5 comments about How to Start a Home-Based Gift Basket Business, 2nd.
- Anyone will tell you that starting a business is a lot of preparation before getting into the acutal running of the company. This book focuses on that important fact. Any business that deals with a product to a customer should have insurance. Some people may choose this business because they think that it is inexpensive and easy to sell your product, and yes it can be that if you work hard at it but the business information presented in this book is what will help save you from yourself and lack of knowledge about running a business.
While it may seem improbable that someone could sue you for food poisoning because a product you sold them made them sick, it becomes very real when you are about to lose your house and all your possessions because you were not insured. Small business insurance is probably the most important thing that someone should have if they are a sole propiertorship. This may not be good news to someone who is looking to start a business on a limited budget but it a necessity. I was impressed with all the business information that was included in this book because a lot of home based business books skip over that section and instead focus on the product. If you have the idea than you already have the product, the rest is implementation. Get this book if you have ideas but not aware of how to run a business.
- This is a great reference, especially for those still deciding if a gift basket business is what they want to do. The web sites and businesses reference in the back of the book are diverse, and the ones I have chosen to purchase from have had excellent product and good customer service.
- I bought at least 10 books when starting my business and this is the only one I actually still refer to. The Marketing chapter gave me so many ideas that never would have occured to me. She really goes into great detail about every last thing that you would need to know - from finding vendors to creating a business plan to setting up your home office. There are no design ideas or color pictures, but the "Tips and Techniques" were invaluable. I was starting from scratch as far as owning my own business is concerned, but this book walked me through every step. I'd recommend it to anyone thinking of going into this business.
- This book was very good I found it to be a step by step way to start a business, however, I'm not so sure it was great in helping those who need to find ways to start up their business w/out the help of others. For example I will be buying my inventory all own my own from my earnings from my primary job. I needed to find INEXPENSIVE vendors, and I just didn't get all that I expected from this book. The book is very easy to follow and gives GREAT advice and EXCELLENT motivation. Shirley is A.O.K in my book
- I bought this book not only for information on how to start my own gift basket business but also because it was used but in excellent condition and was dirt cheap. I figured even if it wasnt what I hoped it would be, I would only be out a very little amount of money. I sure was glad I made the decision. The book is very helpful. I only wished I waited for a more recent edition!!

- This book is excellant from front to back has a great collection of baskets from various artist. Would highly recommend it to anyone interested in pine needle basketery. I buy the book for new friends of the craft, I like it so well. Great for using in the classroom as well. McFarland has several other books which may out of print that are also very good.
- Teneriffe starts and basic coiled starts are covered in this book, but it emphasizes use of the teneriffe ring, and other "open work". Gives basic and advanced techniques, including attaching shapes together, extensions (away from the body of the basket), butterfly pattern, lids, and specific projects using these techniques. This book is meant for beginners, but you will probably have more success with these techniques if you have some sewing experience. Another book currently popular as a beginning point for pine needle coiling.
- I have never has so much useful instruction packed in a book with less than 50pages. Photography by Pat O'Hara and clear illustrations with arrows point out every movement. It may take a little time to make them smoothly and symmetric however even the first efforts look crafty and you just can not bring yourself to give them away as presents. Even if you do not have time to have fun with pine this is a must for your library and a good guide if you intend to buy others work.

1 comments about Navajo Ceremonial Baskets: Sacred Symbols Sacred Space.
- Navajo Ceremonial Baskets: Sacred Symbols Sacred Space explores the importance of the cerimonial basket in Navajo culture. Including a wealth of gorgeous color photographs throughout, portraits of award-winning basket weavers and their creations, involved interviews with Navajo medicine men, enjoyable tales of legendary heroic figures who played a role in the origin of baskets, straightforward information from everything concerning etiquette and safekeeping of ceremonial baskets to techniques for making tight-sealing woven water jars, and much more, Navajo Ceremonial Baskets is a welcome, informative, and enjoyable addition to Native American culture collections.

1 comments about Complete Book of Basketry.
- Despite the title of "Complete Book of Basketry," this book actually only covers what I would call wicker baskets, those made with a weave of strong wood fibers and solid wood components. Adequate histories of those baskets are given, as well as some nice DIY designs. She also covers, although not in depth, popular Native American baskets but VERY LITTLE is said about baskets other than those found in the US.
There also is a strong focus on what she categorizes as Appalachian baskets.
I was looking, however, primarily for information about the world-famous baskets made by blacks/African-Americans in the Charleston, SC, area, commonly called Sweetgrass/Gullah baskets. Wright allots only one paragraph and no illustrations to this huge and popular subject, and uses the word "negro," perhaps reflective of the book's initial 1977 copywright.
