1. This book is so fun and easy to read, it actually got me, a non-player, interested in bridge. Then when the internet came along, I was able to play easily using the Yahoo! servers. That's when I picked it up again.

   It's organized logically: 35 lessons, 1 per day for 5 weeks, in the following order: rules, scoring, bids, notrumps, rebids, slams, competitive bids, doubles, finesse, squeezes, and on to esoteric tips that only the masters need to learn about. It covers the conventions naturally, as they come up, and also lets you know which ones are frequently needed and which are "once in a blue moon." There are plenty of examples and self-tests along the way, which let you know if you need to reread a section.

   Best of all is the writing - Sheinwold is witty, making you feel like an insider to the world of smart bridge playing. If you're a beginner, you'll find him lucid and easy to follow; even a pro should take tips from the later sections. You needn't get far through the book before you start wishing you had a better partner, which I think is probably the ultimate test of any bridge book.

   Sheinwold himself is an interesting fellow - a native of Great Britain, he grew up in the USA, then headed the Department of Codes and Ciphers of the O.S.S. during World War II. He returned to bridge when the war was over, making his living at playing and writing about bridge.

   This book was written in 1959, but isn't dated at all, and its long life should be the best testimony to its merit. There are two very, very mildly misogynistic jokes ("who can ever tell what a woman is thinking?" is the worse of them) scattered in the text, which were well within the bounds of repartee in 1959, but which don't seem appropriate in 2003. That's the only bad thing I can find to say.

   If you have any interest in bridge, you ought to read this book!

1. The set of Tarot cards accompanying this book is best used by focusing on the 21 cards of the Major Arcana. These cards are colorful. The symbols are unique, having been generated by a computer graphic artist, Michael Hobbs. He uses symbols from various traditions (eg. Egypt, China, India, Judaism, Astronomy) to focus concisely on basic archetypes. Meditation on the Major Arcana brings to the surface new memories and insights. Astrological symbols are assigned to each card. The accompanying book gives the author's explanation for the astrological symbols. Each explanation includes a brief thought on the symbol, an extensive astrological interpretation, and quotes from other Trarot interpreters. The book is a good supplement for an astrologer or tarot reader who wants to combine the work of Tarot and Astrology. The interpretation of the cards of the four suits give brief, but to the point, information. They are best used in astrological readings. The author's understanding of astrology is soundly based. While she does not avoid the down side of life, her overall approach is positive to personal and life situations. I personally found this Tarot book/card set useful for helping me move away from being too analytical. I was able to improve my ability to focus more on the intuitive side of the information. I highly recommend this deck and accompanying book for someone who is in the beginning stages of combining tarot and astrology.

1. This book is pretty worthless. It doesn't give some of the major variation of the game, such as double pack Pinochle where the winner bidders exchange 4 cards and such. Some of the melding scores are incorrect. I would buy a general card rule book, instead of this very outdate and incomplete book.



2. The first reviewer here didn't like the book because it doesn't cover double-deck. I felt the same way about "Winning Pinochle Strategies" because it doesn't cover single-deck. However, if you play single deck pinochle this book is for you.
   
   The author goes through the major variations of the game (3-handed; auction; 2-handed; partnership; etc) and gives tips and strategies for each type. The book was easy to read in my opinion and gave some great tips.
   
   I would recommend this book for anyone looking to improve their single deck game. For $5 it's worth the money.
