  1. Great book for anyone wanting to know what the heck kind of bird is sitting at your feeder, OR for anyone simply wanting to attract as many birds to their yard as possible. Great pictures, easy to read -- terrific for the family.

    From the Everette Harald --

Portland, Ore.'s Carol Frischmann has written a new book that's good for the family with children or beginner birders because it takes an ultra-basic approach.
"Attracting and Feeding Backyard Birds" ($10, TFH/Animal Planet) is a primer that includes the top 50 feeder species, how to bring birds to your yard, experimenting with feeders, bird behavior, and birders' backyard bird activities.
Colorfully and heavily illustrated, "Attracting" offers nest box dimensions for five species, the meaning of binocular numbers, feather basics, bird food information, seasonal behaviors, nuisance birds and more, all in small bites for a solid general introduction.

  2. I really enjoyed reading this book.

The author, Carol Frischmann has a great way of dividing the birds by habits or activities, which makes it easy to find the bird by watching what it is doing such as clinging to a tree or mostly on the ground.

For each of the 50 birds listed, she lists birds that it might be confused with due to similarities and indicates the differences that will help you identify the bird you are watching. She has also included pictures of these birds and lets the readers know where in North America that these birds can be found.

The author gives ideas on making your yard bird friendly and how to attract the species of birds you are interested in.

This is a great book for someone just starting out in birdwatching or birdfeeding that can get the whole family involved.

5 comments about Backyard Birds (Peterson FlashGuides (TM)).
  1. This really useful field guide has great drawings of over 100 species found in neighborhoods in US and Canada. Has a simple system to instantly tell you the region and feeding preferences of birds, in other words, where you are most likely to find them. The drawings are beautiful, colorful and accurate, clearly showing the difference between male and female, and defining markings. I've enjoyed mine thoroughly!

  2. My girls and I love this book! What a pleasure to be able to look out our window and now be able to identify the types of birds that live among us. We even now can recognize a bird by sound.

This book includes wonderful pictures with easy to read descriptions of the birds and their habits.

What a great way to spend time with each other having fun exploring and learning.

A book that can be enjoyed at any age.

  3. Excellent photographs of Midwest Birds that will allow you to identify the bird that you see....quickly.

  4. The Peterson guides are a well established in the birding world. I was looking for a good basic introductory book for my young daughter who, like me, enjoys bird watching. This book has a list of the most common birds that we're likely to see in our backyard. I like the way it's divided by feather coloration rather than by species or group of species. This makes it easier for a child to learn to identify the birds in a non-overwhelming way. I plan to buy the rest of the series for our family's field library.

  5. No one who writes a birding book and says "sea gulls" instead of "gulls" is a birder. This is one of the all time no no's for birders. While the book doesn't refer to Canada gees as Canadian geese, it's still a huge mistake. An Eastern guide and a Western guide for young naturalists would be more useful. Editing by a naturalists would help.

1 comments about 50 Common Birds of the Southwest.
  1. The pictures were decent in the book but it really didn't say much or provide information on birds of the greater southwest. It did not cover common species of southeastern New Mexico and may have been better titled "Birds of Arizona". Pretty much a waste of money for me. I'll stick to Audubon books or field guides from NG.

  1. Make a plate-by-plate comparison of the new Waterfowl or Shorebirds guides with the original hardcover editions and you'll see that the sofcover illustrations look like cheap color photocopies. All of the subtlety and detail that made the originals the best field guides of their kind has been lost. Save your money for the used bookstores.

  2. I have purchased this book some five years back in a local book exhibition. Text is accurate especially for one who is interested in bird hunting. But the real feast is the breathtaking illustrstions made by the single artist himself. His painstaking artwork for each species, male&female, juvenile upperwings, lower wings are really fine. Only minus aspect is if the book would have been little bigger the illustrations would have also become bigger.

  4. This book covers all of the shorebirds of the world with 1700 full-color paintings. There are lots of general tips on identifying shorebirds, and each bird is covered extensively. When I first picked up the book at an ABA Teen Birder convention in Colorado, a birder near me said "You have to buy that! Look at the Dunlin page!" Well, the Dunlin page is indeed a good example of this guide's excellence! There are 28 paintings on the page covering the different plumages of the bird and how it looks in flight and from different positions. The text on the adjacent page gives brief descriptions of the bird in each of those plumages and a world range map. It also redirects you to the all-text section of the book that has extensive information on identification, voice, habits, moments, description, age/sex, races, and measurements of the bird. I definitely recommend this book to any birder interested in the identification of shorebirds!
