  1. I knew I had to have this book the minute I browsed through it. It not only gives you tons of creative ideas, but sparks your creativity to come up with ideas on your own. This is not a step-by-step "how to" book. It's more of a decorating and idea guide.

I loved the carved squash and gourds. You better believe my house will be filled with them next fall. I also loved the simple groupings of candles - whites/creams, fun colors, fun shapes and sizes. And who can resist the various themes: garden, seashore, etc.. Are you starting to see a trend here? The possibilities are endless.

This book sits on my nightstand. I thumb through it every few days or so for ideas. I'll soon be making my own candles, and you better believe I'll be using lots of the ideas I found in this book to display them.

This book proves you don't need a ton of money to do some really awesome decorating. You just need some imagination! BUY IT NOW! It's a great bargain and a lovely and well-made book. No cheesy paper - this is quality stuff with lots of great pictures and captions. You won't be disappointed. This would make a GREAT gift book - pair it up with a couple of candles and some ribbon for a really classy gift.

1 comments about Country Living Decorating with Candles: Accents for Every Room.
  1. I admit I love candles. Lit candles, singly or in groups, offer an ambiance that electrical lighting simply cannot simulate. Candles are a boon for both budget-conscious home-makers and luxury-level interior designers alike.

Country Living's "Decorating with Candles: Accents Throughout the Home" is a pleasure to page through. Written by Maria Ricapito and lavishly photographed by Keith Scott Morton, hundreds of candle decorating ideas are presented.

Some of the book's candle decorating ideas that I especially enjoyed:

    * Pouring wax, with a wick, into large seashells, and lighting in the bathroom, for a seaside theme.
    * Lighting treasured artwork and unique pieces on the mantle with tiny tea lights.
    * Lighting small candles inside milkglass vases and placing them high on shelves for ambient lighting.
    * Placing lighted candles in hurricane lanterns on each step of foyer staircases, to provide architectural height and interest. Alternatively, small votives can light the path from an entry hall into the rest of the house.
    * Found objects can make great candle holders - mis-matched china cups and saucers, terra-cotta flower pots from the shed, old candy and tart tins - whatever you have squirreled away, or whatever you dig up at garage sales.
    * Filling the fireplace with lit candles of all sizes and shapes to enhance your hearth.
    * Mixing floating candles with tiny, lovely wildflowers in clear glass vases. They even suggest floating a few lemons in vases, with the candles and yellow flowers, for a kitchen citrus theme that delights the nose as well as the eyes.
    * Filling Mason jars with sand and inserting tapers, and placing around outdoor porches for a nighttime glow.

I enjoyed the text in this book as well. The author reminds us that not too long ago, candles were the main source of household illumination. She carries the reader through each room in the house, providing interesting candle uses, and suggesting the best kinds of candles to use for each purpose.

There are also sidebars full of "secrets" - How to Make Ice Lanterns and Snowball Lanterns, Citronella Secrets, Giving Candles as Gifts, Removing Wax, Uses for Aromatherapy Scents in Candles and much more.

The last part of the book showcases fabulous holiday candle decorating, starting with Halloween and ending with New Years. This section is well worth a look for those collecting new and unusual decorating ideas for the extended winter and Christmas holiday season.

  1. Excellent book with a good background on etheric oils, how to recognise and combine them and finally how to prepare candles using the different oils. The book has a very nice layout with a lot of pictures inviting to be very creative!
Material needed is quite a lot (especially if you start from scratch) but if preparation of candles is not a "one-shot-event" it is definitely a good investment. After a little bit of training these candles are the best presents to good friends and you can be sure to be invited again! ;-)

  1. As an amateur candle maker, I found this book to be chock full of really great ideas, and easy to do. The ideas are very original and look great in any home. It's full of projects that you will actually want to do, instead of being slanted toward old-school techniques that no one really likes anymore - it's up-to-date! You'll have a harder time finding your supplies at your local craft store than you will completing these projects. Plus, some can be done with store bought candles for those who don't want to get their hands dirty making the actual candles. I highly recommend this book.

  1. This book starts out defining terms and talking about basic techniques/coloring/scenting. It even pictures and defines different types of candles, which I haven't seen in any of the other candle books that I have. It shows: how to twist tapers, paint candles(interesting pics),rubberstamp candles, paint with crayons(I haven't seen this in other books either),use gold leaf with candles, use paper with candles, make photo frame candles (unique),how to make wallpaper candles, shows great wedding candles, how to use materials to make candle designs( doilies, stickers, vellum, matallic paper, beads, fabric applique', sandpaper, tinfoil, stones, mirrors, buttons, tree bark, reeds,
shells, charms, wire, metallic scratching, denture cleanser color effects(very neat)and, small spices/food additive candles). It also shows you how to make wax designs to stick on your candles, make whipped wax candles(some different designs w/ pearls, ect),make cracked candles, goldlog candles, string wrapped candles, dripped candles, stacked candles, iceberg candles,wire/jewel effect candles, and an assortment of beaded candles. It also shows different ways to make holders or candle assessories with beads, tassels, wire, vent caps, and more. There are gift bag ideas and some templates. Every page is covered with pics and as you can see there are endless ideas that are unique. Crafts include pics, instructions and material list for each project in easy reading format. I had forgotten just how many ideas that this book had in it until I sat down to write this review. I think this book would be just fine for a beginner and has inspiration enough for pros.

  1. Whether you make your own candles to decorate or buy them from the store, this is a great book with lots of interesting projects -- something for everyone. The complexity of projects varies, so if you're in the mood for being creative but don't want to spend the whole day at it, you'll be sure to find something that suits you. Definitely a book to have in your collection.

  1. The information is very useful, detailed, and well presented

  2. First impression....all I can say is I guess my dog likes it! I woke up this morning to find the pages of this book strewn all over my yard. What was left of it did seem very informative and useful, so I came back to reorder it. Maybe this time I'll get to see the whole book. LOL

  3. This book covers the basics in candlemaking, what you'll need, wick types, wax types, pouring temps, which is very informative but it lacks in the candle varieties. It seems to focus more on candle decorating. I was looking for tips on making chunk, layered and ice candles to name a few. There also isn't any information on Gel wax or soy wax. There was some helpful information in here, but overall it wasn't what I was looking for in a candle book.
