  1. This is meant to be a guide to the Bead Timeline exhibit in Washington, DC. It does not include the earliest neolithic beads that have been found dating back as far as 100,000 BC. What it does give is a very good commentary on the techniques of bead making from about 12,000 BC up to 1200 CE, and shows good examples from the collection. There is ample information about where beads have been found (everywhere) and it alludes to the role beads have played in cultural diffusion and technological development. As new discoveries are made, the collection will be expanded.

Lankton tells us he hopes that, after seeing a small sample, the reader will want to visit the actual collection. He has convinced me.

5 comments about The Art & Soul of Glass Beads: 17 Bead Artists Share Their Inspiration & Methods.
  1. As a glass artist I am inspired by all that other glass artists accomplish, and this book offered a lot of inspiration. Lovely stuff!

  2. While I do believe that this book has merit, it is as a JEWELRY MAKING BOOK, not as a bead making book. I feel that the Title of the book is misleading.....to me, a "Bead Artist" is a person who MAKES beads, not a person who makes jewelry with beads. That is a "JEWELRY ARTIST". A small point, but significant, since this book is listed under "Lampwork". Nice photographs, and as I said, the book has merit if you are looking for some VERY SIMPLE stringing ideas.

  3. I should have read the other reviews first. If you are looking for a book to outline and explain the technique of glass bead making, THIS IS NOT THE BOOK!!!! Only buy this if you want some pictures of beads or are interested in making jewerely.

  4. I too wish I had read past the first reviewer. Must have been a born optimist!! The best thing about this book, THE PRICE. What a total waste of my time. I learned stringing beads as a toddler! I was looking for a GLASS BEAD BOOK and how to MAKE THEM. Why not put this book with the stringers! Shame on you Amazon for leading us down the wrong path. No wonder this book did not have pictures of the inside. shame shame shame!

  5. This is a great book. Interviews with the artists and description of techniques used for each project. Very creative

  1. The a.m. book's contents are harmless, the author's works shown in this book are hobbyists standards, they definitely lack the authochtoneous touch. Nice guide for beginning and advanced American Indian Hobbyists. For the more serious reader it lacks basic informations needed when describing and picturing objects as knife cases.
The quality of the book itself is poor, pages come loose easily.

  2. An excellent book for beginners to experts. Every element of construction and design is presented and detailed steps are prov ided. Some small details are not included but become readily apparent as one begins the first project. I will be continually using this book as a guide and reference.

1 comments about Knitting Beaded Purses: A Complete Guide to Creating Your Own.
  1. This is a dreadful book. First, the author fluffs out her book by reprinting endless tantalizing photos of antique samples from another book, begging the question, "Why don't I just go buy THAT one?" Second, there are very few designs to make, and they are the author's own (loudly and repetitively credited) simple two-bit three-color interpretations (apparently with crayons) of the beautiful old work reprinted on every page. Third, the technique instructions are extremely poor, practically condensed to "string these beads and knit them like that." There were no books around years ago; I learned from a two-page article by Alice Korach in an old Threads magazine, and dusted up my technique years later with Korach's video and some old, old pamphlets from silk companies. While I'm no expert, I've acquired a certain ability and this book had absolutely nothing to offer me. I realize that some people might want a book to lead them, and I'm glad to see some turning up; however, this is not a good one. I returned it in a heartbeat, regretting the shipping all the way. Bead knitting is a wonderful craft for anyone who loves color, and if you are interested, go find some books or Alice's video at a library or bookstore to get a start.

  1. Start at the cover of this book that features five necklaces. You'll say, "Wow! How can I make these gorgeous little necklace purses?" Author Enid Taylor shows you how. Bead stitching is pretty much the same from book to book, offering the same techniques shown here: brick, square, peyote, and netting stitches. This book is special because Enid shows you how those stitches combine to make a fabulous purse. Enid, a home economics teacher for 24 years, started a craft studio in 1982, so there's lots of teaching experience behind her book. Although her craft studio's focus was on lacemaking, spinning, and needlework, her expertise in beading shines through. Not only are there many techniques shown for the body of the purses, but there are multiple ways shown to make the neckchains and fanciful decorative finishes. If your aim is to concentrate your efforts on amulet necklaces, this is the book for you!

  2. I totally disliked this book...if you want to make craft show type stuff then perhaps this is a good choice but I came lloking for info on how to make high fashion high quality beaded handbags likened to some of todays top designers and thisbag did not even stracth the surface of what I needed. I would only suggest this book for those looking to make little trinkets in thier spare time certainly not for resale.

  3. I would have liked to give this book a 10 STAR rating. I bought this book not just for the purses BUT for the clear and very easy to follow directions for the weaving! I used the stitches I learned in this book for other projets. I am a visual learner and this book is better than more $$$$ books I bought just to learn the stitches. Color through out. I did not find any of the colors muted as another stated.
There are patterns for Brick, Square, Peyote (Which thanks to this book I now can read the patterns!)Netted and square Netting. A very nice Gallery. I intend to write the author.

  4. I think this is the best bead book that I own. I've learned how to make every stitch I use from this book. Really good instruction drawings and good close up photos. Best hands on instruction for learning on your own!

  5. A very interesting and good book for all those like my wife who like doing various crafts. Monies worth and very reliable, efficiant service from amazon.

  1. This is the first book I have come across which explains beading chains and making earrings so clearly. The instructions and diagrams are very simple and easy to follow. The book is filled with BEAUTIFUL designs created by the author. This book is great for beginners and for people wanting to know more about beads before they take it up as a hobby.

  2. The dust jacket on this book is covered with luscious, rhythmical beaded jewelry that invites a look inside. The photography inside the book is just as exciting. There is no history of beads here, just a straight plunge into creating beautiful accessories.

Barbara starts by defining equipment needed, then quickly instructs on two basic techniques: necklace threading and earring making. It takes her only three pages to do it, demonstrating her absolute clarity of instructions.

Now the projects begin with a myriad of design options from which to choose. She winds up by introducing you to do-it-yourself beads, such as polymer clay, air-dry clay and papier-mache', using them effectively in some elegant designs. A helpful glossary and index are at the end.

  3. When I ordered this book, I was looking for something that would have lots of pictures of various kinds of beaded jewelry. I definately found what I was looking for in this book! It's got wonderful photos of designs the author has created, along with how-to instructions (nothing too difficult). Nearly every picture has helped get the creative ideas flowing! It also has a bit on the history of beads, plus a section on making your own beads. Good book for beginners and those wanting pictures for ideas!

  4. Of my several bead books, this is one of my favorites. The instructions are very clear, and the same techniques are used repeatedly for most of the jewelry pieces, for example, stringing the beads on thread, and using calottes to finish the ends. There are a few other techniques also, and I did pick up a few new ones for my own use, for example, how to work with leather thong in jewelry -- braiding it and finishing the ends with findings I hadn't used before.

But what makes me keep this book constantly on hand is its many pictures of jewelry, featuring mostly necklaces with a broad range of bead types. There are a lot of beautiful pieces for giving me ideas for bead combinations, color arrangements, and patterns. The earring section also has some very attractive and easy to make earring styles. Though published several years ago, these designs do not look outdated at all. I see that this book is not currently published and the sellers who have it are selling it at quite a high price, but it could very well be worth it for someone wanting to have a source of ideas.
