessories are readily available; but as Winston Churchill warned, "Shoddiness can be found easily, in quantity" (I got that from this book). Choose carefully. There are several Internet message boards devoted to cigars that would be more helpful than this book in finding accessories that fit your taste and budget.

  3. I just picked this book up recently (2007) and though the book is getting on in age, it really holds up today. The first half of the book discussed history of tobacco, cigars, and smoke shops. The authors can really tell a good story and their historylessons were highly entertaining.

  4. A fine book on cigars. I completely enjoyed this book and refer to it often.
