4 comments about Collapsible Basket Patterns.
  1. This book mostly consists of large patterns (not reduced) for cutting a flat piece of wood such that it forms a basket when turned on its side. Making such a basket requires skill and access to a jigsaw and bandsaw.

  2. This book is light on instructions - just 3 pages, but HEAVY on patterns. That's because this technique is very easy to learn and do. After a few practice runs, you will be turning out beautiful collapsible baskets with ease. And with over 100 different designs there is a style for everyone. These baskets caught the public eye a couple of years ago, but they are still popular. If you want to make them for fun or profit, this is -the- book for patterns.

  3. This book presents an ingenious, useful and impressive design concept for the woodworker. It is a central spiral cut collapsible basket supported in a frame that can be cut in countless designs.

These baskets are made from a single piece of ¾" hardwood. There are instructions for the bandsaw or scroll saw. Over 100 full page patterns are provided and the size can be adjusted by enlarging or reducing the pattern.

Patterns include farm & wild animals, dinosaurs, teddy bears, people, vehicles, buildings and traditional baskets. Many more designs could be easily adapted to the basic basket technique.

The baskets can be used as candy or trinket dishes and are wonderful with decorative floral arrangements. They collapse for storage or use as a trivet and make great gifts.

  4. This book is good for its plans, I got good skills in my scroll saw with them, the designs are very creative, but I sometime think they are repetitive. I recommend this book for somebody want new ideas to their scroll saw

  1. This is a wonderful collection of patterns that can be completed by scroll sawyers of all skill levels. Each basket is made by cutting a single layer of wood and then stacking and gluing the layers on top of each other. The end product is a basket, candydish, or napkin holder that appears to be woven in the style of those expensive Longerberger baskets now popular on the "Tupperware Party Circut". I have now completed three of these baskets. The amazing thing is no one has yet been able to figure out how they were made. Even my woodworking friends were amazed by this new technique. Patterns for 10 wooden baskets are provided in this 60 page full sized pattern book. Each pattern is accompanied by a photograph of the finished basket and the book opens with a chapter explaining the entire process through text and photos . The patterns call for wood between 1/4 and 1/2 inch in depth, but I have successfully made baskets with 1/4 inch plywood and 3/4 inch pine. The patterns can be enlarged or shrunk on a coppier and wood types and thicknesses can be varied to create a wide variety of objects. A scroll saw or fret saw is needed to complete these projects.

  2. This book has idea very good about you use your scroll saw, the patterns are easy to follow, they are simple idea but very very ingenious, excellent, buy it, you won't waste your money

  3. I just received this book, and the typesetting and illustration quality leave a lot to be desired. It appears that the publication master was typeset on a low quality laser printer. Twenty years ago I would have expected as much from a limited audience publication like this, but in this day and age there's really no excuse not to take the time to publish a book with high quality printing. (ever heard of Kinko's?)

I have not yet had a chance to try the patterns, but because of the low resolution, I am concerned that when I try to photocopy them for sawing, the quality of the working patterns may not be very good.

  4. Now in an expanded second edition, Making Wooden Baskets On Your Scroll Saw by woodworking experts John A. Nelson and William Guimond reveal just how simple and straightforward it is to create custom wooden baskets on the scroll saw. Showcasing wonderful projects with nicely illustrated, step-by-step instructions from start to finish, even the most novice woodworker can turn out professional quality market baskets, oval baskets, round baskets, square baskets, tissue boxes, candy dishes, jewelry boxes, and more.

  5. I love this book. The patterns are easy to follow, even for a beginner like me. I only wish there would have been more patterns. Everyone was amazed that the baskets were not carved from a solid piece of wood. I would recommend this book for beginners to advanced.

  1. Great book - clear, concise, easy to follow instructions and advice, with several delightful baskets to make. Polly teaches basketry at City Lit College in London and her ability to inspire her students is reflected in this book.

Watch out though for the titles if you have any other of Polly's books, as I found out to my disappointment - Basketwork (New Crafts), published in the USA is exactly the same book as Basket (Craft Workshop), published in the UK!

  1. Ms. Schlick is the uncontested expert on native American basketry of the Columbia Plateau (eastern Washington and Oregon) and she knows and has the admiration of many--perhaps all--of the current weavers. Her book finally puts a face and name on the creators of the baskets and sees them as individual artists. I can't believe this book has been allowed to go out of print--get it while you can.

  1. This is the best book of Chihuly works that I have seen. (I will assume some familiarity with the work of Dale Chihuly). Not only are the photos taken of my favourite Chihuly glassworks (the baskets), but the photos themselves are incredible. The photographer responsible for this book is incredible. The photos give a real impression of what it is like to see Chihuly glass live (and for anyone who hasn't, it is truly stunning to see). The baskets seem to be flexible in these photos, and not frozen, lifeless glass.

The book includes a section of photos of actual baskets that inspired Chihuly. Although this section was less exciting for me, my fiancée found this part educational, it gave her an idea of what the artist had in mind when creating the glassworks. While the book is a bit expensive, when you see the size of these incredible photos, you will think it is worth it. My only complaint is that there could have been a few more photos.

1 comments about Twill Basketry: A Handbook of Designs Techniques, and Styles.
  1. This is a great intermediate to advanced weaver's book. Although in the back she does cover straight and basic plaiting techniques, this book is for basket weaver's who are serious about their art and want to add color and/or artistic designs into their baskets. Not only does it teach you how to incorporate geometric designs in your work, it also teaches you how to draft your own artwork designs. The book covers twill weave, how to wrap your weavers, materials used, adding color and weaver tension. Also included is design weaving: basic blocks and diamond patterns as well as variations on the two; creating folded baskets, undulating twills and double weaving. You'll learn how to incorporate many different lines (such as a swirl pattern) and other fun shapes. Learn color techniques and how to correctly match multiple colors in one piece. Plus, learn how to read draft plans, build complex twills, and how to draft your own designs. Very easy to read and understand. Loads of wonderful color pictures as well as black and white draft plans to help you get started. A metric conversion chart and basket supply sources are included. 144 pages (hardback edition).
